>> we've got all the breaking news here on good day philadelphia. >> good morning. thank you for joining us for the 8:00 hour of our show today. >> breaking news. weather is going to be pretty good. >> weather will be good after we get rid of a little more snow. it's not going to happen today. the poconos like the cold weather. a beautiful start there with temperatures into the teens but we could have a little more snow, just a little bit coming through the area overnight tonight. there's a live picture, at 5th and market this morning. catch the bus, it's coming up. chilly again, not as windy. the clouds will increase and we have a wintry mix we will talk about tonight. you want to explore america, that's what weekend wendy wants to do. you don't have to go far you just have to go to the convention center. >> yes, it's finally here. it's time for the philadelphia flower show. and yeah, the theme this year is explore america, 100 years of the national park service.
8:02 am
it is going to be tremendous. opening day is today. it runs all week long through sunday, march 13th. and if you don't come home with some flowers like wendy has, something is the matter with you. have a great time at the flower show opening today. >> you'll also be in big trouble with the wife too. 32 degrees, north northwest wind, that relative humidity. 30s right now except for those north and western suburbs, 29, reading, allentown, pottstown and just a little colder along the coast there. so it could barely climb up today. we have a little sunshine now but later the clouds will start to increase and overnight tonight that area of snow will be pushing through just a brief period of snow may be mixing with some rain farther to the south. this is all today. it's just cloudy. and by the time you wake up tomorrow morning, just that light area of rain and snow. it clears out tomorrow. those numbers in the 7-day
8:03 am
forecast are coming up. >> it is exactly 8:03 right now. officials are looking into the cause of an overnight fire in kensington right after midnight and the scene there. officials say it was a vacant house that caught fire but there were people who certainly live in that community and they had to get out of the way and evacuate. the good news, nobody was hurt. >> we've been talking about it this morning. two men are in police custody after a shootout in a frankford neighborhood. >> they fired on an unmarked police car. jennie sp. >> reporter: good morning, karen and bill. fortunately no one was injured. what we do know is that police took two suspects into custody. they're looking for one to two more. they're trying to round up some surveillance images from that area to try to help with this investigation. they tell us that shots rang out just after 7:00 last night in
8:04 am
the city's frankfort session on the 5300 block of hedge street. police officers nearby conducting a narcotics investigation heard the gunfire and an officer in an unmarked ford taurus went to check it out. the officer was still sitting in the driver's seat he did not have time to get out of the car. one bullet hit the officer's vehicle. police chief inspector scott small says he was very lucky that he was not hurt. >> the three to four people that were seen firing shots at police who were in very close proximity to the front of the police car. the police car was definitely struck by gunfire. the officer driving the car never got a chance to get out of the car when the shots were fired but that police officer was not struck. just a few feet away from where the officer was sitting in the driver's seat is where that bullet struck the police car in the front bumper. >> reporter: police immediately
8:05 am
called in aviation, they had highway patrol officers in the area and other uniform police officers nearby who responded to the call and swarmed the scene. police say two of the suspects were caught again. they do believe they're looking for at least one more, possibly two. and again despite several shots being fired, no 1 on the street, no police officers injured during the gunfire. karen and bill? >> it is exactly 8:05 right now. police in camden county police are looking for a person who robbed convenience stores last month. if you have any information, call police. >> police say they've arrested an 82-year-old doctor for allegedly running a pill mill inside his office.
8:06 am
he sold undercover officers $10,000 worth of percocet and other pills from his office on ridge avenue during a two-and-a-half-year sting operation. the office did not contain much in the way of medical equipment or supplies but did employee an armed security guard. neighbors say they thought the practice kept odd hours but they never expected a police raid close to their home. >> there is a big prescription drug epidemic in the country and it's an interesting contrast from the street dealers, from strawberry mansion is just a mile away. so it's interesting to see that kind of crime on all levels. >> dr. rothman's bail was set to $150,000. >> some sad news, joey feek. she was one half of that country duo, she died. she passed away last night after a battle with cervical cancer. she's just 40. her husband wrote on facebook. my wife's greatest dream came true. she is in heaven.
8:07 am
they were discovered back in 2008 on a reality television show. they also had a daughter. she was just 40 years old. and another passing. >> pat conroy the author. conroy announced last month he had pancreatic cancer. he was 70 years old. >> you know this that your family pet is gone. you're calling for him, no answer. what do you do? the answer could be right on your phone. coming up how the search for a missing pet is now going high tech. >> thank you for sending this in.
8:11 am
glorious morning. it is still a little chilly out there right now. hey, chris, what's going on? >> reporter: good day philadelphia weekend is the only place you can see a talented group of junior reporters and this morning we have one of them talking with us specifically about your pets. tracy, you found a new app important for pet lovers. >> pay attention. there are apps for everything. some are bizarre, some can save lives. if you lose your pet, there's an app for that. >> my heart sank and i immediately went into panic mode. >> it was a tuesday night back
8:12 am
in 2012 when he realized his dogs were no longer in his backyard because the gate was left over. >> i ran out the door to search for them and had the first choice to make it into the driveway and i had to go left or right and no idea which way to go. >> fortunately raven was found a half hour later and lu lu was returned after an alarming 24 hours. >> i wanted help, but all the people who were in the best position to help, they didn't know i needed the help. >> reporter: that's when they created the concept turned mobile app, fur alert. an amber alert for pets. she opens the app and goes to the report tab selecting buddy's profile. she sends a message to the rest of the community. a pop up alert is then received.
8:13 am
if you see buddy, you can contact by a call, text or e-mail. once he's been found that removes him from the list. >> the sooner they come home the less likely they are to be injured. >> reporter: as a veterinarian julie knows all too well what can happen to a missing pet. she stresses to owners that accidents can happen when you least expect it. >> i can say we're very careful people and our pets went missing because an accident can happen to anyone. >> reporter: time and distance are an enemy and fur alert is an active approach reuniting a family with their best friend. >> what a useful tool that app is. i'm one of the few people left here that has one of these old samsungs. will that work on this phone? >> absolutely. >> make shoor when you download it, set your profile first. it takes 30 seconds to a minute
8:14 am
so that unfortunately if your dog does go lost, send fur alert. >> 30 seconds, what a huge great investment. interesting stuff. thanks so much. >> it looks great out there. the clouds going to increase. might have to watch for a few showers coming in tonight, rain or snow. but there's something else big happening tonight. for that let's look at this question. >> dave, karen, bill, how are you doing? this is my family. >> hi! >> i'm dancing for the kids independent mission school
8:15 am
today. please vote for me. how is the weather going to be for the big day today. >> if i had known you were dancing tonight, i would have raised these temperatures a bit. right now tonight 41 in center city and 38 and down to 35. so clouds will be increasing. we are watching for some snow at midnight. it will be around by tomorrow morning but we'll watch for it tonight. watching these temperatures slowly climb this morning. things are slowly warming up but they're not going to be warming up quickly with the sunshine. that's going to be replaced by clouds. the snow is slowly pushing east. a lot of it not even reaching the ground but eventually it will. look at the timing. this will be the clouds coming in first. we'll start at 10:00 and by about 3:00, 4:00 in the afternoon, it's cloudy. 5:00 there it is, cloudy skies
8:16 am
by 7:00, 8:00 tomorrow morning, an area of snow moving through and this could give us a little coating but this is the only winter weather we're talking about. we have spring-like temperatures in the 7-day forecast. those numbers coming up a little bit later. >> that's great. we are ready for spring and it is here officially. at least according to me. whenever the flower show rolls into town, that's when we think that spring is here. we check out the beauty of the flowers and things we can be planting in our own gardens. thousands will be at the convention center. it all kicks off at 11:00 for the public. the theme this year, i love this one. explore america 100 years of the national park service. joining us this morning we have scott kremp from kremp's florist. >> this is actually our 41st
8:17 am
year. it's exciting. >> and where are you in willow grove? >> wiit by the willow grove train station. >> one of the great things about the show, my parents will always go and a lot of people take pictures, they also buy stuff. my mom will buy some things. what are the big sellers. >> for us the big seller is always roses. this time of year people want to have spring brought into their house. it's roses and other spring flowers that people love to put on their tables. >> what are the things that i could buy right now that i could plant in my garden. >> those would be the willows.
8:18 am
you'll start to, as the weather warms up, you'll see some annuals and things that bring color to your yard. >> what are the next things i should be doing in my garden right now. >> you'll want to clean things out and get ready for the weather to keep warming up and you find those nice colorful plands you want to put in there to make your yard look great. >> how does the show look? >> it looks amazing. >> well, i like walking through the marketplace i like to see our flowers for sure. but to see the ways the different vendors display the look of the different national parks all over the country, it's just an amazing way to walk through the show. >> is there one that's going to knock my socks off? >> well, it will knock your socks off when you walk in and you see the opening display and it's just the way they have this big log cabin-type display there. it is beautiful. >> remind me of the wilderness at disney.
8:19 am
i love to go and stay in those old hotels. thank you for coming in. we appreciate it. i love the flower show. so maybe you're going. let us know if you're going. and what's your favorite flower? what's the one you love the most. let us know. use the hashtag #fox29goodday. >> make you're headed to the flower show. i need to go because i need some landscaping work bad. may need a little reminder to catch the train if you're trying to get there. we've got some new technology that can help you out. coming out a new service that aims to keep you from forgetting anything. plus, you may not know the right thing to say to women. but there are some things that you should never, ever say. >> bill, does this make me look fat? >> karen, relax. >> we'll explain the things that you never say to women. just gave you a big hint. that's all coming up. >> and also we have some birthdays. you say it's your birthday.
8:23 am
i'm not as familiar with the music we're playing this morning. >> i like this song. it may have been written for me. >> that is a classic. >> i'm old school. i should know this. >> sometimes we all need a little reminder, whether it's to call someone back, buy a birthday present or even pick someone up. >> there's a new service that aims at keeping your schedule in check. let's check out this new tech. >> this is your tech byte. i want to share with you a service i never thought i would use. basically if you have a lot going on or maybe use your inbox a little too much, this service
8:24 am
will keep you in check and make you look like you're on top of things. what it basically does is you sign up for it and they send you a whole bunch of e-mails so your phone or your outlook client will remember it. basically what you do is when you have an e-mail or you can send an e-mail direct to any of those e-mail addresses, when you want to remind yourself. for instance i want a reminder at 6:00 p.m. i send an e-mail for that, at 6:00 p.m. boom, it will remind me. let's say e-mail is not my thing or i want my phone to vibrate. all you do is add dash sms and you will get a text message right on your phone. maybe it's not the right time. once that comes in, you can hit a button and delay it. it's all custom. so if you want to keep your life in order and never forget anything, this is a service is
8:25 am
to clear your inbox and change your life. it has helped me tremendously. if you want to talk more about cool services, reach out to us and we can continue this conversation online. >> i'm a fan of that guy and the car he drives around in. anthony is awesome. a bit of a citrus controversy for one supermarket. >> this is one of those we've got to get your opinion on this one. oranges. it's a perfect food. it comes in a perfect package. so why would you put it in something else? we'll explain. >> unbelievable. >> plus a knife reportedly found new o.j. simpson's former house. police are now testing it. could it be a murder weapon and what would that potentially mean for the case? we'll discuss. >> and also thank you for sending your pictures. my beautiful sunshine. want a different way to cleanse?
8:27 am
8:29 am
every shot, every picture looks great today. perfect weather, the dome in trenton glowing. it's a beautiful day to have a good day. how do you like that? >> i love that. i haven't seen a person in any of our pictures. >> they're all inside watching "good day philadelphia" as they should be. >> thank you out there. >> take a lo at some of this morning's top stories. today marks one year since sergeant wilson was gunned down inside a game stop in north philadelphia. investigators say he was buying a gift for his son when two men armed with guns walked in, announced a robbery and started shooting. sergeant wilson died protecting the customers and workers inside
8:30 am
that store. those two gunmen have been charged with his murder. >> pennsylvania attorney general says she wants the case against her thrown out. a new court filing claims she was the victim. judges have close ties to this case and a clear interest it's outcome. she faces charges that she leaked secret grand jury information and lied about it under oath. >> and officials representing new jersey transit and rail workers union plan to meet on monday to try and avoid a system-wide rail strike. a strike deadline has been set for next weekend and about 105,000 people rely on new jersey trains every day to get to and from work. so hopefully they get this resolved. >> at 8:30, let's take a look at the forecast. >> it goes is from awful to
8:31 am
great and a little bit better than okay here this weekend here. today it's okay. the temperatures are trying to climb above 40 degrees. one little problem, a little mix of rain and snow dealing with that very early tomorrow then we start going up. we're pretty good tomorrow as temperatures continue to climb. very warm weather expected but we're just not getting it this weekend. it's only to the 30s and 20s now. it will slowly climb today. clouds will increase and that may keep the temperatures down just a bit. clouds ahead of that snow that we're talking about. it will be pushing through and be around early tomorrow. we're going to say cloudy and cool, dropping to 41 degrees tonight. once that clears out our temperatures jump up a few degrees each day and we'll show you when they peak and how warm it will be this coming week. that's all in the 7-day forecast coming up. >> we are following a developing story out of los angeles. a knife allegedly found on the
8:32 am
property where o.j. simpson lived at the time of the killings. los angeles police say that knife was found 18 years ago. but investigators only got it within the last month from a retired officer who claims a construction worker found it back in 1998. now, instead of turning it over to the lapd, the officer apparently just kept it and the knife is being tested. what could this mean if anything. joining us by skype this morning, attorney heather hanson who always breaks it down for us. good morning. >> good morning. >> the movie is out, everybody is talking about o.j. simpson and all of a sudden a knife turns up. is this going to mean everything legally going forward? >> very little for o.j. there's a thing called double jeopardy. you can't be tried twice for the same crime. the only exception to that prosecutors in federal court could actually pursue a case. here i don't see that happening. there has to be a civil rights violation that would be a
8:33 am
stretch. so chances are o.j. is not going to be retried even if they were to find dna from him and the victims on this knife. >> we're assuming that this may in fact be authentic. it still has to be verified. but assume for a second that it is. so you're saying that no charge is likely for o.j. what about the person who takes evidence and holds on to it for 18 years. >> concealing evidence has to be willingly and knowingly. so that cop maybe should have known that this case is not actually closed. until there's a conviction, the case is not closed. however he could certainly argue that knowing that the case against o.j. was closed, he did not realize this could actually be evidence. it would be very difficult to bring charges against him. the whole thing is really a lot of ado about nothing. >> really. what's interesting to me,
8:34 am
allegedly this traffic cop who had this knife held on to it as a souvenir. doesn't the fact that he held on to it indicate that he thought there may have been relevance to it. >> i think it meant that he definitely knew that it wag something that could be worth money or publicity, we don't know where it came from, how long it has been with him, where else it has been. there's a thing called chain of custody where you have to be able to track where evidence has been to make sure that it hasn't been tampered with. i think that this knife, they'll certainly test it, perhaps it will give us more information about what happened back then, but i don't think it's going to have a huge impact on o.j.'s life. the worst thing is it keeps bringing it up for the family. >> they have a hearing on the parole hearing. >> remember the people who hear
8:35 am
the parole hearings, they're human beings. say for example there's actually evidence that can tie this knife to o.j. and to the murders, it's almost impossible to hear about that and not to consider it whether they're considering whether or not to let him back on the street. that's a whole lot of ifs and maybes, but there's a lot of possibility that it could have some impact when he's up for parole. >> we appreciate it. >> thanks bill, have a great day. >> talk to you again soon. so there's o.j. controversy that we're talking about, but there's a citrus controversy. >> an orange controversy. why whole foods is facing some flack over oranges. i'll give you a hint. something similar happened if you can believe it with bananas. villa nova basketball today. what's it going to take them to win the number one seed in march
8:36 am
8:39 am
we've been talking about it this morning. sometimes spending a little bit in the name of convenience is worth it. but one people are complaining that one grocery store went a little too far. >> let's show you see what you think about this one. this is a picture that someone tweeted. can you see what's inside? a peeled orange. inside a plastic container. this is at a whole foods in california. so 17,000 people retweeted this one with a lot of people saying why would you get rid of the most perfect packaging in the entire planet, the orange peel, and put it instead in wasteful plastic? >> and whole foods responded with a tweet that says definitely our mistake. these have been pulled, we hear you. we will leave them in their natural packaging, the peel. the company went on to say it
8:40 am
was an experiment that wasn't totally thought through. >> the same thing happened with bananas. where people are saying why would you repackage bananas in plastic when it comes in a peel. >> why do they cut up any fruit and sell it to people in convenient containers because people want to take it with lunch and open it up and eat it. >> so you're a fan of this? >> i'm not a fan. i wouldn't buy it because i can take the time to actually peel an orange. but they sell a lot of cut fruit just for convenience. i get the concern about the plastic. but that's problematic. i don't have a problem with them putting fruit in smaller portions for people. >> do you know that teenagers and people in their 20s don't eat cereal anymore. do you know why? >> i have no idea. >> it is too much work to put it in a bowl. it's easier to grab a bar and rip off the wrapper and go. >> are you as outraged as the
8:41 am
17,000 people who retweeted this? do you have a problem with precut and packaged produce? it's the subject of our instant reaction poll. you can vote in the "good day weekend" section of fox 29. vote yes or no. and we'll have the results in just a few minutes. >> i do buy the precut produce. i would not buy that orange though. coming up, we're going to help you out here. this is for the menfolk out there. you should never, ever say in front of any women that you love.
8:44 am
8:45 am
saying "what is it now"? >> just don't use the word "now" at all. >> i found any time you say "now,". >> it's the time. >> it makes you sound impatient and angry like you're dismissing them. >> instead you're supposed to say what's on your mind. >> now? >> i'll tell you what's on your mind. probably nothing. what's next. this one is kind of obvious. ladies tell me. you a you used to look a certain way or i really miss that. >> i can't imagine someone saying that. >> you know what? men never surprise me. >> i did it last week. >> you did not. >> i brought it up myself.
8:46 am
remember about five or six years ago when we went to the caribbean and we both looked good. >> you can't do that. >> even if you include yourself, that's a problem. you have to say instead i love that color on you or i liked it when you wore whatever. give the compliment. >> the age-old question. does this dress make me look fat. sometimes it does. do you want the truth or not? >> they don't want the truth. >> i think we cannot handle the truth. >> then don't ask. >> because we want you to listen. we want validation. i tell my husband that every day. that he loves me and that i'm beautiful. >> he loves you. >> he says it like he's reading a script. >> the next thing, fine, have it
8:47 am
your way. don't say it. that turns things into a competition. it doesn't sounds like you really care about her needs and her concerns. >> you know another one women don't like? just relax. >> i don't think anybody likes that. >> relax or calm down or talk quieter. don't do it. >> alex, calm down, i am calm. see, that's what i mean. it gets me every time. >> alex, calm down. >> and you put on top of that, alex calm down and you follow it up with do you have to be so needy? you don't say that, ever. it's an insult, plain and simple. >> have you done it? >> yeah. absolutely. it doesn't go over very well. >> so don't do it. >> well, you don't think about it when you're saying it. >> you should think before you speak. >> she gets angry it's always
8:48 am
about you. we go out in public and everybody is coming up to you. does it always have to be about you? and i go yeah. >> it wasn't an insult to you. >> it bothers me. >> because you're so needy. >> oh, relax, bill. >> we'll leave it there. >> which are the ones that you hate? you can let us know. use our hashtag, #fox29goodday. >> what mike says, you want to say the opposite. wilmington, delaware. beautiful shot. that's making way for some clouds. that will keep the temperatures down just a little bit later today. another great event happening, this is right near the international airport. take a look. >> we're here for the great war remembrance and we want to know if we have a shot at good weather this weekend. >> i was getting nervous when people carry guns and say give
8:49 am
me the forecast. but that's a great-looking event here. fortunately weather forecasting has come a long way since world war i. if you want to take in some history, go there. watch for some snow coming in overnight tonight. there's no snow on the ground. cathy sent this picture in. she could she her shadow. 32 in philadelphia and 20s in the suburbs. colder in the surrounding suburbs. a little bit of snow there, that's what it looks like on ultimate doppler and we'll continue to move east and be here by tomorrow morning. we're just talking about a little bit of snow and rain. very, very light. it looks like it's just about say 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning. should be warm enough where not much of a problem on the roadways. definitely no more snow in the forecast. very warm air coming in and the
8:50 am
7-day forecast we are jumping up a number of degrees each day. here's what it looks like in the 7-day forecast. it's colder this weekend but we really start to warm up on monday, tuesday and wednesday we are up to near 70 degrees. stops right there though. middle of the week it gets a little cooler with some rain and partly cloudy with a cool breeze on friday. temperature of 52 degrees. >> for villa nova, the wild cats clinch the big east title earlier this week, their season isn't over just yet. they have one more regular season game it's today at home against georgetown. >> it's a noon game. you'll be able to watch all the action right here on fox starting at noon. sean bell is here. this is a game that could really be a letdown. >> it's not a gotcha game.
8:51 am
i don't care if the game was played at noon, 2:00 p.m., 9:00 p.m. georgetown is no good. this is easy buckets right here. no problem. it's all about going hot into the tournament. >> that's why it matters. because they do have to be hot and they can't afford to lose and they're playing for number one seed. >> they need to win the big east tournament to get the number one seed in the east region. you wants to stay out east because you don't want to go out west. and villa nova, this is their third year in a row that they're the number one seed in the big east tournament. villa nova is used to getting upset. but the big east is so terrible. there's only two or three teams that can actually win. you've got providence, they've been terrible lately but they still have the big east team of the year and seton hall has been playing well and georgetown is a joke. >> and providence and xavier
8:52 am
have both beaten villa nova. >> yes. but still they have the capability to do it. but the big east isn't the big east. this is georgetown with the old john thompson. they're terrible. sold-out game so people are interested. as they get ready to go into the tournament, can a jump shooting team go all the way? >> yes. >> it can happen because it's not just that they're a three-point team. they're a team that can hit some mid-range shots. are you are hot, that's what it's about. that's what this thing is about if you're hot. i understand jump shooting, but guards usually win this thing. and if you are hot, that's all that matters. jump shooting down low, you've just got to go -- no team in the country right now are dominant. >> there's no kentucky, no duke. >> not even kansas. i'm sorry. not even kansas is a dominant
8:53 am
team. >> we've got to move on. >> he's been there for like 87 years. how long has this guy been there? >> if villa nova is ever going to do it, because jay wright, we love him. is he almost getting that rep of well his teams are always great. >> can't finish. he has that already. he's not going to get, he can't finish. last year you lose in the second round. you're a number one seed. how many final four appearances have you had, jay? >> that is a tough label. >> and you're number one every year. and part of the reason is because the big east is so bad right now now that everybody has moved to the acc they don't get challenged in the big east. they go in and face a real team. >> we believe. but here's the thing. you better do it this year because it's all lined up. if you get that number one seed, you stay in the east, and you play at the wells farg ocenter. >> got to get through the first
8:54 am
weekend. >> you play the barclays, when you play here for the last, this is set up for them to go final four more than any other year for it to be played right here. so i do think they can do it. in this tournament you need a great coach. they need veteran leadership. they can get it done. but chill. >> sold-out game, so if you want to see it, of course you want to see it because we're pulling for the wildcats. the game is today at noon right here on fox. >> thank you, sean. >> you're welcome.
8:56 am
8:57 am
>> wake me up before you go-go. poll results. do you buy precut and packaged produce? karen, i'm going to say it again. they agree with me, yes. 80%. maybe not oranges, but prepackaged. >> well, they agree with you. but did you know i'm going to be changing my name because i'm about to be adopted. did you see that man? he is from our area. he is the judge. he won $300 million in that wednesday lottery. how about that?
9:00 am
