7:05 am
1,200 housing units. the first phase of this neighborhood redevelopment actually happened last august when contractors broke ground on the construction of 57 new rental units. city officials say this is part of an investment in this section of the city worth over half a billion. they say they want families to be proud to live in this neighborhood. originally the implosion was scheduled for 7:15. we were just told it was going to be pushed back by at least ten minutes. closer to 7:25. we will bring that to you live. >> we do have that box right there on the left-hand corner of your scene and that is a view from sky fox of the buildings that are going to be imploded. we're going to leave that up. >> we're taking a look at new news this morning. firefighters are trying to figure out what sparked a fire at a beauty sa loan in the northeast section of the city.
7:06 am
it happened just after 2:00 at the bamboo p beauty salon. thankfully no one was hurt. and in delaware county overnight, a two-alarm fire broke out at a day care center. this was at the 100 block of ridge avenue in darby. so far no word on what caused that fire. >> right now police are searching for a gunman after a deadly shooting in north philadelphia. two people were shot right there. one of them died at hospital. if you know anything, please call police right away. >> one person is in the hospital following a crash in camden county. police say a man lost control of his car as he was driving along aerial road. he hit a tree and the car burst into flames. the driver was pulled to safety and he's in critical condition and the cause of that crash is
7:07 am
currently unknown. >> the fbi wants you to take a good look at a person they have the suspect for a whole series of bank robberies in philadelphia. investigators say that guy robbed a first trust bank on market street on friday. they also think he is behind two bank robberies in july and october. he uses a whole bunch of baseball p caps and sunglasses to disguise himself. >> a kensington man is shot and killed. store cameras caught all of it. we have that video because because of the graphic nature we aren't showing the actual shooting. you can see the victim, a 22-year-old man standing there in front of a corner store, food market at somerset. and you can see a gunman approach. keep your eye on the left of the scene, you can see the gun. we're stopping the video there
7:08 am
because what's happening next the suspect fired at least 15 rounds at the victim even after he's face down on the ground. the video shows the reflection in the window of a burgundy suv, it shows two people pull up on a dirt bike. they've arrested one suspect. they're looking for another. >> there's a judge who has arraigned three franciscan friars who are accused of covering up sexual abuse. investigators say baker sexually abused hundreds of children over decades and those priors help to cover it up. baker committed suicide in 2013. the judge set an unsecured bail of $75,000 for each friar. >> parents are fighting to keep
7:09 am
west hampton friends academy from closing its doors. they abruptly announced the close another. the parents want to know where the money went and why they weren't told sooner of the closer. they tell fox 29 this was no mismanagement. now students are raising money to keep their school from shutting its doors. >> i felt like what am i going to do? i'm going to lose all my friends. >> i was really upset because i really love it here. >> this is a huge fund raising initiative. the school needs approximately $1 million by the end of april. >> that feud between donald trump and fox news anchor megyn kelly getting for examplely once again. donald trump is calling for a boy ket every her show, getting
7:10 am
personal with the anchor in a tweet trump wrote everybody should boycott she is sick and the most overrated person on tv. so fox news responded donald trump's vitriolic attacks on megynkelly. >> her already great ratings will probably shoot up now. so thanks for that. >> 7:10 is the time right now. all the hoopla of march madness. >> villa no va took care of unca but unfortunately temple fell to iowa. saint joe's won in a controversial last-second call.
7:11 am

7:12 am
7:15 am
>> it looks like cincinnati tied it up, but no. the officials say that that shot was after the buzzer. so st. joe's goes on. look at that, no good. st. joe's to the second round. >> good morning, i'm howard eskin. the sixers play games only because they're on the schedule. the results are the same. sixers playing washington. sixers were down 24 in the second half. washington fell asleep but then woke up. the turnover by the sixer, washington scores as the sixers don't get back on defense as washington wins it 99-94. the ncaa tournament today. temp plays iowa a 7-point underdog the games are bigger
7:16 am
but the message is the same. >> it's changed a little bit. the chiitment level is different but i see the same excitement in the players. they're fired up about this opportunity and they want to do their best and it really is going to come down to how poised they are. >> and the phillies dressed up for st. paddy's day in the jerseys. however they lose to tampa. we'll see what happens the rest of the spring. that's sports in a minute. i'm howard eskin. >> a check on your forecast of this day. it is a pretty nice start to this day. we know it's cool and there's going to be some change. >> in fact allentown there could miss pretty much everything. the farther north and west you go. they'll be cool today. it's not that one big storm that could give us a lot of snow we once thought here.
7:17 am
radar shows what could be happening today. these are two separate areas. one of the midwest and the other developing over the coast of the north carolina. they're going to be separate here so we could see this area moving in quicker today. part of the area could see a little rain and snow today. not everywhere, but here's the first storm and here's the next one. this will be tomorrow's storm. this was thought to be the big one and that will stay a little farther east. not quite coming together in time to give us that accumulating snow it looked like here for the first day of spring. close-up view, let's track this first one hour by hour what to expect and where. here's that rain arriving by 3:00. it stays directly east. with this type of situation, certainly no accumulation. you will see a little snow on here. the computer forecast sees this intensity coming up just a bit. that rain comes down fairly quick and intensifies that, that will mix that snow down to the surface.
7:18 am
don't be surprised if you see that rain mixing with snow for part of the area and it slowly works its way south. maybe watch after sunset tonight because if that snow comes down heavy enough, it could coat the ground just a little bit making it very slippery but really not expecting much in the way of accumulation. it's all cleared out by tomorrow morning. what to expected today? we're into the 40s only. a little cooler. 44 along 95. just a chance of some light rain. better chance of the rain to the south and could mix briefly with some snow. north and west will be at 47 degrees. it's much cooler, you step outside there's a chill in the air. 31 in allen down and down to 30 in doylestown. grab the coat. you'll need it today. 40 in philadelphia. we'll climb into the mid to low 40s so not really warming up much and it's above freezing to the south, so not much trouble on the roadways. it's been very warm so any type of snow that comes down will
7:19 am
quickly melt. the temperatures will warm up considerably in the 7-day forecast. it will really feel like spring maybe just a few days late. >> i like it. we'll take it. sounds like spring is coming. so that's good. we all know that eating fish is good for us. high in protein, it has omega-3 fatty acids. it's good for me and it tastes good. >> i love it but scientists say we need to be careful. this is according to the united nations. all the world's fisheries could collapse by the year 2048 because of overfishing. >> so there's a seafood watch an organization that is out with a new list you should eat and some to avoid. >> the group says bass is good. striped, large-mouthed could be best choices. >> cod is also okay but you need to check. the group says pacific-caught
7:20 am
cod from alaska or farmed but fish from the atlantic should be avoided. >> salmon the group says try to keep with the wild alaskan salmon. >> as for the bad stuff, bluefin tu na. if you want tuna, stick to al ba core and skipjack. >> next up, halibut. the group says you can try turbo from greenland instead. >> and finally the group says stay away from any and all species of shark. except for the spiney dog fish that is from the united states west coast. >> that was a lot of information and details on fish and the only one i really like i didn't see on the list is tilapia. >> i love tilapia. i'm really floundering on this. i'm going to buy into it hook, line and sinker. >> you're going to see the
7:21 am
implosion so you won't miss it. 7-eleven is letting you go big with your slurpy today. >> why would i want to bring my own cup? >> you can bring a giant mug, a big mixing bowl, even a hat. >> so what's the rule? >> there's no rule. it's got to fit in a 10-inch diameter hole. the drink will only cost $1.50. >> let's take a look at the pictures you're sending in. bring your own cup. 7-eleven. oh, my goodness.
7:22 am
>> a whole nation of sugar rush and brain freeze going on at the same time. >> it is march madness and we're having a whole lot of fun. my bracket is slow. anything can happen. >> there were a lot of surprises and upsets. the local teams in the big dance coming up the last-second shot that almost ended the dream for one of our philadelphia schools. >> and speaking of shots, how about a shot into space? it was a russian rocket blasting into space on board an american astronaut. how he is going to make history on the international space station.
7:23 am
7:24 am
because we care for you... and your eyes. this is genuine eye care, in your neighborhood. this is pearle vision. ithere was 14 of us in a four bedroom apartment in the projects in boston. to be the first, actually, kid to buy a house in my family... ...i just realized that, i'm the first kid to buy a house... ...it's a very proud moment. whatever home means to you, we'll help you find it. zillow.
7:25 am
and it is 7:25. taking a look there -- there it is. >> there it goes. >> the implosion happens -- we told you we would bring it to you. right there 23rd and jefferson philadelphia housing authority implosion as they knock that down in an attempt to rebuild that area and try to start market economic development there. it's the norman blumberg development. been there for almost 50 years basically. and it had become the time to make a better community for folks and it's always impressive
7:26 am
when you watch buildings that have stood for so long come down. >> people had to evacuate that area. >> they did. >> now the build suggest down but because of all of that you have to stay out of there for hours. people can't consider coming back to that area until much later this evening. >> i don't know if we can watch that video again to see it as it happens. i was just told no. we will do that coming up in just about a couple of minutes. >> what's interesting about this is part of that whole revitalization of the ridge corridor. it is part of their plan to put affordable housing together with market rate housing to see if they can coexist. pha has been trying to do that for a while. >> i think you've spent some time at this pizza shop. >> i did. with a mission of paying it
7:27 am
forward. so you buy an extra slice of pizza and someone else can eat. >> now they're taking it up a notch. the owner going a step further. how he is helping other people right now really make a difference in their lives. >> spring is officially tomorrow, right? you're probably not thinking about the flu anymore, but health officials say you should be. why they say you should still get a flu shot. it's not too late. >> the awkward family shots have begun. send your awkward pics. use our hashtag #fox29goodday. find fantasy shows.
7:28 am
7:32 am
what went into making those films. we love it. weekend wendy loves it. the hours today at the fringe lynn institute 9:30 to 5:00. dave, what's the weather? >> it's a little change from what we've been thinking here. the storm sunday looks to be staying off the coast but we'll have some rain developing today. brief little mix possible mainly to the south, very little accumulation. there's the sunshine we have this morning. high clouds moving in. 40 degrees much colder. down and below the freezing mark north and west. there's a chill in the air this
7:33 am
morning. millville is down to 38 and wild wide is 39 degrees. there is rain and snow work are their way into the area today. it's pushing into western maryland and right along western and central pennsylvania it will stay along the mason-dixon line moving through to the south but it could briefly mix with some snow. this is the first area of moisture. it was thought they would combine and really intensify and bring us a bit of snow tomorrow but passing on by today mainly south of philadelphia look for some rain and some brief snow with very little accumulation. much warmer weather finally now that spring is under way tomorrow. >> high school football coach resigns after hazing allegations surface involving three of his players. in a letter sent home to parents this week, the head coach stepped down. prosecutors say three players used a broom handle to sexually
7:34 am
assault a freshman in october. the locker room had an insufficient adult presence. they relieved the entire varsity and jv staff. are schools liable when this happens. you tell me legally are the adults in the room or supposed to be in the bault liable when something like this happens? >> there should be supervision or not. this was called no gay thursday and what this was was in the locker room on thursday there was no supervision at all by the coaching staff. so there could be potential liability because of that. this was kind of a hazing ritual that went on for years at conestoga high school. they were charged as juveniles, unlawful restraint and making
7:35 am
terroristic threats. it was interesting to me that the commonwealth of pennsylvania is one of 44 states that has hazing laws except it only covers colleges. does not cover high schools. so there's a bill now in the pennsylvania legislature, it's actually passed the house, it's in the senate, that will now cover between seventh and 12th grades in high schools. >> you pointed out this has been allegedly going on for years. and then also question whether or not there's any adult spiftion or if the coaches knew. is that willful ignorance? if something like that is going on regularly, whether or in the you knew, shouldn't you have known? >> certainly that argument could be made. these are football players doing things to other football players and the coaching staff basically said we had no idea this was going on and supposedly it had been going on for some two to
7:36 am
three years prior there could be allegations if they didn't know they should have known. it seems to me a coaching staff should know what's going on in their own locker rooms. >> we'll follow this case and see if there's additional repercussions and we will have you back. thank you sir. >> we've got a question for everybody out there right now. what would you do with $100? think about that one. >> spend it. >> how would you spend it, though? use the hashtag #fox29goodday. >> it could make the difference between eating and not eating. >> different backgrounds have different answers. >> i want a slice. a nice hot slice of pizza. if you go to this place, they pay it forward and now they have an extra trick to this. the owner of this shop is going further. how he's helping the homeless community. nicely done.
7:38 am

7:39 am
this one is a little telling about our priorities. not too surprising as we get older our circumstances change and we spend our money a little different. in this video from cutback.com shows different people in different ages and situations spending $100. take a look. >> like a couple days' worth of
7:40 am
money or one frivolous night of indulgence. >> before i had kids i didn't grocery shop. >> having kids now is crazy at times. >> money means getting by. >> starving artist sort of thing, i think. >> it's interesting looking at the video. you see people's priorities and one person in the video, a bartender spent more than half of his money, $63 on a bottle of wine. another man living on social security complains he doesn't make enough money but he spent half his money on junk food, cookies, soda and wine. the analysis was to figure out how we spend our money based on
7:41 am
priorities. >> sometimes it's a treat to spoil yourself. >> i don't know. i think it does depend on where you are in life. if you have kids obviously you want to do something for them or you want to treat yourself. i like going to the grocery store so i would buy some food. >> i was thinking get a mass age, i might try to go on a date night with my husband. >> you pamper yourself. >> i never get a chance to do it. i always have the kids. tor me it's the permission to go do it. how about you, $100? >> if i have the extra money, i'm trying to fix my home. i don't do a whole lot of going out and splurging. as a family we used to give each child $100 and see what you came back with. my brother would come back with one big thing and i would come back 50 things worth no money.
7:42 am
7:43 am
7:45 am
welcome back. beautiful start to our saturday. wilmington, delaware, good morning to you. time now to take you in focus. and today this is a great follow-up on a story we told you about last year. there's a pizza shop in center city, that's not news. but this one pays it forward and now the owner going another step forward. our photo journalist bill rohr shows us how. >> reporter: by now most of you have heard the story. rose's fresh pizza, a dollar a slice pizza shop helping to feed the homeless in philadelphia. rose's model is simple. the a person in need can have a slice off the wall paid for by a stranger. the word spread quickly on social media. >> now that we've gotten all this national attention, i had no idea how powerful, i was
7:46 am
totally unprepared. >> reporter: unprepared for not, millions of people from all over the world are helping the cause. >> business doubled, tripled overnight. we've given away 60,000, 70,000 slice of pizza. >> they needed to hire help and that is where rose's story continues. >> this is like a new life here. i was given new life when i found this job. >> for two years derek was without a home. >> it was horrible. it was horrible. when i first came here i was homeless. jobless. but not hopeless. i was actually making things happen for myself because i knew that no one was going to do it for me. >> reporter: derek is now able to afford a place to live and provide a place for his three-year-old son. >> that's the most rewarding
7:47 am
part. it's great to give a slice of pizza every now and then. for me to come here and help build rosa's up and to be able to aafford a better place in their life because they get tol work here, that's awesome. >> and derek is just one of three former homeless people that now works there and expect to see a second rosa's location open in the near future. nicely done. >> nicely done. dave telling us about the weather nicely done because things keep getting better. >> i don't mind being off with this forecast. we were talking about a little bit of snow tomorrow for the first day of spring. the storm not quite coming together. the storm will still impact the area today and tomorrow. we have a little mix coming through later today and maybe a little bit tomorrow.
7:48 am
these are two separate areas they thought were coming together and would have given us a good bit of snow tomorrow but not quite coming together in time. let's look at our temperatures right now we are into the 30s in potstown, trenton at 35. one thing that is here, the cold air. the chill was in the air this morning. 40 in philadelphia and we'll stay in the mid to low 40s today. we're not warming up much. no 60s or 70s yet. this area of snow and rain we'll talk about today. it will slowly push east. first area of low pressure moving in, the next one off the coast tomorrow will be a little farther east. we thought they would come together nice and but this one is too far out. tomorrow will be cold but not great but not talking about shoveling snow. saturday we're talking about this rain, mainly to the south. if it comes down heavy enough,
7:49 am
the air is cold enough where it could briefly mixed with some snow. but it will not accumulate much. it's only during the day and temperatures are still warm enough right at the surface. not expecting much trouble there. dealing with rain south of 95 across delaware and south jersey making its way up to the philadelphia area. that sunday storm off the coast a lot of rain and a little bit of snow trying to work its way to 95. so it could be close enough where sunday morning we could see a little bit of snow coming down for your monday morning commute. but that is the only area of concern, right along that coast. the temperatures are cold tomorrow but we have warmer weather in the 7-day forecast. spring starts tomorrow. rain and snow to the south. maybe a snow shower on monday as that cold wind sets up. still chilly monday but look at this nice improvement. we're jumping up a few degrees each day. 64 on wednesday, 70s on thursday
7:50 am
and friday. a few days late but spring is finally about to move in. >> one quick thing. our buddy says about 7:15 did we hear thunder. we didn't but i'm going to ask him where he lives. >> maybe he lives close to the building and that was the boom. >> that was 7:25. >> we'll check in with you. >> you know it happens, you take out your card and they ask you credit or debit. >> debit. >> i do debit too. >> but there are reasons you may want to use credit instead of debit. >> and a little girl in a car crash. she was unresponsive until she heard one thing in a song that got her up and moving. you're not going to want to miss this story. i drive a golf ball.
7:51 am
i drive to the hoop. i drive a racecar. i have a driver. his name is carl. but that's not what we all have in common. we talked to our doctors about treatment with xarelto®. xarelto® is proven to treat and help reduce the risk of dvt and pe blood clots. xarelto® is also proven to reduce the risk of stroke in people with afib, not caused by a heart valve problem. for people with afib currently well managed on warfarin, there is limited information on how xarelto® and warfarin compare in reducing the risk of stroke. you know, taking warfarin, i had to deal with that blood testing routine. i couldn't have a healthy salad whenever i wanted. i found another way. yeah, treatment with xarelto®.
7:52 am
hey, safety first. like all blood thinners, don't stop taking xarelto® without talking to your doctor, as this may increase your risk of a blood clot or stroke. while taking, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer for bleeding to stop. xarelto® may increase your risk of bleeding if you take certain medicines. xarelto® can cause serious and in rare cases, fatal bleeding. get help right away for unexpected bleeding, unusual bruising, or tingling. if you have had spinal anesthesia while on xarelto®, watch for back pain or any nerve or muscle related signs or symptoms. do not take xarelto® if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. tell your doctor before all planned medical or dental procedures. before starting xarelto®, tell your doctor about any kidney, liver, or bleeding problems. xarelto® is the number one prescribed blood thinner in its class. well that calls for a round of kevin nealons. make mine an arnold palmer. same here. with xarelto® there is no regular blood monitoring and no known dietary restrictions. treatment with xarelto® was the right move for us. ask your doctor about xarelto®.
7:53 am
7:54 am
>> as we do every saturday at good day, we want to introduce you to one of the region's extraordinary high school sports star. samantha crawford introduces us to a tennis player who is definitely worthy of the title athlete of the week. >> reporter: there are many athletes in the tri-state area but one in particular stands out to the fox 29 family. brandon you are this week's athlete of the week. congratulations. >> thank you. i've been playing tennis for all my life since i was five. i'm 15 now. so ten years and i've been training here for eight years. my serve is a huge weapon and a lot of people are afraid of it and my backhand is getting better now. >> he can volley well, serves well. >> i played soccer, baseball, football, just the other sport. tennis was the one that was
7:55 am
hardest i wanted to master it. >> he's here three to four times a week, combination of clinics, in a group setting, private lessons with myself and other coaches, we have a fitness area where the kids do strength conditioning and core exercises. >> his older brother plays north carolina brett has inspired brandon to play college court. >> my brother was telling me when you walk on court there's no talking and it's just warming up. everyone is serious. and i think i can rise to the challenge. >> brandon has really evolved from a player who started in the program when he was young and wasn't having wins in the sexual event and now he's starting to have more success at the sectional level. >> in order to prep for college i will work every day as hard as i can, go to practice as much as i can, focus on school, get all the best grades that i can, never fail class.
7:56 am
and just go do it. >> he's got the long hair and this long athletic build. big beautiful smile. a great kid. i think his personality mixed in with his athleticism ability to play all the shorts on the court make him a great player. >> that was great. do you have someone you would like to nominate as a high school athlete of the week tweet us. use the hashtag #fox29goodday. >> we're having a debate about the differences between men and women. spring on the way tomorrow. you're probably not thinking about flu tomorrow. health officials say maybe you should still get a flu shot. the reason why. >> what dshe say? >> i don't know. >> somebody verbally assaulted
7:57 am
that little girl. her neighbor did it. what she says set the woman off and the unconventional way the police handled this. >> we love your awkward pictures. >> we're breaking out the awkward. many years ago swapping roles. >> now they've married and have all the kids. >> awkward family photo. that one actually is. >> we'll be back.
7:59 am
8:00 am
