12:00 am
>> class? >> i think it should be a national holiday tomorrow. it certainly was a fantastic game. amazing run and came out on top. >> it was one of the best college games i've ever seen. first of all, with marcus hiting that shot four second to go. you're thinking they're going to overtime and win it with the three. chris o'connell we're going to let him regroup. we do have shawnette wilson live on campus. >> reporter: can you guys hear me? as you can see the crowd is not letting up out whoever. the celebration continues tonight as the wildcats take the championship. >> let's go nova. let's go nova. let's go nova. >> reporter: you kind of get the gist of it; right? i want to try to talk to this squaw. look at his shirt. he says party like it is 1985. we love it.
12:01 am
talk about this night. >> it's unbelievable. unbelievable. it was saturday night when they make it to the final four and tonight we see it going on. >> reporter: this shirt here tells a good tale. >> exactly. this is what happened in 1985. i was there and i'm here again. >> reporter: listen, let me tell you, we're allowing all this to happen because it's a huge celebration out here. i want to toss it back to you guys. ok? . >> crazy out there. >> she's got to bring us back a cheesesteak. i don't think she's coming back. >> the two shots, i would think people have seen them but if they haven't seen them. it's the whole story of the game
12:02 am
the last two shots. let's take a look at the last two shots of the game. north carolina down by ten under five minutes to go, down by three here, the shot -- that's amazing. that ties the game up at 74. jay wright calls the time-out. a play they worked on in practice. airplay earplug here's kris jenkins call for the ball. he called for the ball and he took the shot. and you know, mike was an assistant coach with villanova. he was next to rolly. players are happy but the expression of jay wright at the end of the game. it's like what just happened? a lot of times coaches jump up and scream. the players were and jay wright tried to keep it calm. i guess he didn't want to get any sweat on his new suit. >> custom threads. >> those are the two shots that tell you everything you need to know about the game. >> he's smiling there, howard. >> smile after the game. everybody is smile. i'm sure the plane ride home some time tomorrow is going to be a lot of smiles.
12:03 am
>> absolutely. >> i imagine there will be a big parade for villanova and lots of celebrating. the celebrate issing will be continuing. this is just the beginning. >> you're right. we're taking a look at now on campus. some of those police chris o'connell can was talking about there are plenty of them out there. some on bikes and some mounted. so far we haven't had any problem out there. students and fans are happy. the guy chris o'connell talked to didn't go to villanova and he was thrilled. so yeah, this will be going on for quite some time early into the morning and we'll get into tomorrow when villanova gets back and in the parade. long time coming. we talked about 31 years since last championship. they should be proud. >> it's electric out there. temperatures starting to drop. it's getting cold, kathy was talking about a freeze warning. we have people out there in their shorts and short sleeves. they don't care. >> they're not feel it. it's definitely going to be
12:04 am
cold. they're not feel it. there's chris o'connell found maybe a little bit of a quiet spot right now. wouldn't matter if it was raining. >> it wouldn't matter what it was doing. >> everybody loves to party. don't they? they love a parade. they got a party out there. >> let's head out to chris o'connell. >> reporter: it is very loud out here on the campus of villanova university. lancaster avenue statistic shut down, no one going anywhere. i want to talk to this guy over here. eric is an usher is the pavilion. what was it like in there tonight >> s mad house. so much fun. the kids are great i knew they were going to win because i see these kids, two, three hours before the game, prepping and stroking and the coaching that goes into it. is unbelievable.
12:05 am
i have a personal connection with the kids, with the coach. coolest thing in the world when they got off from the regional. i asked coach wright, i said do you mind if any get a photo with you? he said i know who you are, of course you can. if you don't mind talking about it, your father was 56 villanova alump. >> unfortunately he passed away yesterday. all the family is in tact. we're fine. he had cancer and was diminishing. we're trying to get him to hold on for the game. the camera found me i didn't look pour the camera. his is for you, cad can, you're an ncaa cheltenham. bob reinbold can, class of 59.
12:06 am
it's incredible. >> thanks for sharing your story. congratulations. wow, touching story from a villanova usher's dad was a 57 a alum. villanova wildcats, national champions. >> that was a great story, him being able to witness it. having a personal connection. terrific game like that. got to be great feeling. >> what nice guy jay wright is asked oh take his picture with him. he knew who he was. that had oh make him feel good. >> jay wright knows big time people you find guys in the game that have become bigger than life. he's the biggest name right now as we speak in college basketball because he won a national championship. that will never change him. that's when i when i saw somebody write a story to he's bog oh get an opportunity to go into the nba.
12:07 am
he doesn't want to. it's harder to coach those players. you get new fresh kids every few years. you can get good players all the time and they listen to you and he loves the environment of that college. loves the place in which he lives in this community out in the villanova area. and there's no reason to go. it's not about money. it's about being at a place that you really enjoy and in the nba you'll be there maybe five, six years and you're going to get fired. in villanova you can be there the next 1520's years if he wants to be. >> today was the payoff. it had to be pretty exciting for him. i was watching his face in the final moments. his hand on his brow. he kept his cool. it was kind of hard to read him. then. >> didn't want oh show panic. if you show panic, the players realize and they feel it. they were just -- they were
12:08 am
calm. it's a pressure. >> seven second, howard, left in that game. >> in the college game you have to dribble the length of the court. >> he didn't have much time and shot went up in plenty of time the official checked it. at the end of the game. you can see when the shot went up you look at the light around the basket. jay wright obviously, you know, there's a the lot of things that go into a season. we should hear from jay wright shortly and the players but it's just, they're calm after the game. they're excited but there's just something about and seniors, again, seniors on that team. something about seniors on a basketball team, which most of these big time schools don't have. >> exactly. one and donees. >> has a player that's declared north carolina will probably have players that will leave and
12:09 am
the big time schools, kansas i'm sure had have a player that's going to leave if he hasn't announce order declared already, but villanova you don't find that. it's rare that a villanova player will leave early. the guy that left early, that was two guys, scotty reynolds left early and ended up playing in europe and kyle lowry left. he probably shouldn't have and took him awhile. it's rare that players that go to villanova leave early. that's the good thing about recruiting those players that aren't going leave early but you know they're good players because i think you really have it was proven tonight. >> last night as it is right now. >> and that you can win with those kind of players. >> yep. >> you just got to believe. you got to be good.
12:10 am
and they were good. i don't know if they shot a record for shotting percentage they had one bad game, the kansas game but the defense saved them, they didn't shoot well enough, but they had an unbelievable shooting percentage throughout the game. it comes down to defense. it's amazing, three, points shot taken over the college game taken over the pro game but in the end, it comes down to defense and you got to stop the other team. 74 points for north carolina is probably one of the lowest scores, and i think the biggest deficit they had in the tournament, north carolina, was five, and villanova had them to ten. had them to ten. so there's a lot of things that happened when you win. so people will remember this for a long time. now they will live for the next 31 years for another one. i don't think jay will be
12:11 am
coaching then. >> we can cut that back a little bit, howard. >> yes. it's just, you like to see it with others. it's, it's an interesting time out there on campus. it's great. obviously, it's great for the students. brings a lot of excitement for students to go to the school. it is a good school. another thing about the players for all the big five schools. they do have to reach academic levels where -- and a lot of these big schools. you can talk about duke and i still don't believe that everybody on talk reached the academic levels they should. north carolina, they're still under investigation for tooters taking tests for players. these are the kind of things that don't happen at these schools and certainly didn't happy at villanova. your grade average better be where the supposed to be or you're not going to play
12:12 am
basketball. >> i think we can get back to chris o'connell now. chris? >> reporter: guys, are we on? >> yes. >> reporter: what's your name? . >> michael. >> reporter: you're a freshman. what's it like coming here your first year and the basketball team is a national champions? >> it's unbelievable. i never seen anything like this. unbelievable. >> reporter: you know this doesn't happy every year. >> reporter: i was inside when the final seconds wayned off that clock and it was just unbelievable to see. 5,000 students in the pavilion. there must have been tears in everyone's eyes up there.
12:13 am
it was just magical. you kind of knew it from the beginning. every single second. every single basket the wildcats said the place was in uproar. a great place to be and you see the evidence of that spilling out on to lancaster avenue. law enforcement made the decision pretty early on that they would shutdown lancaster avenue like i told before you, tons and tons of law enforcement out there. we really haven't seen any problems in terms of dis beans or anything like that. that's because i believe law enforcement police are letting them do their job, come out, have fun, celebrating, lancaster avenue shut down completely on both side at this point. thousands right now in the intersection, celebrating, no reported problems. i have a good inkling this party
12:14 am
will go on through the night. >> i have a feel you're very right. i think people of all age there is celebrating in the streets there. i believe that young man should be in bed. but. >> certainly not a college student. >> but it's exciting and if villanova is your team. once in a lifetime opportunity to be out cheering for your team and quite a win after 31 long years. >> all those people they can't all be students. let's go out and party. >> there's only 6,000 that can fit in the pavilion. >> there's some people with shawnette wilson. can can you hear me. >> reporter: i can hear you. we've had to move back a little bit. seems like lancaster avenue is thinning out just a little bit. it's getting a little cold. so i think a lot of the students are headed back inside. some of the businesses inside.
12:15 am
police still out here. streets still blocked off at this hour. just a huge celebration. take a look just down this way towards where we were a little while ago where the crowd was gathereded started to move up a bit. you could see the police cars taking a ride. making sure people are ok. we did see some students having a little bit of trouble. we know celebrations comes some drinking. i'm doing ok, how are you tonight. >> we were here in 85. philadelphia really needs this. absolutely. incredible team and just to be the powerhouse like north carolina. >> reporter: would you describe the scene out here. >> crazy. remember 85? we want give shout outs to espn. we love chris jenkins. >> reporter: thank you guys, have good night. thank you. have a good night.
12:16 am
everybody is fired up tonight. kind of getting away with a lot because it's a pretty big deal. we have secured a championship here. wildcats celebrating a huge victory. again, a lot of people headed back into some of the businesses here, the bar. police making sure that everyone is safe again, lancaster avenue blocked off. we've seen police and cruisers as we mentioned earlier on bike, some reports of police on horses. pretty much keeping a bit of a distance allowing people to george the championship as you can see everybody wants to be on tv tonight. we're kind of trying to screen people to make sure it's ok for them to be on tv tonight. again, just a huge celebration out here. we're hearing people running up and down the streets chanting let's go nova. we to it. that's the latest. toss it back to you. >> thank you. stay safe, enjoy the fun and the celebration. >> which will be going on for a
12:17 am
long time. i don't know if they're students but they're up on the traffic signal. waiving. >> weren't they supposed to agrees the poles? >> they didn't get all the way up. the traffic signals. we're keeping an eye only fire pit out here, let's hope that is a controlled kind of thing. so far, as chris talked about and shawnette we haven't seen anything, you know, unruly as of yet, there are plenty of police out there. it is still early. we'll keep an eye on these things as long as we're on the air as long as villanova is and students body and fans first national championship. >> dozens of police officers are out. closed down lancaster avenue which was probably a good idea to try to contain the crowds and keep an eye on the students and the people who are partying and
12:18 am
celebrating this big win for villanova. i believe they had a plan in action, chris o'connell said shortly after moments after nova won, lancaster avenue was shut down and that's when, of course, the thousands of kids started pouring out into the streets to celebrate. obviously, people are psyched and enjoying themselves. so far we haven't heard of time problems. shawnette said the police had to settle a few little things there. >> nothing unreasonable, so far so good. let's hope it continues. i see a couple of fire pits out there now. let's hope it stays under control. there's plenty of law enforcement out there. >> there's establishments out there, i think all those people rushing in, they better card them. there's a lot of them on lancaster avenue and there's favorites along the way people
12:19 am
go to. police will obviously keep an eye on that. >> what do you think was key really for villanova in winning it all. >> i think they just played great defense. they were well coached. it's easy to say when a team wins. i've seen teams win that aren't well coached. last play shows you how well coached. at play they practiced and it worked out perfectly. chris jenkins had to hit the shot. >> the pressure is on at that point. >> the players don't feel a lot of that with the way jay coaches these guys. so that's an important part. the key is defense. they won -- they won that kansas game with the defense. that's the only game they didn't shoot well. oklahoma, i mean, they shot it well and the defense was good. they were going to win that game the way it turned out. they played great defense, buddy hield who was probably the top five pick in the nba nine points, he probably hasn't scored nine points since eight and grade.
12:20 am
>> that was amazing. >> that's what it is. that's the key. they had players that responded, that did what they were told. they had players that can make plays. like i said, i looked at the numbers earlier and the fact they got out rounded so badly, yet they still are winning the game with ten with less than five minutes to go and still end up winning with a great shot by -- great play, not just a shot, it's the play that you run. so there's a lot of things you can look at, but i look at the way they played defense. they played amazing. that's what you needed to. you got to keep, if you played good defense, you're always going to have a chance to win the game. at the end of the game. they always had a chance to win the game of the just when you thought in the kansas game, that wasn't last weekend, kansas is down by three and villanova creates a turnover with seconds left and kansas can't gets the
12:21 am
shot off and they get the ball and win the game by five points. those are the things. you look at that. that's not exciting to play defense. people want to see shots. but that's the way they won. they want playing hard. i don't always buy, we play the villanova way. they played the way their coach taught them and they're playing at villanova. all players who don't get the minutes they didn't they should g get, they need a coach like that. so they won't worry about how much time they play but just that they do play and play for a winning team. >> i believe we can go back out to chris o'connell now. >> reporter: coming toy from the corner of lancaster avenue where you see behind me is, you may not be able to see. behind me is police in riot gear here. the good thing is these guys aren't moving. that's because there's been no
12:22 am
reported problems just yet. we did see how some toilet paper being burned in the middle of lancaster avenue, bottles being broken. that's the most extent of it. we're see at least 100 law enforcement from dozens of jurisdictions across philadelphia area. block, delaware, we're seeing philadelphia police, township of haverford, they are thick in here. but once again, fe news, no major problems. things are getting a little unruly in the middle of the intersection. we're seeing smoke and looks like toilet paper on fire. no major problems to report. as the crowd doesn't look like they're going anywhere. >> chris, jay wright is about to speak to us. hate to interrupt. let's go to jay wright.
12:23 am
tie still up. didn't even loosen his tie. >> here's jay wright. waiting for the players. >> coach wright will begin at this time. >> i want to thank jim and it's an honor to receive this trophy. great respect for jim and our national association of basketball coaches. this is our convention this weekend. that's what i'm usually doing. at the convention during the final four. it's a great pride in being a part of that organization, the national association of basketball coaches.
12:24 am
to have jim present this is really nice and it means a lot to me personally. i also want to start by saying that was one of the great college basketball games we've ever been part of. we all have great respect for north carolina. we didn't just beat a great team, which this team is. but a great program, classy program. before they determined that shot was good, roy came up to me and said, you know, i'm really disappointed for our guys. that was great game but i'm happy for you and i know he means that. he's a coach's coach and got great team. some of those seniors, bryce johnson and marcus page were just great samples of what you want college basketball players to be. they played with class. won with class and lost tonight with class.
12:25 am
we have great respect and admiration for them. for our guys, you're like a parent when you're a coach. i couldn't be prouder and couldn't be happier to see them enjoy this and fulfill their dreams. that's what it's all about for a coach, to see their eyes, to see their satisfaction, their enjoy. . there's no better feel in the world for a coach or parent. >> we're joined by national champions, ryan arcidiacono, we'd like to take students from the athletes only at this time. we'll start with nancy. >> usa today sports. ryan, you guys talked a lot about the connection that you have with the 85 team and it's often said they played the perfect game in their title game. you guys might have the greatest game ever. what is that like and can you
12:26 am
put into worked what the last five second were for you. >> first off coach wright does a great job of keeping the players around the program, even guys from, every single team from the 2000s, it's a great honor to be in that class with the 85 team, to know we'll be kind of in the same sentence is an honor. last five second started with marcus page's shot, unbelievable shot. daniel went for a loss ball to make a double clutch shot. unbelievable. did a great player and great competitor. we drew up a play, we know what play we were going to at the end because we work on it every single day if practice. if i was going to get a shot i know i knew i was going to shoot it. i heard chris in the back of my head and let it go with confidence. >> we're going to go up front towards the right side. >> arch, how fitting is it to you that the final time you
12:27 am
touched the ball as a villanova basketball player was an assist to set up the winning shot in national championship game. >> i mean, it just happened to my on that play, it could have been anyone. coach had me in that situation throughout the year. it was just an honor to run that play. i believe i was just maybe just shows how much confidence we have in each other, and that just kind of try to go find the right shot. >> to the third row on the left side. >> mike from the philadelphia inquirer for arch. two questions. hugh did you get jim's tie and number two, if you could describe what jay said and how you guys kind of reacted in the huddle before the final play. >> first, we were walking off the floor and jim dance came up to me and stopped me, and i thanked him for great tomorrow and everything he did. he said i took at the end of the tournament, i always go to the
12:28 am
winning team and to i pick a senior who inspired him throughout the tomorrow and gives him the tie and he said it was me. i was just -- i didn't know what to say. it was great honor from a really nice person, and the last play, we were just honestly we knew what we were going to do and we executed. >> next questions on the front left. >> for chris, pat from yahoo sports. what were you screaming in arch's ear and your coach said you live for those shots and why? . >> one moment was i screaming n arch's ear? i don't remember. i was able to get into his vision and i was open. i was screaming at him. for him to be so unselfish and giving up the ball, you know,
12:29 am
shows what type of person he is. and you know, we put a lot of work in, you know, this team and everybody has a confidence to catch and shoot. so when arch threw me the ball, i went to step and shoot like i was shoot on the street. >> greg logan from news day again for chris. your coach said on the court that you said in the huddle that you were going to be open. do you recall that and what are you thinking, you know, prior to that play, and you know, thinking about could you be the one to take that shot? >> well, i always take the ball out. so from previous games i realized when i take the ball out and the ball gets up the court. usually follow the ball i knew when i gave arch the ball he was going to be aggressive and they
12:30 am
were going to take arch away because he's a big shot in his career, when they all followed ball i knew if i can get in his line of vision he'll fly me. >> center on the room. the red microphone. >> this is for kris. they said if he wouldn't you wouldn't hear the he wanted of it i'm sure this summer is going to be a tough one in the house. how do you go home and handle it. >> i'm not going to sleep too much during the night but tomorrow i'll be right at him. that's for sure. i read that come comment, i said, oh, man. >> let's go to the center of the room. zach? >> zach from new york post. chris, in that vein, what does it mean not only to hit that shot, but you said you didn't want anything more than to beat your brother but to be one who actually did it. >> well, we at this time as a
