7:06 am
from the state, including constructing a real-time crime center that's expected to be up and running next month. we already have that in philadelphia, of course. this comes from the wilmington public safety strategy's commission. state lawmakers created this to help reduce all those growing violent crimes in that city. and a former new jersey mailman has admitted to stealing dozens of your hard-earned money, tax refund checks that he was supposed to be delivering. he stole 72 checks worth thousands and thousands of dollars and how much does he sell them for? 50 bucks apiece. they say those people illegally cash the checks. totalling more than $4 hundred,000. the suspect could face 15 years in prison for stealing those checks. >> officials say a 30-year-old man is missing. he was last spotted on wednesday

7:12 am
7:13 am
they're lovin' their vegetables. this is huge news!
7:14 am
it's all thanks to our birds eye chef's favorites side dishes perfectly sauced or seasoned. what are you..? shh! i'm live tweeting. oh, boy. birds eye. so veggie good. good morning. hopefully the rain will stay off our head. >> 7:14. something that people have been talking about, very serious case. wilmington's police says there are no charges yet in the death of a high school student.
7:15 am
it's been nine days. it happened in the bathroom of howard technical high school. three female students police say are considered persons of interest. they have been out of school since the incident but investigators say there's still a lot of information to review, including more than 3,000 pages of print data. >> including but not limited to scores of interviews, reinterviews, review of cellular data and electronic data. and furthermore the forensic medical reports. all these pieces go into making a strong case. >> the chief also took the time to dispel rumors regarding the teen's death. he said no weapons were used in the attack. joining us now to talk about the case, attorney heather hanson. so many people are talking about why is it taking so long. >> it really is not so long, especially in this case.
7:16 am
we're talking about teenagers. the amount of social media that teenagers engage in. the perpetrators engaged in social media, the victim engaged in social media and the police would rather get this right then do it quickly and i think it's better for them and better for the community and it's better ultimately to make sure these charges actually stick. >> the chief was talking about the data and you mentioned social media. are they also waiting for an autopsy, how this young lady died also influence the case? >> it will to some extent. it's not like the perpetrators are going to say well it was an accident we didn't mean for her to die. the fact that you are inflictling bodily injury the degree that it appears they were, certainly will merit a murder charge. whether it's second degree murder, involuntary murder. these are the types of things authorities need evidence in order to put it together. they also need to know if there were people watching it, if there were people who egged them on. people who could be charged as aiding and abetting. these are things they want to
7:17 am
consider and this community is so distraught they're doing the best they can to consider these things in the way that best serves the community and the case. >> you mentioned an the chief mentioned social media and so much involved. other people could be charged if they were watching and egging on. is going through all the social media and pictures and tweets and people claiming they were there, is all that really going to come into play? >> absolutely. that's another big part of the problem. apparently people are opening all kinds of social media pages and saying things that happened that perhaps didn't really happen and the authorities want to make sure they get this right. especially when you've got a community that's hurt thg badly. we're talking about kids it's going to affect the rest of their life. they want to get it right. i do think they've done a great job getting informed. you just want to know what's happening. so they've had a lot of press conferences. they've kept the community informed and i think that's really tried to bring down a level of emotion about the weight. >> is it a double-edged sbord because it brings down the
7:18 am
emotion. >> that's the thing. every time there's a press conference everybody expects there to be an announcement the charges are made. i think it's good to say we're still looking into it, we're just trying to get it right. i think ultimately that aetion a better way to handle it than to just keep completely quiet. >> going back to the social media because that seems to be one of the major issues. we're redefining what actually counts as evidence. these things that are out there in social media evidence or just people talking and how do you prove it? >> that's the thing. they've got to core late different social media postings. we've seen with apple and the fbi, this going to be the future of investigations. you know, csi used to be all about dna evidence, in the future it's going to be more and more about communications on social media. it's no longer leaving a note, now it's trying to trace back who was talking to who and whether these postings are real or just kids trying to get into the story. >> these are kids.
7:19 am
and i think that people are losing track of that. is it better to slow walk this because they're kids? >> absolutely. you want to slow walk it anyway because you don't want to bring charges against people who aren't merited and backtrack. but when you're dealing with juveniles, this is going to affect the rest of their lives. you want to make sure you have the people who have done this and that they're being punished but you don't want to bring in people who are not involved. >> we appreciate it. dave, the weather outside, a little gray. we said we're going to blame you. tell us there's something we could look forward to. >> we could see sunshine today maybe. at least no rain. it's cloudy and rather cold up north where the temperature in mount pocono is 40 degrees. it's above freezing but that chill is in the air. nile is wondering what the weather will be like in mount airy today. it's cloudy but dry. it looks like it could rain at any time. we'll keep a close eye on mount
7:20 am
airy and ultimate doppler. things are quiet across the area so it should stay that way for most of the day today. maybe right before midnight tonight we'll see a shower start is to work its way in from the west. our temperatures are now into the 40s. it will go up 10, maybe 15 degrees. a little bit of sunshine will help push these numbers up. here's what's happening tomorrow. big storm coming in with a warmer air trying to washing its way up the coast. however, an area of low pressure develops right off the coast of virginia and north carolina. that will keep the cool air in place so it does not look very pleasant tomorrow. the timing of this rain tomorrow morning it develops and it could be heavy at times and it's a fairly steady area and it continues throughout much of the morning and maybe breaks up a little bit throughout the afternoon and evening tomorrow but this is just looking like a rainy day tomorrow with off and on rain. most of it will be falling in the morning and the cooler weather there, sunday morning
7:21 am
and sunday afternoon, only 47, up to 52 with that cooler air in place. that warm air just does not make it up here until about monday afternoon or even tuesday, as the temperatures climb into the upper 60s and closer to 70 degrees. now we will be close to 70 and we're almost there. it's in the 7-day forecast. we'll show you how many days we'll see that warmer air coming up. >> something to look forward to. we see that 65. >> thank you so much. >> for one local sketch artist we'll tell you about it when we take you in focus. >> also get your kid off the darn couch. remember your first job right out of high school or college? there's some really good news this year if your family members are graduating. more and more companies are hiring.
7:22 am
what you can do to make your application or your kids' application stand out.
7:23 am
7:24 am
7:25 am
there were a lot of drivers that saw that and panicked and called 911. the officers got her there and pulled her back up to safety. >> good morning, i'm sean bell.
7:26 am
yesterday the eagles got a little help for their prized possession. they drafted a guard in the third round from org state and we're happy for the kid and all but the eagles fans are begging for him to be great. yesterday he arrived in philly from chicago and he had all the right things to say, ready to work hard and play whenever his name is called. >> as a competitor you want to be out there but i understand there's lot to that but i'm going to come in and learn that's not for me to decide. i'm going to learn and compete and play my tail off. i'll go out there and hopefully do well. >> to basketball, phillies, indians. we're in extra innings in the 11th. there's no need to continue this game. a walk-off shot to right field.
7:27 am
>> juit's a story a lot of peop are interested in this morning. it was trending overnight on facebook. researchers are now saying people with a particular skin disorder may be at an increased risk for alzheimer's. we'll tell you what you need to know. >> it's kind of surprising and it's really common. do you spank your kids? we've been debating this one for a long time. a new study comes out and says it's got the final word. what do you think? research efrs say they have some evidence what spanking does to your kids. we would like you to weigh in. >> and we want you to participate with the show. here comes some of the pictures from last night.
7:28 am
>> it was q everywhere at the party but thank you for the good day 20 celebration pictures.
7:29 am
7:30 am
7:31 am
>> 7:31 is the time right now. let's take a look at some of the top stories for this hour. a glimmer of hope in a pretty tragic situation. look at that, a person pulled alive, a man from the rubble of a building collapse. this is in nairobi, kenya. they were building some buildings very quickly, this construction, and they had some hef rain and they think that's what may have led to this collapse. the red cross is working to help all of those people affected because of the high demand for
7:32 am
housing in nairobi. some property developers have been unscrupulous. last year's the country's president ordered an audit of buildings to see if they were up to code after eight buildings collapsed killing 15 people. >> and nissan is recalling over 3 million vehicles in the united states because the front passenger air bags may not open during a crash. the issue is with the sensor that disables the passenger air bag. sometimes it doesn't detect there's a passenger in the seat. this is not related to the takata air bag recall. nissan has reported three injuries but thankfully no deaths. >> your help to get rid of any of your unwanted old prescription drugs. if you have drugs right now in your medicine cabinet you don't need, do the safe thing, put
