the odundi festival begins today. they take to her from 23rd and south portions of south street and also grays ferry avenue. enjoy the rest of the day, i'll see you back here bright and early tomorrow morning for good day philadelphia. >> thanks so much. we're following breaking news out of florida this morning. police say that the gunman is dead in a mass shooting at a night club in orlando. pulse orlando identified as a gay night club posted on facebook just after 2:00 this morning, really scary message. everyone get out of pulse and keep running, multiple injuries reported. but it's not clear how many people were wounded or as of this moment if anyone has died. we'll stay on top of it. of course all of that comes on the heels of another terrible shooting, a memorial service right now outside of cherokee high school in marlton for that woman right there, arising star was shot to death after a

concert appearance yesterday, there was a picture of 22-year-old christina grimmie at the memorial garden outside of the school. lots of people putting flowers there. praying, she used to go to church there. this is the suspect police have identified in connection with the shooting on friday night. 27-year-old kevin loibl of saint peters burglary traveled to orlando where christina, who was finalists on the voice was performing and he shot her to death during a meet and greets with the fans after the show. this is sad. so many back here in our community where christina grew up. >> we wanted to pay our respects and come out and say a little prayer for her. it's a hard time for all of marlton and we're all affected. >> she was just a regular girl from marlton who had talent and i just -- i just honestly couldn't believe it. >> meanwhile, investigators are still trying to figure out why that suspect shot christina, they don't believe he knew her. they also say he had two

handguns and extra loaded magazines and a large hunting knife on him. at 7:05 happening, we got more breaking news. >> three alarm fire a at an apartment building in west philadelphia. about 100 people affected. >> they were called to the 43, i block of chestnut street two hours ago, dave kinchen is live at the scene. what's going on out there. >> reporter: it is a developing story. although, it took 100 firefighters we're told to get at the fire under control here. 100 people displayed. let me step out of the way. you can a very active scene right here in west philadelphia. the netherlands apartments here. six actual buildings, four stories at 43rd and chestnut area where we are right now. crews dealing with the situation. of started in an apartment on the top floor there. fire officials tell us that part of the roof collapsed inside and that there were wires everywhere. they called out 100 firefighters

as it went to had three alarms. thankfully while there were no injuries, the new fire commissioner in philadelphia who's only been on the job a few weeks said this has been one of the most incredible fire stops he seen, because of the challenges especially here. these older buildings have been modified. that was a big challenge to get the fire under control. also a lot of heat, smoke and a hot day and humid conditions adding to the challenges here. we are also know there were no drummonds thankfully. a septa bus will help take some of the displaced residents to she woulds, the red cross is assisting. again, the fire starting on the top floor. cause is not known. the fire marshal is investigating that. call came in at 4:49 and the fire was placed under control in the 6:00 a.m. hour, not too long ago. residents will be able to get back in at some point. of course, the investigation is underway. fire commissioner saying firefighters did a great job. again, thankfully no injuries. back to you.

>> wow. thank you so much. it is 7:07. there was a bar fight ending in a stabbing. about 2:00 a.m. when police were called out. a 29 and 23-year-old woman got into some sort of altercation, one was cut in the arms, face and chest. other has minor wounds. both are in the hospital. they are expected to recover. unfortunately, the violence continues. police are investigating after man is shot to death and another in critical condition. officials were called to the 1800 block of vernon street near tasker in pointblank around 11:15 last night. they found a 21-year-old man hit several tiles in the head and chest. he later died at the hospital. the other man is in critical condition. the police say they found several guns, drugs and cash at the scene. so far, no arrests have been made. prosecutors and defense lawyers agree that a jury from outside the area should decide

the fate of eric frein who's accused of shooting two pennsylvania state troopers back in september of 2014. corporal brian dixon was killed and another seriously wounded. the stipulation to keep the trial in pike county was announce between prosecutors and his lawyers but still must be approved by a judge. frein pleaded not guilty and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. five people including children in las vegas were, there was a driver who ran a red light, lost control and hit two adults and three children. two of the victims are in the hospital with critical injuries. police say they've made one arrest and are continuing to investigate. no word on whether drugs or alcohol may have played a role. a woman in california served seven years for a crime she didn't commit is now free. there were lots of smiles and tears as kimberly long was finally released from jail.

she was convicted of killing her boyfriend and spent nearly seven years in a state prison until a riverside judge overturned the murder conviction. and ordered a new trial. now, she admitted she had a fight with her boyfriend and told police she left the house only to come back and find him beaten to death. had she's out. try to rebuild her life after the new trial. both of us are going through the process of home renovations. if you're looking to do that. some work may give you a better bang for your buck. >> where should you spend your money? these are the things you can do to improve the value of your home when you sell it. a controversial case has so many people fuming. a former stanford student brock turner what new documents are revealing about this young man's past. also, what have you been doing this weekend? share pictures with us? been at a baseball game, soccer

outrage this morning after hundreds of page as of court documents related to the sexual assault case of former stanford university swimmer brock turner were released. the documents seemed to show evidence of photos and text messages related to drug and alcohol use despite the fact that turner claimed he was an inexperienced drinker who got caught up with the college party culture. the documents quote another woman who said turner was graby and made her uncomfortable at other parties. joining us attorney ken rothweiler. good morning. >> good morning. >> i want to start backtrack. brock turner sentenced to six months. people are calling rape sexual assault, what have you. people are outraged. is that a reasonable guidelines? >> let's take a look at that. the probation department who did interviews and looked into the whole matter actually recommended to the judge that brock turner get one year or

less in jail. i know people are outraged with the judge. but the judge actually followed what probation recommended to him. it's important here to note, bill, that while he got six months. of he'll be on september 2nd. of he'll serve about half of that sentence. he'll actually serve three months in jail. >> one of the many things, people were outraged about this new information came out. now, it comes out. you find out that he had drugs in his background. he may have been aggressive to other women that same night and previously. now you find out about that. makes ruling seem more ridiculous than people thought it was before. >> yes, there's no doubt about that. there may have been actually a cell phone picture that was taken that night. we still don't know. but there's at least thought that there was. yeah, i mean, this young man, he's not as presented, he's presented to the probation department in a certain way, saying he was an inexperienced drinker. now looks like the evidence is coming out otherwise.

it won't affect the sentence. the judge will not go back and resentence. he'll get out september 2nd. here's the point. he's going to be registered for the rest of his life as a sex offender. everybody in the country knows about this young man. s this is the criminal proceeding. he's still subject to civil liability. meaning that the victim in this case can sue him and render a verdict and get a verdict against him which will follow him for the rest of his life. he's not out of the woods yet. with regard to his punishment. >> possibly neither is the judge. there's a million signatures call for a review. several 100,000 trying to recall him. are people angry and overstepping or does this judge need to face some sort of recourse. >> the judge's position would be he followed probation. people are outraged. let me ask kind of a provocative question because i believe this shines had a light on the criminal system. if this was african-american,

the question is were would he have gotten the same sentencing. >> my personal opinion, i don't think so. . >> i absolutely agree. that is why this case is important. it shines a light on the system. saying are people treated fairly with regard to punishment for the same crime? i absolutely agree with you, bill. i think if this was an african-american or hispanic, i think instead of six months, the sentence would have been six years. the other thing is important that a lot of moms and dads should realized. if you have a son or daughter at college, if your son or daughter is intoxicated, they cannot consent to sex. what that means is with all these fraternity parties and with all the drinking that goes on, if a young man is intoxicated, she cannot consent to sex. therefore, if somebody had sex with her and she's intoxicated, that, by law, is technically rape. i don't think a lot of people know that. i believe that this case actually shines a light on that

coming through a little bit later today. temperatures are into the upper 70, very warm start. not talking about the 90's. of we're only into the mid to low 80's. maybe in philadelphia, the upper 80's, but the big story is that cooler air is coming in. it will get here eventually. but before it does, this front moves through, and as it pushes through this morning, we'll see the wind really start to pick up. we're talking about a windy day with 20 to 30 or maybe higher wind gusts. and that's pretty much all day today and overnight tonight. so the temperatures will warm up a bit but the gusty winds continues. that's gusting 20 to 30. eventually the cooler air comes in. it's nice and comfortable. we'll see how long that lasts in the seven-day forecast coming up in just a bit. you're probably doing something fancy this weekend. because the weather is kind of if fy i planned to clean out the mud room and clean up your room.

. welcome back, we have a situation happening now and it is absolutely horrific. there's two big stories. let's get to the one happening at the pulse orlando. that was the message sent out about 2:00 a.m. this morning, get out and keep running. 20 people are believed dead. that is the latest number in this mass casualty shooting situation at a night club in orlando. it happened there at the pulse orlando night club. it's a situation developing. of we know that 42 people have been transported to hospitals. they're saying that the gunman was shot to death in the incident with the swat official whose came out following a gun battle.

they say he had an assault rifle and a handgun as well as another device. the other breaking news appears to be under control. an apartment fire in west philadelphia. this happened before 5:00 this morning at 43rd and chestnut streets. that fire has been controlled but took about 100 firefighters to get it to that point. hundred residents are also out of their homes at this moment. no injuries have been confirmed thus far and the cause of the fire is under investigation. 7:30, let's take a look at some of the top stories. happening today, philadelphia celebrates the lgbt community in big way at its annual parade and festival. the parade will form at 13th and locust streets around noon and march down to penns landing right outside of our door here at fox 29. and the streets of south philadelphia also expected to be jammed packed with folks celebrating odunde day.

confirmation of several deaths. the gunman is dead following a gun battle with swat officers. they say he had an sexual assault rifle, a handgun as well as some kind of explosive device and we'll continue to bring you information as we get it. breaking this morning, there was very large apartment fires. there's the scene there in west philadelphia. it's actually six buildings involved right there at 43rd and chestnut. it happened just about three hours ago and the fire has been brought under control. it happened within probably the last hour. it took a massive effort, more than 100 firefighters to bring it under control. with it being there in that area of six buildings, it was a partial collapse in this area, they had about 100 people that needed to get out. they're displaced, put on a septa bus. good news, even even though it was so large, no one was injured. the cause is under investigation. there is a memorial outside the cherokee high school in marlton, new jersey, for arising star, that singer, christina

grimmie once went to that school. she was shot to death. she went there, was well loved by so many people. there's people that are gathering to pay respects and memories and give so many prayers, students and fans remember her. she was killed friday night. police say 27-year-old kevin loibl of saint peters burglary florida traveled 100 miles to orlando where christina was a finalist on the singing competition, the voice back in 2014 was performing. investigators say he then shot her to death during one of those meet and greets with the fans after the show. this is just saddened so many people back in our community. >> we just wanted to pay our respects and come out and say a little prayer for her. it's a really hard time for all of marlton and we're all affected by it. >> she was just a regular girl from marlton who had talent and i just, i just honestly couldn't believe it. >> investigators are still trying to figure out why that suspect shot christina.

they don't think they knew her. they also say he had two handguns with extra loaded magazines and a large hunting knife on him. they're expecting to have church services at a church they were very involve in her family today to remember her as well. 8:05, a bar fight and stabbing, police were called out to 13th and locust. a 29 and 23-year-old woman got into some kind of altercation, one woman cut in the arm, face and chest. other minor wounds. both taken to the hospital and are expected to recover. police are investigating after a man is shot to death and another remains in critical condition. officials were called to the 1800 block of very and in street near tasker in pointblank around 11:15 last night. that's when they found a 21-year-old man who was hit several times in his head and chest. he later died at the hospital. the other man is currently in critical condition. police say they found several guns, drugs and cash at the scene.

store. the man in this video tried to grab the 13-year-old girl shopping with her mom. he makes a run for the door but the teen's mom catches up to him and tries to get her daughter back. the man finally let's go of the girl and takes off. an off duty deputy sees what's going on and catches the suspect. when i look at this, there's several things that come to mind. one is what have we become as a society? when somebody in broad daylight can try to kidnap a 13-year-old girl? the second thing is, stranger danger, it's amongst us. it's here. had this animal abducted that 13-year-old girl, in my opinion, based on my experience, she would probably have been sexual assaulted and killed. mom saved her life. this guy is a true animal. ♪ . >> i'm with the chief on this one.

. fish may be able to recognize your face. sounds like a weird thing to study. researchers from oxford have a new journal. they have proved at least one type of tropical fish can distinguish between human faces. of they figured out how to train a species to recognize people. those fish actually spit at their prey and video from the study posted show how this was done. the cool part is scientists never thought this would be possible. fish may be deep swimmers but they're not known to be deep thinkers. you can't fool those fish. to in fact, they recognize the faces 86 percent of the time. now those researchers need to figure out a way to see if other fish will be able to recognize people. interesting study but still

part of the back of the complex collapsed. officials say the roof fell in on the fourth floor. no injuries, but 100 people were displaced, the red cross is assisting them. a septa bus is taking them to a shelter. the new fire commissioner in philly talked about the challenges of fighting this fire. first we hear from someone who got out just in time. >> i see smoke and my first concern is for the people living there. i hope everybody got out. >> there were a lot of challenges. these buildings are often modified over time. it's hard to know exactly where the fire is. they're very large occupancies. understand that firefighters can't see anything. when they go in a building and you're seeing smoke on the outside. on the inside, they're seeing absolutely nothing. a lot of heat and smoke. it's going to heat up to be had a hot day. very tough firefighting conditions. >> reporter: you can see one of the cherry pickers on the roof taking a look what's going on

tuesday cool start. not a bad afternoon, high 78. changing weather wednesday, thursday and friday, rain willing working its way in thursday and friday and much cooler weather is here friday and saturday. around the house, you got joe hellman from hellman carpentry. we're going to do an interior door. what do we do first. >> we want to measure the door. doors come in. 20 inch, 22, 24. this door is a 30 inch or we call it a 2-6. most of the interior doors are standard at 80 inches. this one is 80 an quarter, which is perfect. we want to check to see how square the top is relative to the side. nice and square. measured the top of this hinge is four and a quarter. to the top hinge.

and then the hinges are 63 and three quarters of an inch apart. >> we got our measurements. now we got to get to work. what are the couple things to keep in mind. >> the most important is to lay out and get the door right. i have it set up how it's going to go in. even though this is a blank door, there is an inside and outside. so if you lay your square down, you can see there's a slight bevel. we want it going to the inside. if it's not bevelled or we mess that up as the door closes it will hit the jam and it's the most annoying thing ever. i've made indications on which way the hinges should be going. which way my jig is going to be set. we've already measured. we have our center locations for the hinges. now all we have to do is cut the hinges and hope i don't mess up. >> the jig is up. that's your jig. >> that is my jig.

i've already calibrated the router to the depth of the hinges and here we go. so there's our first -- you want the top of the hinge facing up. i split the top hinge and i already mounted half of it on the jam. i'm leaving the bottom hinge as it is. >> perfect. >> pretty good. there you have it. an open and shut case. thank you, we appreciate it. and that is today's around the house.
