investigation of bridge gate. on the major issue affecting the state senator rate lesniak voted no to the gas tax and voted no to allowing governor christie to profit from a book deal despite the fact that may have benefited the senator to have got more money for staff. we are joined by senator rate lesniak. back in october you said a head-to-head race with phil murphy would be impossible because he was starting the campaign $10 million. >> i decided it was possible. i cannot lay back and let the state become more unaffordable tour citizens. i'm the only person who can reform and restructure our government to make it affordable as a governor. a legislator can't do that. phil murphy is not going to do that. i want to do that. we have to do that. that's why a man, go for broke. >> we talked about this on the

radio talked about this on the radio this morning, you're really covering the basis. you sound relatively conservative when you talk about affordability. i asked you about what democrat will have the courage to have a conversation with the union about how to get to a point where everything is sustainable. it's not now. what he going are you going to do on day one? >> by the way, i'm a liberal. i'm a progressive. >> nice try bill. >> i'm for wealth -- gay rights, i've been in the forefront. but transcending those issues is affordability. if you can't have a state that supportive of most of our residents those issues have to take a backseat. my first day i have a control over education. that's where the money is spent. and of hundreds of millions of dollars that have been reported to the department of education of unauthorized spending, wasteful spending, it doesn't into a classroom and goes nowhere. we have spent ten times more in road construction. in top of it you have a panel that is going to decide on a political basis what projects

get funded. >> how do you beat a guy that is essentially john -- take to, that's already committed to putting 10 million bucks in. >> actually he's john plus, plus, plus. you go to social media shows like you, about hillary clinton, that eyeball money, or political organization. politics has changed. people want a voice in government. i'll give them that voice. >> i basically the trump trump of this race for governor new jersey? >> please don't do that to me. what i am is somebody who is going to appeal directly to the public and have a grassroots uprising to reform and restructure government. >> with all due respect to a grassroots campaign it very well could gain traction. phil murphy's been endorsed by a lot of unions, the cwa recently backed him.

how do you expect to win the democratic ticket without a lot of union support? are there still unions up for grabs? >> they made those decisions before they i was in the race. i don't expect them to change the mind but i expect their members to know about me what i have stood for and also if we don't curb government spending and the waste in government spending there's not going to be money for those union members to work. >> what about other problems such as heroin epidemic in new jersey? if you are to win and become governor of new jersey to have conversations about how you would tackle that? >> i don't have to wait until i become governor. i already have. i have a recovery school for high school kids who have substance use disorders. as the raymond j lesniak strength and hope recovery school. i expanded drug court so folks
