gift. >> tears flowed as deborah met lewis, the man who received her son's kidneys and pancreas. her son may be gone, but his gift of life lives on. >> deborah: and not only congratulations to deborah, but thank you for reaching out and sharing your story with us. that's "inside >> the senators marijuana justice that would make pot illegal at the federal level. what does it mean for the everyday person? and they just smoke a blunt in the street without being arrested? >> 60% of americans support legalization. it would just be in line with that. >> is it about polling or good policy? >> welcome to chasing news. tonight, we're talking about marijuana. not just legal marijuana for
12:31 am
medical use, but pot on the street. bonks, joints, you heard it. senator corey booker, from new jersey wants to legalize it across the board in every state. make the federal government decriminalize it and in my opinion this is a gateway to encouraging marijuana use across the streets of this great country. you know what? it started today. corey booker had a press conference today and there is a bit of a ruckus. some people told pot advocates was taken away in handcuffs. >> what's wrong with you? >> don't you know the law? are you ignorant? how ignorant are you? >> the debate is just getting started. booker has taken it beyond the state lines, beyond place where we already have legal medical
12:32 am
marijuana. he would not answer a simple question, is this law going to lead to people smoking up on the street corners in mainstreet america? he wants to make it about law-enforcement revenue. we all know the hidden agenda behind it. i'm in a bring in ashley johnson who was there today. >> senator corey booker was in town to push marijuana legalization. before he got there the police had to step in. >> what's wrong with you? the police arrested a man after he dropped medical marijuana. he was taken away in an ambulance. shortly after, booker arrived into the attention to recreational marijuana. the senators marijuana justice act would make ganja, pot, mary jane, lighting up a joint legal at the federal level. >> were not concerned about the ins and outs of the bill. they just one know if they can smoke on the street without getting arrested. what is at me for the everett a person? >> the reality is, the same with alcohol, marijuana, we need to be responsible as adults of
12:33 am
anyway be responsible use of marijuana. that's outrageous. i believe we've come to a point in society where we can and prohibition. >> standing by booker seiden taken the state was state senator nicholas kothari. he proposed to be illegal in the garden state. >> we have been doing nothing but suffer jail with nonviolent offenders. destroyed features of people that happen to be caught and wrecked their opportunity for college and a job. >> tardiness is our panel to weigh in. i want to bring in . welcome back, i know you are a professional researcher. i'm looking forward on your take on the issues. jim mcqueen, host of "new jersey now". it is good to see you. and the publisher of the state
12:34 am
jersey block, matt rennie. matt, what's your take? >> what can i say about this quest mark if you think corey booker is interested in anything other than running for president, you are high. i want to know what you are on. this is a bill that aims to legalize marijuana at a time when roughly one third of u.s. states have already moved to legalize it recreationally or medically. he's getting involved in something that's already underway at state level. yc tinkering? can senator twitter wants to get our attention. >> is that fair? i might agree with you that, is this about him running for president? >> corey booker's on the ganja himself if he thinks this bill will get past in a republican senate and house anytime soon. nothing is going to happen here. >> why is it dead? you have state after state legalize in this. colorado, california, it's be on medical marijuana. it's about recreational use. >> it's the frequency. every 13 minutes something gets busted in new jersey.
12:35 am
but, three times as many minorities get arrested fourth and widespread white art smoking pot. >> is in a racial issue? >> is a justice issue. >> corey booker has no idea what he's talking about. that's another problem with the bill. in new jersey, if you have a clean record and you have under 50 grams, unicorn to federal court anyway. we are ready have conditional discharge program which allows you to have a clean slate if you comply was certain conditions. if corey booker was sincerely interested in affecting these underprivileged appellations, maybe wha he would've done someg when he was mayor of newark. >> is a fair? >> 60% of americans support legalization. perhaps he's just in mind with the american publishing. >> is it about polling or population? >> i think it's both. people would be say the same thing if we were legalizing
12:36 am
alcohol at a different time. >> it's people pleasing policy. just because 60% of the people think they should have this, it does not mean we should have it. we have no idea what the pandora's box of law-enforcement is. the problem were giving police to enforce it. medical marijuana site i get that. but when it comes to the issue of smoking in the street, cops in colorado are telling the cops in new jersey right now, the enforcement for this, there's no standard for enforcement. >> it's not pandering for votes. millennial's have no she with this. if you break it down to young people, young people overwhelmingly want to see it legal. >> if corey booker was interested in helping law-enforcement and helping communities he would let the states decide. the challenges, newark faces different challenges than colorado and new jersey.
12:37 am
>> the states will still decide. this is taking it off the nationalists and incentivizing states to decriminalize. >> senators booker's bill as presented would punish states by take away funding if they don't comply with his vision of how america should enforce criminal law. >> talk about the policy, let's go to the bottom line. somebody comes back to your job is for a job interview and they smell of ganja, they going to get higher? select corey booker tell a person, this is the consequence. >> either way, medical marijuana seems to be here to say and i think that's a good thing. i think were down a slippery slope on this. in new jersey, regards the corey bookie, murphy becomes governor you'll see it here. tweet me, let me know or tweet the show. legalize it across the board? would you smoke it on the streets? let me know. last week we buy the story about the controversy over a religious boundary which some are calling a fence and mall wall separating
12:38 am
the hasidic jews from everyone else and that yo town. creating a space for religious orthodox practice. sibile, your jason a story, started them all off and it has gone to a purcell river. >> the air of the religious boundary consist of white pvc pipes attached to polls. they place them near the upper saddle river. there's any, hundreds of residents showed up to the borough council meeting to vent. some criticize the religious boundary as crossing the line when it comes from separation of church and state. reporters have accused critics of anti-semitism. >> i saw the picture. we talked about this last week. i cannot tell where the boundary was. however, it occurs to me that with hundreds of people coming
12:39 am
out upset, maybe there's something more behind it. i think it's too easy to dismiss this as anti-semitism. maybe there is a point. >> i think people are comfortable with the unknown. especially if there's not a lot of communication and community building between the various parts of the town. i think it comes down to building personal relationships and that is something every town needs to do. >> about the set. okay, i don't know if i buy it 100%. it's about diversity. these are some pretty diverse towns when you think about it. i look at this as something different. what about describe anti-semitism? what about the cry of hundreds of people saying that it separation of church and state? one of these were crosses? would you have as much controversy? >> one of the things are facing here, as kind and nice as all
12:40 am
these people look when they come to a town meeting, and town meetings people hardly ever come to. what are you can a protest? now they find something to protest. the dirty truth of this is, these are nice people with nice faces and families, sane and thinking, and doing very bad things. there's no way you can cover this over and say that it doesn't have an anti-semitic feel for the whole thing. that's ridiculous. that's the truth. >> what about outsider group coming in? where did the original groups are? in your? >> it's not an outsider group. it's 100 yards across the state line on the border. it's not like they're coming from the south to the north and the north to the south. this is where they went a little expansion of their territory to do things in a religious way like walking carriages and going to parks. if you don't think it wasn't racism, why did the same town council put up signs outline out-of-state people from using the parks. >> i am intrigued and slightly horrified.
12:41 am
the first amendment as i believe to understand it is a two-way street. that means religious groups, everybody in this country have rights to expression, religious, free-speech. you also don't get to shut other people down because they are racist and they don't agree with you. most towns outlaw certain things, whether a yard sale sign or something like across a religious symbol getting put on a public telephone pole. >> i think the separation of church and state seems ridiculous when we talk about utility poles. there's been a big cry to stop the ten commandments and stop nativity scenes. i can imagine that one religious and should be allowed over others. it's more the pvc pipe, it's absolutely a religious symbol. >> i don't think we favor one over the other. i think there's christian symbols in many places. i don't think you have a favoritism for jewish pacifism in the west.
12:42 am
>> thank you. >> here's a look at some of the headlines. the white house says it's time to end the leaks after special counsel robert mueller impaneled a grand jury to look into alleged meddling by russian the 2016 election. >> i have this warning for would be leakers, don't do it. >> dunkin' donuts may be dropping the word donuts from its name. a new location of the chain in pasadena, california might sibley be called duncan, move the parent company calls a test. the change wants people to think of a store as a place to grab coffee even though they were still so donuts. the won't make a decision on the name until next year. here's a look at what's coming up next on chasing news. >> i'm new jersey one oh 1.5 meteorologist. the first weekend of august is upon us. the forecast is looking for a good. one or two hiccups along the way. i will talk about those in your complete forecast, coming up.
12:43 am
12:46 am
her home in newark. she died from her injuries on monday. her legit assailant is 49-year-old bruce hey, his attempted murder charge could be upgraded to murder since her death. and a son is a prominent muslim imam in newark, himself. i met him on the steps of his home. >> i was say all of this on a human level is in the state of oblivion where we really couldn't, were just trying to get through these few days, through the planning for the funeral and then maybe we'll get some time and try to process it. it will affect each and every one of us in a different way. >> last year, according to mayor crime was at a 50 year low. so with the stories of violence continually popping up, is that will enough? will newark ever be safe? >> thank you for the panel first to go with us.
12:47 am
we appreciate you being here, jim, matt, i think it is -- when you think about newark as a city, city of violence and has a reputation of violence for decades. here, you have an 85-year-old woman brutally beaten and murdered in her home. when i hear the story of this what is allegedly a home invasion and a woman beaten and killed by someone she knows, i don't know that is speaks to the overall picture of violence in newark. but, the idea that you have a mayor and a police commissioner that are talking about lowering the crime. there are still pockets where you can't walk during the day, let alone at night. >> such as what's happening in that city. suburban new jersey needs to practice how complicit they are in these crimes. the all about drugs and buying drugs and protecting turf.
12:48 am
i went to that south, i met a child of a school a nice go during lunch break meet his teacher and go for walk. one day we lucked ru walked alog that street and i see bad news on the corner and say we better cross the street. and you have to work at things like this and an suv and it was going 78 to get out of suburbia. they were buying drugs. >> so it's a suburban women, and then and their suvs? that's why newark is a chaotic crazy place question. >> when i was a woman, meant t to,. >> excuse my privilege. first of all i need to say that. i seem to remember in the 1990s with rudy giuliani cleaned up new york city it had nothing to do with legalizing mary on marijuana. he did it because he -- there is
12:49 am
caps on the street that were supported and they knew they had support. there are stop and frisk, he also supported businesses. and then we have new york city of the 2000. >> you're in a suburban new jersey town, who knew it was your fault that the cities are falling apart. >> i'm not sure about that part. i think policing is one part of the solution. >> how can cops be expected to patrol the streets and be accepted as the arbiter of peace and law and order when you have group after group hammering the cops? i've been to the city of the southward and i got my shoeshine and pass, what you feel like when he see the cops on the street and they said, think of the cops are here to protect us. >> hello, i'm the chief meteorologist, dan, let's talk about the weekend weather forecast.
12:50 am
i am sick of thunderstorms. as we move into the first weekend of august things will be much quieter. there will be much more comfortable around here. tonight is a cold front night. that means a couple of things for the weather. number one, we will see around of showers and thunderstorms push the the tri-state area by daybreak on saturday. it's possible the rain fizzles as it approaches the coast. you might not see rain at all, or you might wake up on saturday morning. so by the afternoon thanks will be comfortable i will see clearing skies through saturday afternoon as well. temperatures will be in the lower '80s so saturday will turn into a beautiful day. so saturday night sunday a real pleasant day as well high temperatures around 80 degrees. were watching our next storm system that needs to come in
12:51 am
sunday evening there's a slight chance, think rain and clouds will hold off till early next week on monday things could be dreary and gray as things have back to work. enjoy your weekend. here's a look at some of the other headlines were chasing today they miss watching game of thrones on sunday night. so, she did something about it, she offers a special meal which guests can enjoy watching it. >> no utensils, you have to get in there with their hands. after you have beaten your in yourself silly -- >> star wars fans might want to trip plan a trip to disneyland or walt disney world for a virtual-reality experience. star wars, secrets of the empire will open this holiday season at the california and florida theme parks. that's a look at the headlines for chasing today. >> this weekend is the kentucky
12:55 am
>> this weekend is the kentucky derby of harness racing. that will take place at new jersey's meadowlands racetrack. and that means another chance to win a million dollars. >> when i come to these races they normally have something in the final every time. >> for jimmy, harness racing runs in his blood. where his father ran a successful stable of -- human to
12:56 am
the states in 1978 and one of the world's leading trainers. >> i met up with jimmy at his stable in new jersey where he trains horses. but today, it's about two horses that could become world renown, come saturday. if you wonder, arianna g is named after popstar, ariana grande a. >> for me, so spatial. i'm with her from the beginning. in the will go to the races. and that will make superstar out of them. that's excitement. >> it's an excitement jimmy knows all too well, after all he
12:57 am
has one before, four times he is one. this year, or interesting. his top runner in the race just pulled out due to an injury. >> if he was in it it would be his favorite most like it would've won the race. at night made the race wide open. >> i want to hear from you, who do you think is gonna win? tweet me at chasing news. >> another great native chasing news. thanks for watching. last night we did a story on turnstile jumpers in manhattan where people were stealing services where people get on the subway for free. i suggested we need to increase the penalties instead of one day in jail and hundred dollar fine i said 30 days and a thousand dollar fine.
12:58 am
if you want to stop that practice of turnstile jumping, that will do it. one of your took to twitter and said because of that position, i was in a quote, a racist a whole. then he went further and said that those of us here at chasing news, because of that broadcast want to put all of his people away for jump in the turnstile. here's my question, who are your people? what does that mean? is there some land of turnstile jumpers i'm not aware of? let's call it turnstile -- and we have nothing against people who want to ride the subway. but you have to pay the fair. if you heard something on tonight's show but i've said that you really agree with, or you can't wait to let your vent out and let me hear what you have to say, tweet me a bill spady and the show at chasing news. have a great weekend. news. have a great weekend. i will see you monday.
12:59 am
