well, some say that he was a former slave owner and this is an outrageous extension of the controversy but we have all of the details. we have more. >> that's right, stockton university in galloway, new jersey, is another institution feeling the ripple effect of the charlottesville, virginia, race riots. richard stockton was a slave owner. with racial and political tensions high, he was removed from the college's library. in a letter to the students he returned to the library to promote a healthy conversation between students and faculty and the administration about the name of and if they are going to change in the future. you

alice, what went through your mind the minute that you heard that the bus was taken out of the library at stockton state university? >> i almost blew a gasket. i cannot believe it. not that it didn't occur to me when i was standing in columbus circle talk to people this week about whether or not christopher columbus took him down. not that it didn't occur to me about robert lee. i knew that i was a direct descendent of richard stockton. yes, he was a slave owner, who is not a slave owner at that time. that was what people did come of these people that worked on the farms. he was also a founding father. the whole point of the constitution is that all men would be created equal. >> is your mother mrs. stockton? >> yes, that is right. >> let me ask you, how are you related reign.

it is. ♪ ♪ >> there is a huge hurricane coming out of the gulf of mexico as we are talking to you now. it is hitting the texas coast. we have our chief meteorologist to give us the details. >> that's right, the storm has intensified over the last 24 hours. you know, we have the usual hurricane threat. wind speeds are measured up to 110 miles per hour. we have the storm surge over 12 feet possible. and the big problem is going to be the rain. this storm is just going to sit over the texas coast for tonight and tomorrow and sunday and monday and tuesday as well. in that time frame the rainfall could be measured up to 3 feet of rain. >> thank you, dan. >> no problem. >> see you in a little better. here are the headlines.

>> welcome back to "chasing news." i am your host, as i mentioned before we have a story about the meadowlands. this story has been going on since 2002. they say that we are going to have something that creates jobs and revenue. according to the politicians that is all good.

ryan has the full story. >> it has been almost 15 years of controversy and stops and starts. the giant retail and entertainment developer alongside the new jersey turnpike in the meadowlands. but it looks like it's finally going to happen. financing is in place, new opening date is set and the question now becomes not only will it open but will it work. the malls across the country are closing, retail siege from at shopping. is this going to be another white elephant like the rebel casino in atlantic city? the chief operating officer took that question head on in a press conference. >> what makes you guys so different? everyone talks about this. about how they are talking about entertainment.

>> it was keeping it from becoming just another close down mall. i am brian donahue. >> the meadowlands project has been part of this. >> does this make you excited? >> we started and stopped, we decided that hopefully this one will be the one that will work.

way of marking it. local neighbors are saying why are you upset, more importantly they were saying that they were not bullet holes. you have the full story. >> there is a new sandwich shop in crown heights, brooklyn. at the center of a controversy. it started when summerhill sent out this press release introducing their owner and her new business. the press release had highlighted the shop's instagram friendly decor and touted a rumor that it was a bullet hole ridden wall. crown heights has a history of gun violence and locals say the description is insensitive and makes light of a very violent history. >> people are saying these are gunshot holes and you are being insensitive. what you say to people that are saying that? >> i am saying that they are

offended and i'm sorry about that. >> according to her, the comment in the press release was just a joke. but the damage was already done. yesterday marked the 200th day in the community without gun violence. crown heights residents voiced their concerns to her, hoping they would understand the pain and take down the wall. >> the meeting ended with both sides frustrated and the issue unresolved. >> people are just so sensitive. who cares? even if they were bullet holes or not. would you market this way? >> i don't know that i would market that way.

they have this plays where he got shot. and if the bulletholes drive business away, she will learn her lesson. if that is her your take, that is her right to do that. >> what do you think? you are in paterson. they haven't experienced horrific violence over the past two decades. >> no, that is not the showcasing we want to do. you want to let your hair down, let it be a welcoming place. so i think that the owners should show sensitivity that she relocated to this community and they should work with residents to come up with the design and the model that works. >> as far as i am concerned she is even going to be the catalyst of the week or setting up shop somewhere else. >> this is a different story.

the other one was a state college, this is a private institution. people do not want to patronize -- fine. what concerns me is about this rose wine and putting it in brown paper bags. i think that that is a direct stereotype. and if people don't want to go, don't go. >> even the brown paper bag. i grew up in a white neighborhood, that is what they did on the street, they put it in the bag and then they drink their alcohol. [laughter] >> that is what they do. >> there has to be a sensitivity there has to be an accountability. enough already.

>> meet david. he is a retired electrician. a former reenactor and commander of new jersey's sons of confederate veterans. you might expect that in georgia or mississippi, but david is committed to telling the story of the losing side of the civil war. >> you have to realize that not every soldier is fighting to preserve to get rid of the institution of slavery. it fell for a variety of reasons. with all the recent controversy to terrorist attacks in virginia, i wanted to talk to you today about what it is like to be a confederate. so i met him at the library for a lesson. >> my great-grandfather here -- why did he do all this?

>> i look at my ancestors and i had ancestors on both sides. they are not here to tell their story. but it is part of my history. >> they do not accept anyone who is a member of a white supremacist organization. he has a special anger for those that carry the confederate flag as a symbol of white supremacy. >> leave the confederate flag alone. go find your own flag. you know, while you are at it, why don't you go to a deserted island. you guys can fight each other. >> he is also a member of a group collecting items related to the civil war for years before he found out about these routes. he advocates this bygone era in which he has a lot of feelings.
