(upbeat synthesizer music) - when our parents were growing up, they probably never heard of gluten. - no, i had no idea what gluten was when i was a kid. - no idea about gluten, none. - when i was a kid, if i knew what gluten was? yeah, no, i didn't know that, no. - no. - no. - no. - no. no, we had no idea what gluten was. - gluten? no, not really. i mean, i ate it, but didn't know what it was. - but these days, you can hardly walk down a grocery aisle or read a menu that doesn't mention gluten,

though usually in a negative way. as in "doesn't contain gluten" or "gluten free." but do you know what gluten is? - gluten, um... i think it's some kind of a, i don't know. - well, i know that some people can't have it in their food. - i don't know exactly what it is, but it's something found in wheat that some people have sensitivities or allergies to. - gluten is sort of a family name for proteins in many of the grains we eat. the three most common grains are wheat, barley, and rye, but there are lots of others. think of gluten as a sort of an edible adhesive. in fact, the word comes from, you guessed it, glue. gluten keeps food from falling apart. and for most of us, there's no problem eating foods with gluten. but some people are sensitive to gluten and it may cause them all sorts of medical problems, so they avoid it. but that's tough because gluten is in a surprising variety of foods. for example.

- gluten is in pastries and cereal. - cakes, croissants, muffin. - bread and pizza because there's bread with it. - i think bagels. - pasta. - crackers. - just any bread product. - pizza has it. cookies has it. - cookies, candy. - yes, all correct. gluten may also be found in pretzels, doughnuts, waffles, granola bars, soups, even candy, just to name a few. so should everyone stop eating things that have gluten? not necessarily. first of all, you need to speak with your doctor to find out if gluten is a problem for you. if it's not, cutting out all gluten from your diet may cause you to miss out on getting the fiber and nutrients you need. and that just might make you a gluten for punishment. for teen kids news, i'm daniella. - ever take a close look at your state flag? you should because you might be surprised at how much you can learn from it. (upbeat drum music) - if you ask someone what state they're from and they hold up their hand like this, they're from michigan. here's detroit. the state is shaped like a mitten with a hat on it. michigan is made up of two peninsulas.

the lower and the upper, called the up. - in english, the michigan motto means "if you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you." a peninsula is a body of land surrounded on three sides by water. and michigan has an extensive coastline. there are the four great lakes. they're michigan, huron, erie, and superior. - [ellie] and it's right there on the flag, the latin for "if you seek a pleasant peninsula, look around you." you'll also find lots of water. michigan has more coastline than any state but alaska. - and this is actually how the missionaries and the fur trappers that settled the land first got there. - [ellie] that's one of them on the shore in the center of the flag. although he's holding a gun, he's waving. a peaceful gesture, you might say. but then there's this word. - tuebor means "i will defend" and dates back to 1835 when tensions rose so high between the neighboring states, michigan and ohio, that they almost went to war. - there's more latin across the top. you'll recognize "e pluribus unum."

one from many. a salute to the diversity that helps make this country great. oh, almost forgot. move over diagon alley. the michigan town of colon is home to the biggest maker of magical supplies. with flag facts, i'm ellie. - want to do well in school? my advice is to take all the advice you can get. here's christin with some tips to help you make the grade. - teachers, guidance counselors, and parents will give you lots of good reasons why you should try hard to visit the colleges you're interested in applying to. for example, it's the best way to see what the campus is like, from classrooms to dorms to recreation areas. but there's another big reason to visit a school, especially if you're not even a high school junior yet. the visit may help give you a better idea of the kind of student that college is looking for. and that might influence the choices you make in high school. you may opt for more science classes or join the debate club

or model un or maybe strive for more leadership roles. the earlier you know those things, the better your chances of modeling yourself as the school's ideal student. i'm christin, here to help you to make the grade. (upbeat orchestral music) - now for our series called guess the president. i'll come up with the clues, see if you can come up with the answer. this virginian's nickname was old rough and ready. though a slave-owner, he threatened force against southern states that wanted to withdraw from the union. he served 40 years in the army, but was president for less than two years. he died in office after eating cherries and milk at a 4th of july celebration. he was our 12th president, zachary taylor. he may have also been one of our most penny pinching presidents.

- have you ever set up a lemonade stand or a car wash in your front yard for the day? or thought of a great idea for a company? eden gets some advice on how to turn your ideas into a money making enterprise. - over the years, we've introduced you to teens who started their own businesses. there's maddie who sells jewelry made from bottle caps. and mary grace has stores selling her various embroidered items. these young entrepreneurs all have two things in common: a good idea and the passion to implement it. you don't need to be a genius to become

the next steve jobs or mark zuckerberg. but you do need a good business plan. and to tell us more about that, is terri liselle. she's an author and an expert on young adult entrepreneurs. hi. - hi. - what got you interested in teen entrepreneurship? - well, funny story, when i was really young, i started a bake sale with my friends and we actually made a profit from it. and later on down the road when i was an older teen, i decided to start my own electronic t-shirt business, which was a lot of fun. so, an entrepreneur is someone who starts a business and a teenpreneur is a teen entrepreneur who also has their own business, makes their own money, and they solve a real life need. - so let's say i want to create a business, how do i start? - well, the first thing i like to ask is: what is your hobby or talent? are you good at dancing? are you good with computers? or also, take a look at your environment. is there something in your environment

that if you came up with a solution, it will fulfill a need? - you recommend creating a five-point business plan. let's walk through that step by step, starting with the idea. - all right, the idea. the first thing you need to do is figure out the who, what, when, where, and why of your business and how you're gonna do it. so write down, who you are, what you're doing, and how you're going to do it, and what i would like to recommend is create a one sentence mission statement of your company. and what you're going to do and how's it going to help so many people out there. - the second point in your business plan is something we already do for school projects and that's research. - yes, research. researching your business is a lot of fun. it's like being a detective. first, you may want to find out who your competitor is. what they're good at and how you can do it even better. also, find out your customer. talk to your friends and family of what you're doing and start building a list of customers for your new business.

- [eden] the next is the daily plan. - yes, the daily plan. and what i like to call operations. you want to work on your business every day. it's like a plant. you want to water it every day to see it grow. and then you want to find out what you need to do and how you're going to do it. do you need to make a video? do you need to talk to more friends about your business, or do you want to make a cool gadget? - what about the fourth point, the future? - the future. now you're going to be in business for the long haul. so you want to project what you're going to be doing over the next five years. write down your goals for the first year, second, third, fourth, and fifth year and this will help you see your growth over time. and that brings us to the last, and possibly the most important part of the plan, the cash. - every business needs cash. and we like to call it start up capital. talk to your friends and family about them investing into your company

and reassure them that you'll pay them back. look into your savings or your allowances. and i like to say, focus on very three important things in your business. the first thing is the price, what you'll sell it as. the cost that it will take to make your product, and also the quantity of products that you'll like to sell. with these things, you've figured out your profit. - okay, so now we have our business plan. any suggestions on some of the ways teens can become teenpreneurs? - absolutely. the first thing to do is take a look at skills and hobbies. if you're really good at piano, create piano lessons as your business. if you're good at writing, there's plenty of opportunities to write blogs. and if you're computer savvy, you can create websites as a business. you can take a look at more opportunities and ideas on my website. - of course once money starts rolling in, we need a way to manage it. what do you think about setting up a student paypal account?

- there are a lot of benefits, but i would suggest talk to your parents about that first. - thanks so much. your advice certainly makes sense and hopefully lots of dollars, too. - thank you. - no question, starting your own business takes a lot of work, but it can be a lot of fun, and great for your college application. in fact, it might even help you pay for college. for teen kids news, i'm eden. (playful pop music) (screams) - probably the greatest sculptor in history was michelangelo buonarroti. and he wasn't shy about it. while visiting st. peter's basilica, he overheard some visitors admiring his work. the marble sculpture, called the pieta, showed mary tenderly holding jesus christ after his crucifixion. unfortunately, the admirers mistakenly credited another artist with creating it. his pride hurt, michelangelo came back at night,

quietly snuck into the church, and carved a message in the sash across mary's chest. it says, "michelangelo buonarroti, florentine, made this." he later regretted his impetuous action. and he never signed another of his sculptures. but then, he probably didn't need to. michelangelo became so famous during his lifetime, his work was known far and wide. with art smart, i'm katie. - [man] it's time for word. here's a chance to test your vocabulary. find the real meaning that matches the word. let's start with this one: ephemeral. is it an adjective that means having to do with art painted on a wall? is it an adjective that means lasting only a short time? or a noun that means the generic name of a pain relief medicine? (bell rings) the answer is: lasting only a short time. this game of word is ephemeral, but the lessons last a lifetime. we hope. let's try this one: irrigate.

it's a verb. maybe it means to annoy constantly. or it could mean to make wet or supply with water. or it means to drill with a rotating tool. ouch! (bell rings) no, irrigate is a nice verb. it means to make wet, or supply with water. farmers irrigate their land so crops will grow. now let's try this: superfluous. it's an adjective that means either beyond what is necessary, extremely graceful, or being really, really sick with the flu. (bell rings) superfluous means beyond what is necessary. just your thanks for this game of word is enough, anything more would be superfluous, but i'll take it anyway. ephemeral, lasting only a short time. irrigate, to supply with water. superfluous, beyond what is necessary. that's word for kids news. - it's time for another important message from the national road safety foundation.

(car engine revving) (upbeat synthesizer music) - hey. - oh. woo hoo!

- coming up on teen kids news, i've got a recipe that will help take the bite out of doing homework, so don't go away.

that's famous for training chefs. and one of those chefs-in-training is going to share another great recipe. i can't wait. - sometimes you need a little boost of energy while doing homework. well, my chocolate orange energy bites should do the trick. here's what you'll need. first, we're going to start off with vanilla extract. orange zest which is just the peel of the orange. and you can use a cheese grater to just grate the peel right off of the orange. followed by orange juice, honey, shredded coconut, peanut butter, instant oats, and chocolate. now the first thing you're going to do is you're going to line a sheet tray with parchment paper and keep it to the side. and then you combine all of your ingredients into the same bowl, except for the chocolate.

so all the ingredients. make sure you clean as you go. the honey. get a spatula in there, make sure you get it all out. shredded coconut. the peanut butter. and last but not least, the instant oats. and you're just going to combine all of these ingredients in the bowl with your rubber spatula until it is well combined. makes a nice dough. so once you have it all combined in the bowl here, here's where the fun part comes in.

so we're gonna slide this over, bring our cookie sheet on to our counter here. and this is where you get your hand in it. so here at the cia, or the culinary institute of america, it's a rule that we wear gloves when we're preparing food for other people, but since i'm just showing you how to make these, i'm not going to wear gloves. so we're going to take about a golf ball size of the energy bite and roll them into nice uniform balls. trying to make sure that each is exactly the same size. this is where the fun part comes in. it's a little messy, but if you're not having fun in the kitchen, what's the point? and there's our 10 bites.

so the next step is to drizzle the chocolate over the energy bites. and i'm going to show you my technique on how to drizzle. so we're going to start with a right angled triangle of piece of parchment paper and you're simply just going to roll it up on itself, making a cone shape. and then taking the tail and rolling and rolling it up and then tightening and then bending it inside of one another. now this is how you make a cornet, but i already have one here full of chocolate and you're going to take this cornet and use a pair of scissors to snip off the end, so the chocolate can flow freely. and then once you do that, you're slowly just going to put a little pressure on the cornet and start drizzling back and forth on every energy bite until they are all complete.

now that you have put the chocolate on the energy bites, these energy bites will go in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes just to set up. so these are the finished energy bites after they've been chilled in the refrigerator. and these energy bites get me through a long day of school or just give me that extra boost to finish throughout the day. at the culinary institute of america, for teen kids news, i'm cody. - that's a recipe i've got to try. that's all for this week's show, but be sure to tune in next week for more teen kids news.
