bill: take a look at this video is? it offense sniff. >> some say it is. >> the image of that is showing its not good to be black. >> dove actually took it down. we break that down for you on the show. and hurricane nate downgraded after it made land fall. how will it impact our area. i am bill spadea, this is chasing news. it is columbus day. it is a day celebrated every year and revered by italian americans across the the great country. a lot of kids off school but not without contro visor. there is a six-foot statute of christopher columbus in slocumb park. one organization wants to site taken done. he he ises no being quiet about it. i want to introduce to you
3:01 am
walter allah mar. walter, welcome to chasing news. how are you? >> thank you. i am good. thank you having me. bill: the statute has been up since 1961. do you think it is offensive? why, why do you want to site taken down? >> let me start by saying it is not italian movement and we are fond of the italian american culture in this country. but just like any other culture in any other nation, we have positive and negatives and in this instance, the statute of columbus is a name. i think also one of the main problems is that many americans are unaware of the atrocities that actually submitted against the indigenous people in the caribbean. bill: so walter, let me ask you. we could go back and forth. i am sure you read up on the different tribes that columbus discovered and the different battles in the cannibalism and
3:02 am
all of that. astride that, why take the statute down knowing what it represents todays the discovery of the new world and the opportunity for people to live free and prosperous. that is what it means? why take it down into well, when you look at theostat out. you are of black or hispanic decent. that is a recommendation of the genocide that occurred to our people and they are celebrating it in a town that is rich in history. bill: the challenge with that that is genocide never happened. it is not historically accurate. you know you are now on the same side as the ku klux klan. clue klux can fought in the 19 30's saying you cannot have a national holiday. >> that is absurd. if it is up to the ku klux klan, if you know the homework anothe last rish you cannot put the two together. i think you need do the homework there.
3:03 am
great to talk to you. what is next? >> mayor from what i understand. >> it is in the works. we will discuss what will happen. just simply move though proper police the italian american museum and not in front of a nation that is a neighborhood that is black and hispanic. ok. walter alomar thank you for joining us. appreciate. >> all right. thanks. >> i am joined by dr. henry and pediatrician. dr. liz good to. >> i there is a history of atrocities across the globe and to me it seems we're take it out of context. >> i would say it is not politically motivated but you have to keep in mind, they are take on what they want. they are signing petitions. this is what they want.
3:04 am
they should do what the community wants. they live in the town. they are in the community. >> what do you you? i well, i think the removal of the statute. it takes us down a slippery slope. columbus did atrocious things and he did not discover america in 1492 so history. so the problem is the history is right. the histories history. he did not do it. this is the problem people have. they don't understand the hest riff the different tribes and the alliance they had with the indians so i wish we had timing. the statute itself i see is a part of history and takes us down a slippery slope remove that statute and when the community fanned the come continuity changes, supposette changes to a white come tin. >> so you change the monuments. >> no, people come in. that is what i am saying. so i would be for leaving it for where it is, but also,
3:05 am
acknowledging that the trint history, what columbus has done. >> wouldn't it be better to acknowledge the truth. that they report on it. they are take little pieces. did you knee columbus has his own men? >> i think we're not getting to the real history here. don't you think is something to be upset about? no, i don't. i think people are needing to know the truth and are taught the truth in school. dari: wish. that is whole other subject. thanks, guys. >> thank you. bill: new jersey is a state that has more school districts than it has towns and municipalities in many district there are superintendents who are making between 160 and 215,000 a year. now despite a cap being put in place for teacher's salaries and other administrative salaries they figured out a way around the cap. it is a year end bonus and some of them are as hi as between 20
3:06 am
and 40,000. i want to bring tin news reporter sergio from new jersey 101.5 who brock the story and did the research. sergio, welcome to chasing news. >> thanks for having me, bill. bill: first of all, what tipped off? i have been ranting for a couple of years now. you had no idea if they could figure the work around. what tipped you off? what kind of research did you do to come boo pile. i started looking into it in the state, they raised the cap so the old cap and the large district to make was $175,000 and make 192,000 fawned look at the state, they get all much more than. not only do they get bonuses up to 15% of the cap, but they also get extra health benefit, they don't get. they get allowance every year that are not capped at all and 40,000 in addition to the bonus
3:07 am
and the salary tap. >> what are the more egregious ones tweep cycle ry bonus in a ally upses a. well, the superintendent has school district with less than 600 students and the salary should have been capped under the law of $135,000 and 60,000 and bonus allowances. >> why dow knee. >> oh, i know. governor christie. anyway, ser geo, thank you for joining me on chasing news. appreciate. >> not a problem. bill: great job on the report, too. all right. let's bring back the panel. you were on the school board. youer that, 68,000, 40,000. let's forget about the salary force a minute. it is expensive to live in new jersey. i don't want to downplay the job they do. i find it offense. >> i right. yes. i do agree that it is offensive and horrible to see.
3:08 am
let's put taxes in terms of education and we do need to foe cons the education. but instead of cutting the cap on the salary, we cut for their bonuses that they are getting and also think about the political connector that's the people have like we mentioned governor christie does live in the town. so perhaps, there is a lot of political influences that are aiding to the salary. >> don't you think it would make more sense. let me ask this you. i would like to see the bonuses divide up among teachers who are doing the work the kids directly. teachers made less money since the cap took place in 2011 now you got the bureau cats making $200 grand a year. that is offensive. >> i agree. first of a all, be what are they based on? are they based on performance officersly in a lot of the schools may not even be former. why are they getting the bows ins? so i would like to knee. yes, i think, the teachers are
3:09 am
underpaid so to have the super in dense get around the cap and get bonuses and allowances with no cap at all. the teachers who aren there the day to day grind are getting paid, you know, salary. >> you don't agree 100%. i could get rid of all them. uz compromise in the small towns? >> well, some of the small towns if they are able to do so, perhaps. but overall, we do need a superintendent to see the systems and keep them running smoothly and effect efly. bill: ok, thanks, guys. hurricane nate made landfall and is impacting our weather. let's check win meteorologist dan zarrow, what do you got. dan? meteorologist: a couple hundred miles to the west and north today. of course of course we saw some wind and rain upwards of that inch rainfall in some spots across the area but the ground so dry and sos this at this time sucked up the water and when you did not have any widespread flooding issues to deal with from nate.
3:10 am
was this less impact than you thought we would have. they were talking about a much greater impact in new orleans and mississippi. less or what you weeks sneak well, i think, it has a lot to do with the forward speed of the storm actually the fastest moving tropical cyclone ever reported the gulf exco and it was book it at 2,000 through the watt sore didn't have time to pk up strength and intensity. i affect the trajectory moving it to this left away from the tristate area and the storm could not sit over one location and it rained in the moved on again. it has a lot to do with the overall impact of the storm. bill: ok, thanks. we check in with you later with the local weather. coming up, did this video add phones. some say we're being too sensitive. all this of that coming up plus dan zarrow with the weather. meteorologist: coming up, beautiful weather returns for ail bit across the tristate area.

3:17 am
that is the problem. >> do you think the ad marketing people to put this together were racists? >> i think it is subconscious boy as and that is the problem with corporate america and is you have to look at who is in the suite. it tells me. will go g out on a limb. in that suite, there was not a lot of diverse in there. they need more diversity. that is the final line. well, we done knee. we don't know who the executives in charge of dove are. i certainly don't know. if there were people of color. >> are you saying they are racists and don't know it? >> i am saying they have a certain form of bias due to where they come from and their experience and being not from a person of color and black back gunned, they are not telling automatically look through that lens. >> all right. >> all right. they need again, they need that second lens to have that open understanding where we are coming from.
3:18 am
>> why do people get so phoned though so quickly with a three second ad on facebook? isn't it enough to say, i don't like that. would i would immediately make assumption they are racists? >> well, because nowadays, especially when i was growing up. there were not imagings, good im mains of black women, black people in general until it shows the cosby show and there were more, people line shanda rhymes now in film crow eight new stories for black america and so now when you see those, we want those stories to be told. >> thank you for being here. >> thank. >> appreciate. you. bill: today as it big day not only celebrating co lums about day but the start of the annual bear hunt. not everybody happy about it. but under governor crists christies ty this has been a regular thing with hunters killing hundreds of bears every year. they have to thin the population. the full story and bring in
