through our area. we have the full report. this is chasing news. big news in the corruption and bribery trial of bob menendez. it wrapped up in court today as the judge denied a defense request for a mistrial. this is after a long list of high-profile democrats and republicans including senator cory booker and senator lindsey graham, taking to the witness stand to talk about their friend, bob menendez. the defense rested today. laura jones was at the courthouse. >> the defense has rested in the bribery trial of senator bob menendez. that after a judge denied the motion for a mistrial on the grounds that they did not get a fair chance to defend their clients. bob menendez is not going to take the stand in his defense. prosecutors say that menendez wants to help a codefendant in

the medicare dispute. the defense said that that is not the case and he was holding a longtime friend. it is clearly on a larger health care policy issue. and after quarter he did speak to reporters and he seemed upbeat. >> after eight weeks, 50 witnesses, hundreds of documents, i believe with my lawyers that this jury is ready to render a verdict and i am confident. >> closing arguments are set for wednesday and this could go friday into the end of the week. >> let's bring in our panel of experts to break this down. mike, it is so good to have you here. always good to see you. >> thank you. >> was anyone surprised that the judge came out and flat out
3:03 am
denied their request for a mistrial? >> that point may become a moot point. so why take it out but the jury's function to decide it? >> has the defense set the stage for an appeal? >> yes, they set the stage for an appeal everyday of the trial. these are mandatory motions that you have to make. >> i think the fact that he was indicted and he was on trial, we heard all of these stories. this friend of his was convicted on medicare fraud. let's not forget that. so heading to the jury right now i think the majority of them want to see him gone.
3:04 am
>> did it hurt him? >> i think politically indebted. it i think that if new jersey voters found this compelling it would help him in the polls. >> would you have put him on the stand if you were representing him? >> i am not representing him. but i think that if you put a defense on, they would have wanted to hear his version. >> we will have to see. thank you, guys. >> in addition to dozens of nfl players. taking the rap for these players. ashley johnson has the full story. >> this weekend the houston texans players were all over

most is that these kids do not even know why they are kneeling. i just don't know why this is happening at a high school level. if you are not happy with being in america, go somewhere else. it is that simple. meanwhile the father has sparked more controversy for commenting on a facebook post captured on my central jersey.com. it features a photo of michelle and barack obama and it shows this woman saying thanks for messing up the country. back to the zoo. he has denied that he made such a comment. he says that someone hacked his facebook account. reporting for "chasing news." >> thank you. let's bring in our panel to break this down. i enjoyed by a pediatrician and youth consultant, doctor liz henry. it's always great to see jeanette, who is our resident

strategist. and i'm guessing mike that we are not on the same side of this discussion, but i want to start with you. let's start with the comments from bob talked about the inmates running the prison. clearly he was referencing a statement and a cliché that is literally one that is 150 years old. >> it is something like everything being bigger in texas, especially with racial insensitivity. >> the average over the past few years has been one every seven days. child abuse, domestic violence. >> yes, they have problems, but there are problems everywhere. it was just a horrible analogy considering the demographics are like this. >> all of a sudden is doing
3:08 am
exactly what he said. just because you are a person of color should not make you a suspect. >> i don't think that has anything to do with this. >> this is sticks and stones, break my bones, words never hurt me. >> for the owner, for that to be the first thing that crosses his lips to make that kind of analogy, that is inconceivable to me. >> as a pediatrician, is it bad that this is not spreading to the high schools? >> the kids are protesting police brutality, racial injustice, they are making a statement as the nfl players are and everyone else is making a statement. >> but i don't know what they are protesting. many thought it was disrespectful, but really it was the kids who just want to play football. >> voters in new jersey in seven days going to the polls to elect

their new governor. one of the candidates trying to make history as the second female to ever be elected to hold this office. there is a new poll out today with creative advertising. diana black has a new story. >> phil murphy continues to hold a double-digit lead in the polls. [cheers] [applause] >> cedars came out to hear him speak for the election on monday. >> i think that he has the smarts to run the state very well. >> i thought it was great. i love him and i'm going to vote for him. i really am. because he said everything positive that i want to hear. >> the latest poll by suffolk university shows him within a 16-point lead over kim guadango.
3:10 am
he will be ready to go, he says. kim guadango would be the first female in the position. >> she is struggling. one of them is the overall reason that we and that there is a gender gap, which is economic issues. we know that women are more economically vulnerable. they make less money than us, they have less money saved for retirement. they see themselves as not right now, but in the future, meeting that social safety net that the democratic party is more likely to report. >> she has priestley criticized the methodology of these polls. >> income taxes, business taxes, property taxes. >> it is a ton of money.

>> she also has another plan up her sleeve. a bus tour to 21 counties, she plans to go straight through to election day on tuesday. reporting for chasing, "chasing news." >> thank you. okay, over to you jeanette. it is about money to some people. >> i agree, if you just say that women are going to vote for other women, that is kind of insulting. women want to know about economic issues as well. it is every single poll private and public. and i think the message of kim guadango is really what is going to get more and more people to support her. >> you agree with that?
3:12 am
are you talking about liberal women? >> no, i don't think that at all. i think the reason why they are supporting her is they are supporting the issues and they are not is going to vote for her because she's a woman. also kim is associated with chris christie, she has been with chris christie during his round. women also want to distance themselves from her as well. >> given all of the star power that though though murphy has ht the big bang. >> i think as it gets closer to game time, people really start honing down and they really start looking at the issues. >> though murphy recently revealed his plans to tax new jerseyans.

3:17 am
they are dressing up because they admire the person, and i think that that is great. >> are we doing a real disservice to young kids? they act like they should be concerned and worried about this. >> i think that they are doing them a disservice. i mean, if they want to dress up, it is a role model for them. if they are not polynesian, if they see her as a role model. >> it is political stuff run amok. and i have watched both of these movies with my children. both of these lead female characters are amazing and strong women characters and we should be encouraging our little girls to dress up like this. and so i think it's so ridiculous. >> i think i can't believe that we are talking about a. [laughter]
3:18 am
>> there is nothing more beautiful than the innocence of a child and it's horrible when adults are going to keep doing this, making kids nervous wrecks. we should be able to talk, make mistakes, have an exchange of ideas. it's okay to make mistakes. it is okay to emulate other cultures and to be open to the world. >> you think it's our fault because we apply political correctness to so many other things in the world 2. >> i think the difference is they are using this wrong. to culturally appropriate something you are taking something for someone's culture, making it your own without giving them credit. so if i am wearing a native american headdress to a music festival, to me that is not dressing up in an inappropriate way. >> i thought it was about the
