3:03 am
bill was $9,000. and you pay $2,000 of that in advance or $3,000. it is going to benefit you because you are able to deduct that this year. bill: all right. i pleasure to talk to you. thank you. merry christmas. join the weekend. >> merry christmas. bill: ok. let's bring in ashley johnson who has reaction from incoming governor bill murphy. ashley, what do you got for us? >> new jersey governor-elect murphy has been vocal all week about the thought on those overall gop tax plan which passed wednesday. murphy announced the cabinet appointment long-time federal environmental protection agency administrator cath ridge as the next mission of the new jersey department of environmentle protection he said he plans to be creative and making sure the bill doesn't take a drastic fold on new jersey a high tax state. >> we got to have egg on the table. we're being adaulted by washington and the tax bill. so if we cannot sit on our hands.
3:04 am
we cannot sit by report. >> democrats have rallied against the bill which mortgaged individuals and some financial analysts have said, well, they are more beneficial for the rich and big businesses. new jersey state senator posted a tweet saying will be sponsoring a full property taxes for income tax. this legislature session. >> murphy's response, i would like to think we can have a review of this. but we're not going to stand back and stand idol. we're being assaulted. we will, we intend to, we will sy assert ourselves. mur ny has set the all-time record for cabinet nominations with seven so far including six women and while he said he is not done, there will not be any more before the christmas weekend. in long branch, new jersey, i am ashley johnson, reporting for chasing news. >> thanks, ashley. ok. i want to bring in senator who
3:05 am
has idea that some are saying long-time incumbent but able to find common ground with governor christie. another, welcome back to chasing news system of how are you. >> hey, merry christmas. happy nu year to everyone. am glad to be back again to announce that we'll do our best in support of it as well. to allow new jersey residents to deduct all of their property tax. bill: let me just say. before we get to details of that t. that is some find hat you are wearing. >> thank you. it is blue. the tax paid in america. bill: nicely done. well, as you know. the tax cuts coming to corporation. we have a lot more things made in america over the next four years. let me ask you, seriously. the objection that you seem to be getting and looks like the income governor has concern that it is going to be, it going to cost about $170 million toll that first budget he is going to have. what do you say to that? >> well, first of all, we can close corporate tax loopholes
3:06 am
that 40 other states have already closed and legislation planning to do that two yers now. well, maybe it will give the im us to do that. also we could save $150 million, autosly. there is still many areas we cosave money. he we should give the homeowners property tax relief. >> let me just ask you. would that impact the new governor coming in. as i understand. he pays $200,000 a year in real estate taxes and under your bill. would he be able to doe duct all $200,000 against the state taxes. >> well, he will. he will. he will. he will. well, there are millions new jersey taxpayers who pay more than $1,000. >> ok. senator, always god take to you. thank you. merry christmas. we'll have you on the radio very soon. >> the a plus panel to brack this down. i am joined by lawyer who is a lawyer for law and crime. welcome. god you have.
3:07 am
i am joined by missy who is an attorney. god he sue. thank you for the christmas gift. the orn. >> i hope you jone i it. bill: thank you very much. the executive director of faith in new jersey. good to see you. we'll start with you on this. well, i, i think it is unfortunate that it took something so mon umal the water shed tax bill, the change of tax code finally after 30 years to get new jersey to finally tax and say, hey, maybe the taxes too high. we should do something about it. so i think right now. what is hap peg in new jersey. people have xane 278 this e people are nervous. they are trying to pay taxes in advance. more importantly, you have a governorring now trying to fix the solution. where with as he when the tax bill was happening. he didn't lop pi. he didn't speck out. you cannot be mad about the gas tax and not be mad about this tax. bill: well, let me ask. you know, open, even the booking institute. left leaning. look. 90% of the people in america are going to see a tax cut. that is simple.
3:08 am
the math doesn't lie. now people are running to say maybe i got to prepay the tax. it seems to me they should wait, slowdown, see what is going to map pen. talk to their accountnt. more importantly. people have $10-$20-$3 thousand laying around? >> i am sure not everybody. everybody should wait, slow down. see how the tax bill affects them personally because it will not affect everequally. will say that. as wonderful as it soups to have new jersey cover what the federal government should be doing with respect to state and local tax it makes me uncome forrable to see a state burying the burden of something that is a problem that the federal government caught and think that makes me very nervous. bill: lucy, i say thankfully this congress acted in a way, it is about time we stop having every other state subsidize and to a large point. we cannot seem to get out of our o own way. we have $35 billion budget now. we had to start somewhere. >> yes, but still.
3:09 am
there is also the issues that people personally going to be affected by at the state level. new jersey, new jersey, new york, california am these individuals are trying to make money. right. maybe safety. i don't think and one is going to disagree. all right. now, we have to go to tax plan calculator.com. all right. our friends put this up. and it is, it will plug in the income and the homeowner. we'll tell you. >> we'll see. all right. we'll see. all right. excellent. >> the long serving chaps lor of the new york city public school system is stepping down at the age of 7 and after mayor deplace yo dragged her out of retirement to take on the job. accredited with bringing in free prepay for all. john has the full story. what do you got for us? >> you are right. she is retiring now for a second time. she was wildly expected to only serve four years as cans lor she took office and she is, she is a really homegrown story. she started in brooklyn a grown

to be a prens pal. then super in dent. the deputy chancellor in a nonessed the resignation earlier today in a letter to the city's 1.1 schoolchildren and the gleam. s what he the leg? i well, a slight increase in graduation rate be a test scores as you mentioned. she spearheaded for all of course pre-k for four-year-olds if you have a child who is eligible. you love the program and if you don't, if you consider this there is a waste of the tax dollars. many didded a ath least. she was expect, though. to carry out the full term, while de blasio served out the second term. did something hap mean well, i spoke with over the year, she was set out to change course from the bloomberg years but it was always, it was expected she would serve four years. this didn't come much touch. >> all right. thank. >> boy i tell you. her legaciesing to be other pollses across the country crying out for free daycare for all. tax payer's expense. >> did you just call the universal day care?
3:11 am
>> pretty much. yeah. no. i had two kids that went through public preschool and in the state of new jersey and i found their time there could not have been more valuable. the educational value was important. bill: who paid for. the state paid for it. bill: therein lies the problem. >> i don't know. that is what we have tax money for. if it is not for education then taking care of the next generation then why even have this money. >> charter schools low the tax. thank you, john. >> we have got a lot more chasing news coming up for you tonight including the story of parents in long island suing after their 16-year-old son was killed when a log fell on the head after a few football players were car aringrying it ton the field as part of the exercise routine. wait until youer that? >> dan zarrow is going to have the weather. is the first dave winter. so it he is officially here. could we have a white christmas? stay tuned.
3:12 am
3:13 am
3:14 am
bill: welcome back to "chasing news." am bill spadea. coming up we have the story about the allegations of rape and sexual assault in hoboken at the high school. four teens facing charges but first we'll check win the sports reporter who has the story of 16-year-old who was killed when a log fell on his head during a high school football game. his parents are seeing that school for $15 million.
3:15 am
george, a do you got? >> tragedy last summer is now heading to the courts. josh was 16-year-old player at summer drills when a 400-pound log fell and struck him on the head during the exercise meant to replicate training done by u.s. navy s.e.a.l.s. and his family is suing the school district for $15 million citing them in gence. josh and four other layers were carrying the 400-pound log when it fell and struck him on the head. now, i reached out to several high school football coaches in new jersey today. none,ed to go on the record regarding this case one veteran coach did tell me it is not uncommon to find new ways. and do different training messages and he has never seen this drill does on any high school football campus in my 20 years of discovering high school football i have never seen it done. well see it on military basises with the u.s. navy fields are trained. aam george for "chasing news." bill, let's get it back to you.
3:16 am
>> thanks, george. 1:00. >> well, let's bring the a plus panel to break this down. am joined by and dwane and laura and we'll start with lawyer. ok. 00 pounds. five high school football layers. there are kids who can dead late much weight individually. do they have a place to yeah. this is textbook negligence. this is the kind of situation. i understand your point. maybe they could lift this much weight. that is not the way it works. it is careless. abc arely to have five teenager be lifting something so heavy it would kill somebody if they mishandled. teenagers mishandling anything they are doing is something expected. this was an accident waiting to hap happen. these kids should be wrapped in bubble wrap, shouldn't be playing football. >> ok. >> one thing we have to realize. this now it is the u.s. marines. whether it ricality is these are young men.
3:17 am
we have to also understand that one of the greatest football players walker never stepped in the gym. was doing the work at the home. i think as a ego of the coach and i think the school needs to be held accountable. >> well, $1 a 5 million. you cannot replace someone's life with any amount of money but the number itself is feels like a completely disproportion pate considering it was accident not look they tried to hurt the kids. but billwell those are damages for ac didn't a negligent case? you have to see there was risk that somebody would be injured. the fact that this kid dies $15 million is actually not utandous opening demand. that is what it is that's the number you put in the complaint but may not be the number you reach. the testimonies are compensatory they are pain and suffering for wrongful death and a lot of. there is obviously a lot of damage here. at what point have we gone from accidents happen when you are trying. i mean, kids have to be tough to play football. >> no way. no way. no way.
3:18 am
where it noon the law. if somebody is asking someone to do something unusual that outside of this normal inherent risks of the sport they are playing then yes they there is going be liability. >> yeah. yeah. >> ok. there is no logs in football. >> all right. >> like lawyers. >> yeah. >> you talked about yo you are daughter. what if something happened to her like to? how would you feel? $15 million too. bill: beyond where who feel or not. my son is 14 and plays high school football. i have talked and again on this show, on this the radio says they got to tough in the kids up. one of the reasonnest this are getting hurt is not are not ready. now, this is a navy s.e.a.l. training. ok. i get this. onestly, a lot of 16-year-old boys who can lift a lot more weight than that. this is an accident president? it is unfortunate. that is part of the reason people hate lawyers. four teenager facing sexual assault charges inness dent that they allegedly raped a teenager gr at hoboken high school.
3:19 am
mark has the full story. mark, a do you got for us? reporter: allegedly assault here at hoboken high school and there has been one person charged with 18 years of age and everybody else is a minor and there fore, has not been named. good win has been charged not as his lawyer has said with the direct sexual assault but did allegedly video tap the assault on the smartphone. >> you tracked down the victim's family, and you talked to her aunt. >> i did. >> what did she say to you? >> the aunt who is the sister of the mother of the alend victim. the family is in shock. there are some serious concerns that the family has about the safety and security overall inside of the school. there are cameras in side of the school local authorities went and took a look and say we see out, we see this attack again. however, the families saying wait. the cameras in place. why was nobody watching the cameras during the school day when somebody could have seen alleged assault take place be a potentially done something about
3:20 am
it. >> mark. real quick. did youk to the schools and the hoboken high school officials. are they saying anything i have called the principal's office and the super tint dent's office for the hoboken school district as of yet no reply. no comment. >> thank. >> thanks very much. >> all right. let's bring back the panel and laura is here. and dwan end and ok. we'll start with you. well, so you have got surveillance footage showing the boys pushing it and a young girl into the bathroom. then, then from there. what happened? it seems like there is not a lot of doubt as to whether some form took place. >> well, it certains like this was assaulted and which is obviously a problem on to itself and then we have sort of ancillary problem that there is onlookers then we have one guy videotaping and sending it out which which which is really compounding the crime. you know, i am gratified to see that the prosecutors are taking this very seriously. it sounds like everyone is being
3:21 am
charged with the maximum count they could be in the situation. but this is really disturbing. and we have to look at as a society, now, we had last sum mr we had the brock turner daysp pend. people were outraged. how could something like this happen. this is how something like this happens. >> ok. let me ask you. the head of the group called faith in new jersey. i mean, how far have we evolved as a society that you what kind of degenerate takes a video and sends it out to something like this? >> one things we have tound stand almost 200 case like this happens every year. and in college, 20% of the women who face the situations every year. and the point is saying, you took that fig future. he that i figures overblown but that is another story. i think it is because a wide range. >> a wide range of what you define from bad jokes to assault. thats the part of the problem. this is bad. this is bad. >> but reality is, we need to do a better job at teaching the boys how to treat women and that sexual assault unacceptable. our mothers and fathers needed
3:22 am
to do a better be job. our school needs to do a better job. >> we have to be hurt on the criminals throughout. i hear they talk about how much soft are we need to be. how too many people in prisons. maybe we don't have enough people in prisons in. that is issue with the criminal justice system. right. it has effect. you might see the other co-conspirators in the crime. the prosecutors seeking to charge them as adult and deter others friend gaging in this time of conduct. certainly this is egerge greggous crime. we have video. the video was take and distributed is also evidenced to the underlying crime so when the slid yo is there. i mean, you have got rights on these kinds of charges. ok. leave it there. merry christmas. ged sue. >> laura, good he sue. merry christmas, guys. see you soon. all right. let's check in with meteorologist dan zarrow the weather. meteorologist: happy winter. thursday was the shortest day of the year. there is good intos here. a few minutes of daylight every
