bill: deadliest fire in 27 years in new york city claimed 12 people's lives. >> screaming. that is how we knew. people were screaming. fire, help. we knew. >> we have team chaser coverage. we'll break it down tonight. and freezing cold weather. how long is this going to last? and the year in hollywood, breakups, scandals and mishaps. we have the whole year in preview today. i am bill spadea, this is "chasing news." the deadliest fire in 27 years in new york city has bronx families looking for shelter and recovering from the loss of loved up withs. a terrible, terrible, terrible
3:01 am
tragedy. i want to start with ashley johnson. ashley, what do you got for us? >> what caused the deadliest fire in new york city's history in more than 25 years. heartbreaking. >> do you think this is such a tragedy. how could it happen so close to new year's? it breaks your heart. then, those poor kids died. >> the racing fire in the bronx apartment complex near 180th and prospect avenue took the lives of four men, four women, four children as young as one years old. friday, investigators say the fire started from a three-year-old boy the snow. official say the boy alerted his mom with both of her children and made the fatal mistake of keeping the door open. a man who lives in the building describes frantly getting the children out one by one. >> they put their lives, you know?
3:02 am
one after the other. the fire in the bottom floor and quickly escalated to the top telling people on all four floors. >> we were told the boy had a history of playing with the burners and turning them on, then, before, before the mother knew it, this fire had gotten a good hold in the kitchen and said a lot of fire, a lot of smoke, grabbed the children and ran out. >> good samaritans doing everything they can to hp the families displaced by the fire. >> we gave toothpaste, coats, school supply, bock bags, curtains, sheets, blab kets. reporter: in the been ex, i am ashley johnson reporting for "chasing news." >> thank you, ashley. ok. i won't bring in someone who is absolute expert on the issues of fires especially in new york city. he is retired deputy chief of the fdny and he is currently president of a fire safety consulting group.
3:03 am
his name is james. jame, what went wrong? this started in one apartment and quickly spread to the entire building. what happened? what went wrong? could it have been prevented? well, the fire spread to the rest of the building and probably from the front door which we are hearing now than the front door was left open. when you evacuate a fire, the front door, you should close the front door, don't lock it, close it. now it will contan the fire far little while and it got into the stair which and went racing up the stair which and affected the patches on all floors. ok. jame, thank you. appreciate join meg tonight. >> ok, thank you. >> one of the other shores that had to be dealt win spite of the fire when they firefighters arrived in freezing cold temperatures. just unbelievable weather night. he want to bring in meteorologist dan zarrow tell us how the weather impacted the biz and the fight to stop it. dan? dan. we know the combination things
3:04 am
extreme cold, strong winds never a good one. you add on top of that, that the fact that firefighters are spreading water all over this place. it turns to ice. mate made a bad situation even worse. at the time of the blaze, the air tem dure was about 15 degrees regular wind gusts to about 20 miles per hour. you put that in the windchill calculator and felt like minus 2. definitely dangerous cold territory from frostbite can settle in in 15 minutes so a bad situation for the victims and the evacuees. a bad situation for the firefighters as well. its so hard to do that job and extreme cold and extreme heat. we got more arctic blast on those way for the next week, at least, we will talk about that part of the forecast little later on. bill. >> thank you, dan. >> ok. let'sng bring in our a mrs. panel to talk about this. just a terrible terrible tragedy on the heels of a holiday weekend. lauren craig joins me again. lauren, are the the ambassador f newark.
3:05 am
thank sops. >> thank you. ju to have one attorney. you need one in the room at all times. our ticks director of face in new jersey. so, guys, just an awful, awful night, horrific range dy. from the perspective, you think about just general fire safety. aim listening to the former deputy chief. i don't know those rules. i don't know. do you? >> you bring up a good point. think all of us have to do a bter job preparing ourself for the worst case scenarios. i am mainly thinking about my own family member and own chondrois going and we went over the steps of worse case scenarios. what do we actually done this protocols we do. think we need do a better job in the season. >> yeah. throws really important. the question is, do people actually read them? what is interesting in new york city, if you work in a corporate high-rise building in a commercial space.
3:06 am
the fire safety expert has to cone and tell you. the same rules don't apply to residence but maybe there is something to that when you have the million ty families and high-rise apartment complex. maybe more is needed. >> well, that is simple. that is brings up a good point. maybe they should have fire drills. schools have fire tril drills. was thinking on the news of this happening last night. it broke last night. do you have a plan. do kids blow to go. what to do. we had house fire. >> that is a great idea to have a fire drill for a building, but also, i think as a family. should have a family plan. what are we going to do. who is going to grab the dog. what door are we going to go out of and take responsibility for that. it is a tragic time to have something like to happen. >> it is a sad time. >> all right. thanks. >> 2018 is upon us. and there is a new tax plan coming out of washington. it is got a lot of people worried because the deduction you can take for the real estate taxes is $10,000.
3:07 am
not so bad for the country but knox, new jersey, it is issue. so much so that some people are rushing to get to pay their 2018 real estate taxes before the year ends on the 31st. i want to bring the a plus panel to break it down. all right. guys. are you seeing this? to be honest? we talked on the road this morning. didn't have anyone calling. they were going to prepay the taxes. >> i said it before. i will say it again. this is a terrible bill for working class families. if you notice ho complaints from any corporationors wealthy. this tax plan works for them. what you see right now. everybody is running around. trying to fix it because it is never worked for us. bill: all right. aside from that being untrue. i want to ask you, you know, the middle class, and you lack at the numbers about how many people are going to benefit the average tax bill is less than 10 one new jersey congressman is saying we'll push back.
3:08 am
the irs says you doon this if you have been billed already. nope. we got to make it a cross the board. buzz again, i don't see how it benefits people to prepay the tax. >> well, think it does benefit people. but you have to have that lum sum of $10,000 to be able to pay. a lot of people don't have that. if it feels to me, that new jersey, as blue state is being targeted. we are already one of the states that pay the most into the federal government in tacks now this is just adding insult. here go. all right. we'll try it again. two strikes. let the ask you. you know, tax bill that doubles the standard deduction. a tax bill that reduces the rate for most filers. you are talking about something according to the more liberalists out there. they are saying, yeah. 90-95% are going to pay less or the same. that is a good deal. well, i think one thing that is going to be true is you are not going to be able to see everyone with any tax bill. so you are going to have people benefited negatively or people
3:09 am
benefited and people there is a negativism pact. then, in new york. i think, you are seeing this coming to fruition saying i will sue the federal government. i will say this violates due process and equal protection baits is negative for new york and new jersey. well, at this point, back to your point. well shall this is politics? the governor. the members of congress is not going to go anywhere. i l passed. it is going to city and how will pay taxes. come february people will start to see a higher paycheck because the, the withholding tax structures is going to change. does it both per you we are having this conversation now instead of before? well, too late now. i think you bring up agood point. >> a lot of people are fearful of the future elections right now, you can see what is happening is, but remember this american people are not stupid. we see a reputation. we know you are fighting force or not. we're going to hold people accountable. bill: i agree with you. we'll sweez happens. all right. got to leave it there, guys. thank you. stick around.
3:10 am
we got a lot more show for you tonight on "chasing news." how about the weather? it is so cold. and it looks like the cold is going to be with us. stay with me. bill: we got a bunch of wimps in our society. you got to be tough. potentially you can be harmful. something bad could happen. >> my hair is not my wardrobe. this is what i was born with. u got hit it from all sides. >> that is your opinion. we got your point of view covered. it is a big deal for some. >> "chasing news" with bill
