>> as new jersey and new york recover from the blizzard of 2018 we are not out of danger yet. frigid cold and temperatures are dropping. in some cases record lows. more than 10 new jersey transit trains canceled on friday. due to thefrozen switches. and several ferry lines shut down because of ice on the waterways. and a police officer lost his jersey turnpike on friday. as he got out to help a motorist that had been stranded. a young girl lost her life in an apartment that did not have proper ventilation for the heat. that and check out this video, to rival cheerleader groups fighting it out. wait and see see what they did to each othand where, we
3:01 am
will get to this all tonight on "chasing news". i am bill spadea, this is "chasing news". we have a "chasing news" weather alert tonight. it is cold in here, how long will this last? we have coverage of the unbelievable weather that we have been experiencing the past couple of days. and what his insight. we will start with our meteorologist dan, what is going on? >> dan: new york central only reached 17 degrees. the coldest day since valentine's day 2016. almost 2 years ago! looks like it will get even colder into the weekend. i often refer to the windchill factor as the feels-like temperature. but actually goes beyond that. it has to do with how quickly
3:02 am
the body loses heat. and when the windchill is below zero, it is absolutely dangerous cold, frostbite and hypothermia become a real concern. as a bundle of this weekend, i mean it! coat, hat and gloves at the lease. will have numbers and details for you a littr. >> bilyou. it is important to keep i that in weather like this is not just about the cold weather. it is about the dangers and potential for people to die. one young girls life has already been claimed a result of the extreme temperatures and lacking of proper ventilation. and friday morning on the new jersey turnpike, lieutenant christopher from the jersey police department. an officer that served with distinctiyears, was killed as he exited his hicle to help a stranded motorist. of course our thoughts and prayers are with the jersey city police department and the officers family. be mindful when you see someone pulled over on the road.
3:03 am
get as far left as you can. it is dangerous to be on the road and is whether. we have the full story about others struggling to this extreme weather. >> a 13 year old girl is dead and three others are in critical condition af exposed to carbon monoxide poisoning and and amboy apt building. were 35 ot vict ven of which were officers. michael watts who owns this three-story building located on fayette street spoke to reporter >> they tested everything. going to the roof it wa ked. we do not know if it was her-related. we don't know. still investigating. >> friday evening officials claimed that clay liner obstructed the flow of carbon monoxide exhaust from the building. they indicated the carbon monoxide and oke detectors were y functioning in december. however they were not operational at the time of the incident. they call the situation devastating but preventable. he says he's owned the building
3:04 am
for approximately 13 years. the mayor also relays a statement. our hearts go out to all of those affected. we asked the community to keep everyone involvein a pray for recovery. nts are currently staying in hotels but expected to tthe building next week. "chasing news". >> bill: thank you allison! lek back in with our reporter john with a couple difficulties of his own with a pipe ting. what is the update? >> reporter: an effort to save on my fuel bill i ended up paying a another bill bill. this is mocking me. i shut the heat off the master bedroom because i was not going to be there. the pipes froze. when it thought out, water came into the closet. lessons learned that i will share with you. leave your heat on. at least 55 degrees. if you leave the house or are in an area, that you may not be
3:05 am
and make sure that you have insulation. there was no sleeve on this particular pipe that froze. there was a mistake. also make sure the attic has enough insulation. when it is single digits and really cold, that water trickled through the faucets. if it is moving it is less likely to freeze. also open up cabinet doors to the center. let the natural air get in there and make sure it circulates to keep the pipes warm. in a final note as the plumber was leaving. i said with a smile, i hope to never see you again. and he said with a oh, you will! more lessons coming i think. that is the story from my addict. >> bill: incoming new jersey governor elect, bill murphy had a press conference on friday. he took the time to go after the trump administration again. not only on taxes but that there could be at some point drilling off of the jersey coast. it is interesting to watch how this new administration is
3:06 am
coming in and how it will impact you directly. ashley johnson caught up with the governor elect today. what do you have? >> reporter: phil murphy brought on a full attack against the trump administration at conferences on friday. >> what the president announced yesterday is nothing less then dropping a ticking time bomb off of the coast. >> reporter: in longbridge where he was joined by a us senator menendez, asked him about the book, "fire and fury" inside the trump white house. >> your thoughts on the book and is he crazy? is there a bandit in the white house? [laughter] >> he has more questions on this topic. >> reporter: the focus of the first event was drilling off of the jersey shore. as it would hurt by livelihood of so many that enjoy the short.
3:07 am
they worry about a potential oil spill. >> what kind of proposals come out the friday before new year's? the kind that you do not want people to see. but i have bad news for the trump administration. we see you. we know what you're doing and were not going to stand for it. we have been through this before. and we have won. >> reporter: murphy was joined by another talking about the tax overhaul bill. >> not only as a deficit likely to go into the trillions as the congressman mentioned today. but the former -- the ultimate hypocrites parked their deficit concerns on the shelf while they jammed this bill through. >> reporter: another note, he said the marijuana policy will hold him back from his promise
3:08 am
from legalizing recreational marijuana in the garden state. ashley johnson reported for "chasing news". >> bill: thank you ashley! let's bring back our a+ panel. great to see you guys! let's start. that seems to me that the governor elect bill murphy, cannot give any presentation without taking a shot at the president. then the fact that he laughed when asked about the book. i think he is already past being governor in thinking about 20/20. >> i think he is responding to this and everything else that the president is doing, the laughing at the book, like we discussed, it is something that is entertainment. i do not think it is of importance to him. with what is coming up i think the lack was appropriate. >> bill: what do you think? you think about states that have been so successful with offshore drilling. just to speak to that point. i do not have pollution problems, but they have incredible revenue. he talked about you go all the way south of louisiana, incredible revenue. what a way to offset the taxes?
3:09 am
>> we're going backwards pretty soon we will open a call monday new jersey lternative n enl doesn'ti you're y rate, in the teens and 20sdoesn't work it across taxpayer money only once in the state. look at the debacle -- >> is that the shocker that we still talking offshore lling and coal? they ey all of these people. it is have this? vestment like you said, it has not been made into clean energy to see the potential. cause it is e loser in private sector will not touch it. go anyw. we have moshow for you tonight. ice, wind, frigid temperatures! we are not out of e woods rd teorologist will stay
3:10 am
3:11 am
3:12 am
>> let's talk about new jersey transit! we know new jersey transit doesn't seem to be able to get out of their own way but a new administration is coming in in just a little over one week. how will the governor elect, bill murphy, called the agency a national disgrace, how will he deal with fixing it? in news today, steve santoro, the guy that was in charge of new jersey transit says the hoboken development is out. gave his resignation possibly in anticipation of being fired with the new administration. i want to bring in somebody that probably should be back at new jersey transit. his name is todd beretta. he was a senior compliance officer until he was fired.
3:13 am
he is joining me now. welcome to "chasing news". >> thank you for having me go. >> bill: qualify who you are and what your back story is. you are hired as a compliance officer at new jersey transit. >> chief compliance officer. >> bill: you are the guy that was supposed to look for what was going right and wrong. >> was a newly created position. it was ushered in with great fanfare by mr. santoro back when they had the initial legislative hearings in 2016. >> bill: they went after for all kinds of things saying you were misusing the car computers and everything else. but you contended a lot of this was exposed over the incompetence. quite honestly in this area everyone knows. >> i been exposing them the first week. i have memos documented as far back as my first two weeks on the job. >> bill: forgetting why you were fired and all of that, let's talk about what is wrong with new jersey transit? everything! predominantly a lack of proper capital investment and gross mismanagement.
3:14 am
>> bill: specifically what you do to fix this?what if you get pulled back in and they said he should never have been fired in the first place. they knew it ministration coming in. we need someone who's not afraid to blow the whistle and call out where we are wrong. what is the first thing you would do to fix it? >> the first thing i would do is reorganize and increase employee morale. it is absolutely in the garbage. no one is properly rewarded. no one is properly incentivized. the end result is just to continue the status quo. >> bill: the governor has defended this. but you have the new governor coming in saying this is a disgrace. as the truth and help her is a disgrace? >> is truly a disgrace. i think it was very well put. i hope that this is a good turning point actually to turn around back to what it was. >> bill: you not a very good government bureaucrat. you are supposed to go along with it and not say anything! what prompted you to risk your job and your financial security to blow the whistle?
3:15 am
>> abstract to make a better railroad and a better system for all the commuters in new jersey. you are certainly meant i was not a good bureaucrat. i was totally told to play the game and i didn't play. look what happened to me. >> bill: i think you should be on the list for new jersey heroes coming up. thank you for what you are doing. keep us posted and let me know if you get a call from the new guys coming in. >> thank you! >> bill: i want to check and also knows the commute. she has been doing it for a long time and has been an advocate for changing new jersey transit. we want you to meet diane doctor, the new station manager for my nine in secaucus new jersey. welcome back to the show. how are you? hi >> e you doing>>? bill: with phil murphy in. he says during the campaign, if you got elected new jersey transit is a national disgrace. they have governor christie coming and as he leaves, depending new jersey transit. we just heard from todd beretta, who was the chief compliance ofly a few months being fire pointing out obvings every e.
3:16 am
what dyou say and what can be done? >> i think lot iresting in the back of his new dot director. the governor elect murphy appointed just a few ks ago. diane -- the foreman new jersey turnpike executive director and just recently, the former director of the florida turnpike.on the surface, she appears to be a bureaucrat. which is not a good thing for new jersey transit because it is a bureaucrat as you know, that have run new jersey transit into the national disgrace that it has become. she is the nominee and we have to have faith that she has the instinct to bring someone in who may be the opposite of her. because we know that that is what good leaders do. >> you have quite honestly, the republican project is at work on across the globe. why can't they get this right? >> they need a strong leader, someone with a vision.
3:17 am
someone that is not from the transportation sector per se. but possibly someone from the private sector. someone that can have a vision for the future. and that understands the importance of mass transit. and it is a balance for diane, the new dot commissioner. someone who really can take this thing by the hands and run with it. >> bill: okay, i hope it is not too long before you figure out what they can do to make changes. i am with you! thank you diane. we have talked to about violence on high school campuses across the new york and new jersey area. check out this video. this is a video of two rival cheerleading squad and a couple of girls seriously hurt. [video] >> bill: wthe attorney of the two young la that were hurt in this. this happened at a brooklyn high school. this is marcel, he represents the two girls in the o that you see. welcome to "chasing news". how are you?
3:18 am
>> how are i am good thank you. >> bill: this is incredibly violent. the fact that this happened at a high school. you are talking effectively about kids. what we through the video first.>> this is the brutal gang style attack on two ninth graders lyn high sc that happened to house erent schools and that one building. understand kids will be they may fight sometimes. but you are seeing just a lack of security. of she part of the department of education. these kids are pretty much left to fend for themselves. when the security personnel do manage to how quickly these kids disperse. >> bill: what is the lawsuit about? were you trying to hold table? out money? >> this has nothing to do with it has to do with the gross dereliction of the department of education. there is no supervision whatsoever that school. the school has six separate schools! no supervisno security. these kids are pretty much left to fend for themselves.
3:19 am
basically fight over each other without any sort of parental or administrative supervision. >> bill: thank you for joining me tonight. appreciate it.let's bring back our a+ panel. bob i want to start with you. i think there is a lot of credibility to the discussion of a lack of security. a school that has a history of violence. but we have seen this time and again. we have seen videos up and down new jersey, new york. it seems to be out con we had astabbed another kid to death in a high school last year. where does this end and how to resolve it? >> i dealt with this as a prosecutor for years. why the schools need to maintain a safe environment and it is the law, because the children are required to be at the school, a lot of school officials and police cannot do the job with all due respect, that parents shoud be doing. not every happens means the school is necessarily unsafe or unsecure. i just wish that when i was doing it we would have people, whether it was bullying or whatever no one would come
3:20 am
until this was a disaster. >> bill: i mean there were always schools when i was growing up but i don't remember it being as violent as it is ust know abt it more. >> i think there is an element of both. we keep individuals inundating us. i think the schools are taking custody of the children to take responsibility as well. >> another problem you have though is when you have a heavy police presence then you get attackedit a zone. >> bill: how many folet in trouble yo are sitant, do iget involved? am i assaulting a kid? that has happened as well. you have to leave it there. thank you. bob i understand congratulations. you have a new dog! >> yes holly. she is a rescue pet from alabama. 5 o'clock today! >> bill: congratulations! let's check in with her meteorologist with the weather. >> dan: i'm inviting people on soci media all day when talking about the dan it has been
