3:01 am
many months after. >> i was embarrassed to talk about it. i'm still coming to terms with it. i was dealing with it emotionally and psychologically. >> i best media. this is chasing news. >> it's flu season. the cdc is saying that we have an epidemic on her hands. we have an epidemic every year, just a question of when it hits. this seasons strain of flu is harsh. there have been many stories of people who have died that are outside the vulnerable areas, not the very young or very old. it has many people talking in some people at a level of fear and panic saying what to i do? the new sources are out there same it is still time to get your flu shot. i have questions about it because you probably heard that
3:02 am
it is not that effective this year. joining me now is doctor tina from the new jersey department of health. what do you say? people are saying, i've read this, that this particular strain is so harsh that the flu shot is only about 10% effective. >> you have to look at the full picture. the seasonal flu vaccine protects you against four different strains of virus. we do have a lot of different viruses circulating. as far as what is going on in new jersey and the united states for the effectiveness, the cdc is looking at data and we will have a better sense of vaccine effectiveness for the united states in the next several wee weeks. >> it shows anywhere between 15 and 50000 people die every year from the flu. does the vaccine generally, does generally having a vaccine alter those numbers? can you see a difference over the past 20 years? >> we estimate a huge impact in terms of illnesses and deaths every year with the flu vaccine. we know that the flu vaccine
3:03 am
even if it is not 100% effective all of the time, we know it helps prevent against the severe consequences of flu illness on the whole. even if it is not 100% perfect match for the strains, when you make antibodies in response to the vaccine against one flu strain it might give you protection against other strains circulating. >> what you say to the relatively healthy person not in either of the groups. someone like me who i haven't had a flu shot in the last few years. the flu vaccine is the most effective way of preventing the flu infection. there are many other respiratory viruses circulating at this time of the year.
3:04 am
sometimes people may think the flu vaccine doesn't protect them against another respiratory illness. >> thank you. let's bring in the a+ panel. i'm joined by jeanette hoffman, political strategist and misty, an attorney. shot or no? >> no flu shot. >> my kid got a, i need to get it next. i think you jinxed yourself. they never get it or never get the flu. >> it was interesting what the dr. said. every year i have a serious illness, not hospitalization, but i get a flu like sickness. i lose my voice for a few days. in the last four or five years, at least two of them i got the flu shot and i always got sick. i think you have to take the advice of your medical professional, but i don't think people who don't take it i like the anti- vaccine crowd. >> whatever is good for you. you speak to your dr. and your dr. will you. the one year i got a flu shot, i got the flu. my own personal experience is
3:05 am
saying i don't know if i want to do that again. >> when you got the flu i did not get the flu shot. >> but my kids got it at the time and they did not get the flu from me. >> everybody gets the flu shot. we have an eight -month-old baby at home. >> you have vulnerable groups, people were very young and the elderly. for me after hearing the explanation it seems isolated like a general vaccine. like us her throat, runny nose. it's a short list in new jersey and new york are on that list. it's where amazon may put their second world headquarters. what could it mean to new york and new jersey if amazon comes here. george has the full story. >> officials are thrilled that they have made the top 20 candidates list for amazon's new

facility which could bring $5 billion in economic revitalization and as many as 50000 jobs. >> among the reasons plus high-tech colleges in the area from which amazon could attack talent. >> were smack dab in the middle of 9 million people in this area i'm please, not very surprised we had a strong proposal an application. we know that newark can use this. >> they made the top 20 for more than 200 cities who wanted the headquarters. among the competition new york city philadelphia boston. if you need a new jersey hook they went to the university at

bridgeton. >> thank you. let's bring back the a+ panel. is there any chance that amazon is coming to new jersey? >> i think it would be an economic boom. think about the number of jobs that the headquarters we create. there's many different issues that play. i'm sure amazon is taking a look at new york city and philadelphia why would they come to amazon when it's on the verge of passing a 15-dollar minimum wage? >> that's a trend that's going on in a lot of states that the minimum wage is going up. it's an economic reality. amazon is one of the companies who may be able to accommodate that. smaller businesses will struggle.
3:08 am
>> democrats and the legislator are pushing back. the battle line is over farmers and teenagers. some have said it's inherently racist to not apply to farmers. >> the impact of a 15-dollar minimum wage on farmers would be disastrous. it would be disastrous for small business in any business owner struggling to make ends meet. to increase the wage by 80% makes no sense. you hurt the same workers you're trying to help. >> when i heard $5 billion in tax incentives i thought how high are the taxes in new jersey that you can offer that. >> you want to keep people here. you want to promote economic growth. it's a balance. what an expensive place to do business. when you have to cough up $5 million to be competitive. >> and to say you will pass a minimum wage without looking at exemptions is ignoring

hundred bucks. it turned out to be a lost rembrandt with more than $1 million. first, i want to introduce you to someone who has a message about mystic violence. a former member of the new jersey assembly, she was a victim of domestic violence and it led to her making very important decisions about her career. there is controversy over the fact that the issue of domestic violence did not come out until after she did not seek reelection it i'm joined by former member, maria rodriguez greg. welcome. let me ask you, there was a situation that happened with a charge of dui after an incident on the road. someone rear-ended you and you said you're going to step back and take personal time. why did the situation of domestic violence that you are victim of not come out until
3:15 am
after you have the the assembly? >> i was embarrassed to talk about it. i was coming to terms with it. it was dealing with it emotionally and psychologically. is not comfortable talking about it. considering the type of how people perceive me as being a strong person, roller derby player, i was embarrassed to talk about it. >> why now? what change? >> considering i was going through a lot there is a time of reflection to in my last week in the legislator. the people i knew who may have been experiencing the same type of trauma. i had a moment and i was in a better place and to get therapy. i wanted to share my story to encourage others to mystic violence to get support and he

help. >> if someone took a look at your facebook post and the idea that you are speaking out, could be interpreted that the messages i got into this with the cops and it was a negative exchange. this past is justification? >> the purpose of the message was to let people know, i don't think people are aware of the deep psychological wounds that occur. whether it be sexual assault or physical violence. when you don't get supporter seek help, there's increased fear, anxiety, depression, ptsd, suicidal idealization and even suicide. the effects are great. for me it was to share my experience and encourage others to get help until support so they don't become a statistic. >> to regret that you had this podium and microphone, now
3:17 am
you're out and don't have the same level of connection. do you regret that decision? >> absolutely not. i do have the same level of connection. if you like i'm in a better position to advocate for others and accomplish more on behalf of others have experienced these issues. >> what are you running again? >> i'm not thinking about it anytime soon. >> just to clarify, your attacker was convicted. >> yes, he pled guilty to assault. >> thank you. mayor diblasio has a new plan to adjust homelessness in new york city. it has raised eyebrows and caused controversy. we had a statement from the department of homeless services other saying -- you can read the full statement on her facebook page. they're saying instead of a cluster -based approach which
3:18 am
was taken homeless people from all five boroughs and putting them in a central location, they're going to oberle -based system which means places like 157 which is the most expensive apartment building in new york could have a homeless shelter right down the block. some people refer to that areas billionaires world. they are not happy, they're worried about property value and other issues. it does question, will it help, and if you're homeless, you are not really from that borough. jeanette, i understand it. i think we've had a problem since diblasio has been in office. there's harmless everywhere. >> i think that this is number one policy mistake. the homeless problem has exploded under him.
3:19 am
i'm not sure this plan makes sense. if you live in 157, you're paying millions of dollars to live there. to run a homeless shelter there? >> is a better to have a shelter in the area than actual homeless people living on the steps? >> is either here or there. the idea is based on the fact that it's hard to render services to homeless people. they're taking people off the streets and helping them at the playsets nearby in the borough that they live maybe they can do more good. of course people in the community will have concerns. >> i know they have a problem it's a person or a mother, and a kid. what about the argument that the homeless shelters have allowed
3:20 am
the crime and drugs and people don't feel safe. >> that's why you don't want one in your backyard. they do have crime and drugs. you don't want your children around that. they need to be cleaned up if they're going to be put in boroughs. how can you prove some of this homeless but they belong to the upper west side. how do you know that? i'd also like to see mayor diblasio try to make new york city more affordable. the best social program is a job. >> definitely true. new york city is very expensive. maybe that's why this is happening. the difficult situation in hard to solve. buildings need to and put their security. >> i think the mayor might be onto something. it's easier to get somebody off the street and down the block then off the street and in a van to boroughs away.
3:21 am
