(bright guitar music) - welcome to teen kids news. i'm livia. let's begin with our top story for this week. (funky music) they are an incredibly popular boy band that's breaking language barriers around the world. and teen kids news got an exclusive backstage pass. - there's a new sound in town. it's called k-pop. that's short for korean pop music. and annie and i have tickets to see the k-pop boy band that's taking the music world by storm. ("outro: wings" by bts)
12:01 pm
not only did we have amazing seats, we actually got to meet the band. hi, i'm katie. - and i'm annie. - and we're the reporters. after the introductions, i got to ask them some questions. you sing mostly in korean, a language very few americans understand. so why do you think american fans love your songs so much? - i think we've always been talking about the real young people's lives. and you know, thanks to the fans everywhere even in the states, they translate all of our lyrics and interviews to their languages, like english, chinese, japanese, even italian. so thanks to them, they can understand our lyrics. ("spring day" by bts) - music is emotional, so you don't need to understand the language to understand the music. - i have to agree. you get different emotions that come from the songs,
12:02 pm
whether it's sad, it's happy. just whatever it makes you feel, that's why we all enjoy it. (singing in korean) (crowd cheering) - because we always talk about the real young people's life, like school and, you know, like the social things, i think they could resonate and feel the same thing, because i think there is something specific that we all feel for the young people in the world. - yeah, i love their energy and their communications with their, fans because they really bond with you, especially over the concerts. ("not today" by bts) - this concert was about more than just the music. bts puts on an incredible show. ("i need u" by bts) you don't just perform. don't you also help produce and choreograph your songs? - yes, we're always trying
12:03 pm
to contribute as much as possible, because i think we should know what we're talking about, right? so like we said, if we talk about young people's lives, you know, we're... we are also young people, like we're talking about. so we're always trying to contribute as much as possible. - [katie] you sing about important issues that other k-pop bands usually avoid. how did that get started? - there are, you know, quite important issues. so somebody needs to talk about if it is important, right? so if somebody needs to talk about it, we thought we should talk about it. so we're trying to speak as, you know, various as we can. like from like school and societies, and from small things to big things. we're trying to, we're still trying to do that. ("dna" by bts) - [katie] in fact, according to rolling stone magazine, bts write and produce socially-conscious k-pop.
12:04 pm
while other k-pop acts focus on songs about heartbreak and partying, bts have connected with audiences by touching on topics such as mental health, politics, and even female empowerment. - [rm] one, two, three. (crowd cheering) - what did you think of the concert? - oh, it was so amazing! - it was amazing. it was everything i dreamed of and more. - it was awesome! - it was the best one i've been to so far. it was amazing. - it was an experience of a lifetime. - yeah, i loved how they did the rainbow project, with each section having a different color. i feel like it really showed the spirit of bts. - what do you like best about bts? - probably their personalities, 'cause they're just really fun. they love their fans, so. - i love their moves. - i'd have to agree with aubrey. their personality and their interaction with fans is awesome. - they have a good personality and they have a good heart. and they have like, killer skills and stuff.
12:05 pm
and, yeah. - when they sing in korean, do you understand the lyrics? why doesn't it matter? - even if you don't really understand every word of a song, you can definitely understand the main idea of it simply by the emotion they're putting into it. ♪ fire ♪ fire (singing in korean) ♪ hello hello, hello hello ♪ tell me what you want right now ♪ - [katie] bts sure is giving these two fans what they want. their new album love yourself, her includes a collaboration with andrew taggart from chainsmokers. - at the prudential center in newark, new jersey. - for teen kids news, i'm katie. - and i'm annie. ("best of me" by bts) - when teen kids news returns, we'll have advice from an expert on dealing with anger management. we'll be right back. - [announcer] closed captioning istiingis brought to you by.
12:07 pm
- we all get angry now and then. but if you know someone who takes it too far, then he or she might have what's called anger management issues. amelia has this report. - yeah, i do know someone that's close to me that has an anger management issue. and they usually just are very on-edge and... i don't know. it's kinda hard to talk to them sometimes. - some things, little or small like, pushes them over the top easily. they may react just because like,
12:08 pm
you may not have done something, but they're just angry and they just need to lash out. - my friend's brother has an anger management problem. and he just gets angry about things that he shouldn't, like just things that aren't worth getting angry over. he would just like, burst out. - one of my friends that i know, if something small happens that most people wouldn't be bothered by, they'll just go off and start pushing people. or if someone just messes around with them, they'll get really annoyed. - i don't know really anyone with an anger management problem, but i'm happy i don't. - well, he's pretty lucky. but if you know someone who needs to chill out rather than act out, then get ready to take notes. joining us is dr. susan heitler. she's a psychologist and an author. hi. - hello there. - what are some signs that someone has anger management issues? - if you feel fearful when you're with that person, odds are they have an anger problem. you can also tell if you've seen them go into attack mode.
12:09 pm
if you feel like you're dealing with an angry dog, whoops, that's a sign. if the attack includes name-calling, a loud voice, or worse, physical attack like pushing or shoving, that's a major anger problem. - is there anything we can do as friends to help them chill? - say something. that's number one. say something about yourself. say, "you know, i feel fearful when i'm with you. "that's not normal. "and when i feel fearful, it makes me wanna leave you "and not have anything to do with you. "i think it's because i'm anticipating "you're gonna get mad again." - what shouldn't we do? - what shouldn't you do? uh, that's an interesting question. ignore it, treat it as normal, and you'll get more and more anger over time. so do speak up and if they can't change, you exit the relationship.
12:10 pm
- good advice. thanks for talking with us. - my pleasure. thank you for inviting me. - we all need to take a chill pill every now and then. but if you know someone that has real trouble dealing with anger on a regular basis, they may need professional help. for teen kids news, i'm amelia. (bright guitar music) - why you may need to wake up to the many reasons caffeine is bad for you and your schoolwork. check out my make the grade report next. so here's christin with this week's make the grade. - when it's time to focus, do you reach for a soda, a cup of coffee, or tea? if so, you could be reaching for trouble. medical experts at johns hopkins university say caffeine is a mood-altering drug. caffeine can give you a short-term energy boost, but it can also cause anxiety, the jitters, and trouble sleeping.
12:11 pm
and when it wears off, you can feel pretty sluggish. even worse, if you have a regular caffeine habit your body begins to crave it. so when it doesn't get caffeine, you can have withdrawal symptoms, including headaches and difficulty concentrating. and that's not good for your schoolwork. so check the label of that soda and go for the decaf if you love coffee and tea. you're under enough pressure from school as it is. don't let caffeine make things harder. i'm christin, here to help you make the grade. - for most of us, the common cold is all too common. but here's something you probably didn't know. coughing can be more than just a nuisance. it can actually hurt you. in fact, if you cough too hard, you can actually crack a rib. and that's nothing to sneeze at. (smooth electronic music) - the history behind the word mascara is kinda fuzzy.
12:12 pm
some say it comes from the spanish word masacara, meaning to mask or stain. regardless of its roots, mascara sure helps make eyelashes look longer, lusher, and better defined. but as makeup expert jeanna doyle tells us, you need to be careful how you use it. - so for mascara, that's one thing you don't wanna share. don't share your eyeshadow, eye makeup, or any mascara with a girlfriend. and replace it after three months. for placement, you wanna place the mascara as close to the root as possible, and then come all the way out to the ends. - by the way, long ago one of the ingredients for mascara was crocodile poop. fortunately, that's no longer the case. for teen kids news, i'm jackie. - this important message is brought to you by the national road safety foundation. (gentle dramatic music)

12:17 pm
- early in the 14th century, pope boniface viii wanted to beautify st. peter's. the pope made a list of great italian artists and gave it to a messenger, telling him to bring back an example of each artist's work. the messenger dutifully traveled around italy collecting samples. on his list was an artist in florence named giotto. after much searching, the messenger finally found giotto, who looked more like a simple peasant than a great painter. the messenger arrogantly demanded that giotto give him one of his works to bring back to rome. instead, giotto took a brush, dipped it in red paint, and in one stroke drew a circle. impatiently, the messenger demanded that giotto finish the drawing. giotto said it was finished. the messenger angrily grabbed the picture and left in a huff. returning to rome, he showed the art that he had collected. "is there nothing from giotto?" the pope asked. "he was a rude and crude fellow," the messenger replied. "what he sent was an insult, just a single brush stroke.
12:18 pm
"so i didn't want to bother you with it." still, the pope demanded to see giotto's work. "you fool," he cried. "anyone who can draw a perfect circle freehand "is indeed a great artist." and that's how giotto began to work for the pope. with art smart, i'm katie. (gentle guitar music) (crowd cheering) - as we know from us history, the civil war was started when confederates fired on fort sumter. one of the captains for the union in the fort was a man by the name of abner doubleday. later in his life, doubleday was credited for inventing the game of baseball. since then, millions of americans have played baseball all across the united states, in the north and in the south. i'm matt for teen kids news. - in many science fiction movies, you see the heroes jump into their rocketship and travel to distant worlds. for example, in the film the martian, matt damon plays an astronaut who takes a trip to the red planet.
12:19 pm
it seems like science fiction is about to become a reality. nasa is planning to send astronauts to mars sometime in the decade of the 2030s. the trip is expected to take a staggering nine months. i sure hope they have netflix. - coming up, another great recipe from miss teen usa. - it's my take on a southwestern-inspired dish. - we'll show you how to make it when teen kids news returns.
12:21 pm
but she has a killer recipe right out of the american southwest. nicole tells us more. - looking for something different to make for lunch? miss teen usa k. lee graham is going to show us how to make a black bean wrap. so what's first? - well, first we're gonna start with our tortilla. we have some low carb tortillas here. i love this version because you can get, you know, that good wrap without having too many carbs at one time. so we're gonna start. we have our tortilla, we have a plate. - and this is a damp paper towel? - yes.
12:22 pm
so we're just gonna put that on top and microwave this to heat it up. it only takes 15 seconds. - alright, so while you do that, i should grab the black beans? - yes, if you should rinse the black beans. rinsing them actually helps take away some of the sodium from all the packaged black beans, so. - [nicole] and the whole can, right? - yes, the whole can. and we're just gonna use a little bit of that. - alright. so just rinse them nice and thoroughly? - yep. - yeah, i can see all that sodium coming off them. - yeah, and then if you'll put those in the bowl. let me get the wrap. - and then i should move onto the corn after i've done this and do the same thing? - yes, the same thing. - alright. i didn't know there was so much sodium in these canned-- - yeah, it's a sneaky little thing that happens. you think you're eating really healthy, but if you're getting tons of sodium it's actually kind of, it's not great. - alright, so let's rinse them again. and all of these, this whole can is gonna go into our burrito?
12:23 pm
- we're just gonna use a fourth of the can. so using a lot less, we're just gonna prep it. - sounds good. - alright, while you're doing that, i'm gonna add some of these fresh bell peppers. we chopped up some orange bell peppers. i'm gonna add it to our spinach, and we are gonna steam these in the microwave. - excellent. - we're just gonna add a little bit of water to this, to get some good steam. just a little splash. - [nicole] alright. - that's good. and we're gonna pop this in the microwave for two-and-a-half minutes. - wonderful. - we just have to let that cook. - great, and then what's left to do? - next we are going to... plate. we're gonna add some corn and the black beans to the actual wrap. so we've got a little bit of this. and depending on how big your wrap is, you can put more or less if you'd like. black beans are a great source of protein,
12:24 pm
especially if you're vegetarian or vegan. and then corn also gives you some healthy carbs. - [nicole] what does vegan mean? - vegan means that you don't eat any milk, no dairy, no eggs, no animal products. so no meat, either. and i've actually been eating vegan for a while, and this is one of my favorite meals. - is it difficult to get enough protein into your diet when you're a vegan? - yeah, sometimes. but if you have lentils and beans like this, then it makes it all easier. - excellent. - so we've got our beans, and we just need to wait for our spinach. - [nicole] wonderful. - alright, so the spinach and the peppers are done. i'm just gonna take it out with my oven mitt because it's very hot. yum, they smell delicious. i love colorful bell peppers. so i'm gonna toss this a little bit. everything's all nice and steamed. - yeah, we definitely have a whole beautiful color palette going on here. - yeah, it's like a little rainbow you get to eat for lunch. - absolutely.
12:25 pm
i'd love to eat a rainbow for lunch. - well, now you can. so we're gonna add our spinach. i love lots of spinach, and spinach is so great. it's full of antioxidants and it's just great and full of nutrients. - so do you have to steam the spinach or can you eat it fresh if you want to? - yeah, you can eat it fresh if you want to. i like steaming it just because it gives it, you know, like a nice flavor. i'm just adding some bell peppers. and same with the bell peppers. you can eat it raw if you'd like. we are gonna add now some avocado, which is one of my favorite foods in the entire world. it's full of healthy fats and also fiber. so fiber helps keep you full. - i love avocado, so. - it's so yummy. we're just gonna add a couple slices. alrighty. and now to top it all off, we're gonna add some pico de gallo. it's great. it gives it that little-- - [nicole] southwestern-- - that's right. and now we have our little rainbow. it's so yummy. and you can fold it in half,
12:26 pm
and this is our wrap. sometimes it gets really full, which is the best kind of wrap. so hopefully we're gonna be able to fold this. - the professionals at chipotle always make it look so easy. - it is not that easy. so we're gonna cut this in half, and enjoy. - maybe it's more of a taco now. - yeah, i think it's more, sometimes if you get a bigger wrap then you can kind of obviously, you know, put more in there or fold it better. but it's also great to eat this way. so here we have-- - so now do we get to enjoy it? - we do get to enjoy it. enjoy the rainbow. - great. maybe i'm gonna just kind of... see if i can't get just a bite with a fork here. - [k. lee] i think i'm gonna try to go for the actual wrap experience. - [nicole] you're braver than i. - let's see if this is gonna work. it's spilling. oh my gosh. - cheers. - cheers. mmm, quite a fan.
12:27 pm
- lots of flavors going on there. - but good flavors. - yeah. - so say adios to boring lunches and make yourself a black bean wrap. muy bueno. the recipe is on our website. for teen kids news, i'm nicole. (bright guitar music) - that's a recipe i've got to try. that's all for this week's show, but be sure to tune in next week for more teen kids news. (bright guitar music)
