[ applause ] >> reporter: a packed jim at the cherry hill school administration building parents and students fired up over two things. timothy lock ap history teacher allegedly on administrative leave and concern about the safety of schools in the district namely cherry hill high school east. >> unjust to this man he's a veteran and he's been teaching at east for 17 years. this is not only about him but the safe in our school. >> mr. lock once told me in ap world history class last year if you see something that's not right, say it and say the problem much that's what i'm trying to do. >> board of ed members couldn't discuss specifics about the teacher but a lot of rumors going around. lock reportedly spoke to his class bout deadly parkland shooting and concern about school safety at cherry hill east. which led to student protests and walkouts after he was allegedly removed from class.

>> there's lot of information that floats around, okay? we cannot discuss anything about that. all right? >> reporter: parents have mixed feelings whether they feel schools in the cherry hill district are safe. >> our schools in cherry hill are safe but we need to take it to that second level. >> these kids are scared and they don't feel safe. i'm hoping that tonight is the beginning of change for our district. >> sake is a sixth grader and says he won't feel safe until there's an armed officer at almost every entrance to school. >> i'm scared of like no one -- everyone is scared of death. no one's understands how scary this is. >> reporter: and student representative also pointed out during this meeting at the cherry hill district 2020 plan includes plans for vest toy balls and cameras but that student said 2020 is too late. change needs to happen now. lucy also the principal of cherry hill east here tonight. he has not commented so far. that meeting still going on right now. it started at 7:00.

>> so wool see how this all shakes out. shawnette wilson live there in cherry hill. thank you much. more than 3,000 florida students will return to class tomorrow exactly two weeks after a gunman opened fire inside their school marjory stoneman douglas who'll high school killing 17 people. students have been meeting with lawmakers and president trump in washington, d.c. and as well as leaders in their own state calling for gun reform and better safety. counselor and therapy dogs will help everyone who needs it on that campus. >> an eight-year-old girl survived a hit-and-run in camd camden. as police search for the driver who took off, she and her mother are speaking exclusively to fox 29 about what happened. our dave kinchen is live in camden with what they're talking about tonight. dave? >> reporter: lucy, the strength of this little girl is really quite incredible. tonight she season her mother they want justice. >> i was at work and they called

me. i was at work and then they called me and i just came believe it. i thought she was joking. >> reporter: she'll never forget the terrifying moment when she learned her eight-year-old daughter was hit by a car that never stopped. this is surveillance video of the car just before impact. >> god everything does everything for a reason. if i was there i don't know what would have happened to me. so just she's going into the hospital it was just crazy. i had to keep removing myself out of the room because i'm trying to be strong for her. you know what i mean even now i'm trying to be strong for her and not letting her see me cry but she knows it hurts me just as much as it hurts her. >> reporter: police say the crash happened at ferry avenue and phillips street in camden last tuesday evening. cops say the driver of what they believe to be a gray ford fusion was speeding when it struck the little girl as she crossed the street. >> it's hard for me because i never knew this was going to happen to me. i never thought that it was

going going to happen to me. i didn't plan for it to happen to me and this happened to somebody else i know that they -- i could feel their pain because i'm in pain right now. >> reporter: she's on crutches now after a stay in the hospit hospital. but her hurt continues. >> it's two bruises on my foot and then there's a bruise on my face and then bruises on my toes it's hard. i'm just a little girl. so it's much harder for me. >> reporter: police tell us someone knows something. >> plenty of people in that area. we're hoping that someone in that area does recognize that vehicle or maybe the person driving that vehicle. >> reporter: meantime joe zeta has something to say to the driver who left her daughter in pain. >> make god have mercy on your soul because at the end of the day you're the one that will have to live with this, not me. you know, and it's easier and it's going to be better for you if you just turn yourself in. >> reporter: police say the passenger side mirror fell off during the crash. they have that as evidence. but they really need witnesses to come forward.

lucy. >> all right. thank you, dave. three guys thought they had brilliant plan for easy money walk into a pizza hut, rob it at bun are begun point. they had no idea of an idea that was or what was about to happen to them. the guy about the counter wasn't about to let them get away with anything. fox 29's dave schratwieser is live at police headquarters with well the hero of the day, dave. >> reporter: lucy, this is one brave guy. he looked down the barrel of a gun more than once during this violent struggle. tonight he tells us why he took matters into his own hands. >> the mindset of, you know i can got to do what i got to do. >> reporter: when three suspects with guns jumped the germantown last week trying to rob the place, they got little more than they bargained for from employee demetrius carneg carnegie. >> through my head, go into security mode and take care of what i got to take care of. >> he stepped up and was hero. >> reporter: he was off duty and just stopped by to visit his sister who also works here. he went into the attack mode to fight off three gunmen as they

terrorized his sister and fellow employees with those guns. >> honestly didn't know if they was real or not, but high to take my chance. anything could have happened after they got the money. >> reporter: surveillance cameras captured demetrius as he knocked one of the robbers backwards while another robber appeared ready to shoot him. >> at any given time at least one was pointing a weapon at him. they were demanding money. he did not stop. >> reporter: at one point demetrius shoved an entire rack of pizza boxes down on the three teenaged bandits. they had enough, jumped the counter and fled as startled employees looked on. >> i was going to continue to -- >> i think he was brave. >> reporter: kashi mustafa works along alongside our hero some days. he wouldn't surprised by his co-worker's courage but thankful he stepped up and protected everyone. >> the guy had heart. you know, fought three of them off and then they just ran out. >> not saying everybody should

be a hero or try to fight guns because that's not the idea. more the fact of not stepping down. >> reporter: not stepping down. now the three guys fled with nothing. they didn't get a dime. i asked carnegie tonight if he'd do this again. he candidly said absolutely i would. lucy. >> thank goodness he's okay and everybody else. thank you much, dave. >> reporter: yes. >> breaking news in west philadelphia. investigators are looking into what started a deadly fire. sky fox over the 5300 block of race street shortly before 9:00 this evening. a home on fire there. and firefighters found a body. the medical examiner is investigating as well. no word tonight on who died or how. it's the second deadly fire in the city today. a woman died in strawberry mansion this morning. our old parking tickets perhaps weighing you down. we've got good news. some of those old tickets are going to disappear on thursday. thanks to new program the city is introducing that goes for altogether and storage fees as well. but there's a catch.

live in queen village chris o'connell there always is. >> reporter: well lucy if you know the philadelphia parking authority, you know they're tough. you know they're aggressive and you know they love to put those little envelopes on your windshield. but tonight, if you have any unpaid parking ticke tickets, te might be some good news. sean apparently had better put money in the meter because over the years, he has seen his share of these blue and white beauties. >> i've had, you know, probably a few grand worth at least. >> reporter: don't do a thing before you pay that old parking ticket. >> it will allow all parking tickets that people have received before 2013 to be wiped out. >> reporter: city council announcing a bill break for pa parking scoff laws amnesty program where the ppa will eliminate all parking tickets before 2013 but here's the cat catch. you must first sign up online with the program starting thursday.

also, all current tickets from 2013 to 2018 must be paid in full or set up a two-year payment plan. >> you can lose your car if you don't have enough money to get it so they make money off of that. so that's good. >> reporter: program will mostly help those who are way behind. like sandra, a couple months ago we showed you how she got the boot on her car for an unpaid ticket from 1993. >> i know the city is broke and i know they're scuffling for money bone are don't take it on me report roar the change comes after a city audit shows since 2012 the ppa has failed to collect more than $77 million in outstanding penalties and fees that could have gone to city schools. for some like sean, the nice gesture is a little too late. >> it makes me sad that i paid all my tickets. [ laughter ] >> because i can have made out on that deal. >> reporter: the city anticipate as lot of people to sign up for the amnesty program. you can do it starting thursday

two philadelphia police officers saving a man from a house fire. the newly released video from march29th of last year. a home on the 1900 block of north 17th street was a blaze. heavy smoke was pouring from it when officers donahue and harper went in. they found a man in a wheelchair on the second floor and carried him outside. doctors treated both officers and the man for smoke inhalati inhalation. investigators believe the man started the fire in his home and prosecutors have charged him with arson. philadelphia's home to some beautiful majestic big old tre trees. but that size can sometimes be a problem. decades ago the city planned them but these days, well, as our bruce gordon explains, some can become an expensive problem to homeowners who enjoy indoor plumbing. >> reporter: what's not to love about the big beautiful trees that line the 7500 block

of walnut lane in mt. airy? plenty says the homeowner at 7528 brenda simmons. >> they can take the tree down and they need to get rid of it. >> reporter: we met the simmons monday night as we watched work being done to repair broken sewer lines caused says louis by ever expanding roots from their city planned street tree. >> it started off as $8,800 project. now it will tur turn worse becae my retainer wall has to come down and they have to go deeper on to the property to get to the pipes report roar the broken sewer pipes forced them to limit the use of toil that are toilet for fear of backups. they say it happened half a dozen times. >> you do the wrong thing and wind up with sewage in the basement. >> yup. we use a wet vac to get it all up. >> they've been asking the cit city's department of parks and rec remove the tree and -- >> they have been here. they look at the tree. they said to them the tree is healthy. it's there's nothing wrong with

it so no reason for them to take the down. >> reporter: in fact parks and rec tells us they rated the tree's condition as fair and placed it on a lengthy list for removal but with no guarantee when they'd actually get around to it. they did send the simmons this letter last year saying if they wanted the tree work performed immediately, they should hire a private tree contractor. in other words, you're on your own. the city tells us there's no way of knowing for sure it was the tree roots that broke the sewer line. but brenda says self of her neighbors have had the same problem. >> like her, she had her pipes replaced. he had to do his. >> reporter: at the very least the decades owl street troops trees up and down this block have ought out grown their narrow planting beds uprooting sidewalks. theater the homeowner's responsibility to fix. these street trees look nice from a distant but up close, brenda is no fan. >> if i was a lumber jack myself i'd take it down. [ laughter ] >> reporter: it's very clear in some cases at least the wrong finds of trees were planned way back when the current administration hasn't the money

nor the staff to remove all these problem trees. a parks and rec spokeswoman notes that in most cases these trees were planned long before the homeowners moved in so buyer beware? well, louis simmons tells me he remembers the tree being planted by the city. remembers his mother then the homeowner accepting it. of course, with no way of knowing it would cause all these problems years later. i'm bruce gordon, fox 29 news. developing right now, jared kushner president trump's son-in-law and top weiss house adviser has big problems tonig tonight. months of exhaustive background check led to the downgrade of security clearance. iain page is in our technical operations sent with what's happening now. iain. >> lucy, new revelations tonight calling into question jared kushner's ability to work in the white house. according to report in the washington post, official from at least four countries have talked about ways to manipulate kushner over his sprawling business ties. among the countries mexico, israel, china and the united

philadelphia there's kind of a good reason why. the nfl's come competition committee is in the early tapes of changing the catch rule. basically saying that bryant did catch the ball in that 2014 playoff game. here's a look at that catch. referees overruled this saying bryant didn't main tape control of the ball all the way to the ground. because of that, the cowboys didn't get in position for go ahead touchdown against agree bay and they lost that game. the catch rule is one of the most controversial and rather inconsistent rules in the game it is says a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass they must control the ball the whole way throughout the process. if they lose control and it touches the ground before they regain control, then it's incomplete. now changes could be made after league meetings in orlando next month. i know a loft fans are looking for that answer. coming up the sixers look to start another winning streak tonight plus what lebron james said about those billboards all

fox 29 viewer reached out to us after he found something wrong with the tv he bought at wall march. he brought a 65-inch screen. inches matter it wasn't off by a lot and it was old as in 2014. i was going say 1914 that would have been really old. so what happened? fox 29's jeff cole has the tale of the tv come to open it up, and this was is what was inside. >> it's a 48-inch samsung television. that's what len green of northeast philly found in the box after his february 23rd purchase at the philadelphia mills walmart. but there's a catch. he paid for a 65-inch. >> what did you think? >> i was in shock. literal until shock. um, i thought i was losing my mind. i took my measuring tape out, measure it from corner to corner

dam near 48-inches. >> reporter: green the father of two small children and a dealer at area casinos had a spot for the tv in his new apartment. he says he returned to walmart where store managers watch the purchase being made on video. and received some bad news. >> they said since the box wasn't tampered with on camera that they couldn't do anything for us. >> reporter: green paid just over 1,000 bucks for the television and service plan. the box clearly states there's a 65-inch tv inside. the 48-inch set looks lost in there. green made a call to samsung and gave them the serial and model numbers. >> come to find out they told us this tv is from 2014. >> reporter: green and his fiance' traded calls with the national retailer but couldn't seem to find a solution. he claims walmart tells him it has no record of a tv boeing purchased and returned allowing for someone to switch sets. green thinks it may have happen

sky fox over a fire in west philadelphia. this is the 100 block of south 50th street. two people are in the hospital from this fire just past 9:00 tonight. we do not yet know their conditions. how many drunk driving arrests does it take to get a guy off the road do you suppose upper darby police just arrested a man again for drunk driving. it's not his first time, not his second and if outhit thought it was his third you'd still be wrong much this is his eighth arrest for dui. and our hank flynn is asking, how many is too many? >> i think that we got to continue. i mean i think he needs to go to jail. i think he needs to be rehabbed. um, give haven't an opportunity. how many times can you go to the well. >> reporter: it's hank i'm in upper dash plea police headquarters where they recently took in this guy charged him with his eighth du. eight. my take is, how can ooh aguelike this possibly still be behind the wheel? the accused

48-year-old timothy fry saporous spec part. um per darby superintendent michael his wood says fries was drunk at 9:00 a.m. slumped over the wheel at state road and fairfax avenue in upper darby when police found him. schoolbus driver is the one that notified the police. he's passed out behind the wheel of the car. the car in drive. the officer had to open the door and put the car in park. so he's lucky he didn't cause a catastrophic event or kill somebody. >> reporter: the question is, how is fries still driving? in addition to his eighth dui, this is the third time he's been charged driving with the suspended license. that wasn't valid. i drove to fries address in prospect park and rank the doorbell. >> ma'am, how are you? is tim here. >> no, he's not. report roar fries remains in jail $25,000 bail. 10% cash option the woman at the door gave her name as christine mcginn. >> can you tell me who you are. are you his wife or sister. >> i'm his fiance'.

times maybe he's not getting the picture. eight times. the next drunk driving escapade could be the pun that kills somebody and i hate prisons if he doesn't care why should i? 8dui's ought to be more than enough. i'm hank and that's my take. ♪ people park in bus zones as we all know much it's a big problem in the city of philadelphia. but now the parking authority is looking to crack down. one possible solution is to use the cameras on the very buses those drivers are blocking. fox's dawn timmeney has more. >> park wherever they want. >> reporter: ed kipp is referring to cars and delivery trucks illegally parked in bus zones and bus stops all over the city. he use as cane to get around and says maneuvering around them makes it harder to get on and off the bus. >> that blocks everybody. you have to walk around to get to them. i guess that's part of life. i've only lived here in philly since may and i've just learned to it that way. >> reporter: but the philadelphia parking authority

says, it's not safe for riders and not legal and it wants to ticket drivers who park at bus stops. >> i don't think people often think about how dangerous it is for passengers of septa buses and it is a major congestion issue. >> reporter: ppa says the plan would be to use cameras already mounted in septa some 1200 buses. drivers would just hit a button and the camera would take a picture of the violators license plate. >> we believe that there are over a thousand tickets per day of these type of violations. it would be very similar to red light camera. you would receive a tick in the mail. report roar the hope is to eventually curb this type of behavior but long-septa rider brian harrington says parking is already at a premium in the city and he thinks it's an awful idea. >> sometimes you park that for minute and just jump out, and nine times out of ten even if the bus lane is open, the buses don't pull in. you still vol to walk not street so it look like the ppa just trying to get more. >> reporter: the tickets would

for any of it homeland security arrested him. he's posted bail. developing right now outside our nation's capitol three people are in the hospital after opening a letter with an unnope substance inside. it happened this afternoon at joint base meyer henderson hall in arlington vac have a. authorities say nearly a dozen people started feeling sick shortly after one of them opened that letter. three of them went to the hospital as a precaution. no word on that substance as of yet. the search continues tonight for a missing cdc employee timothy cunningham. officials say he called out sick from work earlier this month. and no one has heard from him since and as fox's angela procter reports investigators seem to have very little to go on. >> the only thing we have is this missed promotion we talked to several of his co-workers they indicated obviously he was disappoint bowed think promoti promotion. >> atlanta police revealing cdc epi deem mocks timothy cunningham was disappointed after promotion did he not get at the time of his disappearance

parkway looking good as well with light winds, clear skies and 43 degrees. not so bad. the high today 56 degrees. that's about 10 degrees above normal. and tomorrow we will do it aga again. still 43 in the city. 41 in wilmington and 44 in reading and lancaster. 38 in the poconos. so pretty mild everywhere. throughout the northeast, in the 40s and some 50s but not huge range in temperature which is typically the case when you're talking about february. that cold airy treated to the north high pressure off the coast. but warm front is approaching that means some high clouds you'll see that milky white sky during the day tomorrow. with the high clouds increasing. then that means warmer air is moving in from the southwest this storm has created big problems in the south. significant flooding and that's moving toward us. it doesn't look like much on the ray bar. watch what happens we see it moving into the tennessee valley and mitter mid atlantic by tomorrow evening that area of low pressure over chicago and midwest by thursday morning this is when we really have to start paying attention to it. we'll watch it continue to intensify and then you see two

areas of low pressure. it's transferring energy off the coast and many times we see this winter storms nor'easters. if it redevelops off the coast farther south we have a better chance of seeing some snow but you can see the secondary development right off new jersey a lot of warm air in place and it looks like that is going to be well too far to the north and east to be impacting us with snow. that colder air will be pulled down behind it but the precipitation looks like it will be out of here by that time. some cold air filtering in these isobars are close together. that means rain and wind for your friday and even into saturday. overnight tonight, low temperatures in the 30s. during the day tomorrow, you see high clouds building in. high temperatures near 60 really nice day. winds out of the southwest. then wednesday really watching that storm develop. periods of rain begin as march begins on thursday but it's mi mild. friday periods of rain and wind. down the shore, it could mean flooding, beach erosion and whipping winds. saturday windy. sunday we dry it out.
