east market street. a very active scene right now. we have police also on the scene. i want to get back to them to find out more information and of course i will bring that to you as soon as we get that. >> thank you. a federal court says check points like those used by dc police in the trinidad neighborhood last summer maybe unconstitutional. the three-judge panel ordered the lower court to re-examine the tactic. it is viewed as a major victory from a civil rights group that filed a lawsuit to stop the practice. audrey barnes is joining us live from trinidad with more on the developments. >> you can see the makeshift memorial to 13-year-old alonzo robin shot shot and killed walking down the street with miss mother and a sibling. his death and a host of others within a two week period prompted police to set up check points to curb the gun violence out here. it is that practice that is

under fire. a two-week crime wave in med the lifeof 13- year-old alonzo robinson shot on the sidewalk in front of his mom and a sibling. 13 others were shot in the same neighborhood during a two-week period. police set up road blocks on two occasions checking who was coming and going and limiting access to the area. a process a federal appeals court has ruled may be unconstitutional. >> we put the check points in five or six days and one for eight or nine days and there were no dead. >> reporter: they filed a lawsuit for the check points they deemed military style. they relied on chief lanier who said she would use them until a court told her not to. that day may have come. and the announcement of the latest all hands on deck enforcement officer, mayor fenty said the court ruling won't stop them from

aggressively fighting crime it. >> is a tool used in the most extreme circumstances. it is not a tool we have used since then because it hasn't been needed. >> reporter: peter nichols the attorney general is talking about another appeal. >> if this is inappropriate in light of the court's decision we will come up with new strategies to get done what needs to be done. >> reporter: what you see behind me is one of the strategies they are employing. it is all hand on deck. we see assistant police chief diane grooms down there and some other police officers here in trinidad. they will be out, all hands on deck, throughout the community. as far as the check points, dc attorney general peter nichols says he will appear to the dc circuit court and if he has to the supreme court. in a statement released moments ago, police chief lanier said she only did what was necessary to keep the people on the streets of trinidad safe. at this point it does not look like she will use those check points anytime soon. back to you. >> thank you for that report.

general motors is out of bankruptcy and as drew levinson reports the u.s. automaker is promising us all a leaner, greener operation. >> reporter: loyal gm customers aren't hard to find in michigan. >> we all need to get together to support gm rather than turn our backs on gm, because what is gm, america. >> reporter: general motors is out of bankruptcy and promising to stay out of trouble. >> business as usual is over at general motors. >> reporter: ceo fritz henderson introduced the new gm as a company with three priorities, better cars a new corporate culture and a laser focus on the customer. the old general motors received a lot of criticism, relying too heavily on gas-guzzling trucks and suvs. the new gm says it will concentrate on the fuel efficient models. top of the list is the electric volt. but since it won't hit the market until next year they are relying on solid performers like the malibu and it is creating buzz with the new

version of its muscle car, the camaro. 9,000 sold in june and gm says it's the start of a comeback. >> i have a gm product right now. i have been treated real well here and i want to stick with it. >> reporter: plus, the company that was born decades before the computer era will now sell on ebay. for now the automaker is down to four brands, chevrolet, buick, cadillac and gmc. >> we will have a leaner, faster, better gm. we have been looking forward to this. >> reporter: it is still dependent on the go. which owns 60% and pledged a $0 billion in loans. gm promises to pay it all back but in a rough economy there could be potholes along the way. 9 news now and wusa9.com. and the treasury department released a statement this afternoon crediting gm's restructuring with saving both the automaker and tens of thousands of american jobs. if you ride metro's red

line you have to get ready for delays and slowed down commutes. next week the metro board is expected to approve a $177 million overhaul of the red line which starts next year. the improvements were recommended before last month's deadly train crash. the first phase of the project will focus on the portion of the red line between dew point circle and silver spring. trains will single track while that work is being done, mostly after 8 p.m. the work includes -- money brown missed another scheduled court appearance today and james von brunn's attorney said he is not well enough yet. he remains hoppized after being shot in the face by museum

guards. he faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of another museum guard stephen t. johns. and the trial is set for the maryland mother accuse of killing her daughters and storing them in the freezer. renee bowman is scheduled to go to trial and will face charges in calvert county for the alleged abuse of another daughter. a man is under arrest for the killing of an 8-month-old baby in prince georges county. 21-year-old clifton wilson was taken in to custody in charles county. 8-month-old anthony maurice savoy was killed. the child was in a car suit inside of a vehicle. he is charged with first-degree murder and held without bond. police release a sketch of a person linked to an attempted abduction that happened in manassas. the man tried to reportedly abduct two teens. both girls got away and went to the community center's pool asking for help. police are on the lookout for a

dark blue minivan with virginia tags in that vicinity. a couple of washington institutions are set to close. after 51 years on captiol hill, trover book shop is going out of business. it has been the site of many celebrity book signings, hillary clinton, barbara walters and colin powell to name a few. the current economic climate led to the demise. and it is also last call for nathan's in georgetown. the restaurant at the corner of wisconsin and m will close for good over this weekend. with owner's q and a session it was a popular place. black bears are making a comeback in our region so it is not unusual to see them in our area. what is strange is to see one in a grocery store. these photos were snapped at a giant grocery on u.s. 17 in southern stafford county.

on wall street, stocks ended the week heading in opposite directions. the dow finished down 36 to close at 8146. the nasdaq up three points and the s&p lost 3 points. tonight we now know that one of the victims of that deadly car train crash in michigan was a 21-year-old man from our neck of the woods. terrence harris lived in stafford, virginia and was seen here in a picture held by his mom. he was killed yesterday outside of detroit. he is one of five young people killed when a railroad car skirted a railway gate.

police say it was more likely bad judgment rather than alcohol having anything to do with this. fire broke out on the logs neck bridge in the bronx this morning. that shut down traffic in both directions and caused backups in to the bronx and queens. the fire was tough to fight because it turned under the bridge. luckily no injuries reported. the fire started in the construction materials. illinois senator roland burris won't be running for a full term next year. his short career has been clouded by the circumstances of how he got there. he was appointed by blagojevich. he later faced a perjury investigation over details of his contact with the governor's office. but burris now says his decision not to run isn't based on the controversy but because of money. >> the reality of being a united states senator requires not only a significant time commitment to performing the job, but almost equal

commitment to raising funds to run competitively for the office. >> published reports claim burris decide not to run because he had only raised $20,000 in campaign funds so far. after wrapping up the business at the g-8 summit, president obama sat down for an historic meeting with the pope. charlie d'agata reports from the vatican. >> president obama and pope benedict xvi jumped right in to some of the more controversial issues during their 30-minute private talk. they don't see eye to eye on abortion or stem cell research. the pope presented the president with a document explaining the church's opposition to the use of embryos for science. the president promised to read it on the plane. they also discussed immigration, middle east peace and aid to developing nations, area where the two are more closely aligned. the first lady and a handful of top aides got a chance to meet the pontiff. >> thank you so much.

very grateful. >> reporter: along with a gift exchange the president gave the pope a letter from ted kennedy and asked the pontiff to pray for the ailing senator. the pope asked the president how everything went at the g-8 summit here in italy. the president called the three days of tough negotiations very productive. speaking at the end of the summit, the president said leaders took a united stand against the iranian treatment of protesters after the disputed presidential election. >> what we wanted was exactly what we got which is a statement of unity and strong condemnation. >> reporter: before wrapping up the summit, the g-8 leaders signed on to a $20 billion aid package to help poor nations feed themselves. president obama ends his week overseas with a final stop in the african nation of ghana before heading home on saturday. charlie d'agata, 9 news now and wusa9.com. >> reporter: president obama also gave benedict a letter.

senator kennedy who has been diagnosed with brain cancer. the president asked the pope to pray for the massachusetts democrat. >> 400,000 people are homeless after a earthquake rocked southwestern china. the earthquake killed one person and injured hundreds more. 18,000 homes were leveled and 75,000 were damaged. thousands of tents, quits and other relief aid is on the way to the region. a 27-year-old spanish man was gored to death at the running of the bulls. he's the first person to be killed at the annual festival in spain in almost 15 years. nine others were hurt including a 61-year-old american who was hospitalized with internal bleeding. the trouble started when one bull broke away from the pact going different directions. there are no plans to cancel the remaining bull runs. it is not looking good for the launch of the space shuttle. thunderstorms are putting it in

86 on sunday and if i was going pick one of the two weekend days i would pick saturday to do something outside. partly cloudy skies. it will be comfortable not as cool as the last few days but cool for this time of the year. low temperatures in the 60s. southeast wind five to ten. start with partly sunny skies. after 4:00 or 5:00 in the afternoon. if you are out before then the weather should be fine. highs in the mid-80s and southwest winds 10 to 15 miles an hour. right now a touch of cloud cover. most of this will dissipate after sunset. they are consecutive in safe but you can see clouds from the west that will spill in behind those. we will call it partly cloudy on average tonight. no precipitation around us. there's some showers and storms out in the ohio valley that will affect us over the weekend but in the short term we should be fine. current temperatures upper 70s and low 80s. culpeper 82 hagerstown 80.

at national airport it is 77 with comfortable dew point of 57. major player in our weather scenario in the short term is an area of high pressure coming down the east coast. that will keep things dry tonight and most of the day tomorrow. as it slides away from us the system in the plain states we were talking about last night will move eastbound. it is triggering showers and storms in the midwest and that will give us a chance of rain over the weekend and a ch cean of slightly warmer temperatures. you see the heat in the southern plains. a little chunk of that comes toward us over the weekend. the seven-day forecast, once we get beyond sunday, it will cool off again. high of 79 on monday. a chance of a couple of showers but unusually cool all the way through the beginning of next week and still no 90-degree temperatures in our seven-day forecast, all the way through friday. best chance of rain is sunday and then at the end 0 of the week. >> how likely is that rain. >> i put that mark at 50% and you can expect it 10:06 in the

type of telephonic device, they can communicate with the offender who's in the residence. >> this is a land line that you have been able to set up. >> it is a device negotiators use where they can deliver this phone and there was some form of communication going before that. so they have been in communication for over an hour. but now it is advancing where they will be able to have phone conversations with them as well. >> reporter: do you know the types of communication that has been going on. have there been any demands. >> i don't know of any demands, specifics of that information. >> tell us about the hostages inside of the home. we were told by neighbors that it was an elderly couple with a great grandchild. >> i can't confirm any of that. all i know we are talking about two people were taken hostage. >> have you been able to establish where the homeowners are? >> within the residence, not sure exactly within the residence where exactly they are. again, on the scene we have the

leesburg police tactical team and leesburg sheriffs office and virginia state police. i believe they are able to pinpoint the exact locations. >> we are assuming it is the homeowners inside. >> it is an assumption but i can't confirm it. >> tell us about evacuations. i understand some homes have been told to leave immediately. >> that's correct. well over an hour ago, if not longer, we reached out to all of the homeowners in within a city block of door to door to ask the residents to leave the area for their safety. anything we had done a reverse 911 call to their homes and put out electronic alerts, e-mails to tell people to stay in their residence in the southwest region for it to be safe. >> you have a lot of man power here. police just rolled by with their s.w.a.t. team. tell us what is going on right now. >> in addition, we certainly have a state police tactical

team and cloud loudoun county sheriffs tactical team and they brought in cameras getting them closer to the residence we have tremendous partnership with agencies. fairfax county police department provided their helicopter for aerial surveillance while the suspect shortly after he committed the first robbery at 11:30 this morning. a good partnership among the law enforcement agencies. >> reporter: do we have any idea who this person is that robbed the jewelry store and who's inside the home right now? >> don't have any information about this individual who conducted that robbery. i nino he had abandoned a vehicle before he went in the house where he took the residents or the folks there hostage. they are trying to gofer that vehicle in great detail to see if they can learn more information on who he is. >> thank you very much. as we mentioned this began with an armed robbery at a jewelry store at 11:30. we talked to the jewelry store owner. this is what she has to say. >> i ran and started to

sack. a followup to a story that is raising a lot of questions. it volumes a -- it involves a valley club, a private swim club outside of philadelphia and the members are accused of racial diel discrimination. it happened on june 29th when 65 children from the creative staff kids camp visited. after one visit the club cancelled the contract after members complained. the club said it was an overcrowding issue but some suggest it is because many of the children from the camp are african-american. >> if they only rescind it it is only hurting the children. it is hurting our children and their children and no children should be hurt. >> reporter: the protesters, some of them members of the club, reject the overcrowding explanation and say the club covers ten acre and has two pools, one just for kids. confirmation hearing for

sonia sotomayor begin on monday and joining us the host of face face the nation, bob schiffer. you will be talking exclusively with the top two member of the senate judiciary committee. >> that's right. how are you tonight? we have kent layhy who chairs the committee and sessions who will need the republicans. the is the ranking republican on the committee. these hearings are always about more than just the qualifications of the nominee. they are a referendum on every senator and his politics back home and how strong or weak he is. every senator who votes on whether or not to confirm these nominees has to check back to see how his standing is back home and in many cases that sometimes determines how the vote will go. there are a lot of people who think that barack obama may

have sort laid a political trap for some republican senators on this by nominating an hispanic woman. it will be difficult for senators in some of these, especially southwestern state and border states where you have a rising hispanic population to vote against the hispanic woman. they have to have a good reason and that's why these hearings will be some interested when they unfold i'm told that sonia sotomayor has called son some 8 t senators in person and that's not a small fete because remember she is doing it all by being a hobble. he had a bad leg break an i'm told she is still in some pain about that but having said that she got to see more than 80 senators in opinion as she made the rounds on captiol hill. >> thank you for that. we want to remind everyone you can watch the face the nation

summertime is a time to read a book and technology has changed huh we read our novels. sony's reader and the kindle are two of the newest. >> kimberly has a kindle. >> i keep it in the car for car pool with the kids and take it everywhere with me. it is in my bag everywhere. >> reporter: paul reynolds is also impressed with the kindle ii. >> the type is chris. and you can easily change the size. turning the page is as fast as turning the page of a real book and if you get tired of reading the kindle will read to you. >> it was a sort of buzzing sensation. >> reporter: and he found it surprisingly easy to use. >> no computer is needed.
