i'm bruce johnson. thank you for joining us this saturday. our top story this evening -- two people found murdered in an aptmt ent in the 2200 block of university. and police believe it's connected to a suicide. our reporter is live with more. >> reporter: i just talked with detectives who received a search warrant to go inside the apartment building to do their investigation. you can see the yellow tape and the crime scene van at this location detectives say is a very bloody scene. the gruesome discovery came out initially as a fire call this morning. but when firefighters arrived, they not only found the stove on fire but also a woman dead near the doorway and a man dead in thelying room. the chief said they both appear

to be in their 20s. at the same time this investigation was going on, metropolitan police were working a suicide. detectives say in that case a 53-year-old man jumped from a 10-story building on 1st street near union at 9:00 a.m. the police say the man who took his life lived here and believe he may be responsible for the death. >> we think that individual in washington, d.c. was the one who actually committed the murders here in prince george's county and he actually fled to d.c. and committed suicide. >> it's a pretty violent scene. there's significant amount of blood all over the apartments. i'm not prepared to identify the weapon used at this point. >> reporter: the homicide happened on a second-floor unit of this university city apartment building. they have not identified the two homicide victims or released the name of the person

who committed suicide in the district. we are waiting to hear more information. live in langley park, 9news now and wusa9.com. >> okay. thank you. we're learning new details about a robbery and hostage situation that lasted more than ten hours and ended last night. nobody was hurt. the gunman has been arrested. lindsey mastis sat down with one of the hostages. what did you hear? >> well, he says he and his family are shaken up. nobody was hurt. it started around 11:30 at this jewelry and pawnshop. lynn said she knew something was wrong. >> wasn't acting right. give me some money. i want some money. took off running. >> lynn said she ran out of the store and down the street for help. police say the gunman, 49-year- old william spencer, then went to this home, tied up a 21-year- the bathroom with 2-year-old ck

reed. >> he tied up the baby-sitter and she had some marks on her arm. >> he says he and his wife came home for lunch. the door was locked. he opened a window and crawled in. >> as soon as he stepped in the living a room i was greeted with a gentleman with a gun drawn to my house. >> he said he thought the gunman was disoriented. >> he was repeating himself. i was giving the same answers. he would ask the same questions again and again. >> he said the gunman was there for nearly an hour. >> he ate some food out of my refrigerator, got a drink, smoked a couple of cigarettes in my house. >> police say he stole steve's car and went to the home of an 82 and 83-year-old. it took hours. but police say he finally gave himself up peacefully. now, family close to the couple say they are doing just fine. steve says he was renting the house but because of what happened, he plans to move out

and get a home in the country. police say the gunman, 49-year- old william spencer, is facing a host of felony charges. bruce? >> thank you. nasa has delayed launch at the space shuttle "endeavour" for at another die. lightning struck at least 11 times near the launchpad yesterday. there's no evidence of damage but nasa says it will take another day to check out the shuttle's critical system. >> we're getting close to launch. it's all plugged in. all of the instruments are all alive and active. when you get a big bolt of energy you run the risk of some of the electricity, maybe some malfunctioning. >> lift-off could take off tomorrow night if everything is okay. officials say mosquito

pools tested positive. this is near ft. mcnair. in 2008, six residents tested positive. nobody was tests positive so far this year. the health department recommends everyone remove standing water near their area. british airways are flying experts to a 747 that filled with smoke. more than a dozen people suffered minor injuries when they used the jumbo jet's inflatable slide to evacuate. >> we were all sitting on the plane to go and a noxious odor came over us and there was smoke in the back of the cabin. people said they couldn't breathe. so they determined we had a bit of an emergency and opened up the exit and we all slid down and here we are trying to

figure out what to do next. >> it was very smoky and hot and in a few minutes we had to evacuate. >> one passenger and one of the 18 crew members was hospitalized overnight. no fire was found. crews speck an electric -- suspect an electrical problem. michael jackson's mother and debbie rowe are seeking a delay in a hearing that could decide who gets custody of jackson's children. a hearing was set for monday but now that hearing has been set back for a week. >> a judge may decide in debbie rowe's interest. i mean, she is the biological mother. on the other hand, a judge may look at her history with the children and realize she doesn't have one. >> for now jackson's children remain with their grandmother at the jackson's family home. lawyers for rowe are trying to

anne arundel police are investigating the death of an elderly woman whose body was found in a freezer. police were called to a glen burnie, maryland home last night for a report of a death. when they arrived, they found the body of 83-year-old doris cooke in a freezer. they say the family put her there. her family says she died a few weeks ago and they put her body there. now police are trying to figure out if there is any wrongdoing

in her death. president obama went to ghana. he says the cruelty and oppression there can be overcome. he and his family toured an area there and challenged the people of africa to seize opportunity for peace, democracy and susan roberts has our report. >> reporter: the first african- american first family toured a castle in ghana, a police that once imprisoned african slaves. >> on the other hand, it's here where the journey of once this began. >> reporter: outside the castle, crowds cheered him. american presidents have visited him before. >> thank you. >> reporter: this is unique. something he noted in his speech. >> i have the blood of africa

a 30% chance of shower in. if you have outdoor plans, i wouldn't cancel anything. go ahead. if you are going to the beach or gonna play some golf, i think you will be just fine. for tonight, mostly cloudy skies, a chance for a shower or thunderstorm. some of those could produce locally heavy amounts of rain but i don't think this will be a widespread event. slow low temperatures between 65 and 70 south wind at 15 miles per hour. tomorrow, mixture of sunshine and clouds, a chance for a shower or thunderstorm and we'll get the temperatures in the mid-80s. let's go to live doppler 9000. we are seeing a little bit of shower activity around the city. nothing of any consequence. you see this batch of rain going through the southern end of the beltway. that was a thunderstorm about an hour ago. it's died out as it's come over to the city. we have more significant stuff in the northwest suburb. heading toward hagerstown right

now. this will continue to track to the east and move into the fredrick area, loudoun county. nothing severe. could produce rain as it comes by but nothing conducive. there is a cold front coming across ohio into west virginia and western pennsylvania right now. until the front goes through we have to keep the chance of shower in. the last couple of days, the dew points have been running in the 50s. the dew point at the top of the hour 66 at national airport. that's why it feels more muggy out there and that's why we have the precipitation. 84 at fredericksburg 79 in the city and 81 at bwi. everybody will settle back in the 60s by early tomorrow morning. during the day tomorrow the front i was talking about will be working its way through. it should be gone by lunchtime, but until it goes through your neighborhood, there will be a chance for a shower or

thunderstorm. only put 30% chance of it. most of the day will be fine. it will feel comfortable by sunday evening and sunday night. a little wave of low pressure may develop on the front. we'll say a slight chance for a shower on monday with a high near 82. 83 on tuesday. scattered hit-and-miss showers possible wednesday, thursday, friday with temperatures in the mid- to upper 80s. no 90s still in the seven-day forecast. it's been a long time. this is typically the hottest part of the year and to have a seven-day forecast in washington, d.c. where you don't say 90, it's a good thing. >> yeah. >> not burning up the grass. >> there you go. >> temperatures in the 80s. a group of wizards going back to work. the state of mississippi says it's final goodbyes to

before time runs out on this astonishing offer. you knew him personally, right? >> i knew steve because i was in nashville for three years there. like we were talking about, he's such a great guy but it's very hard for people to hear that, you know the circumstances. it's a difficult situation for everyone. it was exactly one week ago today that steve mcnair was murdered and yet for many it's not yet sunk in. thursday at a memorial in nashville, thousands turned out to pay respects and in mississippi, the numbers were staggering, nearly 5,000 onhand to say goodbye, including brett favre, jay cutler, jeff fisher and vince young there. among the many that spoke, former teammate, baltimore's ray lewis.
