sonia sotomayor begins confirmation process tomorrow. tonight our coverage begins with wayat andrews on capitol hill. >> reporter: judge sotomayor faces almost certain nomination. the path she took from the bronx to princeton and yale and then the federal bench make her the ideal nominee. >> this is a remarkable judge. >> reporter: but republicans will argue the judge has explaining to do. her comment about a wise latina woman reaching a better conclusion than a white male has led to charges her ethnicity is more important than objectiveity. senator jeff sessions was on face the nation. >> she has criticized the idea that a woman and man would reach the same result.

$25 million in damages after the metro train slammed into a waiting train in northeast. metro isn't sure that officials have said no dollars from d.c., maryland and virginia designated funds will be used to pay settlements, but legal analysts say the damages could run into the ten of millions of dollars and punitive damages could stretch into the hundreds of millions of dollars. we have an update on the philadelphia swim club accused of racism after barring dozens of minority children. members of the valley club of huntington valley voted to reinstate memberships of three day camps. the camps paid the club to let the campers swim at the club this summer. the memberships were canceled when the club said there wasn't enough room. several campers had said they heard members making racial comments when they swam there.

that the sole occupant of the residence was away at the time of the blast. 9 news was there when mary ivey returned to her home. >> i didn't know that. i'm just hearing it for the first time. >> reporter: she had been out of town and visiting friends in tennessee. this is what mary ivey returned to a few days ago. the home she and her late husband had lived in since the early 1970s was gone. >> what went through your mind when you first saw your house looking like this. >> i've never seen anything like it before. >> the early indication was that a gas explosion caused the blast. neighbors pointed to the road construction and suggested a worker hit a line while digging. >> all of the neighbors said there was one boom and it sounded like an atomic bomb. >> reporter: mary ivey says her being away wasn't luck, it was a blessing. >> this is a very emotional time for me, but on the other hand, this is a very spiritual time for me, because god saw to

change. partly cloudy skies for tonight. less humid than last night. you can open the windows. this afternoon temperatures in the upper 80s but we'll settle back into the upper 50s by monday. low to mid-60s in the city and northwest web at 10. tomorrow, partly sunny skies, pleasant, the high temperatures ranging from 82-87. sunrise tomorrow morning at 5:54. up until a couple of hours ago we were picking up thunderstorms in southern maryland and northern neck of virginia. most of that has dissipated now. and this is the leading edge of the dry air mass that is sinking down out of pennsylvania so. where the dry air meets the humid air down in the northern part of virginia, you get a few thunderstorms and that's what happened this evening. but most of the activity is gone now as i mentioned. so if you're watching us down there in southern maryland or the northern neck, any shower activity is dissipating quickly. got a couple of clouds out there tonight and that will keep the temperatures a touch warmer than they would have

otherwise. clouds at night have a tendency to do that. we could have dropped into the 50s if it weren't for the cloud deck. 77 degrees at the top of the hour. national airport, look at the dew point, 55. at this time last night the dew point was 70. so a big difference in the air mass tonight. and the northern suburbs, you will drop into the upper 50s but most of us will stay in the low to mid-60s as we head into monday morning. during the day tomorrow, high pressure takes control from the northwest. that system pushes further to the south and we wind up with a nice day. very little change expected through tuesday. by the middle and end of the week, the temperature and the humidity will go up just a little bit. mid to upper 80s and the scattered hit and miss thunderstorms that we're accustomed to here in the summertime for wednesday, thursday, friday and saturday. not washout means -- not a washout by any means. i certainly wouldn't cancel
