provide insurance coverage for individuals who choose not to buy it. senate republicans are bracing for a fight. >> we got the impression they want to pass anything they can as rapidly as they can. >> democrats did not say what the overall legislation would cost. president obama is urging the congress to pass legislation through both houses before the lawmakers leave the capital on their summer vacation. >> the woman accused of killing her father daughters told police in an interview that the girls were possessed by demons. a judge spent a second day reviewing a recording of police interrogating jacks. digital correspondent is in court all day. she joins us live with more on today's proceedings. audrey, tell us more. >> lesli, as you said for the last two days, judge frederick has been playing in open court eight hours of the interrogation tape. that tape is shedding new light on how her four daughters, ages 5 to 17 lived and how they might have died. for the first time she showed

real emotion. she cried as detectives showed her photos of her four girls. three of them in one room lying side by side, all of their heads turned to the right, the oldest girl was in another room on a hardwooden floor lying in her own blood. >> she claims her four girls died in their sleep, but detectives told her the medical examiner said they were murdered. the three youngest, asia, nakia and tatiana were strangled. the knife was found beside her. how did she get it an investigator asked? i gave it to her, jacks said. her death was brutal and physical. she didn't die peacefully. jack maintained her innocent. i can never hurt my kids, she said. i love children. i used to work with kids. and then she cried as they showed her family photos from happier times. jacks still refusing to admit

the girls suffered any pain at her hands. when they didn't wake up, why didn't you get help, the detective asked? because i knew this was going to happen. a lot of trouble for me, she said. >> and jacks is indeed facing a lot of trouble. she is facing 12 counts, including several counts of first-degree premid premeditated murder. he had to listen to all of the tapes. jacks attorneys are hoping it will not. that decision is still to come. >> thank you for that. now to a follow up on the death of a female sailor at fort meyer, virginia. her body was found yesterday after she failed to show up for an overnight shift. the criminal investigative service says it is still looking into the cause of the death. there's no indication of foul play that sailors name has not been released. >> just a short time ago, the

dc council approved a resolution authorizing the investigation into its best known and most controversial nebraska. the legislators appointed robert bennett to investigate the contracts that marion barry gave his girlfriend. barry sat down today in his home with our own, bruce johnson in this 9news now exclusive. >> councilman marion barry left his home today driving a new car with maryland tags. he says it's the rental that u.s. park police only recently returned his own car and cell phone following his arrest on july 4. >> they say they want to use it, they got a warrant to search my car and search my car for what? >> barry continued to blame police while dismissing any personal responsibility for his arrest. after he was stopped while following his exgirlfriend in a car with her ex-husband. > the blame aught to be on the

he was recently reelected, so he doesn't have to face voters in ward 8 and he might win if he did there. and he won't have to face the voters city wide. the rest of the city may be experiencing barry fatigue, but he doesn't have to face the rest of the city. >> bruce johnson, thank you. montgomery county is considering a proposal to cut in half the number of people that can live in a house or an apartment. officials say over crowding complaints in the county have doubled in the last six years. county rules prohibit more than five unrelated people to live in one home. but officials say that rule is easily skirted because residents just need to say they are related. springfield mall is out to get a major facelift. they uny imslouapproved a plan to develop the deteriorating mall. the -ae crarea will be rezoned into e multiuse town center with stores, offices, residences, or hotels, and a health club. >> another manhole cover went

flying in dc today. this time in the area around the -- or should i say it happened, there was a small explosion inside the manhole on the 600 block of e street. no one hurt, no one lost power. at ws are inveigating caused the incident. and 23rd and i street northwest is open again after being closed almost all day. there that is where repairs just opened up. this water main broke around 7:00 this morning. crews were able to keep the water from leaking. >> dc high school students put their tree climbing skills to the test today. the interns for casey trees climbed an oak tree. the summer internship teaching them about the environment. part of the program includes learning the professional and safe way to climb trees from experts. well, we do get to enjoy at least one more cool night before the weather starts heating up.

on wall street, stocks were higher for a second straight day. the dow finished the day up 27 points to close at 8359. the nasdaq rose 6 points and the s & p 500 climbed 4 points. the south west airlines is operating normally today after inspecting nearly 200 planes. those inspections ordered after a football sized hole opened up in the passenger cabin of a flight from gnashville to bwi marshal airport last night. here's drew with the latest. >> it's a frightening image captured on a passenger's cell phone. an explosion left a football sized hole in the rear cabin of a southwest airlines jet monday evening. >> it is hard for me to understand how a plane can just literally fall apart right above your head when you are

flying in it. we were a couple thousand feet up in the air when it started tearing apart. >> passengers put on oxygen masks that dropped from the ceiling. after the plane lost pressure. there were no immediate reports of injuries. from the 126 passengers and five crew members on board. but passenger john benson who shot this video says he was coughing up blood monday night and hivesoden loped severe hearing problems right after the incident. the jet made an emergency landing in charleston, west virginia. southwest airlines inspected more than 180 of its fleet tuesday. the same kind of plane involved here. the airline says all of the planes are safe. four months ago, southwest airlines agreed to pay more than $7 million to settle charges. that it flew planes that missed safety inspections. it is unclear what caused the plane to blow open. >> the national transportation safety review board will do a thorough examination as they do

with any aircraft incident. >> it could take months to figure out what led to this scary ride. >> cbs news. >> scary stuff indeed. one passenger described how she focused on keeping her kids calm. >> we were seated about two rows back from the wing and about four rows back, you heard this loud rush and your ears popped and then we looked back and you could tell that part of the inside was trying to pull out. and it was crazy and oxygen masks dropped and i put mine on, then put them on my kids and so it was just crazy. you are doing as a parent, you are doing a lot of talking and calming and that kind of thing and how you have never gone through this before. >> in fact, many thankful passengers say they applauded and hugged the pilot just for getting them down safely. nasa will try for a sixth time tomorrow to launch the

space shuttle endeavor. lightning at kennedy space center in florida scrubbed last night's launch minutes before blastoff. endeavor's mission to the international space station has been grounded for an entire month. the seven member crew will deliver the final segment of japan's $1 billion space lab. a frightening scene caught on video in germany. it shows a stunt plane losing control and then crashing into a car carrying a family of three. look at that. amazingly, no one was killed. not the pilot nor those three people. they all got out and had minor injuries. >> speaking of flying, this is a little less scary, i think. dogs and cats never had it quite so good. pampered pets have their own airline. pet airways began operating for the first time today with flights to new york, la, chicago, denver. they plan to add 25 more cities. the pets are in carriers in the

main cabin instead of the cargo hold and one way flights started only $149. there they are. happy. >> they are living the dream. how about that. >> i'm sure they get snacks. >> they are doing better than we are. we don't get snacks. >> you have to pay for them. fido doesn't have $5. >> maybe enough for a couple of sausages. >> all right, let's take a look at what's happening weather wise. tonight it's going to be another beautiful night. we are going to drop into the 40s and 50s again. by the time we get to tomorrow morning. that never happens this time of year. the next couple of days it's going to get warmer and humid. temperatures are going to climb to around 90. that's how it is supposed to be in the middle of july. mostly clear skies tonight, specifically we will get down to 53, 54 degrees in some of the colder suburbs. mid 50s for most of you. low to mid 60s in the city. if you are watching us in the

mountains, maybe up near the pennsylvania line, i wouldn't be surprised if some of you dipped into the 40s again by tomorrow morning. partly sunny skies tomorrow. the humidity will go up. most of the day on wednesday is going to be dry with a high temperature between 85 and 90. right now, we have a few high thin, whispy clouds showing up. we'll call it mostly clear and the air is very dry. check out this dew point, 40. that never happens. producing a relative humidity of 25%. that's kind of the stuff we get in the fall and winter around here. the temperatures will fall quickly after sunset because the skies are clear. while we are in the 80s at the present time. by the time we get to 9:00, 10:00, it will drop into the 70s. it will be in the 50s in most locations, it has been a brutal summer. we have been enjoying nice weather. the southern planes have been very hot and a chunk of that heat will slide towards us during the middle of the week. it's not going to be o

pressively hot, then this system will approach during the day on wednesday. most of wednesday will be dry, but there could be a thunderstorm late in the afternoon. sot forecast looks like this, a scattered shower or thunderstorm possible. the best chance for rain will be friday and saturday. we could really use some rain now. it's been a while since we had a good soaking rain event. hopefully friday and saturday, you'll get some at your house and the temperatures will fall back into the low to mid 80s for highs over the weekend. a couple of days with the heat and that's it. >> i can't believe we can save some of that rain up from may. >> the water tables are fine, but the front lawns are getting parched. >> we have breaking news to get to. sky 9 is over the scene of the potomac river south of old anglers. right now, water rescue teams are looking for a man who tried to swim across the river from maryland to the virginia side. we will continue to monitor this and bring you more details when we get them. president obama announced a

will be guided by the law and constitution if confirmed. and reviewed recordings of a police interview with jacks. she is on trial for allegedly murdering her four daughters. a judge will rule on whether or not the recordings are admissible as evidence before the testimony begins. authorities say the people who murdered a florida couple are now behind bars. those victims were wealthy and well known for adopting children with special ednes. investigators say the primary motive was robbery and some of them worked at the victims home. >> ashley was overcome with emotion as police announced they have the seven people responsible for her parents violent murder. >> we have found them and they

are in custody. >> the alleged ring leader, leanard gonzalez made his first appearance in court, charged with murdering melony, a couple known for adopting special needs children. police say the 35-year-old local marshal arts instructor organized a group that included maintenance workers and day laborers. one worked at the billings home. some had prior military experience. and one unidentified suspect is just 16 years old. >> the individuals that we have arrested for this crime are involved with other areas and other crimes. >> the couple was shot to death last thursday and police say the motive was a well planned home invasion robbery. it was caught on the family surveillance cameras installed to keep an eye on the kids. a safe was taken, but police would not reveal how the

robbery turned to murder. nine of the 16 children were home at the time of the attack, three witnessed it. >> the children are with family members. they are with a safe, loving, and secure environment. >> there may be one more involved in the case, they will all be charged with murder. karen brown, cbs news. >> that couple owned several local businesses, including a finance company and a used car dealership. they had 17 children, 13 of them adopted. >> two members of the virginia national guard was accused of distributing video of female soldiers taking showers. specialist matthew belong to a military police unit based in manassas, virginia. the alleged incident took place in new jersey before the unit was deployed to iraq last year. those soldiers face up to 18 years in prison. >> bernard madoff is on the move. a federal bureau of prison spokesperson said he is now at the federal prison in buttner,

north carolina. he was transferred there from an atlanta prison this morning. he was sentenced to 150 years in prison for bilking thousands of investors out of billions of dollars. a las vegas landmark has been tagged and the search is on for vandals who scribbled red marker on the famous sign that greets visitors. back on may 1, that sign was entered into the national register of historic places. the best small town to live in in the united states is lewisville, colorado. that according to money magazine. it ranked the nation's best towns with 50,000 residents or fewer and it describes the town on the northwest side of denver as family friendly with an historic downtown and good weather. five small towns ranked in the top 100. eldersburg, maryland in carol

letters, pictures, and plaques, all memories of his five-year coaching career at walkersville, high school. that career is now on hold for him and jr. varsity head coach, dan any cleveland because of a team party this summer. after leading his team to a 2a western region title, young invited his players and parents to his house. he says some of those parents brought beer and shared it with other adults. >> i didn't provide it, i didn't drink it, on the other hand, i did see some parents had it and it's a violation and i accepted responsibility. >> there's no question, alcohol was at the party. parents say it was for adults only and because it wasn't on school property, they didn't know they had broken any rules. >> i did have a drink, in fact, my husband and i brought some. so i would be the culprit. >> the school spokeswoman says his contract was not renewed because of the beer at the

party. a violation of the school's alcohol free school system. >> it's important to know neth sort of activity is unacceptable, she said in a phone interview today. many members of the team, including youngs own daughter said the punishment does not fit the crime. >> i really don't think there should be a punishment, actually. i mean, it was off season, post season, none of the minors were consuming it. it was completely hidden. i didn't notice it at all. >> he's really upset about it. coaching the high school team means the world to him. >> young declined to share this letter from the school on camera, but the punishment means he cannot coach for three years in frederick county. >> it is going to end my coaching career. >> i'm lindsey mastas, wusa9.com. >> young is appealing that decision, but he says it will be weeks before the superintendent meets with him. the school's spokeswoman says that coach danny cleveland has not appealed the decision. fairfax county is calling

we could call it mostly clear and with a dew point of only 43 degrees, the temperatures are going to fall off quickly after sunset. temperatures are only 25%. that's unbelievable for the middle of july. 82 in winchester. 85 in haggerstown. got some hot stuff off to our west. the southern planes have been boiling so far this summer and a chunk of heat will slide in during the middle of the week and this system that is producing showers and thunderstorms in the midwest will be the one that will give us our chance for the rain at the end of the week. tomorrow, high pressure is close enough to keep us dry for most of the week. seven-day forecast looks like this. rain wednesday and thursday, but the best chance for rain will be friday and saturday and again, i think we could use a little bit of rain. it's been two or three weeks, hopefully you will get rain at your house and look at the temperatures. we go from normal back into the low to mid 80s over the weekend. so our mild summer continues. i don't see any big heat wave

coaching, i would get to the point where they didn't understand the concept of dribbling the hockey ball. >> to help, emily added another title to her resume, inventor. >> i took an old concept that my high school coach used to use and putting a toilet paper roll down the stick and i kind of made it into a more permanent training device. >> she is now the creator of the dribble doctor. and the invention has kept emily's hands hard at work. physically crafting the tools of her trade. >> i have a belt sander and i sand down all the sticks by hand and turn them into dribble doctors. smoothing out the patent process wasn't as simple. >> it was long. it started about two years ago now. >> emily makes all of these sticks by hand and so far has sold about 150 of them.
