"this broadcast realtime captioned by becky lyon." >> right now a wounded woman and a whole world of trouble in one mclean neighborhood. 7700 block of fisher drive. digital correspondent andrew stack joining us live with the latest. >> reporter: derek, as of right now you can see that four blocks behind me are lined wall- to-wall with police vehicles and a short time ago they brought in several mobile batteries of flood lights. to neighbors it appeared as though the entire fairfax county police department had descended. >> quite a disturbance when the fire department and everybody else came by but what can you say, man? it is the times. >> reporter: a neighbor in this quiet mclean neighborhood heard a gunshot. what he saw next left him shocked. a woman shot in the head and laying in a front yard.

>> she is alive. unknown condition at this point. >> reporter: for hours police tried to make contact with the manholed up inside the home on the 7700 block of fisher drive but no luck. >> we have someone inside the house that we want very much to talk to and that's why our negotiators are on the scene and making every effort to get through to the person inside to come talk to us. >> reporter: so far that hasn't happened yet. they just set up the flood lights. is it will probably be a very long night of pressure for the person inside that house. >> so, andrew, sounds like a pretty convoluted situation. any information you can provide. >> reporter: the fairfax county police department does not want any bystanders to get injured or killed or hurt in any way. so they aren't releasing any more information at this point but we will keep you posted as we learn more. >> andrew stack. thank you for that one. here is a name you likely thought you would never he ar

those two trains crashed. today there was a hearing on the crash that killed nine people. the transit needs to get a brand-new track control immediately they have been told. >> we have contacted vendors. we have meetings scheduled tomorrow morning at my building to begin the process of developing the system. >> meantime operators will continue to run the trains manually until investigators can pin down the cause of the crash and metro can make all the necessary changes. a federal panel says the deadly trolley crash near boston last year could have been prevented if they had an automated transit control system. a trolley ran into another in massachusetts. today the same panel found that the operator may have fallen asleep. she had an undiagnosed sleep disorder. follow-up on that southwest airlines flight forced to make

an emergency landing in west virginia. we first told you about the hole the size of a football in the fuselage of flight 2294 last night at 11:00 p.m. tonight we are seeing some video from inside the plane. a passenger taped it with his cell phone. southwest airlines says this particular jet had eight cracks in its frame repaired after it was inspected back in january. today southwest inspected more than 180 of its other 737 jets and says all those planes are safe. despite those inspections a new problem for another southwest 737 today. flight 3238 flying from st. louis to orlando when pilots got a warning about a fire in the plane's auxilliary power unit. they made an emergency landing in orlando. no evidence was found of a fire, however. republicans trying to paint sonia sotomayer as someone who would bring a biased viewpoint to the beg but as it is reported today, she is fighting back. >> reporter: supreme court

nominee walking away unscathed after senators peppered her with questions for eight hours. >> judge, thank you very much. >> reporter: republicans were poised to ask her whether or not her past remarks indicate she has a racial bias. but democrats beat them to the punch giving her a chance to clear the air. >> here is your chance. you tell us what's going on here, judge. >> i do not believe that any ethnic, racial or gender group has an advantage in sound judging. >> reporter: she also fielded questions about her stand on the abortion rights case. she came close to calling the landmark decision settled law. >> the court's decision in planned parenthood re-affirmed the court holding of rowe. that is the precedence of the court and settled in terms of the holding of the court. >> reporter: there is little doubt that she will join the supreme court at the end of this process. the chairman of the committee

fireworks from the base of the washington monument. we will never see that. but the french are not afraid to go there. check out tonight's fireworks that turned the eiffel tower into a giant glowing ember. that is really something. tomorrow nasa hoping to put its own fireworks show on. weather permitting it will light the candle beneath the shuttle endeavour. endeavour will dock with the international space station and crew will offload and install the final section of the giant space laboratory. thunderstorms have been delaying the mission and they have done so three times. hydrogen gas leaks caused two other delays. >> hydrogen gas leaks and electricity not a good match. >> not at all. yesterday we talked about maybe why didn't they wait until the afternoon. because the earlier shots with the hydrogen gas leaks those were supposed to be in the morning. >> really? >> yes. >> derek and i were talking about why they didn't launch in

the morning, not in the afternoon with the thunderstorms. >> apparently it moves around. >> space station moves around and they have to time their launches accordingly. >> let's start with the three- day trend and we will get into the extended forecast in a second. it will get warmer next couple of days. going to feel like fall tonight but by tomorrow afternoon a little touch of summer. upper 80s to 90 on wednesday, thursday. mostly clear skies for the rest of tonight. like i said at the top of the hour we are going to come pretty close to breaking some record low temperatures by tomorrow morning. record low at vwi 57. low to mid-50s in the cooler suburbs. low to mid-60s in the city and near the water. during the day tomorrow partly sunny skies. humidity will slowly climb along with the temperatures and there there be a slight chance for a thunderstorm late in the afternoon. after about 4:00 p.m. i would only put a 30% mark on

it. high temperatures between 85 and 90. right now we have high thin clouds coming in from the west. mostly clear. the air is really dry. dew point top of the hour 46 degrees producing relative humidity of 49%. that hardly ever happens this time of the year. as you know the dew points are typically in the upper 60s and low 70s in the middle of july. the temperature already dropping to the low 60s in the western suburbs. 64 in winchester. mountains, cumberland, you could be in the 40s by tomorrow morning. still hot in the southern plains even at this late hour. 92 in dallas. little bit of that heat will slide over towards us the next couple days along with a couple of these thunderstorms firing up out in the plains states marching east bound as well. during the day tomorrow high pressure stopping at least briefly then a warm front will come through and that will bring in the warmer and more humid air mass. increasing the chances for rain. i know a lot of you are rooting

and now 9sports with sara walsh. the best sports in town. being selected to baseball's all-star team is a huge honor but not being picked isn't so bad either considering the rest of the players getting to on a mini vacation. it is being cut short by the nationals new manager. calling a 6:00 p.m. practice tomorrow at nationals park. first time he addresses the media in his new role opening a four-game set thursday evening with the chicago cubs. the transition should be smooth it was pointed out. >> as a bench coach he has been great. very positive and optimistic. we have guys that maybe weren't were this organization wouldn't be getting the opportunities

debut this evening after playing three matches on the road. jason campbell at the venue to take it in. serena williams playing in mixed doubles and winning that with her partner. playing a singles match and women's double match. all of her matches ended in victory. they will be home again on thursday. congratulations in order for the mystics player named as a starter on the wnba all-star team. her fourth selection but this time she has been voted in as a starter. she is averaging a little over 19 points a game. the all-star game is july 25th. golf. if i had to list everything tiger woods has accomplished already in his career i would be here until tomorrow evening's sportscast. so narrow down the things he hasn't done and that is playing at turn berry. won the british open before. three times in fact with the last in 2007. never done it on this course.

many things can go wrong on a wedding day but more brides are worried about the caters screwing up or flowers not getting there. the couple thought it would be a good idea to modify the whole tradition of bouquet toss. the flowers would be thrown from a small plane. the problem is it ended up caught in the plane's rear rotor jamming the engine. the plane crashed. the smartest decision in this whole scheme the bride and groom did not get on the plane. unfortunately there was a person who threw the bouquet
