began last night. 9 news now digital correspondent armando trull is live in mclean with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, andrea. that standoff is now in the tenth hour. there are fairfax county police officers, maryland police officers s.w.a.t. teams and negotiator and with us is lucy she is with the fairfax police department. can you tell us what transpired? >> the police are trying to bring about a peaceful resolution. we are trying to have a conversation with a person of interest with an investigation in regard to a shooting that occurred last evening. >> we understand a woman was shot last night and you are trying to interview someone inside the home about that shooting. are you -- do you know what the relationship is between the person who was shot? >> reporter: we know there was a relationship and they knew one another. we're not elaborating further on that, but certainly are

hoping to speak with the person inside to have a conversation and at this point have not been able to. we will continue to try. >> reporter: is there anyone in the home besides the person you are trying to speak to? >> there are other people in the home and certainly they are okay at this point. and we are trying to communicate certainly with people inside the home. we have been in communication with neighbors and people throughout the neighborhood. so we have a plan in place for people to get to work today and this situation will continue until we have discussions with the individuals. >> reporter: we understand no shots have been fired inside the home. there's nothing to indicate that anyone in the home is in danger. >> exactly. we can't say there is anything that has happened in the home throughout the evening or this morning that reveals that to us. all we can say is we'd like to have a conversation and we are continuing to take steps to

make that happen. >> reporter: thank you very much. that's the latest on ten-hour standoff in mclean. armando trull for 9 news now and wusa9.com. judge sonia sotomayor will return for a second full day of questioning today before the senate judiciary committee. tuesday she rejected republican allegations that she would bring bias if confirmedded as the first hispanic the supreme court. judge sonia sotomayor fielded questions about her stand on the abortion rights case roe v. wade. she stopped sort of calling abortion sethleed law. health care reform will get top billing as the president and congress and many try to lobby to put their stamp on the health insurance system. house democrats unveiled sweeping legislation on tuesday. president obama wants the house and senate to vote on health reform bills before the august recess. the color-coded system designed to assess the risk of a terrorist attack could be

fading away. homeland security secretary janet napolitano announced the 60-day review of the five tier system. she says she wants to be sure it is the most effective alert system for the nation. the current system uses green to signal a low danger of an attack and red is severe danger of an attack. right now it is at code yellow for elevated. the only person to stand trial for the september 11th terrorist attacks will get another shot to make his case in the appeals court. the court of appeals ordered new arguments in the case after one of the judges that heard the case retired for health reasons. federal crash investigators say the signal system on metro's red line continues to fail from time to time along a section of the red line where two trains crashed last month. yesterday congress held a hearing in to the crash which killed nine people and the head of metro says the transit agency needs to get electronic

seng surged 2% after a modest rally on wall street yesterday. the dow rose 27 and the nasdaq up 6 and the s&p by four. investors will continue to study earnings at major banks for signs the financial system has stablized. bank of america and citigroup will post results this week. each received $45 billion federal aid. yesterday goldman sax posted record profits after losing $4 billion less than a year ago. it made that money by taking risks while other banks didn't. the president reiterated that unemployment is likely to take up to several months as the economy recovers can. 2million jobs have been lost since congress passed the stimulus package. the unemployment rate is 2.5%, the highest rate in 26 years but on the upside the washington region's unemployment rate is 3% points below the national average and we have the best job market out

the tarmac. it would require planes delayed more than three hours to return to the gate to give passengers the opportunity to guess embark. passenger rights advocates hail the idea which is opposed by the airline industry and airports. crews recovered the body of a third and final person missing after a weekend mudslide in utah. the 13-year-old was found in the rubble and debris of his home which was buried in parts under 20 feet of mud. the bodies of his mother and sister were recovered earlier in the day. this evening the space shuttle "endeavor" will try for a fifth time to lift off on a mission to the international space station. a hydrogen leak and bad weather have kept the shuttle grounded since june. nasa forecasters say there is a 60% chance the weather will cooperate but if they have to scrub the launch again astronauts will have to wait until the end of the month. a map highlighting the rate of unemployment around the

why smokers maybe at a greater risk for diabetes. researchers say the nicotine in cigarettes increases a smoker's resistance to insulin. the condition is called prediabetes and they hope the findings will lead to the development of drugs that specifically block the affects of insulin resistance. according to a new report, fewer americans are driving drunk. the survey found in 2007 the number of drunk drivers was down 71% from the mid-'70s. researchers credit tougher laws, tighter enforcement and a shift in social attitude for the dramatic decrease. we say good morning to kristin fisher. she's showing us what is hot on the web today. good morning. >> that's right. yesterday president obama delivered a speech on the economy and one of the states hit hardest by the recession, michigan. between gm and chrysler's bankruptcy the unemployment rate in michigan is 13% and jessica doyle was talking about that a little earlier this

morning. but a new story out today in the new york times says that number, the unemployment rate, maybe misleading for michigan and other states across the country like maryland and virginia. here's the story i'm talking about. part-time workers, mass unemployment woes. it argues the unemployment rate excludes all of the people who have given up looking for a job and those part-time workers who want to be g wofainrkfull time. when you take those groups in to the equation you get the broadest measure of the job market and under that definition, some states have unemployment rates that inare higher than 20%. nore t heason the story is hot on the web this morning is because of this new york times interactive graphic showing that broader definition of unemployment in america. i want to just zoom in and show you what we are looking at right now. look at the map. the states in the dark purple, california, oregon, michigan. those are the states with the

out so we can have a discussion and bring this to a closure. >> reporter: the reason you want to speak to this man, as i understand there was a shooting yesterday 6:30, 7 p.m. a woman was shot and maybe a relationship between a man inside the home and the woman who was shot and you want to see if he was linked to what shooting. >> exactly. we don't believe this was a random incident. there was a shooting that occurred last evening. the woman is still in the hospital and they apparently did know one another and then this individual ran in to this particular home and had not come out since. we have not spoken with him and we are continuing to try and continuing throughout the day and making preparations for the police to be here for some time dollar. >> the reason you are being so careful and so basically safety conscious is because there are people inside the home besides him, is that correct? >> that's correct. there are people inside the home and certainly we want to make sure that nothing else

happens and we go ahead and bring it to an end. we have been communicating with neighbors, certainly people who need to get to work and get out of the neighborhood throughout the day because we have the roads closed here in this neighborhood. we are working to make sure they get where they need to go peacefully. >> thank you very much. that's the situation here in mclean. and you heard police are willing to wait as long as it takes to make sure the standoff ends peacefully. >> fairfax county wants the district to crackdown on under- aged drinking. the fairfax county oversight committee says teenagers are crossing the potomac river to get drunk in dc because there are no criminal penalties for under-aged drinking. the oversight committee wants the board of supervisors to put pressure on the quarterback government to make it an enforcible crime. two popular coaches have been terminated for violating the school's alcohol policy.

brad young says some parents brought and drank beer at his home. some parents say it wasn't on school property so they didn't know it was against the rules. for the next three years young is prohinted from coaching any sport in frederick county. >> we don't think there should be a punishment actually. it was off season, postseason, none of the minors were consuming it. it was hidden. i didn't notice it at all. >> i did have a drink. i have would have never in a million years done anything to jeopardize brad's job. >> reporter: the school spokeswoman says young's contract was not renew because of a violation of the school's alcohol-free school system. young appealed the decision. the other coach has not and declined to be interviewed. it is time for another living smart report and digital correspondent jessica doyle is back with more financial turbulence for one major

airline. >> these are really tough times for the airlines and they have done a lot of thing. they have cut flights and added fees but not enough for u.s. airways so the company is laying off 600 ground workers this fall and is asking 400 flight attendants to take voluntary furloughs to avoid layoffs in that group and shutting down services. major carriers are expected to report another round of losses due to the soft economy bebin -- beginning with american airlines later today. the washington county commissioners voted to buy 18- acres of farmland west of the airport at a price tag of just over $500,000. they will pay 95% of the price for the protection zone required by the faa. time for the money saving tip of the day. are you shy about haggling, don't be, and ya. it can save you a t of money. consumer reports found 10% of

welcome back to 9 news now. today is payday for 18,000 young people in dc taking part in the summer jobs program. mayor fenty joined some of those young worker at fort dupont park. he was there to pitch the program but did some pitching in pulling weeds and invasive plants and he let his services director give good news about payday. >> every two weeks a pay period and this is the first full pay period for the youth. they are paid minimum wage, 6.55 an hour and goes up to 7.25 and they will get the raise for their hard work. >> the upper jobs program helps put youths to work. the face of the washington radio dial is changing again. wjfk fm is switching to all sports. it will be known as 106.7 the

beach. get this. it is a 26-foot long, 5,000- pound shark. the shark was dead when it washed ashore and even then it wouldn't have been a threat to humans likely because they feed on blank tin and small fish but look at that guy. you can see some beach goers getting their pictures snapped with the monster shark but i don't know, i don't care what that sharkdoat s i t n'want it near me. now, this is, you know, clearly -- the shark wouldn't normally hurt people but anytime there is a srerkt he w you don't see a ton of sharks it gets people talking. officials are trying to determine the cause of death of the shark. moving on, vandals hit the famous, fabulous las vegas sign and images are all over the web. this story broke two days ago on monday but it really gained a lot of attraction over the past 48 hours on the social
