we will begin with an amber alert for a missing child in virginia. virginia state police say 1- year-old naomi was in a minivan that was somen a few hours ago in virginia beach. police have identified matthew nash as the suspect. according to police, the little girl's mother was pumping gas at a 7-eleven at 9:30 this morning when nash got in the car and drove away. naomi was still in her car seat. now, the vehicle has been described as a honda odyssey with florida tags. hashem 2. the color is either green or gray. anyone with information should call 911. we are also following another developing story that started last night. police in fairfax county, they

are involved in a standoff with a person inside. we first brought you the story on wusa wusa9.com at 11:00 last night. the house is located in the 0077block of fisher dre 00in mclean, virginia. and that's where we are joined live with more information. >> police are not releasing a lot of information, even 18 hours in to the standoff. right here on garr court you can see the areas blocked off. the media van to my side is family. people involved in the people inside the house. they are here to find out how they can help but did not want to go on camera at this hour. right next to it is the mobile command center and just beyond there is where the house is on lyle avenue. that's where police are concentrating their efforts. now, police say they have been in contact with people inside the home, but won't go any further in to their conversations. this all began at 6:30 last

night. police say the manholed up inside the home was involved in a domestic issue in connection with a shooting. a woman was shot in the face in the 7700 block of fisher drive. police are not releasing her condition. the man is now a block away inside of a home on lyle avenue in the neighborhood in mclean. there are others inside of the home, but police are not releasing how many people are inside but they are okay. police say everyone involved in this incident knows each other and though they will not talk about progress being made they are talking with people inside the home and would like to talk to the man inside further. >> communicate with him and the people in the home to try to explain that we just want to have a conversation and just try to listen to him and listen to his story and to see what happened and what's going on. right now at this hour police are continuing to try to communicate with the people in the home. police are here for the long

hole in a nearby farmland. charlie d'agata has more information on this story. >> reporter: a smoking crater and a trail of wreckage are all that is left of the caspian airline plane that crashed in northwest iran. 169 people were killed when the plane smashed in to a farm field. >> the aircraft all of a sudden fell out of the sky and exploded on impact. >> reporter: the russian-made jet was heading from teheran to the capital of armenia when it went down 16 minutes after takeoff. investigators aren't sure what caused the crash. witnesses say the plane's tail was on fire and the pilot seemed to be looking for a place to land. the fire chief said the scope of the disaster is very wide with debris scattered everywhere. most of the passengers reportedly are armenia but eight members of iran's youth judo team are among the dead. iran has frequent air crashes

because many planes are old and poorly maintained. iran's government blames the government on u.s. sanctions that prevent iran for getting spare parts for some planes but caspian airlines uses russian made aircraft like this one let affected by american sanctions. world wide, this is the third major airliner disaster in less than two months. bringing the year's death toll to 500. charlie d'agata, cbs news. this crash is the 8th fatal accident suffered by the same model of plane in the past ten years. well, federal crash investigators say the signal system on metro's red line continues to fail from time to time. along a section of the red line where two trains crashed last month. yesterday congress held a hearing in to the crash that killed nine people. the head of metro says the transit agency needs to get new

electronic track controls immediately. >> already contacted vendors. we have meetings scheduled tomorrow morning in my building to begin the process of developing the system. >> reporter: john catoe says metro operators will continue to run trains manually until investigators pin down the cause of the crash and metro can make the necessary changes. the color-coded system designed to access dc -- assess the risk of a terrorist attack could be fading away. homeland security secretary fap nap announced a 60-day review of the five-tier system. she says she wants to be sure it is the most effective alert system for the nation. the current system uses green to signal a low danger of attack. while red warns of a severe threat. right now the nation is a code yellow for elevated. crime is down in prince georges county. county leaders credit better enforcement and joint efforts

by axes. so far this year, violent crime is down nearly 10% compared to last year. that includes a 16% drop in murders. 14% drop in rape and 15% drop in property crime. montgomery county judge has thrown out speeding tickets issued to four county police officers. automated cameras snapped pictures of the officers ' cruisers exceeding the speed limit while on duty. the circuit court judge ruled the officers have a right to due process and had been violated because the police department does not have a written policy outlining when on-duty officers are exempt from speed camera tickets. attorney says speeding is a regular part of an officer's job and they should not be expected to remember why they were speeding weeks or months later. the county may appeal. president obama's choice

for the supreme court is on captiol hill again for the third day judge sonia sotomayor is answering tough questions from republicans but so far it is not given much ground. >> reporter: sonia sotomayor remained cool under fire as she returned for another day of intense questioning on captiol hill. >> on all issues i follow the law. >> reporter: it is the third day of confirmation hearings for sonia sotomayor but the subject remains the same. republican senators asked her what she meant when she said in a speech that a wise latina woman would reach a better conclusion than a male. >> you indicated if -- that this is really and please correct me if i am wrong, i am trying to repeat your words a rhetorical flourish that fell flat. >> it fell flat. i understand that some people have understood them in a way i never intended. >> reporter: back on the agenda
