"this broadcast realtime captioned by becky lyon." >> we have reporters following both big stories tonight. >> we begin with digital correspondent andrew stack live in mclean with an update on that standoff you first saw last night on 9news now at 11:00 p.m. >> reporter: anita, it did take almost exactly 24 hours for this standoff to reach a resolution. the initial 911 call came last night from a neighbor who heard a gunshot. when police arrived they found a woman face down in a yard and she had been shot in the head. now, within minutes they tracked her former boyfriend to a nearby home where he was

holed up with their 8-year-old son and another woman. after a day of waiting and repeated negotiation attempts. >> they forced entry into the home locating a man, woman and child inside and the woman and child are okay, they are unharmed. >> reporter: hank's 8-year-old son and the woman accompanying him were both in the house through the entire ordeal. but even earlier this evening he didn't want to come out. when it was obvious they were coming to get him police say hank turned the gun on himself. >> the son came out and then they dragged the body of the man out. >> reporter: 14-year-old garrett johnson and his cousin chris saw the entire ordeal from just feet away. >> the cops breaking the doors in. the german shepherds go in. guy yelling. everything. everybody was standing back

wondering what was happening. >> how close were you? >> i'd say 100 feet. >> reporter: police reported he had died but paramedics stabilized the man. fairfax police are confirming last night's shooting was precipitated by a domestic argument over who would get custody of their 8-year-old son. tonight that 8-year-old boy, both his parents are in critical condition at the hospital. andrew stack, 9news now and wusa9.com. >> thank you. another developing story that broke during rush hour. this one began with police pulling over a man who turned out to be armed and dangerous. this all happened at the intersection of new jersey avenue and c streets nortwe st just blocks fr omthe u.s. capital and union station. britney moorehouse talking to the police. >> reporter: street vendors described what they heard near this crash scene. they say it all began with one mercedes speeding towards the capital with sirens in toe. >> they pulled into union

station and chased them to the capital. >> a lot of people running this way and i got on this side. >> they had a security thing there and said stop. >> the vehicle struck one of our police officers. that's when officials say the man in the mercedes drove the long way on louisiana avenue and was stopped by several more officers. >> at that point the officers noticed the suspect had a weapon. >> reporter: capital police say they told him to drop it and the driver didn't. >> i heard a lot of pow-pow pow- pow. >> reporter: officers shot the 35-year-old man dead. >> it was like a movie or something like that. never saw that before. >> reporter: for tourists in the area this is quite an unexpected attraction. >> just had cops around the cars. that's when i started thinking what's going on? >> with so many police cars they just kind of -- you only see that in movies. >> reporter: some visitors are staying in hotels blocks away. >> because i thought it was

unusual. >> you realize why there is security all offer the place now a days. >> i'm upset that people are acting so crazy and no regard for human life. not good. >> reporter: britney moorehouse, 9news now and wusa9.com. >> the license plate on that white mercedes is a temporary virginia tag. two capital police officers were treated for minor injuries. police are warning women to be aware of their surroundings e w w and od trail. this morning a woman was attacked on the trail. this is near the bridge to north side park. police say a man road toward the woman on a bike, stopped and exposed himself. when she started to run past him he grabbed her, threw her to the ground and stood over her yelling. now, the woman was able to escape and call police. anyone who witnessed this attack is asked to call authorities right away. an unexpected shock today for the 58 public charter schools in dc. the city missed a $100 million payment. now, that money the school has been counting on to get ready

for the school year and it also means some teachers may not get paid this week. gary neurenburg reporting. >> reporter: they expected 28,000 kids in the coming school year. >> as soon as the bell rang the school doors open and crowds of students came pouring out of the building. >> reporter: dc's charter schools are run by private enterprises that promise results for the money. like the latin american bilingual school they have specialized programs that offer alternatives to traditional public schools. they were expecting $100 million in city monday wednesday but didn't get it. dc city council kwame brown has two kids in the school and is furious some teachers may not be paid this week. >> i don't believe it. i don't think it is one resident in the district of columbia believes that the city doesn't have any money and has

not been budgeted to pay teachers. if that's the case that is an absolute disgrace of the city. we should all be appalled by it. >> we expect to have it resolved by friday. >> reporter: chairman of the public charter school board saying money can bridge the gap so teachers will be paid. >> we think we have averted a financial crisis for all schools and it will be a matter of days not a matter of weeks or months. >> reporter: and the kids? >> financially the schools that are planning to open should be able to open on time. >> reporter: as with so much in city government this is complicated. budgets begins in july. the city has a budget that begins in october. the mayor is expected to submit a thank you budget tomorrow. and if all these budgets issues are cleared charters should be getting a big chunk of money within days. >> thank you for planing it.

gary neurenberg. ♪[ music ] friends and family gathered at north west high school in german town tonight to remember edwin deck miller. he collapsed during a summer practice last week and died four days later. still don't know why. more pain for commuters on the train. metro's tacoma station will be closed for five hours tomorrow as investigators try to figure out exactly what caused last month's deadly red line crash. the national transportation board planning to run tests on the tracks between the tacoma and fort totan stations. scheduled to run from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. tomorrow and then from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on saturday. metro will not be running trains between those portions. get ready for a new traffic pattern if you travel the

beltway near the wilsonfabridge part of the reconstruction project, the right lane of the outer loop in alexandria will be diverted to the connector. you can stay a step ahead of any detours and delays at wusa9.com. just click on traffic. aaa is asking virginia governor tim kaine to rethink his decision to close 19 interstate rest areas. he says those closings could save the commonwealth $9 million a year at a time when every dollar counts but aaa says no rest areas could translate into driver fatigue and that might mean nor accidents. governor tim kaine and top virginia state lawmakers want wal-mart to do some rethinking. they are asking the retailer to find some other site for a

supercenter. locus grove. that's where two genels first met in battle. the orange county supervisors have not yet signed off on that location. a follow-up now. mode of transportation growing popular among tourists on the mall. dc officials promised to create some rules for regulating them. dc attorney general peter nicols took action after watching our report about safety concerns earlier this week. >> but i've directed our people to look at best practices, looking particular at new york, philadelphia, other surrounding jurisdictions. >> he says by early next week he does plan to sign it to consumer and regulatory affairs. a mess. take a look at this scene live.

overpass collapsed after a gasoline tanker and a tractor trailer collided. it happened two and a half hours ago. several other vehicles were involved in that crash. so far though somehow only one minor injury reported. but the driver of the tanker truck is still unaccounted for. witnesses say at one point smokes and flames were climbing 200 feet in the area. another gorgeous day. not a rain cloud in sight but, tony, will that change anytime soon? >> yeah, a little bit of rain in the forecast heading towards the weekend. that's not necessarily bad news. it's been pretty dry around here for the last couple weeks and i think a lot of people would welcome that mtot toit is lytie ceor d.hu inhuno ol as the as st la lecoof nights. temperatures in the 70s generally now. 77 degrees downtown. under partly to mostly cloudy skies. it will stay dry for the rest of tonight. don't expect any trouble for the morning commute but it won't be as nice when you wake up. temperatures in the 60s to around 70 as opposed to 50s and

40 years ago tonight buzz, neil armstrong and michael collins had their sights set on the moon. apollo 11, july 16, 1969. four days later they became the first men on the moon. tonight a look back at some things you might not know about that moon landing. for example, popular science says armstrong's small step, not really that small. in fact, it was actually about 3.5 feet from the last rung on that ladder to the service. once he was joined they had to make sure they didn't get locked out of the lunar landing. there was no door handle on the outside and that flag that armstrong and aldran placed on the lunar service, it came from sears. click on our moon landing memories button on our home page to get the history details. all right. fast forward to now. after a month of delays space

shuttle endeavour is in orbit but the success of tonight's launch has been dampened a bit. nasa says foam insulation hit the orbiter during launch. engineers say some possible scuff marks appear to be minor but the ground crew and shuttle crew will conduct a close inspection of where the foam hit. students at space camp in baltimore might wind up astronauts of the future. today veteran astronaut donald thomas talked to a group of sixth and seventh graders. one topic the kids love, handling food in space. >> ever hear don't play with your food? this is like a 40-year-old man here playing with food. we are conducting science experiments. you can blow on that blob and you can get it kind of moving back and forth and you can get it spinning. blow bubbles into it. pretty cool science experiments. >> sounds cool to me. i'm ready to go to space camp. what do you think?

ready. >> no doubt. >> looks fun. >> i thought it was hilarious talking about being careful not to get locked out. >> can you imagine what would happen if they had if. >> we can't get in. >> nasa, there is a problem. >> we don't have a neighbor to go to for an extra key. >> can't get back. >> very funny. >> weather wise for us. good stuff coming up as we head into the weekend. temperature wise again our mild summer is going to continue. we will get a little brief shot of heat i think tomorrow then after that right back into the low 80s. start with the three-day trend first. i know you are rooting for rain to come in here. we might be able to accommodate that but unfortunately the best chance for rain will be as we go into the beginning of the weekend but there could be a little bit around during the day tomorrow. for the rest of tonight it won't be as comfortable as the last couple of nights. still not bad for this time of the year but instandard of dropping into the 50s we will be in the upper 60s to around 70 with a south wind at 10 to 15. during the day tomorrow mixture of sunshine and clouds.

30% chance for a shower or thunderstorm. some will get rain. that means there is a 60 or 70% chance that most of you will not. the high temperatures upper 80s to around 90. i think the morning commute is going to be just fine. so don't worry about precipitation early in the morning because there is nothing going on here right now. just some high thin clouds. super impose the radar on top of that. you can see we are on a clean sweep here. no concerns about precipitation for us going into tomorrow morning. 77 degrees top of the hour national airport. dew point has gone up. last night at this time the dew points were in the upper 40s and low 50s. right now back into the 60s and they will continue to climb i think during the day tomorrow. 79 degrees in culpepper . 74 at vwi. 76 at the naval air station. everybody will settle into the 60s tonight. heat off to our southwest and the flow is coming from that direction. so that's why we bumped the temperatures up a little bit tomorrow. you can see some activity upstream as well as far as thunderstorms go. we will see a few of those

during the day tomorrow as this front comes through then again our best chance for rain will come in friday night and saturday morning. there will be an area of low pressure developing on that same front. the temperatures will fall off. highs expected only in the low 80s on saturday and sunday and no 90s still in the seven-day forecast. we are in the middle of july. hottest part of the year. and not one 90 in our seven-day forecast. still good in that respect. >> thanks a lot. nats breaking in a new manager or is he breaking them in? >> maybe a little bit of both. >> somebody has got to take the fall for it when the team doesn't play well. the new man on the team. we will introduce you him. ravens. how much and for how long next in sports.
