. this is 9news now. >> two off duty police officers and a 12-year-old girl caught in a crossfire with a suspect inpr ince george's county. >> it all happened in greenbelt just after 7:00 tonight. digital correspondent p brittany morehouse was one of the -- brittany morehouse was one of the first on the scene and she's still there. >> reporter: investigators are still working this scene. here is what we can tell you. one fort myers policeman was banged up. one capitol policeman was shot and a 12-year-old girl was grazed by a bullet. >> i heard like shots so i came running outside. >> there was 7 or 8 shots. >> like 12 or 15 shots. >> reporter: so many and so loud people nearby thought the gunfire was a post 4th of july party. >> boom, boom, boom. i thought it was a firecracker. >> reporter: now neighbors know three people were shot,

including a 12-year-old girl. it began with a fight inside of an apartment between a fort meyer policeman and his roommate. the officer then left the building. >> at that point the roommate was able to locate the officer's off duty weapon and subsequently ran out into the parking lot and began randomly firing the weapon. >> reporter: that's when officials say an op duty capitol policeman pulled up in this dodge truck. he happened to be coming into this complex at the same time. police say he saw the roommate shooting. >> at that point the off duty united states capitol police officer engaged the suspect in an exchange of gunfire. >> reporter: in that exchange, a stray bullet went into a nearby apartment hitting a 12-year-old girl. >> the suspect's injuries appear to be serious. >> reporter: while many neighbor's nerves are on edge. >> it could be where i live at. >> it's kind of crazy. scared. me and my family live right

war in iraq over to iraqis. but how exactly will that work? andrew stack sat down with a colonel just back from the war to hear what needs to be done. andrew. >> i don't think that anybody should assume that this is going to be an on/off switch where one day we're helping the iraqis and the next day we're going to be able to walk away. >> reporter: jerry watson says the withdrawal of american troops from iraqi city three weeks ago was necessary but could pose some unintended hazards. >> the security agreement, in effect, puts american military under the watchful eye of the iraqi government. >> reporter: some fear u.s. soldiers would not be allowed to engage attackers without first clear ting through iraq -- clearing it through iraqi authorities. this simply isn't the case. >> people need to realize there is no military commander that is going to put his troops in a

are having some close encounters out in california. thousands of jumbo squid, like that one you see there, are invading the shallow waters off san diego. that one washed ashore sunday. they have been known to attack people and divers have reported tentacles grabbing at their air tanks. so far nobody hurt. and on the east coast, empty oyster shells get a little attention. for are years now maryland has been using the shells for a base for new oyster bars. the hope is that the new ois sisters will -- oysters will latch on to the old ones. they're meeting with some opposition now. >> this is a major source of oyster shell that's critically needed to help restore the ecological function of oysters. >> we don't need to try to create one elsewhere. >> they said dredging where the river meets the bay will destroy

this is, by far, the warmiest day of the summer so far. and the summer trend is going to continue into the weekend where the heat doesn't stick around very long. it's going to be warm tomorrow but not as warm as today. by the time we get to saturday and sunday, we're going to drop off into the low 80s. and a decent chance for rain coming up on friday night. i know a lot of are you rooting for that. partly cloudy skies for the rest of tonight. 20 or 30% chance for a shower or thunderstorm. i don't think you have to worry about any rain for the morning commute. low temperatures in the 60s. during the day tomorrow, a chance for showers or thunderstorms. but that will be most likely late in the day. if you have stuff planned in the morning or early afternoon, it should be all right. after about 4:00 or 5:00, the storms should start to come in. high temperatures upper 80s to around 90 degrees. here is the weather setup right now. we had a cold front go through about an hour ago. there is winds shifting and air starting to work its way in from the west. it's trying to get a couple of storms. there's really not much out

there at the present time. only a 20 or 30% chance you're going to run into something and we're seeing a few storms up there in the northern part of the county. but that's about it. let's switch it over and take a look at the temperatures. we're still in the low 80s. it's 81 downtown with a southwest wind at seven. other temperatures dropping off in the 70s. 75 in winchester at the top of hour. there is some cooler air sliding in here. but before that happens, an area of low pressure is going to develop on the front tomorrow evening and that's why we put the rain in the forecast on friday night. i think that will get out of here by the time we get to the beginning of the weekend, but that front is going to stall around the coast. so we're going to keep a slight chance for a shower or thunderstorm on saturday or sunday. i do think most of the weekend will be dry. the best chance for rain friday night and then temperatures are stay in the 80s. >> so we shouldn't worry about the lightning bolts? >> friday night is the time we're going to get the rain.
