finally let's ride it out with the maps. 95 and the bw parkway, going to find lanes wide open. over to andrea. we continue to follow breaking news involving pope benedict xvi. the pontiff is hospitalized this morning after breaking his wrist. this is video of his meeting last week with president obama in italy. the pope slipped early this morning while on vacation in the italian alps. a spokesman said it doesn't appear to be a serious injury. he will be kept for observation for a few hour and should be able to get back to his vacation. at one past the hour, police in portion county are looking for answers in a shooting that left a 12-year- old girl and two off-duty police officers hurt. it happened at an apartment complex on greenbelt road. armando trull has more on the story. >> reporter: residents tell us that the scene looked like something from the wild wild west and they are counting

their lucky stars the toll was not higher. >> boom boom boom like six times. i thought it was a firecracker. >> reporter: but it wasn't a post 4th of july celebration but a wild shootout in this greenbelt apartment building and left three people hurt including a 12-year-old girl who was grazed by one of the bullets. everything began when two roommates one a military policeman from ft. myer began to fight inside of their apartment. during the scuffle the pair crashed through a window to the parking lot. the suspect then went back in the apartment building. >> the roommate was able to locate the officer's off duty weapon and subsequently ran out in to the parking lot and began to randomly fire the weapon. >> reporter: an off-duty capitol policeman who was driving by in this truck saw the suspect. >> at that point the off-duty united states capitol police officer engaged the suspect in an exchange of gun fire. >> reporter: the suspect was seriously wounded in the

exchange. the u.s. capitol police officer was slightly wounded. andrea, at this point, prince georges county police and the state's attorney's office are trying to determine who will be charged in this case and what chose charges will be. reporting live, triewl trool for 9 news now and wusa9.com. >> the man involved in this week's standoff in mclean, virginia has died. police say 44-year-old john valentinny shot himself. and his exgirlfriend and she is hospitalized in grave condition. a developing story we have been tracking overnight for you. the president of indonesia vows to arrest the terrorists involved in the bombing of two hotels. at least nine people died in the twin attacks and 50 others were hurt including at least one american. a j.w. marriott and ritz carlton hotel were each hit. police confirm the suspect bombers were guests in one of

the hotels. president obama sighs the work of civil rights advocates in the ' 50s helped him to get where he is today. he spoke last night to the naacp which is celebrating the 100th anniversary he said while discrimination is fading it is still being felt. >> african-american women are paid less than people doing the same work than colleagues of a different gender and color. latinos are made to feel unwelcome but muslim americans viewed with suspicion because they kneel down to pray to their god by our gay brothers and sisters still taunted, still attacked and still denied their rights. >> the speech marked the 45th anniversary of the civil rights act. the district maybe ready to cut more jobs. the goal is to make financial ends meet. thursday mayor fenty announced a plan to close a $453 million

budget gap. he plans to use $125 million from the rainy day fund and cut additional 250 city jobs on top of 1600 job cuts already in the works. >> although it is 250 jobs it is probably not going to even register in most agencies at all. certainly will not register in the service delivery that residents expect from the government. >> those city employees will receive pink slips on october 1st. time for the "living $mart" report and jessica doyle is here and has good news for the local job markets. >> things could be a lot worse. today we are getting the washington region's unemployment figures for june and in the meantime a report finds dc is among the top ten cities in the country for finding a job right now.

going inside the numbers. 30,300 jobs have been lost in the past year and dc added 19,900 other jobs greatly due to the new administration coming to town and dc boasts the highest number of business and professional services jobs add ated at 11,000 so far this year. small and medium business leader cit is closer to bankruptcy. it is running out of cash and the government is refusing to bail out the company. it received $2 billion in federal aid in december. the "wall street journal" reports that a group of debt holders are considering their own rescue package for cit. well, a lot of people love to hang out at apple stores playing with the gadgets and drinking in the tech ambience and soon shoppers can stroll through a microsoft store. the computer giant plans to open retail stores beginning this fall. they recently launched microsoft's retail outlets to

showcase the latest technology and the opening coincides with major product launches like the windows 7 operating zoom and zune media players due out soon. this will take the microsoft apple rifery to a new level. >> interesting to watch. when you hold what is billed as the federal biggest job fair ever you will get a crowd and this was the scene at the national building museum. but the partnership for public service says getting a job from uncle sam isn't always easy. >> unfortunately the federal hiring process is an obstacle course. it takes too long. it is difficult to understand what you need to do and it is not transparent meaning you don't know where you are in the process. >> reporter: here's a warning, some websites offer to submit your resume to dozens of federal agencies each year for a fee but that could be a scam. you can find free listings for federal jobs at wusa9.com. our time after the hour.

welcome back to 9 news now. america is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing and nasa is releasing restored video of the 1969 moon walk. look at the video. nasa is showing how it touched up the video so we are getting a clearer look at the moment. 15 scenes have been touch it's up from 3 1/2 hours of video. astronaut buzz aldrin took part

the showers and storms will taper off should be this evening but as we get to tonight, by midnight most of the activity will be out of the region. lows in the 60s. winds northwest at five to ten. here we go. not much going on east but to the west all sorts of showers in ohio, west virginia. southwestern virginia a big clump of storms is moving east, hagerstown on live doppler hd. i can show you a couple of light sprinkles here that japan have generating that. most of it in to pennsylvania. can't rule out a sprinkle but fairly quiet here this morning and another steamy morning out there. i will show you the time lapse. we have had cloudiness overnight. this morning we are left with a couple of high clouds out there. 75 degrees. southeast winds are three miles an hour and the dew point is 68. a tropical feeling air mass out there with readings in the 70s. up to 77 in annapolis.

bladensburg road. past that point at florida avenue at new york you are doing all right to the third street tunnel. to round it out here's the outer loop where we have a minor slow go from new hampshire avenue to georgia and that overall drive time is taking about 15 minutes. over to you. breaking news we first brought you earlier this morning on wusa9.com. pope benedict xvi is in the hospital right now. the 82-year-old pontiff broke his wrist this morning. this is video of him from monday. a vatican spokesman says the pope slipped and fell while on vacation in the italian alps. the fracture in his right wrist is a small one. doctors are keeping him longer for observation. explosions at two luxury hotels in indonesia have left at least eight people dead and dozens injured. the blast occurred nearly simultaneously in central jakarta. one at the ritz carlton and the other at the j.w.

ran a traffic stop and shot at several officers. police in prince georges county are looking for a suspect after this shooting. it left three people hurt including a young girl. the shooting happened last night in the apartment complex in greenbelt. digital correspondent armando trull is joining us from there with his live report. >> the residents of the greenbelt apartment building are counting their blessings because they know the outcome of the shootout could have been far worse. >> i heard shots so i came outside. >> reporter: four people were hurt on thursday during a wild shootout in this greenbelt apartment building. it began after a fight between two roommates one of them an mp from fort meyer. >> the off-duty officer left the arm apartment in an attempt to call for assistance. at that point, the roommate was able to locate the officer's off-duty weapon. >> reporter: prince georges county police say the roommate ran outside and began to shoot

to see. it is a surveillance camera shooting the truck explosion on 75 near detroit on wednesday. you can see the black smoke and flames engulfing the overpass. the camera zooms in and you can see cars still driving on that overpass but minutes later it melted and collapsed because of the heat. no one was seriously hurt in this but the highway will be shut down indefinitely. the u.s. and the world are remembering the apollo moon landing from a year ago and tributes are honoring this amazing feith. here's howard. it is quiet right now but some thunderstorms are on the way later this morning in to the afternoon. some of which will be strong. talk about temperatures because it is a steamy morning out there. spoke to charlie, 68 right now only a trace of rain for the month. he is hoping we get rain later on. 72 fredericksburg.

my favorite site is this one. it is called we choose the moon and it is an interactive day by day reindication creation of the apollo mission and it is sponsored by the kennedy presidential library. the reason i like it so much is it gives you a great idea of how long the journey to the moon took. i also like it because of all the features on this site. you can change the few. right here you can see how far the vehicle is from the moon and you can even come down here and see where it is in its journey here at stage six. it will go all the way until monday. there is video, multimedia galleries, pictures, a lot of stuff here and again, my favorite part is the fact that you can go in and check in on it and appreciate how long it took. now, the other place to check out is sa 'snasite, nasa.gov. they have a website devoted to
