all clear. stronger storms later on tonight. for now it is not too bad. over to the news desk and check the forecast in a few minutes. right now charges are pending at a prince georges county apartment complex that sent a 12-year-old girl and two others to the hospital with gunshot wounds. rifourth man was treated fo juinesg tejuinmmfr inthe fight at the complex in greenbelt. audrey barnes is live from the scene with the latest. >> reporter: people living in the complex say there's been trouble in the neighborhood before. in fact i'm in the parking lot of a gas station that's been robbed three times in the last year. still residents say they never would have expected a shooting in broad daylight involving a police officer. >> there's some concern. >> darnell just moved his family from forestville to get away from the violence there and wind up a few doors down from a shootout in broad

daylight. his wife and daughter heard the gunshots. >> i told her to get down and heard five or six more right after each other. we waited it out. >> reporter: police say it started with a fight between an army civilian police officer from ft. myer and his roommate. the officer fled the apartment and called 911 and his roommate grabbed the gun he left behind and ran in the street shooting. >> 12, 15 shots. i thought they were firecrackers. >> reporter: witnesses say that eddie thornton junior who was going to visit his mother at the complex tried to intervene and he and the suspect exchanged gun fire. both were hit. so was a 12-year-old girl inside of an apartment. >> it is difficult to see something like that. a lot of people during the day and for something like this to happen in broad daylight. >> all capitol police will say is that officer thornton is a witness to a crime and he is cooperating. u.s. capitol police officer eddie thornton junior is

getting out of the hospital just in time to celebrate, we're told today is his birthday. the 12-year-old and the suspect who were wounded also shot. they are in stable condition. back to you. >> thanks for that. an update on the murder trial of benita jacks. a neighbor and boyfriend of jack's oldest daughter took the stand to testify today. they say they last saw the children during the summer of 2007. the neighbor said her daughter played with the girls then. benita jacks is on trial for the murder of her four girls. their remains were found in a home in 2008 when u.s. marshals delivered an eviction notice. a pair of suicide bombers disguised as guests attacked two hotels in the indonesian capital this morning. it was the first deadly terrorist attack in that nation in four years. as joel brown reports, officials are vowing to hunt down those responsible. >> guests and workers ran for

their lives when suicide bombers struck two luxury american hotels in downtown jakarta. at least eight people were killed and dozens injured, including at least eight americans in the well- coordinated attacks. just as guests were sitting down for breakfast one bomb went off on the 18th floor cafe of the marriott, followed almost immediately by another blast next door at the ritz carlton. it is the first major terrorist attack in indonesia in four years. one that experts say could well have been carried out by an extremist group with ties to al- qaed. >> this may be a signal not only the the government in indonesia but the rest of the world that they still exist and they don't necessarily agree or like the political trends in indonesia. >> reporter: president obama quickly condemned the attacks and said they highlight the need to remain vigilant in the fight against violent

through a brick wall just before 11:00. i ronicly it is the wall of the department of motor vehicles building. that's on edwards ferry road in leesburg. investigators say the person hit the accelerator instead of the brake. the driver was not hurt but is charged with reckless driving. the building is closed for the day. prince georges county emergency crews rush to pull a man out of a car he crashed in to a house in upper marlboro. the wreck caused the porch to collapse. the driver lost consciousness but paramedics couldn't tell if it was before or after the accident happened. he was flown to the hospital. inspectors determined the house is still safe to live in. route 3 in la plata is open after a tractor-trailer accident this morning. the the u.p.s. truck landed on its side after colliding with a car at west hawthorne drive. the road was shut down while crews cleaned the wreckage and a small fuel spill, a bank, gas station and restaurant were evacuated. the driver was taken to the

hospital with nonlife- threatening injuries. the truck driver was treated on the scene. this is video of an early morning accident that killed one person in capital heights. police say a driver lost control of the vehicle and hit a pole in the 8700 block of walker mill road. the victims have not been identified. at this hour, repair crews are on the scene of a water main break near a busy fairfax county intersection. the 24-inch main burst near franconia and telegraph roads at 5:00 this morning. telegraph road is open for traffic, but only one lane is getting by in both directions on franconia road. water service to customers in the area was not affected. a reminder if you ride metro's red line. the tacoma station will be closed tomorrow from 7 to 7 as the investigation continues in to last month's deadly train collision. shuttle bus service will be provided between the silver spring and the fort totten stations. part of m street southeast and the 12th street ramp from 295 will be closed the next two

how's this for good news on a friday? stocks made it a clean sweep this week on wall street. the dow made it five up days in a row finishing higher 32 points to close at 8743. the nasdaq like climbed a point and the s&p rose a fraction. senator lugar of indiana is the first republican to announce that he will vote to confirm the nomination of sonia sotomayor too the supreme court. he says judge sonia sotomayor is clearly qualified to serve on the high court. the full senate is expected to vote on sonia sotomayor's nomination as early as next week. president obama spoke to reporters in the past hour to give congress a nudge on health reform. he responded to action in the house and senate today. senators want more time to consider health reforms backed by the president. >> we're now at a point where most everyone agrees that we need to invest in preventive and wellness programs that can

save us money and help to lead healthier lives. we have an agreement on the need to simplify the insurance forms and paperwork that patients have to fill out every time they go to a hospital or see a doctor. we have an agreement on the need to reform our health insurance system so that if you lose your job, change your job or start a small business, you can still get affordable health insurance. >> again, president obama wants the bill to clear the house and senate by august. right now pope benedict xvi is in recovery from surgery after falling and breaking his wrist. vatican officials say the pontiff is in good spirits, but as charlie d'agata reports he is going to need to wear a cast for some time. >> reporter: pope benedict xvi smiled and waved his left hand keeping his broken rightist wrist by his side as he left the hospital. he broke his wrist overnight after slipping in the bath in italy on vacation.

right. we had a severe thunderstorm watch until 5:00. that cancelled now and the threat of severe weather is diminished. i don't think it has completely gone away. there could be some thunderstorms that could be strong but i don't think it will be a widespread severe weather event. start with the three-day trend like we always do. in to the weekend it will cool off, low to mid-80s. the normal high is 90 this time of the year. the mild summer continues after the mid-90s yesterday. for the most part it should be dry. the rest of the night, partly cloudy skies a chance of a shower or thunderstorm and some could be strong later on tonight. low temperatures in the 60s. sunset 8:31. during the day tomorrow, a mixture of clouds and sunshine. 20 to 30% chance of a shower but basically a dry day with high temperatures between 80 and 85. let's switch it over and look at live pp90ler 00. at the top of the show not a lot to talk about as far as the storms go. the one i showed you that was heading through the alexandria

area at the top of the hour is dissipated and a few showers in prince georges county. same thing with the one near annapolis across the bay now. so things are quiet around here. switch it over and we will take a wider view on the radar. if we look up stream in to ohio and west virginia we could see some shower and thunderstorms there. they are kind of strong. that's because there is a cold front getting ready to cross over the mountains. a disturbance going through right now. that is moving in to southern pennsylvania and taking the first batch of rain with it and more storms along the front and that probably won't come until 2:00 orthree in the morning. so a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the forecast until up the until that time. current temperatures cooled off because of the rain. 37 downtown. 72 hagerstown and everybody will settle back in the 60s like i said. the highs were in the 60s today in the northern great lakes. 67 in chicago. 64 minneapolis saint paul. a little chunk of that cool air slides down to us over the weekend. it is not going to get that

cool here. the front we were talking about tonight will stall on the coast. the cool air will start to fill in from the great lakes and wind up giving us below normal temperatures and because that front is still there we have to keep slight chance of a shower in the forecast. for the most part it will be dry. i think there is a better chance of rain at the beaches. so if you are going toe this beach this weekend a better chance of rain there than around the metro area. temperatures low to mid-80s. chance of a shower on monday. the front will be around still. and then warms up again if you are a summer weather fan and like that stuff. tuesday and wednesday close to 90 and chance 0 of thunderstorms on wednesday and thursday. so all in all a decent weekend. i don't think you would call it perfect or anything like that but it will be all right. >> we have had some pretty great weekends. >> we have. >> not like we can complain. >> the whole summer so far has been pretty nice. >> we will give you the weekend off. >> but you still need to come in. >> 6:00 tomorrow night. the bosses are going what's she talking about? >> thank you, tony. all of us could use a

are bringing out there. how kids are hiding for. what to test and look for. >> reporter: 19-year-old alicia is one of four people in the area who died from heroin in the last year. 16 people, mostly recent westfield high school graduates have been charged. today, he attend the sentencing of this centreville ring's heroin kingpin antonio harper. >> he was sentenced to 27 years behind bars. he was the main supplier of the centreville heroin ring. four of those departments have been sentenced to 20 years behind bars. >> we are cutting the head off the state for this particular ring this this area. he was the main supplier. >> reporter: alicia's boyfriend, 20-year-old skier will will be sentenced next week. he's the one who introduced alicia to heroin and gave her the dose that killed her. >> if he gets 20 years he will get out when he is 40, 41 years old and still have an opportunity to have a family and a life.

again. for some family members who come here they may be paying their respects at the wrong gravesites. >> where people are buried does not match on the head stones because they are using a paper recordkeeping system. despite the fact they have spent millions of dollars trying to automate the system. >> reporter: arlington's leadership has been promising to fix it since 2000. according to former employee gina gray. in 2008, gray reported continuing problems with recordkeeping to the cemetery's commander richard roe. >> two days later i was fired and nothing happened. >> reporter: she is suing the army. they said they became aware of discrepancies in the burial records last year. they say they are on target to implement a new computerized system to address the problem. mismatched head stones aren't the only worry for the families whose loved ones are buried here. according to mark benjamin. >> i watched as the elements have washed those artifacts off

almost spiritual way because my brother is buried there. >> reporter: arlington cemetery had agreed to let us film there and interview one of their officials today but changed their minds late last night. they told us they couldn't comment because of former employee's gina gray's legal actions over some of these actions. >> since that time this afternoon arlington cemetery released the following statement. it reads -- the contents of a safe owned by a murdered florida couple was revealed today by a family spokesperson. the a safe was taken from the home where the couple was

killed. it came as funeral services were about to begin. >> the safe that was removed from the billings home contains only children's prescription medication, important family documents and some jewelry of sentimental value. hopefully this will put to rest the intent speculation and rumors that are swirling about the billings family. >> reporter: six men and a teenager are charged with the murders and a woman is charged as an accessory after the fact. police think robbery was the motive. an explosion ripped through a biodiesel plant today. two people were hurt. the chicago fire department says the blast was caused by a chemical reaction, possibly sparked by a soul furyk acid spill. part of the roof caved in. a number of buildings were evacuated as a precaution. another fire tore through a miami beach mansion. it is a place known as the north bay road castle.

tendonitis. >> it is one of those words you look at and it is like stomach ache or headache. it is weird to look at when you read it. >> any weird stuff in the weather tonight. >> earlier this afternoon we had some strong thunderstorms around but i think the threat of severe weather is diminished. later on to tonight we could see some stuff coming in but for now things could be fine if you have outdoor plans or going to the game should be all right. start with the three-day trend first and look at the radar in a second. in to the weekend, mild conditions overall will continue on saturday and sunday. we made it to the mid-90s yesterday but we will drop in the low to mid-80s on saturday and sunday. that's a good five or six below the normal of 89. mostly cloudy for the rest of the night. a chance of a shower or thunderstorm still. if you have outdoor plans and it is not raining at your house, take the umbrella because there could be some stuff dwping on the.

during the day tomorrow, a mixture of clouds and sunshine and a slight chance at a shower. 20 to 30%. for the most part a dry weekend. high temperatures between 80 and 85. switch it over and look at live doppler 9000. most of the activity is in baltimore. across the eastern shore. kent and queen annes county and we're on a clean sweep in our neck of the woods. switch over and take a wider view on the radar. some stuff upstream. showers and storms in ohio and west virginia. that's all building along a cold front that is yet to come through. the front will not go by until 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning so we have to keep a chance of a shower or storm in the forecast until that time. temperature in the 70s in many places with the rain going by. but the really cool air in the great lakes. the highs in the 60s in the middle of july. chicago minneapolis and a little chunk of that cool air will slide down here. it is not going to be that cool obviously but for us, low 80s this time of the year is pretty remarkable. so 83 for a high temperature on saturday. 84 on sunday.

in the world lance has already won. the rest is just a bike race. >> reporter: because of lance armstrong, jamie lindsey has become a cyclist enthusiast but they share more than a love of bikes. both have waged a war against cancer. >> i was diagnosed with stage four diffuse b cell lymphoma and given three to 12 weeks to live. >> that's prognosis, however, was unacceptable to the airline pilot. >> i wasn't going to quit. because quitting, you know the outcome of that play. it was over. and i was able to look at lance armstrong who was supposed to die. his testicular cancer had spread through his body to his brain. he stood out as a role model of how to fight and win. >> reporter: at 57, jamie underwent a rigorous treatment program riduenng six cycles of chemotherapy, 24 hours a day, five days straight. >> at my lowest time i looked
