we flip on the camera and show you 270 and shady grove. this is near the shady grove road. that's not the right road but on 270 from 121 a lot of volume but after that montgomery village avenue to the split you are okay. 95 in virginia. a 40 minute drive if you are leaving fredericksburg to the capital beltway. no incidents there. and finally it is 15 minutes on 395 northbound from 95 over to the 14th street bridge. overall a nice ride so far. now over to andrea. >> thank you, angie. right now the barrels and barriers are up at 18 rest stops along virginia highways. they are victims of bug cuts. this closest one 0 tour area are along 95 in dale city in ladysmith an 66 in manassas. that's with we find digital correspondent armando trull this morning. armando? >> reporter: i just finished an interesting conversation with a military veteran who's been a caretaker at this rest stop for

the last three years and he says the reason folks use the rest stop is varied. yes, they use it to take a bathroom break or get rid of litter in their car and use it when they are sleepy so they don't fall asleep and have an accident and they also come here to play with children in green areas and for some families left homeless in the crisis this is a safe haven for them spend the night. as of today a 18 safe havens in virginia are gone. >> reporter: the virginia department of transportation closed 18 highway rest stops and many motorists are angry. >> pretty inconvenient to be honest with you. >> reporter: how inconvenient? the average distance between stops will now be 120 miles. >> people have to go to the bathroom and people pull up here when they are too tired and traveling. the next rest stop is maryland. who's going to wait that long to get out here? are they are facing a $2.6 billion budget defense over the next two year and closing the

stops will save them $9 million a year. >> it is important enough to try to fund find the money somewhere evidence. >> reporter: it might be through a plan proposed by governor kaine who wants to operate commercial kiosks and coffee shops at the rest stops as a way to cover the costs of staff and maintaining the facility. the plan had been defeated earlier by the virginia general assembly. >> now the rest stop closures have become a hot button issue in the race for governors. all the candidates say they have to open but right now the rest stop behind me, which is the only one open on i-66 in part part of manassas is slated for closure in september. reporting live armando trull for 9 news now and wusa9.com. well as armando said some in virginia want to save the rest areas by adding gas stations or restaurants and it would require federal approve. it is allowed in other states because the rest stops are operated on toll roads or

and these guys are the real deal. two off-duty milwaukee firefighters risk their lives to save a woman and her two children from a burning car and the entire rescue was caught on tape. here's eric from milwaukee. >> get away. >> a mother and her two children trapped in a vehicular infern know. >> there's a baby in there! >> reporter: residents pour in to the street knowing every sec the three are caged inside could be deadly. the mom and 2-year-old are first out but the 4-year-old is still trapped and time is ticking. >> give me the kid. >> whoa. >> reporter: finally those on the scene including an off-duty office and firefighter get the child out. with second and third degree burns but alive. >> if people wouldn't have came out and helped that child this that backseat he would have perished in the burning vehicle, yes. >> officials say the driver may

stepping up their opposition to the plan. here's what michael steel had say on monday. >> obama, pelosi want to start to build a cole loss sal closed health care system where washington decides. republicans want it support an open health care system where patients and doctors make the decisions. >> reporter: one concession on new taxes to pay for health care, house speaker nancy pelosi wants to raise the knicks level from $350,000 to $1 million. the flu vaccine you get later this year will not protect against the h1n1 virus. the food and drug administration's newry approved vaccine will offer protection from three common flu strains but an h1n1 vaccine is still in development. doctors say it is still important to get the seasonal flu shot. thousands of people especially chronically ill and small children die from the flu every year. the et cofounder sheila johnson says she is a life-long democrat but she is supporting

the republican in virginia's gubernatorial race. she has endorsed bob mcdonnell. she says he is best suited for picking virginia's economic problems. johnson was the second largest donor to the tim kaine campaign. turning an the economy could mean reopening highway rest areas. 18 in the commonwealth are now closed. it is a move that is new this this morning armando trull is along 66 with the story. >> take a look. this is what is greeting thousands of motorists throughout the common wealth as they pull up to rest stops in virginia. barricade and barrels saying they are no longer welcome at 18 rest stops throughout the state. the virginia department of transportation is facing a $2.6 billion deficit over the next six years and closing these stops will close -- save $54

but it is looking at more serious punishments. drivers who tech behind the wheel will be fired immediately now. jessica doyle is here with another living smart report and she says a move by united airlines could hike fares across the board. >> it could be getting more expensive to fly for some folks. a move by united could raise ticket prices and steal business from some travel agents. they have stopped processing credit card transactions for certain travel agencies that mean those agencies will have to pay the 3 1/2% credit card processing fees that united currently absorbs. it would work out to be $17.50 on a $500 ticket. they say the costs will likely be passed on to customers and other airlines could follow suit, as well. they could avoid the costs by booking the flights on united website. a group of two-door cars are proving to be good safety and value for customers. they say the ford focus and
