flying westbound on route 50 in maryland. from the bay bridge, all the way to the capital beltway. looks like you are going to find lanes wide open and tc drivers are moving at speed. we will take it to the district, inbound new york avenue. the drive through northeast. speeds are dropping from the washington times building past bladensburg road. okay from many florida avenue to the third street tunnel and to wrap it up here's 270. if you are slow from 109 to 121. a lot of volume here at germantown. over to andrea. >> thank you, angie. this morning metro is refuting the story about safety on the rails. caught in the middle all of you who ride the rails in the morning. this post reports more problems with track circuits like the one suspected in last month's deadly crash. it says problem have been found between medical center, foggy bottom, courthouse, greenbelt, fort totten. armando trull has both sides of the story. >> reporter: this is that report you were eluding to and

as you said it is not just here at the greenbelt station but metro center grove nor, courthouse and chain on the and foggy bottom and all of those tracks may have safety problems. >> an investigative story in the "washington post" suggests that metro's train control system that is suppose to prevent crashes is mall functionening across the court. half a dozen circuits on the four of the five lines have failed to properly detect trains says the post article. they say that internal document and interviews with officials indicates the problem responsible for last month's fatal crash may be widespread. this doesn't surprise the president of the union that represents metro's train operators. >> from our members, we have heard of stories such as this occurring out on the line. >> reporter: metro's -- metro's general manager angrily denied the allegations at a press

about a health care forum in maryland. it includes a loud exchange between senator ben darden and constituents. see it for yourself by visiting the maryland news page. we should know soon if a group of high school students from our area will be released from a chinese hospital and get back to their vacation. 22 maryland and dc students are quarantined at their hotel in beijing. at least one member of the group has a confirmed case of h1n1 flu. natalie cheney is part of the group. in an interview with chinese television she says the chinese are treating all of them well. >> we have been treated well. in fact they have received american food. they have a tv. >> the group from our area is in china with the con few, institute. the purpose is for a cross cultural, change. the group will pay for any kind of extended stay for the students. governor o'malley says education is the only area which is safe from another round of budget cuts.

the free state is facing a $700 million deficit and $280 million in cuts will be approved today coming from medicaid and health care programs. o'malley says more furloughs for state workers could be possible. virginia gubernatorial candidate bob mcdonnell is laying our his plan to raise a million billion dollars for road he wants to privatize state-run liquor stores in the commonwealth and is talking able adding toll booths on 85 and 95 and wants sales taxes for road projects here. deeds has not laid out his transportation funding plan yet. jessica doyle tells us which company is saying what recession. >> love it. another record-breaking quarter for apple this time and that is because people just need to have that new iphone. that's meaning big bucks for apple. profits up 15% to $1.2 billion

in the latest quarter beating estimates. apple sold more than 5.2 million iphones in the last three months. already than seven times what it sold last year. sales of macs were on the rise, too. the only weak spot, ipod sales down 7%. starbucks swung from a loss to a profit last year year beating expectations. shares are up 11% in after- hours trading. since howard shultz returned to ceo they have closed stores renegotiated rent, reduced suppliers. weak earnings show that the recession is taking a toll on continental. they announced they are slashing 1700 job and charging more for bags. and united is cutting flights in response to fewer travelers. united will make an additional 7% cut to international flight

40 union soldiers died here in dc during washington's only civil war battle the battle of fort stevens they were buried 0 then battleground which became battleground national cemetery and there a parks ranger made a discovery that would change his life and the lives of the 40 men forever. >> just off of georgia avenue in northwest washington, the ranger walks in to one of the smallest cemeteries in the entire park service, battleground national cemetery. >> literally we are standing on the battlefield. if it wasn't for these men right here dc might have fallen. so this is extremely hallowed ground. >> reporter: their names have been carved in stone for more than a century but ranger ron began to question the names ten years ago. >> when i started to read the head stones i wanted to find out more about these men. i knew they were killed during the battle but that's all we

eastern shore. adeastern shore. the headline in sae "u today" a cane is a weapon, not a crutch in self defense. lauren ashburn has more on the story from salisbury, maryland. we see something like this in movies but this is serious. >> it is serious. there is a man from nevada and he started a program for seniors to teach them to use a cane in self defense and his thought is if you feel empowered you will be empowered and you will be able to fight off attackers if there is ever a case of that. we are looking at video of the class that he teaches across the country. if you are interested in more about this you can go to cane masters.com but some have graduated from walkers to canes and they teach them the best place to hit is the elbow, knee and shin and teach you to do it. what you don't realize is that you can stop an attack by appearing to fight back. this isn't like you are really going to hurt somebody. >> they don't want to deal with any resistance and the problem

heavy from shady grove to montross. that's a look at traffic. now over to you. president obama will take his case for health care reform straight to us on the. he will hold a primetime news conference at 8:00. speaking with katie couric, the president laid out his three key points for a reform bill. number one, let's make sure this package provides more choices to the american people, give them more security if they have a preexisting condition or they lose their job or they are changing jobs. it has to be deficit neutral. it can't add to our deficits and it has to bring long-term costs down. >> reporter: again, the press conference is tonight at 8:00. you can watch it here on wusa9.com or on wusa 9. the president is facing a challenge from moderate democrats on captiol hill including virginia freshman congressman gerald connelly. he is opposed to taxes on the

rich to pay for the reform saying there has to be other options. >> the insurance industry for example has put a dime of identified savings on the table yet. the hospitals and pharmacies have but not the insurance companies a all. >> reporter: the district in northern virginia is among the richest in the nation. president obama promises of d an change maybe getting mired down. i think the country is headin in the wrong direction ad according to an associated press gfk poll out today. 54% of us think we are going the wrong way up up 46% around e al mori day and 44% in april and the same as mothe last days of the previous administration. virginia's governor tim kaine is expected to call for a special legislative session today. the associated press reports the issue is a u.s. supreme court ruling that is causing problems for virginia

prosecutors. the ruling requires forensic examiners to be available in court for cross-examination and drug cases. previously only sworn affidavits were required. meanwhile, new documents show governor kaine's travel is on the rise. the "washington post" reports he spent half of the days in june traveling outside of the area on business. a disturbing report in today's "washington post" for people who ride tro. accusations of more problems like the one which led to last month's deadly crash. but metro is firing back. digital correspondent, armando trull is live at the greenbelt station with the story. >> good morning. >> the washington post story says there are problems on the track circuit at the greenbelt line and not just greenbelt, they also say metro center, grovesnor and foggy bomb and

claire on the stations have similar problems the "washington post" article says the same problem that caused the fatal crash is widespread and many portions of track on four of the system's five lines are failing to detect trains. a gross exaggeration of the facts says metro's top man. >> the reports you have are not true. >> reporter: the president of the union that represents the train operators agrees with that the system is safe, but disagrees on the big picture. >> he's not looking at the whole picture. i think something else is going on out there and because of information that we have received we know that this is not an isolated incident. and i'd like for them to look in to it and let us know what is going on completely. >> reporter: many of the people who use metro have the same concerns. >> anyone who ride the trains knows there is some problem still going on just by the volume of people on each train and how many times it gets off
