california yesterday. meantime the district of columbia has its own major money problems and now $50 million will have to be cut from mayor adrian fenty's school reform budget. that's the word today from a fenty supporter an key player on the dc council where the red ink is just piling up. here is bruce johnson. >> reporter: dc workers say they are willing to take pay cuts and furloughs if that will save jobs. a lot of people would like to take a week off. >> they sure will. >> generating roughly $1000 per day writing parking tickets but the dc government will have to raise a lot more or cut a lot more to avoid the type of deficits that nearly sent it into bankruptcy years ago. >> this council has an opportunity in the next two weeks to either make those decisions or someone will make those decisions for us. >> senior councilman, jack evans, says $50 million must be cut from dc schools. that would be a serious if not crippling blow to mayor adrian

fenty and michele reed's reform with evans supported. >> it will certainly slow down hiring of teachers at higher levels. it is going to slow down possibly the renovations of the schools. we cannot afford to do what we are doing right now in education. >> they must keep the lights on, trash picked up, awrong with other basic services. but evans says police and fire departments can expect significant cuts along with human services. >> if the city's elected leaders do nothing by the end of fiscal 2011 the city's deficit will have climbed to $615 million. the fear is because more than half of the council and the mayor are up for re-election next year. whatever they do, it won't be enough. while it is bad here it is a lot worse in some other big cities. philadelphia has stopped paying its bills until the end of the year. new york city has seen a 34% reduction in its tax revenues. bruce johnson, 9news now and

tonight president obama plans to have a little talk with you an me about health care reform. he will hold a prime time news conference and he is trying to shore up support for reform and pressuring congress to act before the august recess. polls show support for health care reform is slipping a bit an even democrats on capitol hill are expressing doubt. they are hammering away that the white house health care reform is a heartbreaker and rush job. >> we need to take our time and do it right. >> i have no interest in creating a bad bill. that doesn't serve me and it certainly doesn't serve the american people. >> you can watch president obama's 8:00 p.m. news conference right here on wusa and our website wusa9.com. joining us now to talk about the proposal and what the president may need to say tonight julia thompson former lobbyist for the american medical association. welcome. glad to have you here.

>> the president has tried to get everybody around the table, all the stakeholders as we call them including the doctors on this one. is there anything he needs to say to bring folks closer to accepting this plan? >> there are a number of things. first, what he needs to do is to shore up people to let them know that he is working on this issue. this is really a long-term deal. i have never been one that felt that we would get both houses to pass something by the august recess. but i'm absolutely certain that something will be passed and signed into law before the end of the year. >> you're a lot more certain then i think maybe the president is right now. >> i think he is certain. you have to take a long-term view. congress is not a fast institution. it doesn't work rapidly. but the fact is, he has been pressing them in order to make them work. if you don't lean on them they don't work. >> let's talk about the big issue we keep hearing about. the publicly funded half of the insurance program. proponents say this will keep the insurer's honest on the private side. opponents say this will put the

private insurers out of business. where are you on this? who is right? >> they are both right and wrong. we need to do something to take care of the 40 plus million uninsured in this country. a public plan, some would advocate is a means to get there. if you do a public plan you have to make sure that it doesn't undercut the private plans and there lies the friction. the private plans are afraid they will you be undercut by the federal government and get put out of business. >> the other friction is the cost of all this. doesn't the president need to be a little more honest with the american people and say you can't have what you want. what they want is insurance all the time when ever they want it and paid for by somebody else. >> well, all politicians have a difficult time telling the american people they can't have everything they want but you're right there. >> never comes up, never brought forward. i haven't heard anybody talk about the issue of rationing except to say they don't want it. >> they don't want it. what the american people feel passionatelly about their health care so it is easy to

scare folks into being in the opposition. >> if the president can bring along a couple of more folks on this thing, how about the insurance companies who are the one group that has not put any money on the table. doctors have, big. >> insurance companies will put the money on the table. they will as soon as of it. very clear. what's different between now and 1993 and 1994 the insurers also want health care reform. if they see guaranteed issue as well as individual mandate they would be very happy because there would be people that would flock in. they just don't want to be undercut by price by the federal government. >> all right. we will wait and see what happens. thank you for coming in. we appreciate your insights tonight the human trial on the h1n1 vaccine will get unway next month. university of maryland one of ten places in the nation taking part in the study. the clinics are looking for 1000 adults an children to help out and it gets going next

enforcement agency officers raided the houston office of michael jackson's doctor today. dr. conrad murray's attorney says the authorities were looking for evidence of manslaughter. the search warrant authorized the seizure of several documents that may constitute evidence of the crime. dr. murray was with jackson the day he collapsed and died. in living well tonight helping local kids live healthy active and most importantly steroid free lives. that was the mission of a two- hour event called simply play. the nats training staff and athletic pros talked about how to excel in sports without performance-enhancing drugs. >> promoting lifetime activity for youth is what p.l.a.y. stands for. teaching young people to get out an enjoy themselves with activities that will help them throughout their life.
