>> good evening, i'm lesli foster. we have got new unsettled findings tonight from investigators on the metrorail tragedy. the ntsb says there were additional electrical malfunctionings occurring at the crash site going on for as many as 18 months before the crash. scott broom joining us live with more. scott? >> reporter: lesli, a malfunction going undetected for a year and a half does not sound good but today metro officials said there was no evidence that the malfunction reveal today led to what everyone has been looking for which is trains being missed by controllers. >> they are not saying this is a definitive smoking gun, this might be a piece of that puzzle. >> reporter: metro general manager facing tough questions. why were the 18 months of malfunctions in a train detection circuit discovered after the tragedy on the red line that killed nine and not

by metro beforehand? one answer, the malfunctions apparently weren't bad enough to cause an actual system failure. >> it had some fluctuations in it. like the lights in this room or the lights in your house at times they might glow a little brighter and a little dimmer. they have not been able to find any evidence that that particular -- the new one, the one since december 7th has failed to detect trains. >> reporter: he has ordered an intense review of the data to be sure. the news about the second malfunctioning circuit on the section of track between fort totten and takoma is in addition to a previous focus by ntsb. for riders this is another indication that delays due to cautious train operations will continue into the foreseeable future. data from all the systems' 3000 circuits are now being reviewed twice a day instead of once a

funding the pentagon's next generation jet fighter program. both the president and defense secretary agreed the program for the f-35 should end. the jet you see here is the f- 22 fighter. just two days ago the senate terminated its production. the savings to taxpayers about 439 million. right now emergency room doctors are treating a golf pro who was injured when lig ghin stck right next tom. hi ened earlier this afternoon at the congressional country club in bethesda. that's where bruce leshan is with the latest. >> reporter: for anybody that knows him and is worried about him we can now share the name of the golf pro. he is danny shands. the good news is looks like he will be fine. everyone knows a golf course is the last place you wants to be in a storm but a nasty fast moving lightning packed cell caught the golfers by surprise. >> lightning hit right over my head and i was just trying to get off the golf course and i just heard a guy got hit.

ravaged their bodies. at least one chhad was killed nine months before officers discovered the girl's remains. bc police are looking for a gunman that killed one an sent another to hospital. it happened around 2:00 a.m. this morning in southeast. no word on the condition of the victim who survived or a motive. today family, friends and former colleagues of the most trusted man in america paid their final respects. hundreds packed the church to say goodbye to cbs news legend walter cronkite. best friend of 35 years mike ashford spoke at today's service. >> i was always asked what's he really like? and i would answer he is just the way you hope he is. he was always, i thought, the same guy that most of america guessed he was.

is heating up between hillary clinton and north korea much the communist country has ridiculed her saying she has no understanding of international manners. this all started after the secretary warned north korea to give up its nuclear program or face sanction. now to fireworks of a different kind in the sky. boy, one golfer is pretty lucky. >> really lucky. and we talk about it and talk about it but lightning is much more dangerous than tornadoes and hurricanes and blizzards and that's why. we are looking at big thunderstorms moving out of the area. there are no warnings but still some big storms. we will track them for in a moment. next three days upper 80s tomorrow. slight chance of a thunderstorm. today really was our best chance for widespread activity. 91 on saturday. couple of storms. 90 on sunday. showers and storms in all night. won't be one of those cases where when the sun goes down the storms die out.

it will die out a little bit but there is enough energy in the atmosphere to keep them going at least until about midnight. low temperatures 65 to about 70. live doppler 9000 and we will pinpoint the activity. most of it is just east if you draw a line through dc, just east of us. but still, some heavy activity. down toward the northern neck. tornado warning out in north cumberland county this side of the potomac just to the south and west of reedville. nothing confirmed now. doppler indicated. moving offshore. just thought i'd pass that along. that's in umberland county. way, way south of us. generally moving to the east. this will move across pretty much columbia then just south of baltimore then this storm moves across in st. mary's county. we know doppler indicated 1 to 2 inches of rain per hour so keep that in mine. maybe some small hail. a reminder you can go to our website wusa9.com. go to the weather tab and then

click on interactive radar and you can track these along with us. this is where the storm is now. dc. north west part of town. where is it going to go? moving south and east. crossing the beltway. then out toward upper marlboro. again, it will have heavy, heavy rains with it. we will track a couple more storms now one up to the north and we are looking at this storm again no hail but this is a lot of rain. around colesville, 29. new hampshire avenue. where is it going in the next hour? right across new hampshire right to the north of beltsville, over towards laurel. crossing 95 and crossing u.s. 1. back to the computer we go. we will talk about temperatures. those areas that received rain are cooled off. 77 in frederick, 79 downtown. 86 though in manassas. 81 in baltimore. tomorrow morning, should be quiet. partly cloudy. warm. 60s and 70s. winds north west at about 5 to 10. and then by afternoon partly.

thunderstorm possible. highs 85 to 90. light winds but the storms tomorrow really will be few and far between. 9 micro cast model. even by 10:00 p.m. tonight i think we are still going to have storms to go through and may take awhile. midnight we are looking at storms then we get into early morning on friday just a mix of clouds and sun again. i don't think we will see much in terms of activity on friday or saturday. we will keep the chance of an isolated storm in as humidity and heat increases. get into friday night. maybe a couple sprinkles across the bay and after that maybe we see some storms develop in the mountains even saturday. but even that looks like kind of a hit or miss deal. we are looking at a pretty good forecast. very summer like as we get into the weekend and next weekend. satellite picture and radar combined. we watched this a couple days ago off the coast of florida now moved along the coast. not tropical but it is producing tremendous rain just offshore. and as far as we are concerned most of our showers and storms to the east of us but we are going to keep them in the forecast for the remainder of
