"this broadcast realtime captioned by becky lyon." i'm bruce johnson. thank you for joining us this sunday night. alexandria's police chief on paid administrative leave top after his arrest on dui charges. the chief was arrested last night after the city-owned vehicle he was driving struck another vehicle causing minor damages and injuries. surae chinn has more on this story, our digital correspondent. >> reporter: chief david baker's job is on the line tonight. city officials say he was driving a city vehicle when he got into an accident last night. the city manager says according to its policy driving a city vehicle while intoxicated is a fireable offense. the police chief david baker arrested and booked last night.

his blood alcohol level .19 more than twice the legal limit. >> i have placed chief baker on paid administrative leave at this time. >> reporter: alexandria officials quick to respond to this embarrassing bombshell appointing the executive police chief to lead the police department. >> this is behavior that i have never seen. it is something that has certainly not been a part of his career or even his ethics and i have worked with him now for 19 years. so the surprising thing is that this even came up at all. >> reporter: officials say baker was driving a city vehicle merging onto i-66 in arlington county when he hit another car at 11:00 p.m. last night. the driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries. >> i have had two conversations with the chief. he is very very apoll

apologetic. >> reporter: they say the 58- year-old baker has an impeckable record. the man who spent his entire professional career in law enforcement facing the end of his career. >> he is well aware of it. >> it is very disappointing obviously when any of our colleagues make a bad decision and comes to a conclusion such as this. >> reporter: officials say chief baker went through normal booking and bonding procedures. the investigation is through the city manager's office and baker's future will ultimately be the city manager's decision. he says he wants the investigation to be transparent and wants to take swift action. a decision on baker could happen within the week. baker's arraignment is wednesday. bruce? >> thank you. if convicted chief david baker would face a minimum five days' in jail because his blood

100% avoidable. turning elsewhere. an argument between two men left an innocent bystander wounded at a montgomery county shopping center. this happened on route 22 at a chuckie cheese story. >> reporter: montgomery police are picking up evidence. not only did this happen shortly after 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon it happened in front of chuckie cheese, a place synonymous with children's birthday parties. >> it is terrible. nowhere is safe any more it seems like. >> reporter: the restaurant had no big parties at the time of the shooting but while no children were apparentsly in the cross fire a woman police believe is an innocent bystander was struck in the leg by a bullet. detectives say the shooting happened when two men began arguing and one man pulled a gun and began firing. police say after the shooting the gunman ran behind chuckie cheese. the woman that was hit ran to the other end of the shopping

annandale woman. police say a woman suffered trauma to her upper body and they refused to release more specific information about just how she died. a hate crime an burglary in anna rundle county. officers found numerous racist and derog deroggatory words. authorities say it may have been an attempt at arson. >> they pretty much saturated everything with gas. chairs. driers. >> could have started there and the whole shopping center could have on fire. >> police say a computer, hair clippers and a tattoo gun were stolen during that break in. the shop owners say they plan to cleanup and reopen as soon as possible. eight people including four

children were killed when a minivan slammed into several other vehicles and burst into flames. it happened just this afternoon in westchester new york. all four children were riding in the minivan when it struck an suv and another vehicle. >> on a sunday afternoon like this at rush hour, pretty horrible news. pretty horrible news. and the family, innocent kids, innocent lives taken. >> i set up triage and this vehicle was completely engulfed with a woman that was burning. >> were there people thrown from the vehicle in. >> several people were ejected. mostly children. we were able to save one young child's life. >> three adults in that suv were killed, two people in the third vehicle were also hurt. tonight they are being treated for minor injuries. cause of the crash is still under investigation this evening. some scary moments for

passengers aboard a southwest airlines flight. a plane was forced to make an emergency landing on long island after smoke filled the cabin. the 737 was on its way from hartford, conneticut, to orlando, florida when the crew declared an emergency. the pilot diverted the plane to long island and made a safe landing. all 140 passengers and crew are said to be okay. officials near cincinnati believe a gas leak ignited an explosion turning a two-story house into a one-story structure. witnesses say the home rose about 20 feet before it came crashing down. >> it was so wild. my ears are still hurting. >> the first suspicion would be natural gas. a leak somewhere in the building. what caused the leak? why the building chose to explode at t time? those ise rticularar th those are the things we investigate. n>> investigate. >> t out wi ndows out windows in neighboring homes. no reports of injuries tonight. the body of a missing 11- year-old girl was found in

[ applause ] >> reporter: sarah palin is now alaska's most famous ex- governor. >> it is me because i love alaska this much sir that i feel that it is my duty to avoid the unproductive, typical politics as usual, lame duck session in one's last year in office. how does that benefit you. >> reporter: all weekend she has been on a good-bye tour serving hot dogs and flipping salmon burgers at town picnics. on july 3rd the governor announced she was leaving office 16 months early. she felt the lawsuits and ethics probes against her had become a distraction to the office and she wanted to focus on her family. some speculation her departure opens up a run for the presidency in 2012 but with her

this evening. it happened in east baltimore along ashland avenue. a 2-year-old child shot in the arm and a 23-year-old pregnant woman was shot in the leg. a suspect or suspects walked into the alley adjacent to the home and opened fire on the crowd before running away. a man who was attending a bachelor party as a bar next to the philadelphia phillies ballpark was beaten to death in a brawl. he was assaulted, taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. a hearing is scheduled for this week for the man accused of shooting a security guard at the memorial museum that happened last month. an attorney for the accused said his client is not well enough to come to court. prosecutors say doctors told them the 89-year-old suspect might be able to come to court later in the month.

he faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of museum guard steven johns. branch robbery suspect cynthia crawford will be in court tomorrow to face arraignment. she entered a bank on friday. an alert bank employee jotted down the license plate number on crawford's car as she made her get away down route 1. police stopped crawford a short time later and has been held without bond since her arrest. gathering in annapolis in monday for a swine flu summit. emergency preparedness for the flu will be one of the items on the agenda. maryland state health officials reported their fourth swine flu- related death. mayor fenty is thinking of cutting monthly help for any recipient deemed employable who

reports of hail up to an inch in diameter and few trees down in loudoun county. there could be a little bit of rain around in the morning but i doubt if if it will be anything significant so i don't think you have to get up extra early on monday morning. that's always a good thing to hear. let's take a look at the three- day trend first and we will show you the radar in a moment. 86 is what we are shooting for a high temperature. normal high is 89. we are going to spend most of the week right in that neighborhood. upper 80s to around 90 and just as is typically the case in summertime dc, hit and miss showers abs -- showers and thunderstorms in the forecast. tonight, partly cloudies, 20 or 30% for a shower or thunderstorm. that's all you see heading into tomorrow morning. 70% chance you'll wake up dry in the morning. during the day tomorrow. partly sunny skies. again, a slight chance for a

shower or thunderstorm. i'll put a 30% mark on it. high temperatures in the mid to upper 80s. sunrise tomorrow morning at 605. here is the weather setup. we had actually a wind shift line go through earlier this afternoon. they are called troughs. nothing more than a wind shift line but enough to create the thunderstorms that we had earlier this evening. now most of that activity is out along the coast and heading out into the open water. there is a cold front on the other side of the mountains dividing a muggy air mass that we are in right now and much dryer one out in the ohio valley. this one is actually going to come through late tonight, tomorrow morning and just dissipate once it gets past dc and over onto the eastern shore but because it will be in the neighborhood we have to keep that slight chance for a shower or thunderstorm in the forecast overnight and into tomorrow morning. indeed you can see some scattered activity still showing up here and there. it is dry around the city right now but, again, there is that slight chance that something could pop up as we head toward tomorrow morning but i don't think it will affect the monday morning commute that much.

national airport. 78. dew point 68. kind of muggy producing relative humidity of 71%. 66 in winchester. there could be a little bit of fog developing overnight tonight going into tomorrow morning as well. here is the weather setup as we head into next week. a little bit of a change. for most of the summer the jet stream has been digging down the west coast that's why we have enjoyed the cool autumn- like conditions. it will shift to the west. dip in the jet stream will be more out in the great lakes and into the plains states and that means some of the hot area from down south will have a chance to sneak up the east coast. won't get terribly warm but will just feel more like it should. upper 80s, low 90s. that's basically the forecast all the way through the end of the week. a 30% chance for a shower or thunderstorm each day all the way through friday. again, don't let the thunder bolt scare you. this is not going to be a widespread rain event either one of those days and i'm going
