shawn parnell. >> with this decision i can fight harder for you rebound walking out the door, one more defiant jab at the press. >> our new governor has a very nice family, too. so leave his kids alone. >> reporter: and at hollywood -- >> hollywood needs to know, we eat, therefore, we hunt. >> reporter: but why is she stepping down? >> i have no idea what her game plan is. >> reporter: while a majority of americans, 53% view palin negatively she remains widely popular in the republican party. 70% have a positive opinion of her. now with a book deal, book tour in the works, and $1 million in political action coffers is she stepping off stage or setting stage to run for president. >> you have a stigma that's attached and it can be very damaging in any future campaign if she does decide to take it on. >> reporter: now, sarah palin is keeping in touch with her

followers through twitter. but don't look for campaign announcements there either. her last announcement on twitter when she left the governorship, a simple with "thank you." harry? >> thanks so much. joining us is our political commentator, ann coulter and in washington, former bush speechwriter, david fromm. this woman is a rock tar. i don't want to disagree with politico. i don't think it matters that she quit with a little less than a year to go. what's her next step, ann coulter. >> i have no knowledge of this, but i suspect -- she has a book contract. and she's just an amazing speaker. i think she may do something like the ronald reagan ge tours where she goes around and speaks because she is heavily loved by conservative groups and politicians.

she has amazing star power and it will be interesting to see. the reason the mainstream media by and large didn't cover the edwards affair is the argument that he's a private citizen now. an expresidential candidate but a private citizen, if the media will leave her alone. and i don't think so. >> she had plenty to say to the media yesterday and gave the media a tongue lashing. david fromm, is sarah palin the future of the republican party? >> she's a future of the republican party. she's a force within the republican party and anne's right to say she's been asked to speak in many republican affairs. but one of her first invitationtion was for a battle. texas governor asked her to come speak against kay bailey hutchison. so this is divisive within the party. and many fear as i do, while she's popular with some republicans that she represents the future that leads the party to political defeat and

ineffectiveness of government. >> she talked about the north star during her speech. is she the north star? is she unlike what david might suggest, is she really who the republicans are? >> i think a lot closer to the republican party that wins. this is a long-standing battle within the republican party, generally. this sort of moderate, roll rockefeller republicans versus the right-wing republicans. and reagan was pretty divisive too. he ran against george bush and the claim was, he's just appealing to the base. the republican base had a wide appeal. and when we runs with the wide appeal like john mccain, that tends to be when we lose. i don't know if she'll run in four years. she has such an appeal. one person who has noticed and been quite interested in sarah palin is margaret thatcher who is dying to talk to sarah palin because interestingly, margaret thatcher is the daughter of a grocer. she had to teach herself to

speak proper english and i think sarah palin will probably have to stop that dropping her g's but that's minor compared to the star appeal she has. >> david fromm? let me talk about the north star. the reason for her appeal. it is an amazing thing that a governor's most notable achievement in office was to distribute an extra $1200 year to every resident in alaska. she would include in her speech about government handouts. when she was popular in alaska, she gave everybody $1200. but she's leaving with her state in great fiscal difficulty. i don't know what kind of right-wing republican you are by saying i'm raising taxes an oil companies. as a right-winger it's a strange approach. >> let's go back to anne's point. what about the idea that she's really the one that represents, can she reach over? can she reach over to what we used to call "reagan democrats?" can she win it all?

>> we know the answer to this question because we can see what happened in 2008 between the time she was announced at the end of august of 2008 and the voting day. sarah palin had the steepest decline in approval of any national politician ever in american polling history. and the decline was steepest among women. the very people whom republicans most need to win. by the end of the campaign she had the highest negatives of any other republican candidate. she had failed after interview and interview. she could not explain what she believed who she was. she had a slight record of achievement which is mostly one of taxing and giving away money in cash i don't think -- it's not impossible that she could win a republican nomination. the presidency? impossible. the rest of us will pay the price. >> i disagree with all of that. that's all we have time for. >> anne, thank you so much and david, appreciate it. an important lesson for all of us about being extra careful on the road. a horrible car crash yesterday killed eight people including

four little girls. it happened just north of new york city. a mini van wyoten the wrong wayn at parkway and smashed into a suv. our news correspondent terrell brown has the story. >> reporter: it left even veteran first responders shaken. >> i'm not familiar with any other crashes that reached the magnitude of this tragic accident in recent memory. >> reporter: sunday afternoon, a long island family in a mini van drove the wrong way in the northbound lanes of a freeway north of new york city. that van crashed head-on into a suv, killing the three men inside. the minivan was filled with children. a mother, carrying her son, daughter and three nieces. the crash sent the minivan rolling down an embankment and ejecting three of the children and after coming to rest, the van burst into flames. when firefighters arrived, that van was still on fire. crews worked to save as many passengers as they could managing to pull one child out

alive. that child was a little boy. the mother's son. everyone else in the minivan was killed. terrell brown, cbs news, new york. time for a check of the rest of the day's headlines. russ is at the news desk. good morning. french president nicolas sarkozy is out of the hospital. he and his wife walked out of a paris hospital and thanked the doctors. sore cozy collapsed while jogging in hot weather. medical tests showed no heart problems but he was told to rest. harvard professor and scholar henry louis gates jr. and cambridge police officer, james crowley have accepted the president's invitation to talk about the. >> reporter: over a beer at the white house. we're in cambridge with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. definitely a sign of things getting back to normal. about 15 minutes ago here at the cambridge police department, sergeant james crowley slowly walked into work. he was in full uniform and

smiling and drinking a cup of coffee and he waved and said "no comment." a sense of things moving on. the controversy surrounding henry gates and sergeant james crowley calmed down over the weekend and the two men laid low. >> i'm going to work now. >> reporter: saturday, gates accepted the president's offer for a beer at the white house, a chance for all three men to meet. saying that "i'm pleased to use my experience as a teaching moment. i would be happy to oblige." crowley said he's waiting for maldetails. the future sit-down made for a buzz on sunday new's shows. >> he wants them to come to the white house. is that in fact going to happen? >> i, expect it will. i think the president sees this as an opportunity to get dialogue going. >> sergeant crowley told the president, he was game. and i've read that professor gates is the same way. so hopefully, we can get that done in the next several days.

all the trees were down in the middle of the street. >> it was like -- five minutes and it was like the railroad came through. >> like a train? >> i guess. >> reporter: still, another tornado this time, in western new york, near buffalo. the twister touched down in the town of daryann with wind speeds near 100 miles an hour and it caused damage to more than two dozen homes. blue skies through much of the northeast right now but still recovering in airports across the region. lots of delays and it's scheduled to get back on track. the possibility as you head down to the carolinas of rough weather today and heavy rain. really, from the southern plains to the central rockies, you could see some severe weather today and hail and thunder and lightning and high winds, and extreme high heath in the pacific northwest. that's what we're watching. the all-time record in seattle, 100 degrees. we'll come this close and maybe tie it in portland, you'll be

the l.a.x. county coroner is expected to release the results of michael jackson's autopsy this week. our dr. jennifer ashton is here with the latest. >> good morning. it's believed at the time of his death michael jackson may have been taking more than a dozen zen different drugs. with the release of the toxicology report we'll know what role these drugs played in the king of pop's death. which drugs were in michael jackson's body when he died? how much? and did they cause his death? those are just a few of the questions expected to be

citations as a result. finding that no studio teacher was present as required by law, which was necessary to safeguard the workplace, and in this case the nursery for the infants. the hours in which the filming took place were after the hours allowed by law and for longer periods of time allowed by law and no work permits were on file as required by law. but our case today in orange county superior court is we are -- we have filed seeking the appointment of a guardian over the estate of the octuplets and the purpose of that is to help to protect their financial future to make sure that their earnings are going to be there in the future when they glow up and they will not have been dissipated or spent by any other person. >> let me give you the last word, paul. in the last 30 secondsou y can speak to this first-hand. you were a former child star a y you say every single child that appeared on tv for an extended period of time has a day of wroek wreck onning. >> you suddenly wake up one

some monster waves pounded the shores of southern california over the weekend. a 50-year-old body surfer was killed on friday after being slammed into the rocks by waves as big as 20 feet. more than 380 people had to be rescued at the beach alone. with waves, size can be deceiving. here to explain kr, our correspondent. >> good morning, harry. by looking at them billing waves can seem dangerous but even small waves can be a hazard to you and your family. this is a practice drill for lifeguards in ocean city, maryland. a mock rescue of someone who's been slammed to the ground by a wav wave. >> wet sand is no more forgiving than concrete. >> reporter: butch arbin is captain of the ocean city beach patrol. he says every season his

lifeguards handle more than 100 rescues of swimmers that have hit the ocean floor. >> the problem with these types of injuries they happen in a split second. >> reporter: josh basile was paralyzed from the shoulders down after being thrown by a wave. >> i was in waist-high water and a wave came by and picked me up and dropped me on my head. >> did you know instantly something was wrong? >> i didn't have pain but when i started to turn i couldn't. >> reporter: jsh's accident happened in something called "shore break." when waves break abruptly into shallow water, slamming swimmers into the hard sand. the united states life saving association calls shore break an international problem, causing debilitating injuries, even death. sandy beach in hawaii is notorious for shore break.

but experts say even small waves can be dangerous. the day we were taping our story in ocean city, a young girl was injured after being hit by a wave. lifeguards here use real-life rescues like this one to educate beachgoers about the dangers. >> our guards hold safety seminars on the beach every day. if we see shore break we pull the crowd out of the water and we explain it to them. >> reporter: warning signs are being used at some beaches in the united states and there's a push to develop an international warning system. josh basile says he spent his whole life going to the beach. but never realized just how hazardous waves can be. >> this accident occurred because i let my guard down. i wasn't aware. my only worry at the beach was how much fun am i going to have? and i never thought of it as a vacation to turn out the way it

>> reporter: it was an unspeakable tragedy. >> a stupid snake got out in the middle of the night and strangled the baby. >> reporter: in july, this 2-year-old was killed by her family's pet, 8 foot long albino python, a snake that extorted out just inches long. when someone gets a little 20 inch baby it grows into this. >> it can grow into this as quickly as three or four years. >> but not only captive pythons that worry the florida whiildli officials. there are thousands free in the 750,000 acres of the florida wetlands we leased by their owners after they get too big to handle. >> how many pythons do you estimate are out here? >> about 150 to 175,000 out here. >> how many should be out here? >> zero. >> the burmese pythons are

native to southeast asia. in the last couple of years southeast florida has had an explosion in the number of sightings in the florida everglades. >> they can lay up to 50 or 60 eggs and they multifly quick and they have no natural predators. >> florida is club med for pythons. >> the problem is, they eat just about anything they can wrap themselves around. >> they eat our indigenous frogs and our snakes, our pigs, our deer, our alligators. they eat everything. >> this python strangled and eight a 6 foot alligator. >> so the fact that it will go after an alligator tells you it will go after anything. >> so the florida fish and wildlife commission instituted a program that allows for them to find and kill burmese pythons in the florida wetlands. the commission chairman, rodney baretto hoping to expand the program to catch and kill pythons for a bounty, a cash

reward. >> shoot them or kill them or take them or however we can eradicate them. i'm in favor of all of the a. >> baretto and others peer the pythons won't just stay in the everglades. >> whether it's georgia, the carolinas, down to new orleans, these are all areas that will soon be home to these large pythons and other large exotic reptiles if there's not a solution addressed some time soon. >> and because of that problem, the aproblem is getting attention in washington. bill nelson introduced legislation to ban interstate trade and importation of pythons and the "catch and kill" program netted the first victim. so, harry, one down and 999,999 to go. >> it's so interesting. you go into a pet shop or into the store and you see this. >> this is the size when they get them. >> you think, i'll have this. this is exotic and amazing-looking thing. and what happens?

>> and then they eat. and if they have the space they grow and they can get up to 10 to 15 to 20 feet and once they get to that size they become lethal to human beings. >> and when they get bigger and bigger people think, maybe it's not such a good idea. sit really just people releasing them into the wild over and over again and now they are just breed something. >> it's not native to this country, let alone, florida. the only way they got there is that human beings put them out there. the bounty program only has a limited effect but it's a way to get started. scientists are worried they will spread north. they have a research program going on to see how well they adopt to cold climates. >> we have grant from the pennsylvania wildlife association. how big is this? >> 8 or 9 feet. >> what do they eat? >> rabbits, pig, small goats,

cow -- >> well -- >> explain. this is a very serious situation. people had a pet like this in their home. >> right. >> it gets out of its enclosure and it's a danger to human beings? >> it certainly could be. there's a level of responsibility that every pet owner, no matter what type of living creature you need to pay attention to it's needs and with these animals, safety. same thing with dog. a dog could be potentially more dangerous if it's in the wrong hands. >> with a snake like this you have to know what you're doing. if you don't, you shouldn't have these. these are wild predators and they shouldn't just be in your home casually. >> not time for amateur hour. >> and you definitely shouldn't release them. >> absolutely not. not for any animal. it's dangerous for the environment and the animal. >> grant thanks for bringing the examples in for us this morning. >> my pleasure. >> eye-popping stuff. still to come, lance armstrong out of retirement and

license arm strong came out of a three-year retirement. one goal in mind to win the record 8th tour de france. he made it to the podium but didn't make his goal. elizabeth palmer has more. >> reporter: for the past three weeks lance armstrong looked like he might pedal his way to a new record of eight tour de france wins in a decisive comeback w after his battle with cancer. but as the cyclist sprinted in paris on sunday, it was armstrong's teammate, alberto contador who took first place. armstrong more than five minutes slower was third. at 37 years old he says, it's a result he's still proud of. >> i can't complain.

for an old fart, not so bad. >> with the race behind him, armstrong and his teammates raised a plastic cup to one of the most demanding sporting events in the world. they loop 220 miles around france and riders average 25 miles an hour over a course that's roughly the distance from new york to salt lake city. it includes 64 uphill sections. the most grueling, 13 miles long. armstrong made cycling history when he won the tour de france every year between 1999 and 2005. 2009 was his first tour de france after a four-year break. and it appears it was just a warm-up. armstrong says he's already planning his next win in 2010. elizabeth palmer, cbs news, london. >> he's already announced he's going to have a brand new team and not bad for an old fart. >> 37. >> don't forget, it was just a couple of months before this

>> and then we'll pick up the tire. make sure your knees are bent. always bend your knees when you pick something up. you're going to hold it up here. knees are soft. when i say soft they are bent. your legs and shoulders are apart. you're going to go down and drive through the floor and push it up. that's one. >> we only have a minute so lets get to it. >> stomach tight. lots of energy. you always want to have fun exercising. with whether you're 5 or 55. ready. one, two, three. one, two, three. two, we're going to number four. three, last one and four. >> awesome make sure your knees are bent. lift the tire. close its up. these tires are different. ready. down, drive through the floor, and push up.

it's a good time to look at what you've got. if you have some losers in your nonretirement accounts, stocks, mutual funds, and you sell them you get the benefit of a tax break and you get the cash. interest rates on cds, very low. 1%. if you need minimum desperately it wouldn't be the worse thing to cash it in. better than putting it on your credit card. >> so i'm really up against the wall. should i call my brother-in-law and ask to borrow some money? >> why not? the nice thing about borrowing from family members and friends is there's no rimt to how much you can borrow, beyond what they are willing to lend you. but to make sure your relationship stays intact, have it all in writing. how much, the repayment terms. what the interest rate is. if you don't want to do that and feel unconfidentable, a lot of people are borrowing from strangers. peer to peer. investors bypass the banks and go directly to you and lends money to you, cash-strapped

consumer and do it through these social lending sites. lending clst club.com. prosper.com. they are just growing. people don't want to go to big banks. they are unresponsive to their needs so they are looking for creative ways to get money. >> so lendingmoney.com? >> you go out and fill out a form and profile and then you could get up to $25,000 and the rates are good. 6 or 7%. >> and another thing people have done in the past that got them in trouble is using home equity lines. >> it's getting harder to do that. they are limiting stuff and reducing your lines if you have a home equity line of credit. but it is a low possible alternative to get cash and you have to have a sizable amount of equity. 20% or more. >> what's so interesting, people were saying, oh, no, don't go down that road. and now, reverse mortgages are starting to sound like a good idea. >> more people are doing that

dressing. so we have the olive oil and white wine vinegar. >> you have to incorporate that all together. >> that makes the chicken more crisp. >> all about recipes, they are all so simple. we have a teenage daughter that, even she can cook them, harry. nothing that we do is real difficult. so now that we got our nice italian dressing, the thing about the italian dressing that's so great, you want to put it on your chicken and let it marinade. if you notice, it's marinaded. >> would you live that in the fridge? >> you can, and cover it. >> for two hours tore night before? >> we typically like to bring it out like an hour or so before we go to the grill. >> and then we make our dry rub that we put on here. this is paprika, lots of paprika. sugar and onion powder. >> a lot of people are shocked that we are actually giving away our famous methods barbecue dry

rub in our book. they are shocked. >> you, too, can do this and have it. >> what the hell. let's just give it away. we might as well let everybody have it. i want you to put some of that on this chicken. >> do i have to rub it on there? >> you need the spice fairy! you got to wiggle it when you do it. you go to yell, woo! oh, yes! harry, you are down home with the neelys. we're taking the chicken and we're going back to the grill using an indirect heath, which is how we cook in memphis, with the heath on one side and cook away. put the chicken on, meat side down. >> you have like a baking pan? >> that's just a catch -- just to catch the dripping. and then this chicken has been on for about 45 minutes. so we flip it. and when we flip it, we let the

chicken sit for another 10 or 15 minutes and then we take our neely's barbecue sauce. and i'm going to ask the space fairy to come back because there's nothing we do -- we want to mop it down and we'll let this sit mopped down. this is the basic ingredients? >> let's move the cocktail sauce. water? >> watch this. >> great. >> sugar. >> a little brown sugar. and the paprika, onions, brown mustard. lemon juice and apple cider vinegar and you let that cook for three hours and that's it. and this is your finished product. >> and it's all perfect? >> that's right. >> i want to do this real, real quick. one of these guys right here. >> i saw you over this exercising. >> the secret ingredient in it,
