hayward. iran is still refusing to give up its nuclear program. that's causing some conflict between israel and american leaders. israel says that a military strike is still an option while the united states determined to make iran's first. >> israel and the u.s. agree that iran is in nuclear threat. tensions are building over the best way to deal with it. israel's defense minister says israel reserves the right to launch a military strike against iran to stop the country from developing a nuclear weapon. >> this is our policy. we mean it. >> reporter: on a visit to israel, u.s. secretary of defense robert gates robert gates urged leaders to be patient saying he is confident talks with teheran will eventually succeed. >> it is important to take every opportunity to try to persuade the iranians to reconsider what is actually in their own security interest. >> reporter: while the u.s. hasn't ruled out the use of

force, if necessary, the obama administration is played down the possibility. in teheran, iran's foreign ministry said that israel should get rid of its own nuclear arsenal and insisted iran's nuclear program is peaceful, aimed only at producing electricity. iran is so far rejected u.s. pressure to halt the nuclear aims. gates said that president obama remains hopeful iran will come to the negotiating table in time for the united nations general assembly in late september. but stressed america won't wait forever and will seek much tougher sanctions if talks fail. >> the president's offer is not open ended. >> reporter: gates reassured israelis that the u.s. will not allow iran to run out the clock while it develops a nuclear bomb. charlie d'agata, cbs news. >> a report on the deadly helicopter crash on i-70 is due out by the end of the week. however, a national

transportation safety board official says the report will not include a determination on what caused the crash. four people died. it happened on thursday night near hagerstown. police are trying to identify a body found inside of a burning minivan at the corner of arlington road and bradley boulevard in bethesda, maryland. lucille baur of the montgomery county police force explains what happened. >> the call came in at 3:56 for an auto fire. when officers arrived they found a gray minivan fully engulfed in flames. fire rescue respond pd and as they were extinguishing the flames a deceased body was found in the driver's seat. right now montgomery county police major crimes detectives are working cooperatively with the fire marshals office to determine the nature of the fire and the reason for the death. >> reporter: this morning's police investigation forced commuters to find alternate routes to work.

well, a hearing is scheduled on thursday for a white supremacist accused of killing a security guard at the u.s. holocaust memorial museum. an attorney for james von brunn has told the federal judge that his client is not well enough to come to court. prosecutors say the doctors told them the 89-year-old suspect might be able to come to court later in the month. james von brunn faces a first- degree murder charge and in the death of the museum guard stephen johns. james von brunn was shot and wounded by other guards. the fbi is now investigating. council member marion barry's actions. the washington examiner reports that the federal government is looking in to barry's decision to hire his then girlfriend donna watts. news of the $5,000 a monday contract leaked following barry's arrest earlier this month on stalking charges. the charges were later dropped.

registered for the past year. your new car must get at least 22 miles a gallon. >> i think it is a great thing they are doing. >> reporter: the government expects to spend a billion dollars on the incentive program. nothing could last forever and neither does the cash for clunkers program. it expires november 1st or when the money runs out. go to your nearest dealer and tell them that honest armando sent you. hate crime and burglary at a hair salon in anne arundel county has left residents stunned. police say that a witness called 911 after seeing someone break in to the heavenly hands salon on ricci highway. officers found numerous racist and derogatory symbols spray painted on the salon's floors, walls and counters. a combustible liquid was poured throughout the shop in what authorities say may have been an arson attempt. >> they pretty much saturated

everything with gas, the chairs, the dryers the station. >> could have started there and then just, you know, the whole shopping center could have been on fire. >> reporter: police say a air, hair clippers and a tattoo gun were stolen during the break in. the shop's owners say they plan to clean up and reopen as soon as possible. alexandria police chief david baker is due in court on wednesday to face drunk driving charges. police say baker was driving a city vehicle when he struck another car in arlington on saturday night. his blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit. baker is now on paid administrative leave but he could lose his job since driving a city vehicle while intoxicated is a fireable offense. >> this is behavior that i have never seen. it is something that has certainly not been a part of his career or even his ethics

and i have worked with him now 19 years and so the surprising thing is this even came up at all. >> the driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries. montgomery county police are investigating a shooting that occurred outside of a restaurant yesterday. it left two re d.e tishthngoo juin d.re outside ting happened the chuck. cheese near briggs chaney road in silver spring. police say two people got in to an argument in the parking lot and that led to gun fire. a woman, who was nearby, was hit in the leg. one of the two men was also shot and one area resident that we spoke with said that police are usual visible because of a spike in crime in that area. >> police are always constantly visible around here. that's one thing you can say about montgomery county police they are constantly visual here. they are parked here and here trying to stop whatever is

going on. >> both shooting victims should be okay. police are still looking for witnesses to help them in their investigation. and a new study shows that obese individuals spend more money on health care each year than their healthier neighbors. so now the centers for disease control is ready to tackle america's obesity problem head on. plans are being made at a three- day conference aimed at promoting new ideas and new policies. joel brown has more. or repiecety isn't just dangerous for your health, it is also bad for your wallet. new research shows on average an obese person spends an extra $1,400 a year on health care. that number is doubled in the last decade. now the centers for disease control is taking aim at obesity with a three-day meeting. part of a new push to encourage healthy eating and physical activity. >> it really matters what happens here. it matters whether we save this generation of kids.

it matters whether we save our country's health system. >> reporter: some doctors and health care experts hope by holding the conference here in washington it will send a strong message to lawmakers that if you want to fix the rising cost of health care you have to address obesity. the acting surgeon general told the crowd that message is coming from the american people, too. >> they want and they expect national leadership from washington in helping for a solution. >> reporter: among the new programs the cdc is pushing new ways to make sure healthy food and beverages are available and affordable and encouraging communities to find new ways to promote physical activity. doctors and health officials point to the latest data as evidence that the conference comes at a crucial time. new studies estimate about one- third of adult americans are obese. and that number continues to rise. cdc leaders hope at the end of the three-day session they will be able to identify ways that the government can help to

back to work for the signature crawley. he made headlines for arresting henry lewis gates in his home. crawley arresting gating on disorderly conduct charges but the charges were later dropped. four young children are among the 8 dead following a horrible accident on the parkway north of new york city. it happened yesterday afternoon and veteran first responders say it was one of the worst scenes they have ever seen. >> reporter: investigators in new york are trying to figure out how a driver got on a busy parkway going the wrong way in broad daylight. the tragic mistake led to a fiery collision that killed eight people.

>> i'm not familiar with any other threshes that reach the magnitude of this accident in recent memory. >> reporter: authorities say a 36-year-old mother in a minivan loaded with kids entered the taconic state parkway in to northbound traffic. her vehicle slammed in to an suv killing all three men inside. the minivan rolled down an embankment and burst in to flames the driver, her daughter and three young nieces all died. emergency crews were able to rescue the woman's 5-year-old son. >> several people were ejected, most of them children and we prioritized and we were able to save one young child's life. >> reporter: drivers who stood still for hours showed patients and compassion for the victims. >> horrible. the family, innocent kid answer lives taken. >> reporter: it was the second wrong-way collision on the road on the same day. five people were injured when a car went north on the
