house, an effort to tone down the rhetoric and turn the incident in to what this president says could be a teaching moment. in washington, i'm sandra endo,. we are following a developing story out of southeast dc. police are on the scene of a double shooting and two men were hit. shell casings are stone across the atlantic avenue southeast. at this point, police are not releasing their names or their conditions. we are keeping an eye on this and we will have more on 9 news now at 7 and on our website at wusa9.com. alexandria's police chief is on administrative leave following being charged with drunk driving. david baker, whose been on the force for 19 years, the last three as chief was arrested on saturday night for for dui. police say he struck another car while driving a city-ownedt court documents show he had a blood alcohol content of 19 that is twice the legal limit and he failed a field sobriety test and unable to recite the

alphabet. >> he should be held to a higher standard because he is a law enforcer and he shouldn't be doing that and shouldn't be in charge of he's going to be drunk and going around and doing that kind of thing. >> reporter: what about his job? >> he should be let go. >> shouldn't keep his job -- i want him to keep his job because he is a fantastic police chief. >> reporter: alexandria city employees can be fired for driving a city vehicle while intoxicated. the city manager is waiting for the result of an intern sal investigation before making his decision. good news for commuters in silver spring. crews reopened route 29 at fair land road. police had to shut down that stretch of 29 for much of the afternoon but trouble, a gas leak. it has been fixed now. no word on what ruptured that gas line ever the dc mother accused of killing her four daughters could find out as early as wednesday if she will spend the rest of her life in prison. both sides completed their arguments today in the banita

saw brittany alive and then recanting that. >> are you still haunted by this case? >> despite the officers apparent misstep, other trial watchers say prosecutors presented enough evidence to convince banita jacks. >> the fact she was in the house with the kids and nobody else was allowed in there. >> reporter: defense attorneys presented three witnesses in the case. >> i'm not allowed to comment. the gag order is still in place. >> it is a grisly autopsy photos and those from the crime scene that some observers say everything there is to know about how the girls lived and died. >> it checks me up to think at some point she couldn't have just said i can't deal with this. i can't handle this. i have to take a break from these kids. >> reporter: the judge said he needs until at least wednesday to go over all the evidence in the case and render a verdict. back to you. >> thank you. an autopsy is being done to determine how a woman died inside of her silver spring

home. police say the body of 23-year- old myra hernandez was discovered in her home on 8800 block of garland avenue this morning. medics tried to revive her and could not. at point foul play has not been ruled out. police know who the 45-year- old woman was whose body was found burning in a minivan in bethesda, maryland. she was found in the minivan at the corner of arlington road and bradley boulevard. the road is open but the investigation tied up traffic in the area for most of the morning commute. we have a followup now on that deadly helicopter crash on i-70. the national transportation safety board is expected to release a preliminary report as early as this week. that report will not include a determination on what caused the crash that killed four people. the small chopper went down on thursday night near hagerstown. and new cockpit voice recorder transports shed more light on lost went ear's deadly

plane crash near buffalo, new york. in it the co-pilot rebecca shaw said she was sick and would have liked to skip the flight. testimony during the hearing show that shaw and another pilot made several critical mistakes. h1n1 or somewhere appears to be poised to make a comeback as schools come back in to session but today maryland, school and health officials met to consider their options. >> it spreads as easily as regular flu does. we have seen that already. we know there is not a natural immunity to it. that's why we are seeing it being spread still at a time of the year when one does not expect to see the flu. >> reporter: a vaccine could be available in october. it will require two injections and it will not be available as a facial mist. keeping schools open will depend on parents keeping sick kids home, at least that's what officials predict for now. a story tonight about the

definition of the word closed. a fire chief insists he is not closing a local fire station even though no firefighters will be on duty to respond. semantics aside, neighbors are not happy. 9 news now digital correspondent, dave statter has more on how this could affect you. >> this is a high point senior high school just down the street from the caliverton fire station and one of the locations that relies on that fire station in case of an emergency. come this weekend, no more firefighters in that fire house, except the firefighter who will be using that place as an office. that means the fire trucks and ambulances will not be rolling. >> will there be fire engines responding out of 41. >> no. >> reporter: the chief admits no firefighters will be on duty at the calvertton station. >> will there be ambulance crews. >> no. >> is it closing the fire

the united states and israel agree that iran's nuclear program threatens stability in the middle east but both sides differ on how to tackle the problem. israel says it reserves the right to launch a military strike against iran to stop the country from developing a nuclear weapon. but the obama administration believes diplomatic channels will eventually succeed. iran insists that its nuclear program is for generating electricity, not bombs. today an indian court convicted two men and a woman for their role in the mumbai car bombing six years ago.

two taxis caringry -- carrying explosives killed 50 people. it is believed the three are part of the terrorist group tied to last year's attack that killed more than 160 people. a judge will sentence them next month. if you thought we had a tough time with asian snakehead fish, florida residents are nearly knee deep in pythons. the snakes are not indigenous to the state but people who can no longer take care of them release them in the wild. today a tampa bay snake trapper said he captured one of the largest found in the snake, 14 feet long. justin matthews found it curled up and hissing in a storm drain. >> i felt alone even though everybody was out here and when he turned around on me i really felt alone because i was back here where i kept my knife and it wasn't there and i was like uh-oh. >> it is believed 30,000

or thunderstorm. that's not going to be washout rains or anything like that but a possibility. and that's the case tonight. a 30% chance of a thunderstorm in the forecast. low temperatures right around 70 and it will be muggy. during the day tomorrow, a repeat today. mixture of sunshine and clouds. a chance of a shower or thunderstorm in the afternoon. the high temperatures in the upper 80s to around 90 degrees. so far tonight, most of the activity has been at the beaches. heavy thunderstorms along the delmarva beach and the coastline in to new jersey. severe weather reports from down there but around here things have been quiet. not say we are not going to get thunderstorm activity because there is a front that is to the northwest out of the mountains. first of all, the trigger mechanism for the storms along the beach is a trough or wind shift line. it has been there for a while. if you look to the northwest you can see a cold front that has been inching toward us over the last 24 hours. on the other side of the front the air is much drier. ahead of it is muggy. the boundary will come close to us tonight. a slight chance of a shower or
