urn the collar this week. vdot crews are working on the beltway. armando trull reports from annandale. >> reporter: hot lane construction is hot and heavy this week as crews begin to replace bridges, overpasses and interchanges along 14 miles of interstate 495 between the springfield interchange and the dulles toll road. there will be construction between 9:30 in the morning and 3:30 in the afternoon at a half dozen.s along the inner and outer loops. >> we will be here for a few weeks putting steel up on side and then go to the other side and we are working on 50, 66, we have a lot of work to do before the construction ends around the november time frame. >> that means you have to be prepared for late and shoulder closures. it will take place at these

boulevard and arlington road. the death is under investigation. an autopsy is being done to determine how a woman found inside of her silver spring home died. police say the body of 23-year- old myra hernandez was discovered on monday morning in her home in the 8800 block of garland avenue. medics tried to revive her but couldn't. at this point, foul play has not been ruled out. a man has pleaded guilty in a christmas eve attack in college park, maryland. wayne williams stayed in the hospital nearly a month after beaten outside of holy redeemer church. the 69-year-old lost sight in one eye. a judge sentenced the man to 28 years in prison after washington pleaded guilty to attempted murder. time for the first "living $mart" report of the morning and jessica has a preview of the day on wall street. good morning. >> good morning. maybe some smiles today because we have reached another nice

milestone on wall street. the dow starts above the 9100 mark for the first time since november and futures indicate the stocks should rise again at the opening bell. stocks in asia dropped slightly. investors caught between disappointing earnings and a spike in home sales that suggest the recession maybe easing. the dow rose 15 points yesterday to close at 2108. the nasdaq rose two and the s&p 500 finished up three. time warner is investing more money in aol. it has bought back a 5% stake the troubling internet company from google for $283 million. google brought the same stake for $1 billion in 2001. the deal sets the stage for aol's impending send off. ebay is going to slash fees by 20% for top-rated sell evers

alcohol and failed all of the field sobriety tests he was given and they determined he caused a crash along the 66 ramp. he had a blood alcohol level of .19, twice the legal limit. baker is on leave while an internal investigation is underway. bug constraints in prince georges county have led to a reduction in man power at some fire house and now the question remains has this led to a closure at these fire houses. at station 41 in calverton, no firefighters or ambulance crews will be onduty for the foreseeable future. despite the lack of man power, county officials say this doesn't mean the station is closed. >> it is -- isn't that in a sense closing the fire station there. >> no. >> why. >> because american nell is moving down the street. >> there is a reduction in services at the station, right. >> there is no reduction in service. they will be covered by

picking up a little light volume on the outer loop in to montgomery county, but you are still at speed there. and fend the district, on new york avenue, light volume but moving at speed between the times building and bladensburg road. here's andrea. you may want to think twice before you text behind the wheel. for the first time researchers conducted a study of drivers texting inside of their vehicles and what they found is alarming. susan roberts has the latest. >> reporter: texting while driving is even more dangerous than previously thought. >> people like -- not paying attention to the highway and they could hit something or you or i could get hit. >> reporter: in a study due out today, researchers at virginia tech transportation institute found truck drivers who text were 23 times more likely to get in to a crash or near crash. right before an accident, drivers took their eyes off the road for nearly 5 seconds. at 55 miles an hour, that is plenty of time to cover more than a length of a football

field. researchers say the findings should be applied to all drivers. >> i don't think that anyone driving should be texting whether it is car, motorcycle or truck. >> reporter: 14 states ban texting while driving including dc. the hasn't is a relatively new phenomenon and haven't been many studies looking at the real affects because string of transit crashes have shown how hazardous texting can be. the driver of this train in massachusetts said he was texting his girlfriend moments before his rear-end collision. the crash sent 60 people to the hospital. in california, 25 people were killed last fall in a commuter crash. the driver who also died was texting shortly before the accident. but the dangers aren't just associated with texting. >> hey, what are you doing. >> while less risky, the study shows dialing or talking on a cell phone can increase your chance of crashing the advice from researchers, ditch the diesterase action traction and keep your eyes on the road. 9 news now and wusa9.com.
