after that but we know at least one officer shot and killed a man. he was found with a gun and a knife. the two officers on paid administrate leave. we have a crew on the way to the scene and we will have an update from them as soon as we can. friday will be the last day on the job for van's police chief. david baker will step down less than a week after he was accuse of drunk driving. digital correspondent, armando trull has the story. >> alexandria chief of police david p. baker has submitted his resignation and informed me he will retire as chief. >> reporter: baker ended his tenure as alexandria's top cop after arrested on saturday night for a drunk driving accident. his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit and he failed several sobriety tests. he was driving a city suv when he hit a car trying to merge on to 66. the driver of the second car went to the hospital complaining of whiplash.

>> we are disappointed in what happened and the decisions made by chief baker the other night. >> reporter: sources close to the chief say it became apparent to the 40 year law enforcement veteran that given the circumstances of the accident and his arrest, to remain on the job would have compromised his ability to serve the city he protected for two decades. >> that was armando trull reporting ever the judge in the case of a woman accused of killing her four daughters should issue a ruling today. jacks is accused of killing the girls in their home and living with the remains for several months. the bodies with were discovered in january of tight by sheriffs deputies serving an eviction notice. the jacks case led to an overhaul of the district's social services department. former new york giant wide receiver plaxico burris is due in court today. the 31-year-old is scheduled to today before the grand jury investigating weapons charges. the charge stems from a

november 2008 shooting in which burress shot him in the leg with an unregistered gun at a new york city nightclub he faces up to 3 1/2 years in prison if convicted. this morning, federal agents are said to be in pakistan searching for an 8th man connected to a u.s.-based terror cell. the alleged ring leader daniel patrick boyd. he was arrested on monday in north carolina. he is charged with conspiracy to murder, kidnap, maim and injure persons abroad. boyd went to t.c. williams high school in alexandria in the mid-80s. his carolina neighbors reacted to the arrest. >> everybody in the neighborhood is just shocked. they are going through the house and probably bringing things out. >> just don't know this day and age. you just don't know who your neighbors are. >> reporter: boyd's mother s in the washington region. her listed address is at a condo in silver spring, maryland. when 9 news called they are residence, a man answered the

phone and refused to comment. boyd and the six other defendants are due in court tomorrow. a month after the deadly crash and the commute could be a slow one on the red line. metro has advice, take the bus. metro has been checking signals since the crash and that is causing the delays. a metro spokeswoman is reminding commuters the bus is another option and sometimes it can be faster than the train. metro says delays could go on l even after the investigation ends. fairfax county is cracking down on truck safety. officers and soldiers from ft. belvoir were doing inspections on tuesday in lorton. people living nearby have been complaining about the trucks there. out of the 23 truck stopped, 22 were ordered out of service because of safety violations. fall 13 schools across the district will undergo a renovation. not physically but of the curriculum. mayor fenty calls them feed- based catalyst schools. >> a fee based catalyst school

time for detailly hero central update. more of us are being everyday heros just by donating our time. a new report finds 61.8 million americans volunteered last year. that's up 1 million people from the year before. and it adds up to 8.1 billion hours of donated time the top volunteer activity is fund- raising. and with a closer look at our volunteering habits we are joined by kristin fisher. >> good morning. we just want to take those number and break them down a little bit to show you guys exactly what volunteering rates look like in our area. look at these numbers. from 2006 until 2008, in washington, d.c., 29% of residents volunteered which ranks them 265th -- 25th among the 50 state and washington, d.c. to maryland it is coming

in at 26 because 28-point 8% of residents volunteer in that state. and in virginia they are coming in at 27. 28.3% of the residents volunteer there. so you can see dc, virginia, maryland, all grouped in, 25, 26, 27, coming right in at the middle numbers right there. a lot of local heros in our commune but there are two in particular i want to highlight this morning. two prince william county police officers who saved a woman's life. here they are. this is officer daniel george carton and officer adam gardner. last saturday they responded to a domestic in progress call in woodbridge. a 30-year-old plan and his 26- year-old girlfriend were fighting outside of their home. when the officers arrived they talked to the boyfriend and neighbors but they couldn't find the girlfriend anywhere. they went inside the home and found the woman unconscious and hanging from the ceiling fan. a horrible story but the

h1n1 flu virus. she is 16 years old and lives in northwest washington. she was quarantined on a cultural trip to china with 20 r heotteens. nine tested positive but only leanna remains under quarantine. her mother is begging for her return. >> she is actually a kid whose pretty sunny disposition, pretty even keel. so the fact she's been sobbing her heart out over this quarantine and isolated in -- isolation in the hospital is a dagger in my heart. >> reporter: the family is in con stack contact with her over the phone. 9 news called the chinese embassy several times to request comments but got no response. virginia governor kaine says the report on the virginia tech shootings is being updated and include the fact that his mental health record vanished for two years the government wants to know why they vanished. one hopes the amended report
