also, we have a verdict and it is guilty. i'm audrey barnes. a judge finds banita jacks guilty on 11 counts of murder and child cruelty. the bodies of the girls ages 5 to 16 were found in their rented home during what should have been a routine eviction. the judge said everyone who saw the scene agrees they had been dead for months. prosecutors michele jackson saying they are pleased with the verdicts but it won't erase the horror of how the kids died. >> it was inflicted upon her own children. >> can't bring these kids back and you can't undo what the last moment of their -- the last month of their lives were like. >> reporter: jacks is facing life in prison when sentenced october 16th. >> we will pursue every avenue

open to us. one man dead and two officers on paid leave following an early morning shooting. police responded to an apartment on eagle's nest court in germantown after a disconnected 911 call. by 3:00 a.m. one of the officers had shot and killed a 39-year-old man. >> he has been identified as elci hernandez. >> reporter: weapons were found near hernandez' body. >> the knife is a carving knife with an 8 to 10-inch blade. the gun is identified as a bb repeller pistol which is a replica of a semiautomatic weapon. >> reporter: a shot from the officer's gun killed hernandez. both he and another officer are on paid leave during the investigation. police are still trying to find out exactly what led up to the officer-involved shooting. >> i'm sara walsh at redskins park where the players have

arrived. training camp is officially underway with the first practice being scheduled for tomorrow morning. players had to arrive at the complex today by 3:30 p.m. and ever since they have been tied up in meetings which will continue throughout the evening. workers here at the facility were furiously getting this place ready for tomorrow to accommodate thousands of fans and will surely show up for the 8:30 a.m. practice. jim zorn held a press conference today to say that michael vick is not going to be a part of their plans but couldn't contain his excitement that everyone on the roster will be ready to go. >> i don't think one guy tomorrow morning, i think everybody will be on that field ready to go. i do not have a list of anybody we are going to hold out. >> reporter: of course, with zorn saying everyone is ready to go he means everyone is healthy. they are missing one player. brian arapaho remains unsigned although jim zorn says at this point he is not yet concerned and he is optimistic that brian

will get a deal done soon. and just in. 9news now learned the dc council has given tentative approval to making big cuts and tax increases to close that multimillion dollars budget deficit. the council has been meeting all week on this issue and sources tell us during the closed meetings lawmakers temporarily agreed to cut $45 million from the school system. council members have also given tentative approval to increasing the sales, gas, cigarette taxes. a formal vote comes on friday. read more about it on bruce johnson's blog on wusa9.com. there are signs of movement in the health care reform effort. house lawmakers say they are moving ahead on their version of the legislation and a full house vote is planned for september. there may be a bipartisan compromise. the president out on the road again holding a town hall meeting in raleigh, north carolina, earlier today and right now he is at a similar

meeting in bristol, west virginia. update in the investigation into last month's fatal metro train crash. there were changes to the signal system just days before the crash june 22nd. the equipment was replacedded five days before that crash. that equipment communicates speed and distance between the tracks, train and operations control center and investigators are looking into weather replacing the impetus bond may have affected the system's performance. the man accused of the deadly holocaust museum shooting was indicted today charged with first-degree murder. he has been in the hospital ever since the incident. he has a court hearing tomorrow. we don't know whether he will be there. we posted the entire indictment against van braun on our website at wusa9.com. fears calming a bit in the

korean community after a brutal murder five days ago but the police work has been difficult because of language barriers. detectives are hoping a community meeting will help bring in more information. >> i really don't understand something happened. >> reporter: there has been anguish and fear in the korean community over the murder of an acupuncturists. >> very respected. very popular. on the day of the murder when people heard about this they were rushing to the scene. >> reporter: the 53-year-old woman was found stabbed to death in her home on hummer road on friday. she was found tied up in the bathroom. the news hit the korean times. >> it is vital that people come forward and help us. it is the only way we make these cases. >> reporter: to alleviate some of the anxiety fairfax officials held a meeting. the police chief told them it was not a random crime but

council member brian mclauren who lives up the road. mclauren is a car collector and claims there is no room up by his place since the mayor and four other council members beefed up the parking rules near his house. >> gave me no parking. they changed the rules to suit themselves. >> no one here is above the law. >> a new ordinance prohibiting more than one trailer or junked car on private property is on the way. all the them are up for re- election next march. >> re march. some of the stolen goods seized yesterday are back in the store where they were allegedly stolen from. it appears the six high- definition t.v.s were stolen from a wal-mart last month and they were among hundreds of items police seized yesterday when they raided the maryland computer exchange on landover road. investigators were back at that shop today seeing if they could match me some other stolen good reports from around the county. up next setting the record

struggle with mounting budget deficits. bruce johnson has been looking into the story and reports the dc treasury will get whatever funds are generated from a public auction of all of the loot. >> reporter: the dc government is now the proud owner of a rolls royce much like this one. it is part of the loot collected by walters and her co- conspirators from the revenue office. >> tons of items found in her house. some had new tags. she hadn't gotten around to using them. she was extraordinaryly greedy. >> reporter: millions of dollars in high end clothes are now stored in the u.s. marshal's warehouse awaiting auction with the proceeds going back to dc taxpayers. another key property will be the house to be auctioned off that walters lived in. across from rock creek park. why do you suppose the lights are still on after all this me is yingispathyi the electriciti

forfeited by hariet walters. the dc government planned to donate a fire truck and ambulance to a town. the mayor of the town said he sent $11 million to a friend of the mayor adrian fenty. the money was meant to handle the shipping costs. questions were raised about the equipment donation. the vehicles never got there. the mayor there says the town wants the equipment delivered or wants its $11,000 back. > [ speaking foreign language ] >> send the fire trucks to the city. >> the dc council and city inspector generaare investigating the whole matter and we will keep you posted. we get in touch for free.

emotionally upset when an animal is hurt than when a human being goes down. somebody says a human has a choice to do its nasty deed. the human in the wrong place at the wrong time had the decision to be there. anyone's heart would go out to poor dogs or any animals in the very same situation mishandled by humans. >> at least humans have the law on their side, lisa says. when animals are tortured and murdered the legal system laughs it off. you can't imagine how many times i've heard it is just an animal. anyone who has compassion has to fight hard to win any minor justice for animals and it is never, ever enough. i think michael vick might disagree with you on that last point but i do get the point and i will try to take a closer look at this one over the next couple of days. a whole different subject now. we did get this gem from our good friend karen in alexandria. it is called the way i see it.
