tell us they heard an explosion around 8:00 and soon thereafter the house was consumed by a two- alarm blaze. this is what several million dollars look like as they go up in fire and smoke. >> it will be a significant loss. >> reporter: the p.m. blaze totally gutted a mansion belonging to peggy cooper, a former president of the dc board of education. >> the residents are out of town from what i understand from neighbors. >> reporter: the fire raged over four hours. >> we have a second-alarm fire, pretty stubborn fire. >> reporter: firefighters say low water pressure and broken fire hydrants in this exclusive american university neighborhood severely hindered their efforts to contain the fire. >> all during the process, the units were converging on the scene. firefighters were struggling with water pressure. >> reporter: let me show you what kind of daunting task firefighters face. this is a fire hose. and it snakes all the way down that hill, around the block, to a fire hydrant.

stressed. because he's looking at me every day wondering if he's going to be able to attend stevenson. it is heart breaking. >> reporter: so we took the problem to the experts at the city council counseling group in washington. turns out in this economy it is a problem counselors are all too familiar with. >> we are seeing people are hurting. >> reporter: this counselor says this close to the deadline there is little they can do but there is a chance. >> i would encourage this family to contact the financial aid office again, if they haven't already done so just making a phone call and saying my kid really wants to go to this school. it is really important. we appreciate the aid you have given us but it just isn't enough. is there anything else you can do? >> reporter: so if you are like this family and your dead lain for tuition is either today or the next few days and the best thing to do is call the financial aid office directly and see if you can get an extension on they tuition deadline. if you have a longer time frame, a few weeks or months we
