dc fire investigators are sifting through the burned out mansion belonging to activist and former dc board of education president peggy cooper. the home is located on chain bridge road in northwest washington. our digital correspondent, armando trull , reports live from the scene. armando? >> reporter: well, j.c., this area is in the highest spot in washington, d.c. and for years, residents have complained of low water pressure. low water pressure in the sinks, faucets, showerrens and water hoses. in addition one fire hydrant in the neighborhood was not in working condition last night. when those factors combined it became, for firefighters, a daunting task to fight a two- alarm blaze. more than a dozen hours after the blaze began, firefighters were still dealing with hot spots as well as the faulty hydrants and low water pressure they say hampered their ability to put out the blaze. firefighters did the best they
12:02 pm
could under the circumstances but it will be a significant loss. >> hard to think you have to watch it burn for two hours before the pressure can handle the fire. >> reporter: dc firefighters responded quickly top this fire last night. but when they tried to hook up to a hydrant a few feet away they were unable to do so and had to hook up the hoses thousands of feet away down two different hills. >> they were using fire hydrants in front of my house and past the house and a lot of the hoses seem to be empty a good part of the time, laying flat. >> reporter: the two-alarm fire began at 8:00 last night. by midnight it had consumed a million dollar home and the valuable art collection. >> we are terrified. we stood outside of the home for several hours. the 3-year-old you just met said i'm scared and i don't want our house to melt. >> how safe do you feel at our home. >> at this point i'm a little concerned and i don't know what the solution is. sounds like they have to bring in a new water main. >> reporter: with thousands of feet of water hoses snaking

through the neighborhood, some residents needed a helping hand to get to work and others weren't so lucky. now, some of the latest information, they have opened low borrow road so traffic is coming in during part of the neighborhood and collected some water hoses. pete a spokesperson with the fire and ems has the latest. >> the fire is under investigation. we have had crews throughout the night. moments ago they were able to stop putting water on it. so the fire is extinguished but we have a lot of work to document as you mentioned we were extremely challenged last night because of the large volume of fire when we got here and the issues with pressure. we are working with our partners, wasa, the water utility and trying to sort that out. we have a pretty aggressive campaign with checking the hydrants and working with wasa on gallons per minute and flow and that sort of thing. we are sorting through that. but again that did cause some problem and we did have to
12:04 pm
really struggle with that during last night's fire. >> if there wasn't a water issue issue, do you think you could have contained the fire before it burned to the ground. >> we come to work thinking we can handle any situation that comes our way and that's our thought. if we had plenty of resource and we struggle with that. we haven't determined the cause of the fire yet but as we know it was a devastating loss not only to this home but to the community and to us and so we will try to sort through that and determine what the cause of the fire was and also look at ways we could have done a better job. >> how safe can people feel if a fire were to happen today or tomorrow the same thing wouldn't happen. >> the simplest thing to do is prevent the fire from starting in the first place. but the best thing a family can do is make sure you have a working smoke alarm. a lot of homes in this area have alarm systems. make sure you have an escape plan and should be noted this building didn't have a

sprinkler system. if you are fortunate enough to live in a building with residential sprinklers, certainly fire is usually extinguished or controlled in a mcable condition when we get here. this fire was not manageable when we arrived on the scene. it was in advanced stages and pretty big. that's the latest. armando trull live, back to you. we will look inside of this home. these are pictures courtesy of the -- well, that wasn't. that was the president. but there's the fire that just out of control last night. peggy cooper had an incredible amount of valuable art work destroyed in the fire. she is a well-known member of the washington community and a patron of the arts. she's one of the founders of the duke ellington school of the arts in northwest washington and at one time was an employee of channel 9. our heart goes out to peggy cooper.
