already hitting you hard enough you could soon be paying more if you drive or shop in the district. the city council is poised to impose several tax hikes. armando trull is live in adams morgan with more. >> reporter: jessica, after today's city council meeting, things might get more expensive for folks in the city when they guy cigarettes or spend any money in the district. >> reporter: the district has a population of 600,000 people and with a projected deficit of $660 million, that works out to $1 million perez dent. those rest residents and anyone who purchases anything in the city maybe slapped by a higher sales tax from 5 3/4 to 6%. >> i have a problem with higher taxes to reduce dc's deficit unless i have a sense they will do a more efficient job of managing their resources. >> reporter: if you think gas prices are high now, you may

northeast washington. it happened on rhode island avenue apartment complex. the building was say can. the roof collapsed and no one was hurt. there is no word on the cause of the fire. a dc family hopes someone will come forward with information on the beating death a former boxing champion. dukes said he tried to fight off two robbers who want his wallet. he was attacked on july 20th near the 2700 block of martin luther king avenue in southeast washington. he hung on for a few days before he died. his children said he won golden gloves in in the late ' 60s. he broke both hands in his last fight. the arraignment of a man accused of killing a security guard is set for september 2nd. james von brunn an 89-year-old white supremacist was due in court yesterday but it was cancelled. he faces a seven-count indictment and could get the death penalty if convicted.

week ago and there is fear the $1 billion budget is already depleted. tara mergener has the latest. >> reporter: americans are turning clunkers in to cash much quicker than anyone expected. the $1 billion program has been so popular there's concern it will run out of money less than a week after it began. >> like reneging on the deal, i think. they promised something they should go through with it. >> reporter: in a late-night statement, the white house tried to calm fears saying it is evaluating all options to keep the program funded and all rapid transactions will be honored. michelle says they need to pump more cash and run it in november. >> they should find the money somehow somehow and do it what's another billion? >> reporter: congress approved the program last month to boost slumping auto sales and remove inefficient cars and trucks from the road. drivers can get up to $4,500 by trading in old vehicles for a

it is part of an effort to reduce the budget deficit. 9 news now digital correspondent, armando trull is live with the story. >> reporter: after today's dc city council meeting the folks in in the district spending money may have to bring more money to spend it. buying gas in the district may soon cost you an extra 3 1/2 cents a gallon. the new tax would be 23.5 cents. >> i worry about the station owners because there aren't many places in the city where you can go to get gas. >> reporter: a pack of cigarettes may cost an extra 50 cents. >> not going to generate the money they expect it will generate. i think people will go across the river to buy cigarettes and black market will be an issue. >> i wouldn't have proposed tax increases. it's not like how i like to do the bug but that's the council's prerogative if that's how they want to structure the budget.
