from the first local station with news in high definition, this is 9news now. >> thanks for joining us this saturday. our top story is the cleanup from a tornado that struck the a town in frederick county, maryland yesterday. no injuries reported. digital correspondent just returned from the area hardest hit. she is here in the studio. how are residents coping? >> they are doing the best they can. the national weather service is still in the mist of assessing the damage and categorizing it. neighbors are assessing damage and cleaning up today. it is the signature sound of cleanup in the aftermath of tornadoes. >> it sounded like the roof

was getting ripped off, which it was. >> it was no different from the twister that carved a destructive path through the town of iambsville, maryland, where folks are shaken. >> there are leaves and rocks coming through the windows. >> he grabbed his dog and hit the floor. >> i was hoping it wouldn't take me out of the house. >> alex tells a similar story. >> i was looking up expecting the house to just be gone. >> hundreds of trees uprooted and snapped like twigs. >> it sounded like trash cans banging over your head. >> debra headed for cover. >> i saw debris flying across the yard and i drove straight up into the hay field. debris was following behind me. >> debra's is one of the hardest hit areas, losing four out houses, including this barn, which crumbled in the face of this tornado. cement walls were no match for the tornado. >> i was distraught over the

trees. as i walked around the property to see the barn, it was sad to see it decimated like this. but you know, it can be rebuilt. nobody was hurt. >> what's done is done and hopefully i can get it put back together and go on. >> you can see from that video that there was a clear path to this twister. true to tornado form, it showed no mercy on some homes, while a few homes away, they remained untouched. they have not come out with a dollar amount with the damage done. the good thing is, there were no reports of injuries. thanks a lot. tony pan joins us from the weather center. we had two tornadoes that hit yesterday. >> that's right. two crews, one to carol county, maryland, and one to the one you were just talking about in iambsville. let's take a look at that. an ef-0, that's in carol county. the winds 75 to 85 miles per

hour with that one. the one that we were just covering, near 100 miles an hour. classified as an ef-1 in iambsville, maryland. these weak tornadoes have a tendency to bounce along the ground, so they can destroy one house and leave the one next to it untouched. it's a matter of luck. these often don't stay on the ground very long and that was the case with both ofthese. they stayed on the ouon lndgr g ge. gh to cause ma let's switch it erov to live ov doler 9,000. weun rs a colede unthrs ou tht e. one south ofand erd one around the airport. both of those could produce heavy rain, but no severe weather to talk about tonight. we'll talk more about that, check the forecast for the rest of the weekend when i come back in a few minutes. >> turning elsewhere, robbers target a 99-year-old woman in a midday attack in r hehome. police heas ngkie arr asking fo public's help. lindsey is live in silver spring right now with that story. lindsey. >> this woman is turning 100

this month and police tell us the robbers were able to gain access to her apartment by first calling her on the phone. she got a phone call, the man said he was outside, could he help her out by taking a survey. >> it happened around 2:30 yesterday afternoon at these apartments along mckinnie avenue in silver spring. she opened her door to be friendly, to take the survey, and then was pushed inside, forced into a chair while they rummaged through her apartment and took cash and identification cards. >> police spokeswoman says they have a limited descriptio all they know for sure is that the suspects are two men. this was truly an act of cowardous. >> the victim was not beaten, she was kept in the hospital overnight. people in the neighborhood are shocked. >> that could be my grandmother, my mother, or it

could be me. you don't have to be old for that to happen to you, but to attack someone who is defenseless, put all this time here on earth and for something like this to happen, it makes me angry, very angry. >> now i spoke with the woman as she arrived home from the hospital. she is not ready to talk on camera about her ordeal. she is being cared for by friends. and again, montgomery county police say if anyone has information, give them a call. i'm lindsey mastas. >> let's hope they get results on this one. a homeless man triggers the evacuation of one of the country's biggest airports. he entered the airport with a fake bomb inside a bag. the incident affected travel plans for thousands of passengers. flights were delayed and vehicle traffic came to a halt. >> nobody said anything.

it has been total chaos. it is bizarre. i never experienced anything. i talked to agents. nobody seems to know what is going on. >> it is a false alarm, because sometime they will be wrong. >> main terminal was shut down for three hours. relatives of the man brought him a ticket to fly them to oakland, ptcalifornia. the man isem naotllio y st d.urdi>>be re te> ghfifirs are back on the scene today where wednesday's massive fire ar destroyed the northwest washington residents. a former dc board of education president. firefighters stood watch as the safety precaution while the restoration and cleanup crews gathered belongings from the residents. the fire caused millions of dollars in damage and destroyed a valuable art collection. 62-year-old was away on vacation when that fire started. >> the national transportation safety board completed its testing. it is a sight of a fatal

collision. officials say friday that they have released the area between the fort totten and takoma stations back to metro. they say that as part of the investigation, ntsb continues to examine components from the system in metro's lab and its operations control center. metro says it will now begin replacing track circuitry, which is on the red line. work is expected to take a month. metro riders should expect some delays to continue on the red line. but today marks the redskins first full workout in pads. the first chance for the jets signed top pick to show his stuff. brian aracpo inked a five year contract and missed two practices. >> i don't like missing workouts. >> sara walsh has the complete story from training camp today coming up later. still ahead on 9news now this saturday, sir paul mccartny

stage in northern y. today. >> stage one hypertension. very high. >> the event featured demonstrations on personal defense and gun safety. representatives from the loudoun county sheriff's office, virginia state police, the national rifle association were on hand to give people advice and resources. according to the national coalition against domestic violence, one in six women have been the victim of rape or attempted rape. >> dozens of dc residents took part in free health screenings today in ward seven. today's health fair is at the safeway at minnesota avenue. participants were screened for high blood pressure, diabetes, and dental problems. the screenings were provided by the medical center foundation, the nonprofit organization is dedicated to improving health and wellness education for

possible on sunday. it's not going to rain all day, but keep that in mind and early next week should be fairly quiet. partly cloudy skies tonight. put a 20 or 30 percent chance for a shower or thunderstorm in the picture. 80% of you will have dry weather. low temperatures near 70. sunset at 8:19. during the day tomorrow, raise the chance for rain up to 50 or 60 percent. scattered showers and thunderstorms. high temperatures in the mid 80s. it's going to be humid. let's switch it over to live doppler 9,000. there's two storms out there tonight and elsewhere, it is dry. this storm here down near alexandria, it is walking its way to the east. it could come close to fedex field. i think it will stay south of there. it's going to be a close call for all of the 60,000 people heading to the concert. this storm may affect the concert, at least at the beginning. it should pass by. it's not going to rain all night. this storm up here, same thing.

south of bwi, movi east very slowly. both of those storms will drop. heavy rain, don't expect any severe weather. elsewhere, it is dry. let's switch it over to the weather computer. we'll take a wider view and see the isolated nature of these storms as they pop up in the heat of the afternoon. there's plenty of moisture for the atmosphere to work with. the dew point is up close to 70. air temperure, 84 . g inrelative humidity erdo wnrae aridity rm wa er down to the south. it's 90 in fredericksburg and 86 in winchester. 83 degrees at the naval air station. here's the weather set up. all the severe weather on friday is stalled off to the south. there's another one coming in from the west. showers and thunderstorms fired up through the valley. and even back towards dallas. this is the front that will come through tomorrow with our chance for showers and thunderstorms. and then that will stall south of us and keep a shower in the forecast for monday as well.
