. this is 9news now. >> hello. i'm bruce johnson and thanks for joining us this saturday night. first tonight, no serious injuries but lots of damage and a major cleanup after a confirmed tornado struck the town of ijamsville in maryland trees were snapped or toppled by wind. we have more on the story. >> reporter: it's the signature sound of cleanup in the aftermath of tornadoes. >> it sounded like the roof was getting ripped off, which it was. >> reporter: it was no different than the twist ter that carved a path through the town of ijamsville, maryland where folks were shaken. >> there were leaves and glass and rocks coming through the window. >> reporter: he grabbed his dog and hit the floor. >> i was hoping it wasn't going to take me out of the house. >> reporter: he tells a similar story as he ran down to the basement. >> i literally was lookingp u expecting u the house to just be

gone. >> reporter: hundreds of trees uprooted and snapped like twigs. >> there sounded like trash cans banging over your head. >> reporter: debora de wit headed for cover. >> i just saw debris flying across the yard and i just drove straight up into the hay field while debris was following behind me. >> reporter: debora, is one of the hardest hit properties in the area, losing four outhouses, including a barn. spement walls were no match for the tornado that turned through her yard. >> i was distraught over the trees and then as i walked around the property to see the barn, it was sad. and to see is decimated like this. but it can be rebuilt. nobody was hurt. >> what's done is done. and hopefully i can get it put back together and go on. >> reporter: and you can see from that video that there was a clear path to this twister. true to tornado form, it showed no mercy on some homes while a

few feet away some homes looked untouched. the frederick county emergency management team has not come out with a dollar amount for the damage. there was no reports of injuries. >> that's right. thanks a lot. tony pann joins us now from the weather center. and it was not one but two tornadoes. >> that's right. the crews went out to a couple areas in maryland where they believe another tornado touched down. two tornadoes confirmed. one in ijamsville an ef1 with winds near 100 miles an hour on the scale. and the one in gam ber, maryland, that's in campbell county ef0, winds between 75-85 miles an hour. they send the crews out there and look for circulation of the trees. if all of the trees are falling in one direction, then it's straight line wind. if it's twisting in the trees, then they know it's a tornado and that's what they found. so damage from twoores tnado on

to do just that. but the only thing they know about the two suspects is that they are men. lucille bauer with montgomery county police says those men called lydia on the phone. >> a man said i'm outside your door. could you step outside and do a survey with us. >> reporter: when she went to the door, they forced their way inside. >> they rummaged through her apartment and took cash and identification cards. >> reporter: her friend is in her 90s and says she's afraid the suspects may come back. >> because she is about in the same condition i am. >> reporter: east says all she can do is be w cautious and keep her own door closed to anyone she doesn't know. >> it makes me feel bad. and i'm by myself too. it's pitiful. >> reporter: in silver spring, i'm lindsey mastis. >> police urging anyone with information about this to call

the police. that number is 240-773-5115. elsewhere, a homeless man triggers the evacuation of one of the busiest airplanes. he entered the main terminal of laguardia airport this morning with a fake bomb inside a plan. it interrupted travel plans as vehicular traffic to the airport came to a halt. >> nobody has said anything. it's total chaos. i've never experienced anything. i've talked to agents. nobody seems to know what is going on. >> bomb scare. they can't hope it's a false alarm every time because sometime they'll be wrong. >> the main terminal was shut down for about three hours. he had a ticket for ae flightghd y.am>>o family. firefighters were back on the scene today of a blaze that destroyed the dc mansion of former dc school board president

and art patron peggy cooper. the fire department are trying to figure out why there wasn't enough water pressure wednesday night from the nearby hydrants to battle that fire early. a restoration and cleanup crew collected what is left in the rubble. the loss will be in the millions. a valuable art collection is now gone. a mansion on claim bridge road is destroyed and the 62-year-old was away on vacation at the time of the fire but she's back and she has reported that she's hank thankful that nobody was -- thankful that nobody was hurt. a fire forces hundreds from a flee market. thick black smoke could be seen from miles away. no one was injured. the fire began in a warehouse. no word tonight on the cause of that fire. the national transportation safety board has completed its testing of train control equipment at the site of that fatal metro train crash in june. metro says it will begin replacing track. the work should take about a

month. metro riders should continue to expect delays on the red line. if you're still hoping to take advantage of the federal government's cash for clunkers incentive, you're not too late. the white house says deals reached this weekend will count even through the week old program -- even though the week old program is almost out of money. that was good news for some. he drove his 1995 chevy van some 250 miles from his home in maryland to new jersey where he traded it in for a new one. >> so how much of a discount are you going to get? >> $7,000 altogether once the -- owe from the sticker price. >> the house has already voted to put another $2 billion into the program that encourages trade-in for fuel efficient cars. the senate hasn't acted yet but it likely to take action sometime next week. if you're not going to trade in your car, have you doctored using soda pop in -- considered using soda pop instead of

women safety took center stage in northern virginia today. >> that's a girl. >> personal defense and gun safety was the theme at the sterling community center. representatives from the loudoun county sheriff's office, virginia state police and the national rifle association were on hand to give attendees instructions and resources where needed during the two-hour seminar. according to the national coalition against domestic violence, one and six women have been the victim of rape or attempted rape. while they debate health care on capitol hill, dozens took part in free health screenings today. participants were screened for

high blood pressure, diabetes, prostate and dental needs. the location was a safe way store. the health screenings were provided by the united medical center foundation. it's a nonprofit with the goal of i am prufling health and -- improving health and awareness is. we're reporting tonight that three americans have been detained in iran. they war parentally hiking in iraq's kurdish reason when they crossed into iranian terror re. we have more on this story. >> arrested three americans. >> reporter: iranian tv is saying three detainees are under arrest. >> they have been detained for illegal entry into iran. >> reporter: reports say the two men and a woman were in a popular hiking area in the kurdish region of northern iraq where the border is not clearly walk. the trio may have mistakenly wandered into iran. their last words were we are surrounded by armed men. >> the state department says it is working as hard as it can to

buildings in turkey went seriously wrong today. instead of collapsing, the building rolled over on to it roof. the building eventually came to rest. the old flower factory had been empty since the 1980s and was being cleared to make way for a shopping center. fortunately nobody was hurt. >> we put these on the air a lot the demolition and we talk about how precise you have to put the explosives to do that. >> yes. >> and how if you mess up just a little bit. >> yes. >> that is what happens. >> that's what happens. >> and we're going to add to something to that. the expensive bottle of wine, $20,000. >> a $20,000-bottle wine those guys took.

away from us. elsewhere things are quiet. the north side of town it'st ngieheylutar n mheanylardand nog on. but a chance for showers and thunderstorms overnight. let's switch it over to the weather computer. take a look at the three-day trend going through the rest of the weekend. showers and storms will stay with us off and on through tomorrow it looks like. i don't think it will be a complete washout on sunday but a pretty good chance for rain. slight chance for showers. specifically for tonight the chance for shower or thunderstorm it's going to be muggy. the temperatures will drop down close to 70 degrees. during the day tomorrow, chance for showers and storms. but a peak of sunshine will get the temperature to push into the 80s. southwest wind at about 10-15 miles an hour. at the top of the hour, national airport 76 degrees with a dew point of 70. that's pretty thick. it feels a little soupy outside. other temperatures basically upper 70s to around 80s. 79 in fredericksburg.

74 at bwi. but 80 degrees at the top of the hour in hagerstown. here is the weather setup. the front that came through yesterday and triggered all of the weather is stalled off to the south and we're watching another system coming in from the west. another front dropping out of the great lakes. and this is the one here that is going to give us our showers and thunderstorms on sunday. right now it's producing showers and storms from detroit all the way back down to atlanta and dallas so it will slowly march its way towards us. that will stall keeping the slight chance for a shower in the forecast. it looks like it will clear up on tuesday. temperatures are going to stay about the same all the way through the middle of the week. mid to upper 80s. there's going to be some more thunderstorms on wednesday. and then i think we're going to string three dry days in a row. how about that. thursday, friday, saturday and it will get kind of warm going into next weekend with high temperatures around 90 degrees. but fairly decent chance for rain tonight and probably on sunday as well. >> okay. thanks, tony. fairfax county is beating out two canadian cities to host
