"this broadcast realtime captioned by becky lyon." i'm bruce johnson. thank you for joining us this sunday night. a near 20--year-old mystery is over tonight. since 1991 the family of a navy pilot shot down on the first night of the gulf war had been uncertain of his fate but tonight the remains of captain mike scott spyker has been solved. >> i'm glad they finally found closure, painful though it may be. >> reporter: reaction tonight from the retired admiral tom brooks . 18 years the tradition of leaving no fallen commrad behind holds true today as the navy says remains found in iraq have been positively identified as capital mike scott spyker. >> it is essential they know they are not going to be left behind. >> reporter: but the two-decade search has not gone without

critics from family, friends and lawmakers. spyker was shot down january 17, 1991. his wreckage was found but with no body the navy changed his ki in action anthd en switched it to missing and captured. some believed his initials were carved into an iraqi prison. >> i wonder to myself is it some kind of cruel prank, cruel joke. >> i would like to say hello to my wife joanne and my wife and daughter. >> reporter: the 33-year-old pilot was hoped to be found alive. looking back admiral brooks says losing one of their own on his watch was the hardest part of his job. >> i strongly empathize with the commanders who would have had to have told the spyker

family of what had happened. it is a very, very difficult thing to do. >> reporter: the navy learned from witnesses that a desert tribe had buried spyker's remains which is part of their culture. bones and skeleton fragments have been recovered and were sent to the armed forces institute of technology in rockville, maryland. >> thank you. today turned out to be a tough day for delta and north west airlines. a delta flight was about to take off from regan international airport when the plane experienced engine failure. fire and rescue equipment were brought out to the runway as a precaution. passengers and crew got off the plane safely. we are told they are being put on another plane. meanwhile a north westjet blew five tires as it landed at the minneapolis, st. paul airport. that incident forced airport officials to close one runway for several hours. 15 employees were on the plane. no passengers on board. the plane was being operated for north west by delta air

lines. in yet another incident a second north west flight had to make an emergency landing in rochester, new york. a fire extinguisher went off in the cargo area. no one was hurt. thousands of homes are without power this weekend after wicked weather came through. heavy rains and strong winds knocked out power to more than 50,000 customers while flooding several homes. >> all of a sudden the rains were just so high and the creek took all it could take and it just overflowed into the backs of the houses. i have lived here since 1982. i have never seen anything like this. even through the hurricanes. this was incredible. >> i saw the water coming up a couple inches from the floor of my car. so i ran out, moved my car, moved her car and then -- everything then flooded.

the street was 5 feet deep in water. a lot of people lost their cars. >> officials shut down several roads in the region due to floodings and sink holes. rescue crews have been pulling people from stranded vehicles. there is no word thus far on injuries. severe weather hit parts of maryland this sunday. some residents may have felt like a tornado hit their neighborhood. >> i was in my living room and looked out the front door and i saw tree limbs. looked like a rna toado to m thenal l of se h t ou t house got tore up. >> today's storm comes just e go daafy ter cotwo nfirmed tornadoetouched down in frederick. some firehouses were empty in prince george's county as new staffing plans for firefighters started today. volunteer firefighters weren't able to completely staff stations where the county used to have career firefighters. digital correspondent dave statter has the story. >> reporter: the bells were ringing inside the capital heights firehouse sunday

afternoon but there was no one there to answer the calls. >> right now there arnotw firefighters in that firehouse? >> that's ridiculous. >> reporter: two fire engines and an ambulance sit in the station but the equipment didn't leave the firehouse for more than half a dozen emergencies. the paid firefighters were removed from the capital station for good as part of the plans in prince george's county. with considering budget constraints they think this is more efficient. jones believes there are too many firehouses too close together. a mile up the road from this firehouse there is another firehouse. near capital heights a staffing station about a mile to the east. but go another direction from capital heights and there is a larger coverage gap. just a mile to the south there used to be a firehouse on hillside but the volunteer department went bankrupt and was shut down a decade ago.

a few miles to the south and west of the capital house station is a volunteer firehouse. today it too failed to respond on fire and ambulance calls. >> there is no reason why in this community we shouldn't have 100 people lined up to volunteer. >> reporter: last thursday the mayor called for citizens to join the ranks of the 16 current volunteers. on sunday both capital heights and boulevard heights were unable to respond to emergency calls. they sent vehicles from three, four times farther away from the emergency. dave statter 9news now and wusa9.com. > capital heights had volunteers available for seven hours. at boulevard heights theythad fistngaf foenr thnegine enis evening but this evening but r thfo e bu ame.for the bushot du leopringshot during a eay early morning roery in maryland. 3:00 a.m.

it happened at the 6700 block t be nonlife threatening injuries. no motive or suspect at this time. they went to play bingo but got caught up in a shooting spree. bingo players went running for cover when a man started shooting up the lucky day bingo parlor in birmingham, alabama, this weekend. >> armed with a shotgun and handgun, the suspect fired into the ceiling several different times saying everybody get out, this is a robbery. the suspect immediately went to the cashier's cages, fired a round into the locked mechanism to gain entry into where the tellers were at. >> i don't support the bingo at all. i feel more secure now with them havg security guards. >> reporter: security officers confronted the robber. when he pointed a shotgun at him they opened firing killing him.

the suspect died on the scene. there were nearly 50 people in the bingo parlor at the time of the shooting. tax increases topped sunday talks this morning. obama administration officials refuse to rule out raising taxes to reduce a trillion dollars deficit and fund an overhaul of the health care system. treasury secretary tim geithner said the deficit will have to be reduced for the country to prosper long-term. the president's economic team also says the administration will work with congress to extend unemployment benefits for millions of americans who still can't find jobs. >> the white house says it will suspend the cash for clunkers program if the senate doesn't approve another $2 billion for the plan. the current $1 billion pool could already be gone. house voted to add another $2 billion on friday. some republicans are now questioning the government's role of providing incentives for auto sales. don young's wife has died.

lou young was 67 years olds. a spokesperson for the alaska republican said young died early this morning at the couple's great falls, virginia, residents much residents. the cause of death has not been determined. kevin costner escaped unharmed after a stage collapse at a music festival in alberta, canada. one person was killed, 75 others were hurt. the day's performances at the big valley jammereeee in alberta were canceled. firefighters were containing the fire. >> when the investigator arrives we will meet and determine a tblan of action for essentially bringing it to a close. i'm estimating at this time it will take well into the day to complete both of those

operations. >> fire investigators in california say arson is to blame for an early morning fireh h destroyed a strip mamall. firefighters have been working all day to contain that blaze. fire damaged 20 businesses and caused more than $1 million in damage. nobody was hurt. dc mayor adrian fenty told homeowners they can expect answers as to why firefighters were not able to save the house of peggy cooper. her mansion on cambridge road north west burned down as firefighters watched unable to get enough pressure for neighborhood fire hydrants. they are now looking into just what went wrong. it is the latest incident involving low level water levels when fighting fires in the district. >> we will put together a public report that fills out in specific detail exactly what was known to the government, what was done, what was not done and how that impacted the

fire of last night. >> damage hasbeen set in the millions of dollars. the loss includes some rare and expensive artwork. israeli prime minister and his cabinet members today condemned a shooting at a club for gay teens that left two dead and eleven others wounded. hundreds of protestors took to the streets to mourn the victims. authorities are still searching for the gunman tonight. they say he entered the club saturday night dressed in black and began shooting with an automatic rifle. it is being called the worst attack ever of homosexuals in israel. >> it is not safe for anyone and if someone can give themselves the option to state hate and state things against the gay community, today can see the pictures and see what this can lead to. >> four of the wounded are said to be in serious condition. israel's only openly lawm ercay lawmaker called the attack a

hate crime. tonight the swiss embassy in tehran is working to learn about three hikers that were detained in iran. they contacted a friend on friday saying they had wandered into iran by mistake and were surrounded by troops. one man called his grandmother in california this weekend and he said he wasn't accompanying his friends on the hike because he wasn't feeling well. >> he didn't go with them when they went. he says they didn't go over the border. it is just one of those things where -- in the article it said they found a bottle of whiskey with their stuff and he said no, there wasn't any whiskey there. >> the state department is asking the swiss embassy to intervene on baffle of the hikers. still ahead on 9news now

the number of americans 65 years age or older is expected to double in the never few years. they require elderly drivers to take a road test when they renew their licenses. lawmakers in massachusetts are considering the new bill. a group says doctors should decide if an older person should be allowed to drive. >> we know if we improve the

medical recording systems there will be a reduction in fatalities. we know if we require in person renewallals there will be a reduction in fatalities. >> a person gets road tested at 16.5 and then never again. that's crazy. >> according to the national highway transportation safety administration by age 80 elderly drivers are just as likely as 17 year olds to be involved in fatal crashes. strong winds fanned intense forest fires in the spanish canary islands. 50 homes have been destroyed, 5000-acres charred. thousands of residents have been forced to flee. investigators say several fires started at the same time. they are now looking into whether the fires could have been man made. a family is thanking their neighbor after he rescued them from their burning home early sunday morning. although they have only been neighbors for about three months, adrian brown said he didn't think twice before he

rushed in to save his neighbor. >> we were watching t.v. like 1:00 and my wife said she heard something outside the window and i looked and said there was nobody out there. then she said it again and i looked out the window i said oh, my god his house is on fire and it was just an explosion. >> yelling my name, he saved me. woke me up out of my sleep. >> my neighbor was screaming get out of the house. so i bust open the door with my arm. i ran back inside and grabbed my wife an kids and made it out. thank god. >> i couldn't get out of the house. there was no way. the fire was so bad there was no way. all i could do was put myself on top of the baby and just know that i had to stay on top of him. >> the fire was high. we both got low and just in the doorway i could spot them. he grabbed her leg and he was pulling her. once he got her close to the doorway i grabbed her and the baby and brought him out. >> the family was transported to the hospital for smoke

inhalation. everybody should be okay we are told. just in time for back-to- school virginia shoppers can save with tax free shopping days. starting this coming friday shoppers at virginia stores will be exempt from the 5% sales tax on school supplies priced $20 and higher. and on clothing and shoes priced up to $100. annual sales tax holiday ends in a week on august 9th. dc and maryland canceled tax free shopping days because of the economy and mounting deficits. tomorrow dc mayor and the police chief will kick off national night out. the event is part of a nationwide effort to combat crime. the mayor will also get some details about a $12 million grant to expand community policing. new york city woman suing to get her college tuition back because she says she hasn't been able to find a job. trina thompson says the office at monroe college hasn't provided her with the leads and career advice she promised so

>> who knows. >> how do you side? tony, i've got something for you? >> i think i found something you do really well. >> i've got this contest for you. they made it on channel 9 news, right? >> absolutely right. >> if not anything else they made it on the news. weather wise we had big thunderstorms the last couple days. i think things will be relatively quiet going into the beginning of the workweek. i don't expect trouble for the monday morning commute. temperatures up to about 90. that's where it is supposed to be. if i had to put a mark on it i would say 30% chance for a thunderstorm on monday. same thing tonight. you could still hear a little rumble of thunder as you head off to bed. certainly no big deal. no severe weather. low temperatures between 65 and 72. again, i think most of it will clear up by the time we get into the monday morning commute. during the day tomorrow. partly sunny skies. 30% chance for a thunderstorm in the afternoon. warm kind of humidity but nothing unusual for this time of the year. 84 to 89 sunrise tomorrow morning at 6:11 a.m.

pretty good rains today. 4300thth4300ths. we are catching up at the end of the july and beginning of august and we can still pick up a few thunderstorms here on the radar hugging the river between the northern neck of virginia and southern maryland. if you are watching down there you got rain at your house i'd say take another half hour, maybe an hour to start clearing up for you guys. this is all ground clutter around here. so around the city and north of town things are pretty much dry. there are a couple of little sprinkles coming out of the mountains and that's because we still have to wait for a cold front to go through. that should go by probably around 2:00 a.m. or 3:00 a.m. in the morning. after this pushes off the coast things should be quiet like i said for the monday morning commute but the atmosphere behind it will still be a little unstable and this thing will actually stall just off it our south so that's why we keep a slight chance for a shower, thunderstorm in the forecast for monday afternoon. 76 degrees the top of the hour

at national airport. thefer is still rather humid. the dew point 72. that produces a relative humidity of 88%. that humidity will go down a little bit as soon as that front goes by. already back into the upper 60s in culpepper . everybody will settle from 65 to 72, 73 degrees by tomorrow morning. we expands the view and look upstream. things pretty quiet in the ohio valley and this is the direction our weather is coming from. this little disturbance that traveled by monday and tuesday. again, giving us that slight chance for a thunderstorm. but i think the best chance for rain this week will be on wednesday with a stronger cold front. near 90 on tuesday. upper 80s on wednesday. then good chance for showers an storms and i think we are finally going to string probably three days in a row. some dry weather. it has been awhile. friday, saturday, sunday going into next weekend but it will get warm. high temperatures in the low 90s. so quiet start to the work week compared to the weather we have had the past few days.
