ceofhi fitrtation. his office says the allncwiounna . e vego or r foe for the a e proposed purple line. he will also travel to baltimore to talk about the mark redline project. the white house is warning that popular cash for clunkers incentive program could grind to a halt this week but the senate could jump start it by coming up with another $2 billion. participants in the program get up to $4500 for trading in their own vehicles. some are complaining it is just another government give away but some point out there are environmental gains made during the first week. what happens to all the clunkers once they are dropped off on the dealer lot. gary neurenberg is here to unload answers. >> reporter: let's say you are the clunker and your college girlfriend is the junk yard. you get crushed, she gets the money. but there are a few steps before the clunkers get

crushed. >> we were more worried about the process it takes. >> reporter: these two have to get rid of the more than 160 clunkers they have taken in at all the car dealerships. the cars are sitting on a lot in silver springs. >> the first thing we have to do is disable them to make sure they are not running. >> reporter: drain the oil, pour in a compound to destroy the engine. >> the engine is dead and never to be used again. >> reporter: then it is off to this massive auction site where junk yards bid to salvage allowed parts. they are happy that the cash for clunkers into their showroom. it is, after all, a government program. that means bureaucracy. >> the most difficult part is transmitting those documents to the federal government's website. you can never get in. we do most of our transmitting at 1:00 a.m., 2:00 a.m., 3:00 a.m. in the morning we are trying to transmit as many as possible. >> reporter: if the senate comes up with $2 billion more to keep the program running.

>> it is not going to last until november. our best guess is maybe two, three more weeks. if anybody has a car that is eligible for this program you'll never see this again. never. never. >> reporter: some customers have stayed until 3:00 a.m. to finalize deals. another problem if the program is extended inventory is low and choices for a new car could be getting more limited each day. >> gary neurenberg, thank you. right now montgomery police are searching for a 14-year-old girl. she is from silver springs. her parents haven't seen her since last tuesday when she left her home. her family is especially concerned because she doesn't have her medication with her. she is about 5'6" inches tall and weighs about 130 pounds. if you have seen this teen please call police. authorities describe it as sickening. a couple busted on multiple co

wednesday's blaze. the mayor promised a separate investigation into why the firefighters weren't able to get enough water from surrounding hydrants to save at least part of the home. she opened her home over many years to local and national figures and just as many political and social causes. >> i will miss the opportunity that the house provided for people in dc because it wasn't just our house. >> she says she is just not yet ready to really talk about the fire or the efforts to put it out. >> we have been reporting on staffing cutbacks at prince george's county fire stations, cuts intended to save money. now the assistant chief at the boulevard heights station says those cuts really hit home this morning in the middle of a crisis. a fire engine inside the station caught fire because of cutbacks no career firefighters were on duty, volunteers fought the fire and a call went out to other stations. but the closest station, capital heights, had no career

firefighters on duty either as of just yesterday. >> i am shocked that a station, a neighboring station close to us such as capital heights would lose career staffing. >> why would you remove staffing? >> because there is other nearby stations that can adequately cover that area. >> reporter: the spokesman for fire deremertpa ntsaid recent staffing cutbacks had no effect. the united states postal service is facing a $7 billion shortfall this year. britney moorehouse is live from bethesda. the post office losing big numbers but it is the neighborhoods that may end up paying the costs. >> reporter: that is right, derek. this post office behind me on wisconsin avenue in friendship heights is one of 700 across the country that is up for consideration to close. close to our region the agency is looking at a total of nine offices in the district, nine in maryland and 19 in virginia.

postal workers predict that could mean layoffs. >> reporter: it is well past 5:00 p.m. in the evening. he is still working through his route. >> i deliver to hospitals. >> reporter: when he is not there he is greeting his recipients face-to-face-to- face. >> i knew him since i was a kid. >> reporter: it is these relationships that make his job worthwhile. this post office is one of nine in the district officials are looking at closing to cut costs. and neighbors are upset. >> it is the whole neighborhood that uses this. >> unfortunately the post office has adopted a new policy of making money. >> reporter: 20-year postal vat ran campbell says his job is secure but he is worried about other carriers.

good evening, i'm tony pann. turning up the heat a bit. sneaking into the low 90s tomorrow and just a slight chance for a thunderstorm. best chance for rain this week will actually be on wednesday. so make fayour plans accordingl specifically for tonight a quiet one for a change. clear to partly cloudy skies. pleasant conditions i'll call it. low temperatures 63, 64 in the cooler suburbs. low 70s in the city. humidity is going to go up tomorrow. partly sunny skies. humidity will give us a slight chance for a thunderstorm in the afternoon. high temperatures between 88

and 93. southwest winds at 10. sunrise tomorrow morning at 6:12:00 a.m. clear to partly cloudy skies right now. thin high clouds out there still. clear enough the temperatures will drop off close to the dew point. dew points have come up. i still call it comfortable. 76 at national airport. relative humidity of 74%. western suburbs have already dropped into the 60s. 68 in culpepper . 69 in winchester. 72 at vwi. don't expect any trouble for the tuesday morning commute. that slight chance for a thunderstorm will take place in the afternoon. why? we are watching a little disturbance coming out of the great lakes here. upper level energy than surface reflection. with the increase in the heat and humidity there is a slight chance we could see a thunderstorm. best chance for rain will be on wednesday with a front behind it. that will come through probably late in the afternoon on wednesday. then after that the temperature forecast gets tricky going into next weekend. the jet stream is going to move

you would like to think before the redskins cut albert haynesworth a check that they did a physical. but the physical either overlooked his knee problem or the redskins decided to overlook it. he missed practice because of pain in his left knee. he had to have an injection. he said pain in that same knee caused him to miss two games last year but he says it is no big deal. >> it is not serious. if i had to play to today i could play today. i would still be out there. heck, i did it last year and last year i did the injections in the back. i'm not doing that stuff right now so i'm all right. >> as we told you last weekend,
