new carrollton metro station with more. good morning. >> reporter: actually the purpose is not to waste as much gas. governor o'malley will be here at the station to announce his support for the purple line and that's the last hurdle the project is facing. maryland can now apply for federal funding for what could be one of the largest mass transportation initiatives in the state. it would be an east-west loop in the northern part of the metro system. the $1 billion project will connect new carrollton and prince georges county to bethesda and montgomery county with 12 additional stops along the way. >> i think light rail is the answer. we see it being so successful that we need the capacity that light rail offers that buses don't. >> it is more friendly than existing highways. it is expected to have one of the highest ridership levels,

carrying thousands of people including many federal workers. now, andrea, he purple line has its detractors. some say it could spoil the hiking and biking trails along the c&o canal but some say it is coming from well to do neighbors in the bethesda and chevy chase neighborhoods who don't want it through their neighborhood the way that georgetown oppose having a metro stop in their part of the town. 9 news now and wusa9.com. there's a growing debate over staffing cuts to save money at prince georges county fire stations. now the assistant chief of the boulevard heights station those cuts hit home yesterday in the middle of a crisis. a fire engine inside the station caught fire. volunteers fought the fire but because of the cutbacks there were no career firefighters on duty. a call went out to other stations but the closest one,

capitol heights had no career firefighters on duty either. despite that county fire spokesman says the staffing changes had no impact on the response to the fire. a local lawyer says he was discussing last month's arrest of a harvard professor when he said he hated cops and a dc police officer overheard his comment. moments later he faced the same charge as that professor, disorderly conduct, but the attorney, who was openly gay says the officer used a gay slur. andrew stack has more in this 9 news now exclusive but first we want to warn you the attorney uses that gay slur in this speech. >> reporter: we walked by. >> i walked by police car spand criticized the police officer twice in a sing song voice. >> reporter: saying you hate cops maybe rude but does it constitute breaking a law. >> the officer comes across the street within 40, 50 feet and he turned me around and pushed me up against an electrical

is live at the new carrollton metro station with more. good morning. >> it is a project that is expected to save gas for thousands of commuters who have to now basically drive east- west from prince georges to montgomery and vice-versa. the purple line's last hurdle was the governor's approval and now that the governor is about to give it clears the way for maryland to ask for a billion dollar ins in federal funds to beone of the most important mass transit initiatives in the state. the purple line will have 14 stops linking portions and montgomery counties in an east- west loop. new carrollton on one end and bethesda on the other. the billion dollar project mainly funded by federal money is expected to create 35,000 jobs and stimulate the county. it is considered an environmentally friendly alternative opposed to expanding existing highways or

a post office near you may be closing. they are facing a $7 billion short fall this year and is considering closing 700 post offices nationwide. in our region they are looking at nine in the district. nine in maryland and 19 in virginia. as brittany morehouse reports, postal workers say it predicts layoffs. >> it is well past 5:00 in the evening and larry campbell is working through his route. >> monday is heavy. i deliver the hospital center. bulk mail. >> when he is not there he greeting his recipients face to face. >> i knew him since i was a kid. >> reporter: it is these relationships that make his job worthwhile, he says including the friendships form at this branch on georgia avenue but this is one of the post offices in the district that officials are looking to close costs. neighbors are upset. >> it is a whole neighborhood
