the graphics if we can get there, i can show you 95 to 66 drivers are moving at a great pace. that's a quick look at traffic. now, over to you. this morning on 9 news now, police in prince georges county are searching for answers after one person was shot and killed early this morning in oxon hill. it happened around 12:30 in the morning at a building in the 6400 block of livingston road. from what police tell nine news the incident began as an argument and escalated in to gun fire. a total of four people were shot, one died and three others were take on the the hospital. one of those is said to be in critical condition. today maryland governor martin o'malley will reveal the plans for the purple line route. it is scheduled to happen 8:30 than morning at the metro station in new carrollton. armando trull is live from the station with more. good morning. >> good morning, andrea. well, governor o'malley is expected to give the groan light to the purple line. that will bring about 35,000

jobs to the area. it is a billion dollar project and is expected to be one of the most important mass transit initiatives in the state. the proposed purple line would be an east-west loop in the northern part of the metro system. the $1 billion project would connect new carrollton and prince georges county to bethesda and montgomery county with 12 additional stops along the way. >> light rail is the right answer because we see this being so successful that we will be at capacity that light rail office and buses don't. >> reporter: supporters say it is more environmentally friendly approach. the line is expected to have one of the highest ridership levels of the proposed lines carrying thousands of people including many federal workers. now, andrea, the purple line has had its critics. some say the construction will basically harm the hiking and biking trails along the c&o canal. the supporters of the purple

line are dismissing that criticism saying it is coming from well-to-do neighbors in the chevy chase and bethesda area that don't want a light rail system in their neighborhood the same way the georgetown residents didn't want a metro stop in their part of town. armando trull for 9 news now and wusa9.com. it now appears that twice as many children as previously reported have high levels of lead in their blood here in the district and the district's drinking water is being blamed. the new information has come to light during a congressional investigation by the centers for disease control. the findings throw in to doubt assurances from the cdc that lead in dc tap water did not seriously harm children in the city. the justice department says it will give the district more than $12 million in stimulus money. the money will be used to create or preserve 50 law enforcement jobs. dc's high poverty and growing unemployment rates, as well as a hiring freeze and a 4% decline in the number of police

jobs all contributed to the city receiving the money. president obama will spend part of his birthday trying to rally democrats around health care reform. the commander in chief is turning 48 years old. he invited democratic senators to lunch at the white house but before they get to the cake the president will make his birthday wishes known on top domestic priorities, like saving the cash for clunkers program. it is running out of money and needs the senate to approve $2 billion to continue. today on captiol hill, the full senate begins debate on the president's first nominee to the supreme court, judge sonia sotomayor. she is on track to become the high court's first hispanic justice. all senate democrats and six republicans support her. three quarters of the gop are still planning to vote against her, arguing sonia sotomayor is biased. 14 local post offices are on a list of 1,000 which could be closed. it is all in an effort to save the postal service cash.

the agency is struggling as fewer people send letters and businesses switch to e-mail. here's how it breaks down. the agency is looking at a total of nine offices in the district. nine in maryland and 19 in virginia. in maryland that includes one office in rockville, one in bethesda one in hyattsville and silver spring. the closest virginia branch to the washington area is in fredericksburg. you can see the list at wusa9.com. the head of arlington county plans to step down at the end of october. county manager ron carly will leave the county for the county management association based in the district. in his new position he will tackle global warming and emergency management. car -- carlee has been with the county for 29 years. it is 6:05. time for the living smart financial report. wall street welcomed better than expected readings on

manufacturing and car sales. the auto industry got a boost from the government's cash for clunker program. ford credits the program for its first monthly sales increase in two years. chrysler says the program has proven so popular it is running out of some models including the wrangler so it will no longer match the government's $4,500 cash for clunker incentives. general motors says it is eating back in to the leasing business. it plans to lease eight models in five states as part of a trial program. bank of america will pay $33 million to settle sec charges that it misled investors about the buyout of merrill lynch. the bank to told chair holders that merrill agreed not to pay year end bonuses without its consent but they say that bank of america has authorized them to pay $5.8 million in bonuses. don't forget, starting on friday, if you shop at stores in virginia you will be exempt from the 5% sales tax on school

supplies priced up to $20 and on clothing and shoes priced up to $100. the sales tax holiday ends on saturday, august -- sunday, august 9th. the islamic saudi academy has been granted approval to expand its site by the board of supervisors. public hearings drew dozens of speakers, many opposed the school saying teachings encouraged intolerance, but students, parent and teachers say that the school does nono teach intolerance. students went back to class at seven fairfax elementary schools on friday. they operate on a modified year round schedule but that calendar is in jeopardy because of a tight budget. the school spends $2.6 million a year to run the program. a former u.s. president travels to north korea to try to free two american journalists. taliban fighters vow to disrupt upcoming elections in afghanistan. it is coming up on 8

i'm estimating the drive time at 15 minutes. we will flip it over to 66 eastbound. this trip is filling out around route 50. a couple of breaks in the road. an accident at the capital beltway. finally i give you 270 southbound. nothing but volume from 118 germantown road to 370. that's the traffic. later today, maryland governor martin o'malley will reveal details about metro's new purple line. 9 news now digital correspondent, armando trull is live outside of the metro station with a preview. armando? >> in two hours, governor o'malley is expected to give a green light to the light rail system known as the purple line. it is over $1 billion expected to create thousands of jobs and for many folks the best way to get from prince georges to montgomery county. the purple line-1 -- will have 14 stops linking portion and montgomery counties in an east- west loop.

on piney branch road. no word where she was for nearly a week. a joint group of lawmakers from six states is asking the federal government to put more weight behind cleaning up the chesapeake bay. an article in the examiner reviews a hearing which focuses on the key problem harming debate. the problems which were highlighted include an excess of nitrogen, foes ferrous and sediment. it is the beginning of a commitment by the obama administration to use more federal money and resources to clean up the bay. virginia's council for higher education says money from the stimulus plan will help to keep costs down at public colleges and universities. a report says next year the average tuition and fees will go up 5%. that translates to $7,984 a year at the 15 four-year

schools. virginia received federal money for a variety of federal housing programs includes 19.6 million for community development grants 14.2 million for the home investment partnerships program. 1.7million for emergency shelters and $668,000 for housing opportunities for people with aids. it's time for the "living $mart" segment. the financial times reports that wall street banks are reaping big profits by taking advantage of the federal reserve's transparency. the fed has emerged as one of wall street's biggest customers during the financial crisis buying massive amounts of securities to help to stabilize the markets. however, because of federal transparency rules the fed announces its intentions to buy securities in advance. the former fed official says it
