liable service. armando trull is live at the fort totten station with more. >> reporter: that $150 million is a drop in the bucket of all the money they need to run safely over the next ten years. metro is seeking $7 billion over the next ten years in order to make the capital improvements needed to maintain safe and reliable service. metro's general manager john catoe is hoping a chunk of change will come from uncle sam. he asked the senate to follow the house's lead and approve $150 million for capital improvements next year. that amount would be matched by maryland, virginia and the district. the meeting lasted 75 minutes and a good deal of the discussion centered on june 22nd fatal crash and what steps cokebed tan tobe taken to preve similar accidents in the

future. catoe said that lack of money were not the cause of the accident but had there been money to replace some of the cars the damage would have been less. after 20 years of debate it is full speed ahead for the purple line project to connect montgomery and prince georges county. governor o'malley yesterday announced what he calls the locally preferred option, light rail. he said it is a good idea for three reasons. >> it is the cost cost effective. number two, it is the most sustainable. number three, it is the more efficient and rider-friendly option available to us. >> reporter: however, some residents voiced environmental concerns because the purple line will run next to the capital crescent trail in some areas. the price tag is $1.5 billion.

u.s. park police are verdicting a deadly pedestrian accident. it happened last night on the baltimore washington parkway near route 450. police say a man was struck by a vehicle as he tried to cross the highway. it is illegal for pedestrians to be on that section of the parkway. no charges have been filed. we have a followup on a story which was breaking iserst. da inyesterday. prince georges county an arrestn tioosh ngrr shooting at an oxon hill apartment complex. r-23easa-yd olel d rollins is charged with fit- deeegree murder. he opened fire after a domestic dispute. one man died and anotr wan critically injured and two women suffered less serious wounds. authorities say the gunman who opened fire at a pittsburgh health club got off more than 50 rounds. the deadly shooting happened last night at an l.a. fitness. witnesses say a man carrying a bag entered through the back door, went to an aerobics

them to arrive in los angeles. time for another "living $mart" report of the morning. some traders in asia may wish they were on vacation, as well. most of the markets there took a nose dive by the end of the day. the nikkei closed down 122. the good news so far, markets in europe appear to be holding steady. and this comes after a positive day for u.s. markets. the dow gained 33 points to close at 9320. the nasdaq rose two and the s&p 500 jumped 3 points. there's good news if you are hoping to take advantage of the cash for clunkers incentive. the senate is expect todd greene light another $2 billion for the program by the end of the week before they break for the august recess. earlier some republicans had threatened to block in the vote. a cash for clunkers for

filed against dc police officer james colt since 2002. the latest involved attorney pepin tuma. he claims that colt grabbed him and slammed him in to a steel utility box because he reportedly overheard pepin tuma make a remark about police. >> i told the officer i was an attorney and i knew it was within my rights to express an opinion in public. >> reporter: pepin tuma who is openly gay also says the officer insulted him with a gay slur. an internal affairs investigation is being conducted by police. a top local fire official who commented on down sizing plans has been suspended. that story is coming up. plus, federal agents close the door on local health care businesses. and nasa moves the next shuttle in to pox for a launch -- in to position for a launch later this month. you are watching 9 news now. we'll be right back.

in the news now, the fbi shut down two health-care related businesses yesterday. agents armed with search warrants raided the office of standard medical supply and pain and rehab center. both are located in southeast washington. the fbi did not specify the reason but did say the raids were part of a health fraud investigation. in prince georges county, assistant chief antawn jordan has been operationally suspended until further notice. jordan recently spoke publicly about the new staffing reduction plan put in to place by fire chief eugene jones. however, jordan says he doesn't think thcomments had anything to do with his suspension. the space shuttle"discovery" is ready to launch to the international space station. it was rolled out from its hangar at cape canaveral. it took eight hours to be slowly rolled to the launch pad. the military slaps new

a toddler narrowly suives severe storms that rolled across indiana. a large tree fell in to the home and hit the 2-year-old. he fractured his skull but is expected to recover. the storm snapped utility poles leaving power lines lying across neighborhood streets. >> they had 3.81 inches of rain yesterday. that was a record and louisville had 6 1/2 inches of rain during the rush hour on tuesday. so, just reading a story in usa "usa today" and then another inch in the afternoon. hundreds of people rescued from cars. >> unbelievable. >> we used to say this is about global warming now i read it is global cooling. >> it is global freak out. >> i like that. >> let's get you out the door because we have a decent start to the day. however, i think the finish
