the northbound trip from fredericksburg to the beltway, factor in extra time because we have slick roads we are dealing with. 395 northbound fine past edsall and gofer to new york avenue through the district. lanes are wide open. as i mentioned they are slick. andrea, over to you. the stalking charge against marion barry was dropped just days after his arrest last month but the revelation that he gave a contract to an exgirlfriend in the case may have far-reaching implications. armando trull is at the wilson building with more on what the "washington post" uncovered about marion barry's spending habits. armando? >> it is more controversy for one of the most controversial politicians in the district. the "washington post" says marion barry has been six times more generous to his than his

peers. there is it little evidence of what taxpayers got in return. he dolled out $252,000 to outside contractors for consulting work, media relations and temporary workers. some of the the money may have been for political campaigning and not constituent services according to the post. the second biggest spender was brown who spent $45,000 during the same period. the contracting policies are being investigated because of a recent scandal involving barry and a former girlfriend who he had hired as a contractor. barry said he has broken no laws in his contracting activity. >> the "washington post" does not say that any of the activities it uncovered is illegal. live at the wilson building 9 news now and wusa9.com. after an apparent clamp down on demonstrations in

story out of pittsburgh. police have identified the gunman behind the shooting spree at a fitness club. they say 48-year-old george sodini referred to plans for the shooting in his on-line diary and left a rambling letter at the club venting his anger and frustrations to women. he walked in to an aerobics class and opened fire and then killed himself. three women died and nine others were injured. >> i didn't realize what the sound sound was and then i saw people running and screaming and people falling to the floor. >> reporter: he had -- >> he had a lot of hatred in him and he was hell bent on committing this act and there was nobody going to stop him. >> reporter: police say he was a member of the fitness club but unlike earlier witness reports they do not believe he had a relationship with anyone in the aerobics class. the follower of charles manson who pointed a gun at president ford will be freed in

ten minutes after the 5:00 hour. out in arlington, virginia. a police search continues and it's impacting traffic. washington boulevard at 2nd is closed. columbia pike is closed also and columbia pike at south 8th road is shut down. i will have more details coming up. in the news now this thursday morning family and friends gather to remember four people who died in a helicopter crash in maryland. booth, jeff nordaas and george worked for advanced helicopter concepts. they were plying back from a charity event with a passenger kim felix. all four were killed when the chopper crashed. the ntsb is still investigating the cause of the crash. police need your help finding a 12-year-old boy.

the house approved the additional funding already. 9 news now has learned of changes coming to the dc fire department. they come after crews had problems with water pressure fighting last week's fire at the home of former school board president. according to a spokesman, the department is now staffing two of the city's six special water supply companies so they can respond to all reports of building fires in parts of upper northwest and southeast and northeast. a 2007 report after similar problems recommended that all six of the special water supply units have around the clock staffing. the chief said that funding wasn't available. you can read more about the changes at dave statter's blog at statter 911@wusa9.com. the contracts issued by marion barry's office have been under scrutiny since last month when we learned that barry had award warded one to a girlfriend. the post is -- the "washington

summer for perkins, a talented and gifted teen run over in the streets of southeast dc. he was an honor roll student, it was june 13th, a saturday morning when he and his mom were standing here on martin luther king avenue. they were scheduled to go across the street to thurgood marshall academy where he was being enrolled in college prep courses. two cars came speeding down, one jumped the curb striking young james. >> it's hard. it's real hard. >> reporter: james died from his injuries. his mom was treated and released. she and her disabled husband had no funds for a funeral. but some citizens came forward and offered to help. >> it was a blessing for us because i had no idea what we were going to do. >> reporter: the benefactors were the chairman of the dc taxi cab commission and the advisory co. coonsi they approached mclaughlin funeral home and onnegotiated a price, $5,000 for the services.

in the examiner, a private security may be on its way out. and only some of the federal stimulus money being sent to local law enforcement agencies is being used to prevent officer layoffs. and metro riders who take the blue and yellow lines may feel the same pain of slower commute as their red line counterparts. these story and more in the examiner. a teenager made the national spotlight this week over her suspension from school this year. the 17-year-old was suspended for two weeks from oakton high school after being caught taking a birth control pill. as peggy fox reports she has appeared in a spoof on the colbert report making fun of the school's zero toll rancy policy. >> this is nailed them. >> it takes direct aim at
